The best game franchise to follow is the one whose core experience you will willingly repeat, whose entry point fits your time and budget, and whose platform and social requirements match how you play. Popularity alone is a poor test. Start by defining the experience you want, shortlist series through reliable discovery tools, sample one accessible entry, and only then commit to following future releases.
This method works whether you are choosing a story-heavy series, a competitive game, a cooperative world, a builder, a puzzle franchise, or a sports line. It also prevents a common mistake: investing in a famous series whose tone, pacing, monetization, or community does not suit you.
1. Define the experience you want to repeat
A franchise is not just a list of titles. It is a long-term pattern of play, time, and attention. Before looking at names, describe the activity you want to return to after the novelty of a first game wears off.
Choose the primary activity
- Follow a story: You want characters, plot progression, memorable settings, and a satisfying ending. Check whether the series tells one continuous story or uses separate stories in a shared universe.
- Explore a world: You prefer discovery, traversal, secrets, and environmental storytelling. Look for a world whose scale and density suit your available time; a huge map is not automatically better than a compact one.
- Compete: You want ranked matches, mastery, or a sport-like contest. Investigate the size and health of the player base, matchmaking rules, update cadence, and whether progression affects competitive fairness.
- Cooperate: You want missions or campaigns with friends. Confirm the number of players, supported platforms, cross-play rules, voice-chat expectations, and whether solo play remains viable when friends are unavailable.
- Build or manage: You enjoy planning systems, optimizing resources, creating spaces, or developing a team. Determine whether the series emphasizes relaxed creativity, demanding simulation, or a fixed campaign.
- Solve puzzles: You value deduction, experimentation, and carefully designed challenges. Check the expected difficulty and whether hints, accessibility options, or adjustable modes are available.
- Play a sport or activity: You want a familiar ruleset, seasonal competition, or a social party experience. Decide whether you want a realistic simulation, an arcade interpretation, or a collection of short sessions.
Official platform collections can help you search by activity and audience. PlayStation, for example, organizes editorial collections around couch multiplayer, cozy games, family games, MMOs, racing, and team shooters. Treat those pages as starting points rather than proof that a series is right for you.

Write a one-sentence brief
Complete this sentence before you browse: “I want a series that lets me ___, in a ___ tone, for roughly ___ minutes or hours at a time, usually ___.” The final blank can be “alone,” “with a regular group,” “with strangers,” or “with family.” This brief gives you a filter when recommendation systems present attractive but unsuitable games.
2. Build a shortlist without letting algorithms choose for you
Once you know the experience, collect three to five candidate franchises. A shortlist is large enough to expose trade-offs but small enough to investigate properly.
Use storefront discovery tools
Steam offers a Discovery Queue, friend suggestions, curator recommendations, and controls to wishlist, follow, or ignore games. Use these features to gather possibilities, then open each game’s page and verify the details that an algorithm cannot judge for you: tone, entry point, required online services, playtime, and regional availability.
Steam’s recommender learns patterns from player behavior and exposes controls related to release windows and popularity. Tags can filter what you see, but Steam states that tags are not used by the underlying recommendation model. A recommendation therefore indicates a discovery lead, not a guarantee of quality or fit.
Ask people for reasons, not just names
A friend’s suggestion is most useful when you ask what they actually repeat: “What do you do in it after the opening?” “Is it enjoyable alone?” “How long are your usual sessions?” and “What frustrated you?” A title that is perfect for a friend’s competitive group may be a poor choice if you play intermittently or dislike ranked pressure.
Record candidates in a simple table

Do not add a candidate merely because it is famous. Add it because it satisfies at least one part of your brief that the other candidates do not.

3. Compare every candidate on the same six axes
Comparing one franchise by its story and another by its price produces a misleading result. Apply the same questions to every candidate. The table below is a decision framework, not a published ranking formula.

