Choose the payment rail according to what the agent is buying. For ordinary merchant checkout, use a delegated, tokenized card or wallet method that lets the user keep control without exposing reusable credentials. For metered APIs, paid data, content, or other machine-accessible services, an HTTP payment protocol such as x402 may let the agent answer a payment challenge with a stablecoin wallet. An orchestration framework can connect several rails, but it does not make every merchant or country compatible.
The practical decision comes down to purchase context, merchant and geographic acceptance, authority limits, credential custody, settlement requirements, and monitoring. Start by defining those constraints, then verify the provider’s current rollout, supported countries, assets, merchants, and refund or dispute process.
What an AI-agent payment method must do
An AI agent should not receive an unrestricted card number, bank login, or private key and then be left to decide how to spend. A usable design delegates authority: the user or organization specifies what the agent may buy, from whom, up to what amount, and under which approval rules. The payment system translates that authority into a transaction while preserving an audit trail.
There is no universal agent-payment method. Card-network tokenization, stablecoin protocols, and broader orchestration frameworks solve different parts of the problem. A method that works for a supermarket order may be a poor fit for a pay-per-request API, and a protocol that is ideal for automated digital resources may not be accepted by a conventional retailer.

Separate four decisions that are often confused
- Authorization: what the agent is permitted to do on the user’s behalf.
- Funding: how the agent’s balance or account is replenished, such as a card or bank-linked method.
- Settlement: what the merchant or service ultimately receives, such as a card-network payment or USDC on a blockchain.
- Reconciliation: how the operator sees, matches, disputes, refunds, and investigates transactions.
These layers can use different rails. AWS documentation for AgentCore Payments, for example, distinguishes traditional methods used to fund an agent balance from the stablecoin payment made to a resource. Treating funding and settlement as the same choice can lead to an architecture that works in a demo but fails in production.
The main payment-method families
Delegated cards and network tokens
Tokenized card approaches are the closest match for consumer and business purchasing at existing merchants. Stripe’s March 3, 2026 description of Shared Payment Tokens (SPTs) says an agent can initiate a payment with the customer’s permission and preferred payment method without exposing the underlying credentials. The company said it was expanding SPT support to network-led capabilities including Mastercard Agent Pay and Visa Intelligent Commerce, as well as buy-now-pay-later methods from Affirm and Klarna.
Mastercard’s Agent Pay guide describes registering and verifying agents, assigning identifiers, and authorizing actions within predefined parameters. Its agentic tokens replace card numbers in the transaction flow. Those controls are useful when the user wants familiar card acceptance and existing merchant relationships, but the guide does not establish universal availability across issuers, countries, or merchants.

x402 is designed for a machine-readable payment exchange over HTTP. Cloudflare’s Agents documentation describes a server returning HTTP 402 Payment Required, followed by payment headers for a challenge, a credential, and a receipt. The documented examples include USDC on Base, Ethereum, Solana, and other networks. The agent needs a wallet and the resource endpoint needs to implement the same protocol.
This approach fits metered APIs, premium web content, data feeds, compute, and agent-to-agent services where the server can decide the price for a request and deliver the resource after verifying payment. It is less useful when the target merchant only accepts a conventional card checkout or requires a consumer-protection workflow that the protocol does not provide.
Payment-agnostic orchestration
Google Cloud’s AP2 announcement presents a framework for agent payments and an A2A x402 extension for crypto payments. An orchestration layer can carry user intent, authorization, and payment instructions across an ecosystem, allowing an application to select a rail per transaction. It is a coordination mechanism, not a guarantee that every connected merchant, wallet, issuer, or country supports every payment method.
Match the method to what the agent is buying
| Purchase situation | Usually suitable first | Why | Key limitation to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goods or services at established consumer merchants | Delegated card or network token | Uses familiar merchant acceptance and a user’s existing funding source. | Issuer, country, merchant, currency, and agent-support availability. |
| Business purchasing across approved suppliers | Tokenized account with policy controls, or an orchestration layer | Can combine spending caps, supplier allowlists, and human approval. | Whether procurement, tax, invoice, and refund workflows are supported. |
| Metered API calls, data, content, or compute | x402 or another HTTP-native payment protocol | The endpoint can return a price challenge and release the resource after proof of payment. | The agent and endpoint must support the same protocol, asset, and chain. |
| Agent-to-agent services | Protocol-based stablecoin payment or an orchestration framework | Enables automated settlement without a human checkout screen. | Wallet security, chain fees, finality, and counterparty recovery. |
| Mixed environments | Orchestration with more than one rail | Can route a transaction according to merchant and geography. | More components, policy complexity, and failure paths to monitor. |
Six criteria for choosing a rail
1. Acceptance and geography
List the exact countries, merchants, currencies, and assets your agent must reach. A card method may be available to an issuer in one country but not to an agent platform in another. AWS explicitly documents geographic restrictions for some traditional payment methods. Stablecoin support also varies by chain, asset, wallet jurisdiction, and service endpoint.

