For a Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED Model, the practical choice is a microSDXC UHS-I card. Pick its capacity from the games and downloadable content you plan to keep installed, and use Nintendo’s 60–95 MB/sec high-speed guideline as a compatibility target. If you own a Nintendo Switch 2, stop: game storage requires a microSD Express card instead. An ordinary Switch microSD card cannot store or load Switch 2 digital games or save data.

Start by identifying your console

The card specification depends first on the Switch generation. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance separates the original Nintendo Switch family from Nintendo Switch 2, so do not buy from a listing that says only “Switch-compatible” without checking the card type.

Console Card type for game storage Important limitation
Nintendo Switch microSD, microSDHC, microSDXC; microSDXC is the sensible choice for a digital library microSDXC use requires a system update
Nintendo Switch Lite microSD, microSDHC, microSDXC Same original-Switch storage rules
Nintendo Switch – OLED Model microSD, microSDHC, microSDXC Same original-Switch storage rules
Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express for game storage An ordinary microSD card can import captured Switch screenshots and videos, but cannot save or load Switch 2 games or save data

See Nintendo’s official generation-by-generation compatibility table for the exact distinction: Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch microSD compatibility.

What “microSDXC UHS-I” means

For the original Switch family, the useful search phrase is microSDXC UHS-I card. Each part describes a different requirement:

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • microSD is the physical card format used by the console.
  • SDXC identifies the extended-capacity family. Nintendo lists capacities from 64 GB through 2 TB for microSDXC.
  • UHS-I is the bus-speed class Nintendo recommends for a higher-speed card. It is not the same thing as a guarantee that the console will reach the maximum number printed on a package.

Nintendo lists the supported families as microSD cards up to 2 GB, microSDHC cards from 4 GB to 32 GB, and microSDXC cards from 64 GB to 2 TB. A microSDXC card needs a system update before the console can use it. The complete type and capacity guidance is in Nintendo Support’s supported-card article.

Capacity categories

Card family Nintendo-listed capacity Practical use for digital games
microSD Up to 2 GB Too small for a modern digital library; suitable only for very limited storage
microSDHC 4–32 GB Works within the specification, but leaves little room for multiple large downloads
microSDXC 64 GB–2 TB The practical range for downloadable games, updates, DLC, screenshots, and video

The capacities above are compatibility limits, not a promise that any particular capacity is the best value or will hold a particular number of games.

Choose capacity from your own library

There is no Nintendo-approved “ideal” capacity. Nintendo says the additional space you need varies by game and by the content you choose to install. A player who keeps a few cartridges and small downloads needs a different card from someone who buys large digital releases and their expansions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. List what must remain installed

Write down the games you expect to play over the next year, plus downloadable expansions, updates, and any captures you want to retain. Separate titles that must stay installed from games you can archive and redownload later. Your answer should be based on the installed library, not the total number of games you have purchased.

2. Check each eShop storage requirement

Before buying a card, open each game’s listing in Nintendo eShop and check its required storage. Nintendo specifically advises checking the eShop requirement because extra space varies from one title to another. Record the download size and add any separately listed downloadable content you intend to keep.

3. Add operating headroom

Do not plan to fill a card to its last available byte. Leave room for patches, language packs, DLC released after launch, screenshots, and video captures. The amount of headroom is your decision; Nintendo does not publish a universal percentage or game-count rule.

4. Select the next sensible capacity

Compare your total against currently available capacities and choose one that leaves practical room for growth. A 256 GB microSDXC UHS-I card is a legitimate search example, but it is not a Nintendo-endorsed answer for every player. If your calculation is already close to that capacity, moving up is safer than repeatedly uninstalling games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capacity printed on the package is decimal storage, while the free-space figure shown by the console may be lower after formatting and file-system overhead. Treat the manufacturer’s number as the card’s nominal capacity, not the exact space you will see for game files.

A simple sizing worksheet

  1. List every title and DLC package you want installed.
  2. Copy each storage requirement from its Nintendo eShop listing.
  3. Add the figures, then include a reserve for updates and captures.
  4. Choose a supported capacity above that total.
  5. Recheck the calculation whenever a planned game has an unusually large download or expansion.

Use Nintendo’s speed guidance, not a package maximum

Nintendo recommends UHS-I and gives a high-speed guideline of 60–95 MB/sec. Nintendo’s wording is: “In order to improve your gameplay experience, using a microSD card with a higher transfer speed is recommended.” That recommendation appears in Nintendo Support’s card guidance.

The 60–95 MB/sec figure is guidance for selecting a high-speed card, not a measured result for every model in a Switch. A package’s maximum read speed is normally measured under the manufacturer’s test conditions; the console, card controller, file size, and workload can produce a different result. No specific card model has been established here as delivering a particular loading-time improvement.

What to look for on a listing

  • The card should clearly say microSDXC if you are buying 64 GB or larger.
  • It should identify UHS-I, matching Nintendo’s recommendation for higher-speed cards.
  • Its stated read-speed range should be consistent with Nintendo’s 60–95 MB/sec guideline, while making no assumption that the Switch will reach the package maximum.
  • The stated capacity must be genuine and appropriate for the console generation you own.

Do not pay extra for a “Switch 2 Express” label merely to speed up an original Switch. Nintendo says a microSD Express card can be used with the original Switch, but its read/write speed will be equivalent to an ordinary microSD card in that console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse original Switch cards with Switch 2 Express cards

Switch 2 changes the storage requirement for games. Nintendo Switch 2 is compatible with microSD Express for game storage, with capacities up to 2 TB listed in Nintendo’s support information. A conventional microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card previously used in an original Switch can still be used to import captured Switch screenshots and videos, but it cannot be used on Switch 2 to save or load digital games or save data.

