For most U.S. buyers, the standard Nintendo Switch 2 is the right place to start: it includes the console, dock, and Joy-Con 2 controllers, so you can play on a TV, in tabletop mode, or handheld without buying another controller or dock. Choose a bundle only if you want its included game and membership, add storage only if the 256GB internal capacity is not enough, and buy optional accessories for a specific use. If you need extra game storage, it must be a microSD Express card—not a regular microSD card from the original Switch.
Start with the system, then add only what you will use
Nintendo Switch 2 is one console with three play modes, not a set of separate handheld and TV models. Its 7.9-inch LCD displays 1080p in handheld mode, and the included dock connects it to a television. The standard package also includes a pair of Joy-Con 2 controllers, so there is no need to budget for a separate controller just to begin playing.
The key choices are therefore less about picking a hardware edition and more about deciding whether a game bundle fits, whether you need additional storage, and whether your play plans call for a camera, another controller, or racing wheels. Original Switch owners have one more decision: which of their existing games and accessories will work with the new system.

A useful way to avoid overspending is to separate the purchase into three parts: the console you need, a game or membership you would have bought anyway, and optional hardware for a particular use. That makes a bundle’s headline savings less important than its actual value to your household. A game you will not play, a membership you will not use, or an accessory that duplicates what is already in the box should not count as a personal saving.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A quick decision path
- Choose the standard system unless a bundle includes a game and membership you genuinely expect to use.
- Decide how much you will play digitally. The console has 256GB of internal storage, some of which is occupied by system data. If that will not fit your intended game library, plan for a microSD Express card.
- Check your old games and accessories by exact title or model. Some original Switch items work, some have limits, and some are incompatible.
- Add optional hardware for a clear reason. A camera is for video chat; an extra controller suits a preferred control setup or additional players; wheels are for compatible racing games.
What comes with the standard Nintendo Switch 2?
Nintendo announced a U.S. suggested retail price of $449.99 for the standard system at launch on June 5, 2025. The standard box includes:
- Nintendo Switch 2 console
- Left and right Joy-Con 2 controllers
- Joy-Con 2 Grip and two Joy-Con 2 straps
- Nintendo Switch 2 Dock
- Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable
- AC adapter
- USB-C charging cable
That package covers handheld, tabletop, and TV play. You do not need to purchase the dock separately to connect the system to a television, or an additional pair of controllers for basic play. Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically to the console and can function like a mouse in compatible games; mouse-style control is not a feature to assume every game supports.
The 256GB internal storage is eight times the capacity of the original Switch, according to Nintendo, but the full amount is not available for games because some is used by the system. If you mainly buy physical games and keep only a small digital library, you may not need an expansion card right away. If you expect to download many games, consider your library before deciding whether the built-in capacity will suffice.
The console’s play modes also help clarify what you are paying for. Handheld play uses the built-in 7.9-inch screen; tabletop play uses the console’s own screen with the included Joy-Con 2; and TV play uses the included dock and HDMI cable. A buyer who wants to switch between these modes does not need to choose a different model or add a second dock just to get started. The screen and dock specifications describe different outputs, however: 1080p is the handheld screen resolution, while docked output can reach 4K only in supported games with a compatible display.
Should you buy a bundle?
A bundle makes financial sense only when its included items are useful to you. Compare the actual package—system, game, and any membership term—with what you would buy separately. Nintendo’s stated savings use manufacturer’s suggested retail prices; they are not a guarantee that the bundle beats every retailer’s price or a sale on an individual item.
Think of a bundle as a convenience and a possible discount, not automatically the best-value version of the console. If you already planned to buy the included game and will use the membership, compare the full package price with those same items purchased separately. If you would skip either item at full price, calculate the value using only what you actually want rather than treating every bundled item as cash saved.
Mario Kart World bundles
Nintendo announced the original Mario Kart World system bundle at a U.S. suggested retail price of $499.99 in 2025. A later Nintendo announcement in 2026 priced a Mario Kart World bundle at $549.99 and said it was expected in late September. Nintendo’s U.S. bundle page describes a system, a full digital download of Mario Kart World, and a three-month Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership. It advertises $37.98 in savings against the separate manufacturer’s suggested retail prices for the system, game, and membership.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
These are distinct price and timing references, not a reason to assume that every retailer is selling the same package at the same price. The $499.99 figure belongs to the launch-era bundle announcement; $549.99 is the price in Nintendo’s later 2026 announcement. Nintendo’s U.S. bundle page also says availability is while supplies last. Check the package contents, current price, and stock at the retailer before buying.