Do not infer acceptance from a provider announcement. Ask whether the target merchant can receive the payment, whether your organization can legally and operationally use the method in its region, and whether settlement is available in the currency you need. Record the answer for each route instead of keeping a single global “supported” flag.
2. Delegated authority and limits
Require a transaction policy before enabling payment. At minimum, define a per-transaction ceiling, a daily or monthly budget, permitted merchants or domains, allowed product categories, and an approval threshold. AWS documents spending permissions and configurable limits; Mastercard describes predefined parameters for agent actions.
Use progressively stronger approval as consequences increase. An agent might autonomously buy a low-cost API request, ask for confirmation before a larger purchase, and require two-person approval for a supplier change or recurring commitment. Make the policy fail closed when the amount, merchant, currency, or purpose is outside the recorded intent.
3. Credential custody
The agent should not see reusable secrets in its prompt, logs, or ordinary tool output. Tokenized card flows are designed to avoid exposing the underlying card credentials. Coinbase describes its Agentic Wallets as keeping private keys in its infrastructure rather than exposing them to the agent prompt. Those are provider design claims, so verify the actual isolation model, key rotation, administrator access, export rules, and incident process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor wallets, separate signing authority from conversational context. Give the agent a narrowly scoped signing service or policy engine, not an unrestricted seed phrase. For cards, prefer single-use or merchant-scoped tokens where available and ensure that token revocation is independent of the agent process.
4. Settlement and compatibility
Identify what the counterparty receives. A card-network authorization, an on-chain USDC transfer, and an internal platform balance have different confirmation, refund, and accounting behavior. For x402, confirm the chain, token, wallet format, required headers, and confirmation rule on both sides. A protocol implementation at only one end is not enough.
Ask whether the recipient can return funds on the same rail. On-chain transfers may be final even when the service fails, while card transactions may have a dispute mechanism. The right method depends on whether delivery can be verified immediately and how much recourse the purchaser needs.

5. Monitoring and recourse
Every payment record should identify the user intent, agent identity, policy decision, merchant or endpoint, amount, asset, timestamp, approval event, and delivery result. AWS describes transparency and observability features for its payment tooling, but the exact dispute and refund path is provider-specific.
Choose a system that lets an operator pause the agent, revoke a token, inspect pending transactions, reconcile provider records with internal orders, and distinguish an authorization failure from a successful payment followed by service failure. Retain enough evidence to explain why a transaction was allowed without storing sensitive credentials.
6. Operational and regulatory fit
Check identity verification, accounting treatment, tax documentation, sanctions screening, data residency, and retention requirements before production use. Stablecoin settlement can introduce chain-specific fee and compliance work. Card flows can simplify familiar accounting but still require controls for refunds, recurring payments, and chargebacks. A technically elegant rail is not suitable if your finance or compliance team cannot operate it.
A practical selection workflow
- Describe the purchase. Write down whether the agent buys a physical good, a business service, an API call, content, compute, or another agent’s output. Include expected amount, frequency, urgency, and whether the result is reversible.
- Map the counterparties. List required merchants or endpoint domains, countries, currencies, assets, and any checkout or invoice requirements.
- Choose the settlement rail. Select card/network tokenization for ordinary merchant acceptance, x402 or a compatible HTTP protocol for machine-priced digital resources, or an orchestration layer when both are required.
- Define authority. Set per-transaction and rolling limits, merchant or domain allowlists, category restrictions, approval thresholds, and rules for recurring charges.
- Design custody. Keep card credentials, wallet keys, and signing tokens outside the model context. Specify rotation, revocation, administrator access, and what appears in logs.
- Test failure paths. Simulate an expired token, insufficient balance, wrong chain, duplicate request, timeout after payment, rejected merchant, partial fulfillment, and refund.
- Instrument reconciliation. Store a transaction ID that connects the user request, policy decision, payment receipt, and delivered result. Build alerts for unusual amount, frequency, destination, or failure rate.
- Verify rollout status. Confirm current country access, supported assets, merchant coverage, fees, and preview limitations in the provider’s documentation before committing to the integration.
How an x402 payment typically works
- The agent requests a protected URL or API resource.
- The server responds with HTTP 402 Payment Required and a machine-readable challenge describing the amount, asset, chain, destination, expiration, and required payment format.
- The agent evaluates the challenge against its spending policy. If the amount or destination is outside policy, it stops or requests human approval.
- A wallet or signing service creates the payment credential without revealing an unrestricted private key to the model.
- The agent sends the credential in the protocol’s payment header or equivalent request field.
- The server or a verifier checks the transaction and returns a receipt or proof, then delivers the resource.
- The client records the challenge, credential reference, receipt, resource result, and any chain transaction identifier for reconciliation.
Cloudflare’s documentation describes payment headers for the challenge, credential, and receipt, and lists USDC on Base, Ethereum, Solana, and other networks. Exact fields and supported networks are implementation details that can change, so use the endpoint’s current specification rather than hard-coding assumptions from an example.
MPP is another documented approach that supports methods beyond blockchains, including cards through Stripe and stablecoins. It can be useful when an application needs one protocol surface but must serve endpoints with different settlement rails. Confirm that the client library, endpoint, and selected funding source support the same method.