Conversely, microSD Express is not a performance upgrade for an original Switch. Nintendo states that Express-card read/write speed on the original console is equivalent to that of an ordinary microSD card. Buy Express only when the console that will use it requires Express, rather than assuming the newer label improves an older console.

Know what the card stores—and what it cannot store

A microSD card expands the original Switch family’s storage for downloaded content. Nintendo identifies these uses:

  • Downloaded software, including digital games
  • Software updates
  • Downloadable content
  • Captured screenshots and video

Game save data is different. Nintendo stores save data in the console’s system memory and says it cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card. A larger card therefore gives you more room for installations and captures, but it is not a backup device for your progress. Nintendo’s storage FAQ explains both the supported content and save-data location: Nintendo Switch Data Management FAQ.

Buy against a checklist

Compatibility checklist

  • Confirm whether the console is an original Switch family model or Switch 2.
  • For an original Switch, select microSDXC when buying 64 GB or more.
  • For Switch 2 game storage, select microSD Express.
  • Check the capacity against your eShop storage worksheet.
  • Check for UHS-I and compare the stated speed with Nintendo’s 60–95 MB/sec guideline.

Authenticity and listing checks

Buy from a seller with a clear return process and inspect the listing for a precise capacity, card type, and speed specification. Avoid listings that mix several capacities under one photograph, use vague phrases such as “for all Switch models,” or promise a console-specific speed test without showing test conditions. A counterfeit card can report a larger capacity than it actually has and fail only after data fills the card.

When the card arrives, compare its printed capacity and model details with the order. If the console reports errors, repeated corruption, or dramatically less space than expected, stop installing games and return or replace the card rather than trusting it with additional downloads.

Install and prepare a card on an original Switch

Before inserting it

  1. Confirm that the card is the correct type and capacity for your console.
  2. Back up any files you need from a card that has been used in another device. Formatting removes the card’s existing contents.
  3. Install the latest available system update if you are adding a microSDXC card; Nintendo requires an update for microSDXC use.

Format it in the console

  1. Insert the microSD card into the console’s card slot while following the model’s hardware instructions.
  2. Open System Settings.
  3. Open System and then Formatting Options.
  4. Choose the option to format the microSD card and confirm after reading the warning.

Menu wording can vary with system software, so follow the on-screen labels if they differ. Formatting in the console gives it a file system the Switch can use and avoids carrying over incompatible folders from another device.

Move or redownload software

After formatting, the Switch uses the card for eligible downloads when internal storage is insufficient or when you select it as the destination. Existing software can be managed from System Settings > Data Management; use the available move or archive controls rather than deleting a purchase from your account. Redownloading a purchased game is possible through the account that bought it, but a save file is still separate and remains in system memory.

How capacity decisions work in real situations

Mostly physical-game player

If most of your games are cartridges and you download only patches, small digital titles, and occasional DLC, a lower-capacity supported card may be sufficient. Check the actual eShop requirements instead of paying for unused capacity.

Digital-first player

If you buy most games digitally, total the eShop requirements for the titles you want available at the same time. A larger microSDXC card reduces the need to archive and redownload games, but the correct size still comes from your list rather than a universal recommendation.

Capture-heavy player

Frequent screenshots and video clips consume the same card space as other stored content. Include your capture habits in the reserve you add to the game total, and transfer or delete older captures if they are crowding out software.

Player considering a future Switch 2

If you are buying for an original Switch today but expect to move to Switch 2, do not assume the existing card will become the Switch 2 game-storage card. Switch 2 requires microSD Express for games, while an ordinary card can only import captured Switch media. Treat the two purchases as separate compatibility decisions.

Troubleshooting common card problems

The console does not recognize a new card

  • Check that the card is fully inserted and the console is powered down when the model’s instructions require it.
  • Verify that a 64 GB-or-larger card is microSDXC and that the system update was installed.
  • Remove the card, restart the console, and reinsert it.
  • If the card was used elsewhere, format it in the Switch after saving any files you need.
  • Test a replacement card if recognition fails repeatedly; do not continue using a card that reports corruption.

There is less free space than the label suggests

Nominal capacity and usable capacity differ because of decimal labeling, formatting, and file-system overhead. Check the free-space figure in Data Management and compare it with the card’s stated capacity. A modest difference is expected; a major discrepancy or rapidly shrinking capacity is a reason to suspect a faulty or counterfeit card.

A download will not fit

Check whether another game, update, DLC package, or capture is using the remaining space. Archive software you do not need immediately, move eligible data through Data Management, or choose a larger supported card. Archiving removes the installed software data while retaining the purchase and save data; it does not turn the microSD card into a save-data backup.

The card works on Switch but not on Switch 2

This is expected when the card is an ordinary microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card. Switch 2 requires microSD Express for game storage. The older card’s limited media-import function does not make it a compatible game-storage card.

Frequently asked questions

What microSD card do I need for Nintendo Switch?

For Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED Model, choose a microSDXC UHS-I card in a capacity sized to your installed library. Nintendo lists 64 GB through 2 TB for microSDXC and recommends UHS-I with a 60–95 MB/sec high-speed guideline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much storage do I need for Switch games?

There is no single correct number. Check every planned game’s Nintendo eShop storage requirement, add DLC and updates, leave room for captures and future downloads, and then select the next supported capacity.

Does a microSD card save Switch game data?

No. Nintendo stores game save data in system memory. The card stores downloadable software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and video instead.

Can I use my old Switch card in Switch 2?

Only for importing captured Switch screenshots and videos. It cannot store or load Switch 2 digital games or save data; game storage on Switch 2 requires microSD Express.

Is a 256 GB card automatically the best choice?

No. 256 GB is a useful shopping-search example, not a Nintendo universal recommendation. Your eShop storage list and desired headroom determine whether it is enough.