Be especially clear about what “game included” means. The current bundle page describes a full digital download of Mario Kart World, so the included game is not a physical game card. If you prefer physical copies, or routinely lend or trade games, that format may matter more to you than the stated savings. Also confirm that the page or retailer listing matches the exact bundle you intend to buy, since the announced 2025 and 2026 prices refer to different price references and offers.
What to check before choosing any bundle
- Would you buy the included game anyway? If not, its inclusion may not represent useful savings to you.
- Do you want the digital version? The Mario Kart World bundle includes a full digital download, rather than a physical game card.
- Will you use the membership? Nintendo says online features require internet access and a Nintendo Account. Membership availability varies by country.
- Are you comfortable managing renewal? The included three-month Individual Membership auto-renews after its included term unless canceled.
- Does the arithmetic work at the price you can actually pay? Compare the bundle against separate items at the retailer you are considering, not only Nintendo’s suggested-price savings calculation.
The included membership is a limited term, not a permanent feature of the console. If you do not expect to use the online features during that period, do not assign the full membership value to your purchase. If you do use it, note the auto-renewal condition and decide whether you want to cancel before the included term ends. Nintendo says online features require an internet connection and a Nintendo Account, and membership availability varies by country.
Sports Resort bundle announced for October 2026
Nintendo announced a Nintendo Switch Sports Resort bundle at $529.99, including a system, game download, and 90-day membership, with an October 22, 2026 release date. Nintendo’s stated savings were $27.98 compared with the separate suggested retail prices. On October 13, 2026, that announced release date is still in the future. Confirm release status, stock, final package details, and retailer pricing before placing an order.

The built-in screen is a 7.9-inch LCD with 1080p resolution. That is the handheld display specification; it is not the resolution of every game in every mode. When docked, the system can output up to 4K in supported games with a compatible television or other display. Nintendo states that 4K output is capped at 60 frames per second. The game and display both affect the result, so “up to 4K” does not mean every title will run at 4K or that every TV setup will show it.
If you mostly play handheld, judge the system by its built-in screen and the games you plan to play. If you mostly play on a TV, the dock and HDMI cable are already in the standard box; you do not need a separate dock to get started. Check that your display supports the output you want, and remember that maximum resolution depends on both the title and the display.
The practical comparison is simple: the 7.9-inch 1080p figure describes the console’s own screen, while “up to 4K” describes a possible docked output in compatible games. A game’s support and the television or display’s capabilities both matter. If a particular resolution is a deciding factor, check the game and display specifications rather than assuming the console will deliver the maximum in every setup. Nintendo’s 60-fps cap applies to 4K output; do not treat it as a promise that every game will run at that frame rate.

Do original Switch games and accessories work?
Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but some titles are unsupported or not fully compatible. Do not assume every game in an existing library works identically. Check Nintendo’s game-by-game compatibility information for the titles you care about, particularly before buying a system primarily to continue a specific game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCompatibility is a title-level question, not just a question of whether a game is physical or digital. If you are buying Switch 2 to continue a favorite game, look up that exact title and check whether support is full, limited, or unavailable. The same caution applies if a game depends on a particular peripheral or control method: general backward compatibility does not guarantee that every component or feature behaves exactly as it did on the original console.
Original accessories that can still be useful
- Original Joy-Con: They can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but cannot attach to the new console. To charge them, you need an original Switch console or a compatible charging accessory.
- Original Switch Pro Controller: It can pair wirelessly, making it a possible controller to reuse rather than replace.
- Original Ring-Con and Leg Strap: Nintendo says these can still be used in their named games with original Joy-Con paired wirelessly.
- Original Switch AC adapter: It can charge Switch 2 directly, but cannot power the system in TV mode.
Items not to assume are compatible
- Original Nintendo Switch dock: It is not compatible with Switch 2.