How delegated card payments typically work
- The user selects a preferred funding method and grants the agent a purpose-bound permission.
- The payment provider or network creates a token or shared payment credential instead of giving the agent the underlying card number.
- The policy layer binds that credential to limits such as amount, merchant, time window, or transaction count.
- The agent submits a purchase request through the approved payment capability.
- The provider translates the token into the network authorization and returns a status without exposing reusable credentials.
- The operator records the authorization, capture, fulfillment, and refund or dispute events.
SPTs, Mastercard Agent Pay, and Visa Intelligent Commerce illustrate this direction, while support for buy-now-pay-later methods such as Affirm and Klarna may matter for particular consumer checkout requirements. Availability is not universal; verify the issuing institution, country, merchant, and agent platform involved.
Funding is not the same as paying the resource
An agent platform may let an operator add funds with a traditional card while the agent pays a service in stablecoin. AWS AgentCore documentation describes this pattern and notes geographic limits for some traditional funding methods. The funding account is an account-management choice; the resource payment is a settlement choice.

Model both flows in your controls. Set a limit on how much the platform balance can be replenished, a separate limit on what the agent can spend from that balance, and an approval rule for transfers to a new chain or wallet. Otherwise, a generous funding limit can silently defeat a carefully designed per-request policy.

Prompt injection and fraudulent instructions
A web page, email, or API response may tell the agent to pay a different address or bypass approval. Treat payment destinations, prices, and policy changes as untrusted data. Require an independent policy check and, for high-risk transactions, human confirmation showing the final merchant, amount, asset, and destination.
Recommended Free Tools
Duplicate or replayed payments
Retries after a timeout can create two charges. Use idempotency keys where supported, bind challenges to an expiration time, and record whether a receipt has already been consumed. Do not assume that a successful network submission means the application received the response.
Paid but undelivered resource
For an API or content purchase, retain the request and receipt even if the response is lost. Define whether the service can replay delivery, issue a credit, or refund on the same rail. On-chain finality may not provide a native refund, so the commercial agreement must cover this case.
Compromised wallet or token
Use short-lived, purpose-limited credentials, withdrawal limits, allowlisted destinations, and rapid revocation. Keep signing operations in a hardened service and alert on an unusual chain, asset, amount, or frequency. Never place a seed phrase or unrestricted private key in a system prompt, environment variable visible to the agent, or transcript.
Unauthorized recurring commitments
Separate one-time purchases from subscriptions, renewals, and auto-replenishment. Require a new approval for a recurring term, maximum total commitment, and cancellation deadline. A payment method that is safe for a single request can be unsafe when the merchant can charge again later.

What the available adoption figure means
Visa and Artemis reported approximately $15.0 million in adjusted volume across 109.6 million x402 transactions since the protocol’s launch in May 2025. That is an activity figure for one protocol, not a market-share comparison with card-based agent payments and not evidence that x402 is suitable for a particular merchant or geography. No directly comparable adoption statistic was established for the other approaches discussed here.

The broader market remains fragmented. Pedro Arnt, CEO at dLocal, described emerging-market payments as “fragmented and complex, from cards to local payment methods, to wallets and stablecoin.” That fragmentation is precisely why acceptance and geography belong at the start of the selection process rather than being treated as implementation details.
Availability changes quickly
Provider support, preview status, geographic access, supported assets, fees, and protocol implementations are volatile. AgentCore Payments was announced as a preview, and traditional payment methods may be restricted by location. Before launch, recheck the current implementation documentation, test the exact countries and merchants you need, and document which features are production-ready versus preview-only.
Use a staged rollout: begin with a low spending cap and a small allowlist, monitor successful delivery and reconciliation, then expand only after failure and refund paths are proven. Keep a fallback method for purchases that cannot use the primary rail, but do not let fallback bypass the same authorization and logging controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent use my card number directly?
It should not need to. Prefer a delegated token or payment capability that keeps reusable card credentials outside the model context, with limits on amount, merchant, time, and frequency.
Do I need cryptocurrency to let an agent pay?
No. Tokenized card and wallet methods can support ordinary merchant checkout. Stablecoins become relevant when the endpoint uses an HTTP payment protocol such as x402 or when on-chain settlement is an explicit requirement.
What happens if the merchant does not support the agent’s protocol?
The agent cannot complete that route automatically. Use a supported card or wallet flow, route through an orchestration layer that offers a compatible rail, or require a human checkout; do not weaken the spending policy to force payment.
Is x402 a replacement for card payments?
No. It addresses machine-readable HTTP payments, especially for metered digital resources. Card-network methods remain more natural where existing merchants, familiar funding, and conventional dispute processes are required.

Record the payment receipt and request, use idempotent retry or replay where available, and define a provider-specific credit or refund process. On-chain settlement may require a separate commercial refund because the transfer itself can be final.
The Bottom Line
For ordinary merchant purchases, start with a delegated, tokenized card or wallet method that supports your countries and merchants. For APIs, content, data, and other HTTP-accessible resources, choose x402 or a compatible protocol when both endpoints support the required asset and chain. In every case, enforce bounded authority, protect credentials, separate funding from settlement, and verify current rollout and recourse before allowing autonomous spending.