4. Find an entry point that does not punish newcomers
Following a franchise does not require playing every installment in release order. Your goal is to find an entry that explains enough, teaches its systems clearly, and leaves you interested in the rest.
Identify the continuity type
- Direct sequence: Each game continues the same plot. Starting with the first title may matter, although a later game can sometimes provide a recap.
- Shared universe: Games use recurring settings, rules, or references but tell mostly separate stories. Choose the title whose activity and tone best match your brief.
- Anthology: Installments are distinct stories or casts. Release order is usually less important than finding an accessible episode.
- Reboot or remake line: A newer version may retell or restructure an older story. Confirm which version you are buying and whether online guides or community advice refer to the same edition.
- Seasonal or continuously updated line: The current version may be the practical entry point, but check onboarding, account requirements, and the state of its player community.
Check the first-hour experience
Read the official description and a few independent impressions for concrete information: when the main mechanics become available, whether the opening is unusually long, and whether the game assumes knowledge of earlier events. Avoid treating a spoiler-heavy plot summary as a substitute for deciding whether you enjoy the play style.
Prefer a reversible commitment
A self-contained campaign, demo, borrowed copy, or title you already own lets you test the important question: do you enjoy doing the thing this franchise asks you to do? A bundle can be good value only after you know the first entry works for you.
5. Match the commitment to your available time and money
There is no universal “cheap” or “short” franchise. A game may have a low purchase price but require a large time investment, paid expansions, recurring online access, or a group schedule. Evaluate the complete commitment rather than the first checkout total.

- Trial time: How long until you can judge the core loop? Include installation, account setup, tutorials, and the first meaningful mission or match.
- Completion time: If you want a story, how long is a normal campaign? Separate a focused main path from optional activities.
- Continuation time: If the series is ongoing, how much regular play would you want each week or month to keep up?
- Coordination time: For co-op or competitive games, add the effort of scheduling friends, learning rules, and waiting for matchmaking.
Map the total cost
- Price of the specific entry and any edition differences.
- Required hardware, storage, accessories, or online service.
- Essential expansions or downloadable content, if the game is incomplete without them.
- Optional purchases that affect convenience, cosmetics, or progression.
- Future installments you would realistically buy, rather than every available title.
Set a personal ceiling before comparing prices. Current storefront prices, subscription catalogs, editions, and regional terms change, so verify the exact listing at the time of purchase. Do not assume that a game appearing in a catalog is available in every country or on every plan.

6. Verify platform, region, and social requirements
Platform fit is a hard requirement, not a minor preference. Confirm the exact game, edition, platform generation, and account region. A franchise can be widely discussed while a particular entry is absent from your device or unavailable where you live.
Check the multiplayer path
- Is online play optional or required?
- Does co-op support the number of people in your group?
- Can players on different platforms join the same session?
- Are saves, purchases, or progression shared across platforms?
- Does the game rely on voice chat, text chat, or a community you are comfortable using?
- Are there competitive ranks, seasonal resets, or time-limited events that demand regular attendance?
Separate catalog access from ownership
Xbox describes Game Pass as a catalog to which games are added over time. That makes a subscription a possible sampling route, but it does not establish that a particular franchise entry is currently included, available in your region, or present on your specific plan. Check the title’s live listing before planning a purchase-free trial. The same caution applies to any platform catalog.
7. Sample the franchise before you commit
Sampling is the highest-value step because it tests your reaction instead of your expectations. Use the least expensive legitimate route that gives you a fair look at the core experience.