- Original Joy-Con attachments: Nintendo marks the original Joy-Con strap, Grip, charging Grip, wheel, and two-way charging stand as incompatible with Joy-Con 2. Do not buy or reuse them on the assumption that the new controllers have the same dimensions or attachment system.
The useful rule is to check the exact accessory, not just whether it was made for “Nintendo Switch.” Wireless pairing does not imply physical attachment, charging support, or full feature compatibility.
For example, an original Joy-Con pair may be useful as spare wireless controllers, but it cannot snap onto the Switch 2 console and will need an original console or compatible charging accessory for charging. An original Pro Controller can also pair wirelessly, but that does not make the original dock compatible. The original AC adapter has a narrower reuse case: it can charge the console directly, but it cannot supply power for TV mode. Those distinctions can prevent a buyer from counting an old item as a complete replacement for an included Switch 2 accessory.
What microSD card does Switch 2 use?
Switch 2 accepts microSD Express cards for saving or loading games. A standard microSD card used with the original Switch is not a substitute: Nintendo says standard microSD cards cannot store or load games or save data on Switch 2. An old card can still be used to import or view screenshots and videos.
Nintendo says Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB. Cards are sold separately, and first use of a microSD Express card requires an internet system update. Nintendo’s U.S. store listed a Samsung 256GB microSD Express card for Nintendo Switch 2 as one example. Check the product label for the exact “microSD Express” designation; a card should not be considered compatible for game storage just because it fits the slot.
This is the most important compatibility distinction to remember when shopping for storage. A regular microSD card may physically fit, but it cannot be used for Switch 2 game storage or save data. If you already own one from the original console, it may still be useful for importing or viewing screenshots and videos; it does not become a game-storage expansion just because it is installed in the new system. Look for the Express designation on the card and product listing.

Deciding whether to add storage now
- Wait if you are unsure. The console includes 256GB of internal storage, so you can start without an expansion card and add one if your library needs the space.
- Plan for a card if you expect a large digital library. Nintendo notes that some internal capacity is used by the system, so do not treat all 256GB as available for games.
- Buy the right format. Choose microSD Express. A standard microSD card from an older console can still help with screenshots and videos, but not Switch 2 game storage or save data.
- Allow for setup. Internet access is needed for the system update required the first time a microSD Express card is used.
Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB, but that maximum is a compatibility ceiling, not a recommendation that every buyer needs a card of that size. Match capacity to the library you expect to keep on the console and to the cost you are willing to pay. The Nintendo U.S. store’s 256GB Samsung example gives buyers a specific capacity and format to compare, but prices and availability can change. You can start with internal storage and reassess once you know how much room your own downloads require.

| Joy-Con 2 Wheel set (two wheels) | You want wheel-style controls for compatible racing play. | $24.99 |
| Samsung 256GB microSD Express card | You need additional space for games. | $59.99 |
These are Nintendo U.S. store prices displayed on October 9, 2026, not guaranteed current prices; check the store before purchase. The table lists examples, not a required shopping list. In particular, the included Joy-Con 2 are enough to start playing, and storage is only useful if the internal space does not meet your needs.
Use the prices as a dated reference point, not a forecast or a promise of the price at another retailer. The accessory total can add up quickly: the listed Pro Controller, camera, wheel set, and 256GB card together would be $229.96 at those displayed prices. That is not a recommended starter kit; it illustrates why each item should solve a real need before it goes into the cart. A buyer who only wants TV and handheld play already has the dock and Joy-Con 2 in the standard system.
Camera: for video, not basic voice chat
Nintendo lists the Switch 2 Camera separately. A compatible USB camera enables video chat through GameChat. The console’s built-in microphone handles voice chat, so a camera is specifically an option for buyers who want video—not a prerequisite for talking to other players.
If video chat is not part of your plans, the camera is easy to leave off the initial purchase. Nintendo’s compatibility note refers to a compatible USB camera, so buyers considering an alternative should confirm that the exact camera is compatible rather than assume any USB camera will work. The built-in microphone already covers voice chat, which is a different use from sending video.
