If you want a historical story game with card-based deckbuilding, check those two qualities separately: a historical setting does not make a game a deckbuilder, and a narrative card game may not involve building a deck. The official descriptions reviewed here do not establish one game that reliably delivers both. Pentiment is a strong historical-story reference point, but it is an adventure, not a deckbuilder.
First, separate deckbuilding from narrative card play
In a deckbuilder, constructing or changing a deck is a central part of play. A game can use cards to tell a story without asking you to build a deck, while a deckbuilder can have story elements that do not meaningfully shape its events. Treat the genre label as a starting point, then confirm the gameplay loop in the game’s official description.
Nintendo’s official roundup makes the distinction useful: it identifies Slay the Spire and Monster Train as deckbuilding examples, and Signs of the Sojourner as a narrative card game. Those classifications help clarify mechanics; they do not establish that these games have historical settings.

Pentiment is a choice-led historical narrative adventure set in fictional Tassing and nearby Kiersau Abbey in sixteenth-century Bavaria. Its story follows an investigation and choices whose consequences affect the community. Obsidian describes the game as spanning a 25-year murder investigation, and its visual style draws on illuminated manuscripts, early printed books, and woodcut-inspired imagery. It is a useful reference if the historical world and consequential storytelling matter more to you than card mechanics. The US PlayStation listing identifies PS4 and PS5 versions and gives February 22, 2024 as the release date for that listing; check the store for your region and platform before purchasing.
Compare candidates on the qualities you actually want
When you find a possible match, assess these dimensions independently. Official descriptions are more useful when they explain what you do than when they rely on broad genre labels.

- Is deck construction central? Look for an explicit deckbuilding description and details about how you acquire, remove, or change cards. Card-based combat or dialogue alone is not enough to establish a deckbuilder.
- Do choices change events? Check whether the description says choices affect characters, outcomes, or the world, rather than merely presenting narrative between gameplay encounters.
- Does history shape the story? Distinguish a period-inspired art style from a setting tied to a specific time and place. Ask whether historical circumstances influence the investigation, conflicts, or decisions.
- Can you play it where you want? Verify the current platform listing and regional availability directly with the publisher or store. Platform support and release status can change.
- Does it meet your access needs? Check official accessibility details for features that matter to you. Obsidian’s Pentiment page includes accessibility information; do not assume its features apply to another game.
What All Will Rise does—and does not—establish
PC Gamer described All Will Rise as a “narrative courtroom deck-builder” set in Muziris in an article published June 7, 2025. That report called the game upcoming at the time; it does not verify its current release status or establish that its setting qualifies as historical. How to make the choice
- Decide which preference is non-negotiable. If deck construction is essential, start with games explicitly described as deckbuilders. If historical storytelling matters most, begin with historical narrative adventures such as Pentiment, understanding that it does not meet the deckbuilding requirement.
- Verify the other preference rather than inferring it. For a deckbuilder, look for a specific time and place and evidence that they matter to the story. For a historical narrative game, confirm that card-deck construction is actually central before calling it a deckbuilder.
- Check the current store page for your platform and region. Confirm availability and relevant accessibility details there, especially when an older article describes a title as upcoming.