- Choose one representative entry. Prefer the accessible starting point you identified, not necessarily the newest or most expensive edition.
- Confirm availability first. Check your platform, account region, edition, language, online requirements, and current catalog status.
- Play beyond the tutorial. Reach the first point where the normal loop repeats: a complete mission, a meaningful exploration segment, a full match, a building cycle, or a puzzle sequence.
- Record your immediate reaction. Note what you wanted to do next, what you avoided, and whether the friction came from the game or from setup.
- Test your real social mode. If you expect solo play, play alone. If the franchise is for friends, schedule a normal session rather than relying on a single promotional demonstration.
- Stop when the evidence is sufficient. You do not need to finish a long campaign to learn that its central activity is not for you.
Use a short post-sample checklist
- Would I choose another session without external pressure?
- Did the tone remain comfortable after the introduction?
- Did the controls and interface make the activity easier or harder?
- Can I explain the appeal to someone who has not played it?
- Would I still want it if the next installment were delayed?
8. Decide whether you want a finite story or an ongoing community
Two franchises can both be excellent while serving opposite commitments. A finite series gives you a defined arc and a natural stopping point. An ongoing series offers continuing updates, competition, events, or community activity but may change substantially over time.
Choose a finite series when you want
- A beginning, middle, and end you can complete on your own schedule.
- Less dependence on a current player population or seasonal calendar.
- The ability to pause for months without feeling behind.
- A predictable commitment after you buy the entry you want.
Choose an ongoing series when you want
- Regular reasons to return, such as new content, matches, challenges, or community events.
- A social routine with friends or a stable wider player base.
- Systems that reward long-term mastery rather than a single conclusion.
- Comfort with patches, balance changes, account requirements, and possible shifts in the active meta.
Neither format is inherently more valuable. The mistake is choosing one while expecting the other.
9. Follow the franchise only after choosing the entry
Once you have sampled a series and confirmed the practical details, use the platform’s follow tools so you do not have to monitor news manually. Steam says that following a game or franchise can generate email notifications when a related game releases or enters or leaves Early Access, and its storefront can surface other games connected to the franchise.

Use a wishlist for a specific game you may buy, and use a follow action for broader franchise or release awareness. Ignore or remove candidates that repeatedly fail your criteria; reducing recommendation noise makes future discovery more useful.

Use this process when you want a decision without turning research into an endless browsing session.
- Minutes 0–5: Write your activity, tone, session length, social mode, platform, and spending ceiling.
- Minutes 5–10: Gather three to five candidates from a storefront queue, curator list, platform collection, or trusted friends.
- Minutes 10–18: Fill in the six comparison axes: play style and tone, newcomer entry, sampling effort, platform and region, social fit, and finite versus ongoing structure.
- Minutes 18–23: Remove any candidate that fails a hard requirement, such as unsupported hardware, unavailable region, unsuitable social mode, or an unacceptable cost.
- Minutes 23–28: Pick the easiest legitimate sample and verify its current listing, edition, and requirements.
- Minutes 28–30: Choose a trial date. After playing, record whether you wanted another session and whether the central activity matched your brief.
If two candidates remain tied, select the one with the more reversible trial. You can return to the other later; a difficult-to-reverse purchase should not decide the comparison.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing by reputation alone
Problem: You select the most discussed series without checking its play loop or tone.
Correction: Describe what you will do repeatedly and sample that activity before buying a backlog.
Starting with the newest release automatically
Problem: The newest game may assume years of terminology, contain a complex live-service structure, or be a poor introduction.
Correction: Identify the most newcomer-friendly entry, then choose the newest title only if it also fits your social and time requirements.
Confusing a recommendation with evidence
Problem: A storefront algorithm shows a game, so you assume it matches your preferences.
Correction: Use recommendations to generate candidates, then verify the six axes and play a representative sample.

Ignoring region and edition differences
Problem: You plan around a catalog listing or feature that is not available on your account or in your country.
Correction: Check the live store page for the exact platform, edition, plan, and region before scheduling play or spending money.
Buying a bundle before testing the first game
Problem: A discount creates pressure to purchase several titles you may never play.
Correction: Test one entry first. Buy additional installments only when the first sample proves that the series deserves your time.
Picking a co-op franchise without a dependable group
Problem: The game is designed around coordinated play, but your friends’ schedules do not align.
Correction: Confirm solo quality, public matchmaking, cross-play, and realistic session times before committing.

When to change your mind
Following a franchise is not a permanent identity. Reassess when the central activity changes, your available time changes, friends move to another platform, or the series no longer offers the tone and social experience you wanted. A notification can tell you that a new installment exists; it cannot tell you that the installment still fits your life.
The strongest choice is therefore specific: one franchise, one verified entry point, one realistic way to sample it, and a clear reason you expect to return. If you cannot state those four things, keep the shortlist open rather than committing because a recommendation or community discussion made the decision feel urgent.