Extra controller and wheel set: match them to games and players
A Switch 2 Pro Controller is an optional separate controller. It can suit someone who wants a full controller rather than using Joy-Con 2, but the standard package already includes Joy-Con 2. The two-wheel Joy-Con 2 Wheel set is likewise conditional: it is relevant when you want that style of control for a compatible racing game, not a general requirement for the console.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Do not buy an extra controller on the assumption it is needed to operate the system. The included pair is the starting control set; an additional Pro Controller is a preference or player-count purchase, depending on the game. Similarly, the two-wheel set is a specialized control accessory for compatible racing play. It is not a replacement for the included Joy-Con 2, and original Switch wheels are specifically marked incompatible with Joy-Con 2.
A practical buying checklist
- Set your actual target price. For context, Nintendo’s standard-system U.S. suggested retail price at the June 5, 2025 launch was $449.99. Treat bundle and accessory prices as dated offers, not permanent prices.
- Compare bundle contents, not labels. Confirm whether the package includes a game download, the exact membership term, and whether the listed offer is in stock. Calculate value based on items you would otherwise buy.
- Choose a storage plan around your library. Start with 256GB internal storage if it suits your expected downloads; if expanding, select microSD Express and account for the initial internet update.
- Audit your old gear. Check specific games and accessories. Original Joy-Con and Pro Controller can pair wirelessly, but the old dock cannot be reused and Joy-Con 2 attachments are not interchangeable by default.
- Skip optional add-ons without a use case. Buy a camera for video chat, wheels for compatible racing games, and an extra controller for your play setup—not simply because they appear beside the console.
Before checkout, verify the package’s exact version and what is physically in the box, especially for a bundle that includes a digital download and a limited membership term. Check stock and retailer price rather than relying on a stated savings figure alone. If you are reusing original Switch hardware, separate wireless pairing from physical fit, charging, and TV-mode support; each is a different compatibility question.
Bottom line on picking a configuration
Buy the standard Switch 2 if you want the console without paying for a game or membership you may not use. Choose a bundle when its included digital game and membership fit your plans and the current retailer price makes sense against separate purchases. Reuse supported original accessories selectively, but do not rely on an old dock or regular microSD card for Switch 2 gaming. Everything else is an optional, use-driven purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions
What comes with the Nintendo Switch 2?
The standard box includes the console, left and right Joy-Con 2, a Joy-Con 2 Grip and two straps, the Nintendo Switch 2 Dock, an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable, an AC adapter, and a USB-C charging cable. It includes the hardware for handheld, tabletop, and TV play; a separate dock or controller is not required to start.
Is the Nintendo Switch 2 bundle worth it?
It depends on whether you want the included items. Compare the bundle price with the current prices of the exact game and membership you would otherwise buy. Nintendo’s stated savings use manufacturer’s suggested retail prices and may not match retailer prices. The Mario Kart World bundle includes a digital download and a three-month Individual Membership that auto-renews unless canceled, so consider format and renewal before buying.
Can I use my old Switch accessories on Switch 2?
Some, but not all. Original Joy-Con and the original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly; original Joy-Con cannot attach to Switch 2 and need an original console or compatible charging accessory to charge. The original dock is incompatible, and the original AC adapter can charge Switch 2 directly but cannot power it in TV mode. Check the exact item: several original Joy-Con attachments are marked incompatible with Joy-Con 2.
What microSD card does Switch 2 use?
Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for game storage, with support up to 2TB. Regular microSD cards from the original Switch cannot store or load games or save data on Switch 2, though an old card can be used to import or view screenshots and videos. First use of a microSD Express card requires an internet system update.
Does Nintendo Switch 2 play original Switch games?
Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but some titles are unsupported or not fully compatible. Check Nintendo’s game-by-game compatibility information for the specific titles you want to play rather than assuming every game works identically.
Do I need to buy a camera or another controller?
No. The standard system includes Joy-Con 2, and its built-in microphone handles voice chat. Consider the separately sold camera if you want video chat through GameChat, and an additional controller only if you prefer a separate full controller or need one for a game and player setup. A Joy-Con 2 Wheel set is for compatible racing play.
The Bottom Line
For most buyers, the standard Nintendo Switch 2 is enough to begin: it includes the dock and Joy-Con 2. Choose a bundle only when its included game and membership are genuinely useful, add storage only when needed and only in microSD Express format, and buy accessories for a specific use. Verify current prices, stock, and compatibility before checkout.
