Choose a multitool by the jobs you will actually do, then check the exact model’s tools, weight, access, carry method, safety features, and travel restrictions. A high tool count is not automatically better: a light tool with pliers and cutters may be ideal for a hike, while a heavier model with scissors, a saw, files, and replaceable cutters may be worth carrying for camp repairs. Write down your likely tasks first and treat every specification as model-specific.

Start with the problems you need to solve

Before comparing brands or counting implements, list the small jobs you expect the tool to handle. Useful examples include gripping or adjusting hardware, cutting cord, tightening screws, opening packaging, trimming wire, sawing a small branch, or making a temporary camp repair. This list determines the tool architecture you need.

  • Gripping and adjustment: choose a plier-based multitool with needlenose or standard pliers and cutters.
  • Cutting cord, tape, or food packaging: look for a practical blade or scissors, depending on your preference and local rules.
  • Wood work: a dedicated wood saw is more useful than several rarely used drivers.
  • Fastening: check the screwdriver arrangement and whether a bit system or ratchet is available.
  • Compact everyday carry: a pocketknife-style tool may be more comfortable than full-size folding pliers.

Make a short “must have” list and a separate “nice to have” list. If a feature is not on either list, its presence should not justify additional weight or bulk.

Understand the main multitool designs

Plier-based multitools

These fold around a pair of pliers. They are suited to gripping, bending, cutting wire, tightening hardware, and general repairs. Their handles can provide leverage, but the folded package is usually thicker and heavier than a pocketknife-style tool. Check whether the pliers, cutters, blade, scissors, and drivers can be reached without unfolding the entire tool.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Pocketknife-style tools

These use a central body with individual implements folding out from the sides. They are often lighter and flatter, making them attractive for hiking or everyday carry. They can provide an excellent saw, scissors, blade, and screwdrivers without the bulk of plier handles, but they are less suitable when gripping or wire cutting is a primary task.

Specialized compact tools

Some models deliberately remove low-priority implements to reduce weight. The resulting tool may be easier to carry every day, but you must accept that a missing saw, scissors, file, or second blade cannot be improvised as conveniently. Compact designs make sense when your task list is narrow and predictable.

Compare tools by function, not the advertised count

Manufacturers count functions differently, so “15 tools” and “18 tools” are not directly comparable. Read the complete implement list and identify what each item does. Victorinox notes that functions such as scissors, a wood saw, and a seatbelt cutter vary by model; never assume that one model in a family includes the tools found on another.

Priority Check for Why it matters
Small repairs Pliers, wire cutters, drivers These are the core of a plier-based repair tool.
Camp preparation Scissors, blade, can or bottle opener Useful for food packaging, cord, tape, and general camp tasks.
Wood tasks Dedicated wood saw A saw is more controllable for small branches than forcing a knife to do the job.
Repeated fastening Bit system or ratchet A ratchet can reduce grip repositioning in tight or repetitive work.
Fine finishing File, small driver, tweezers Helpful for burrs, small screws, and precise jobs, but not essential to every user.

Confirm whether cutters are replaceable, whether drivers accept standard bits, and whether each implement locks. A tool list alone does not reveal how safely or conveniently the implements can be used.

Weight, size, and the cost of carrying more capability

Weight is a daily trade-off. Victorinox lists the 115 mm Swiss Tool X at 290 g and the 105 mm Swiss Tool Spirit X at 210 g, describing the Spirit family as the lighter choice. These are different designs, not a controlled performance comparison, but the figures show why dimensions and grams belong in the decision.

For another source-specific reference, The Gadgeteer reports a Skeletool at 5 ounces with seven tools and a Wave+ at 8.5 ounces with 18 tools. That guide describes the Wave+ as adding features including two blades, scissors, a saw, a file, and replaceable wire cutters. Treat those figures and feature descriptions as that guide’s reporting and verify the current manufacturer specifications for the exact model.

Victorinox lists the Fieldmaster (item 1.4713) at 100 g with 15 functions, including a wood saw and scissors. Its blade is listed as non-locking and not designed for one-hand opening. Because the Fieldmaster, Swiss Tool models, and plier tools use different architectures, their weights should be used as reference points rather than a laboratory ranking.

Check access, locking, and ergonomics

Access to frequent implements

Ask whether your most-used blade, scissors, or driver can be opened while the tool is folded. Some designs require opening the handles first; others expose selected implements from the outside. Faster access is useful for everyday tasks, while a more enclosed design can reduce accidental openings during storage.

Opening style and locking

Check the exact opening method: one hand or two, inside or outside access, and whether the implement locks in the open position. Do not infer these characteristics from a product family name. The Fieldmaster listing, for example, specifies a non-locking blade and no one-hand opening.

Handle comfort and leverage

Plier handles can concentrate force into your palm. Look for rounded edges, textured surfaces, and enough clearance for your fingers. If you will cut hard wire or tighten stubborn hardware, leverage and hand comfort matter more than an extra opener. If your work is mostly light cutting and opening, a thinner pocketknife-style handle may be preferable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ratchets and repetitive fastening

Victorinox explains that a ratchet can help in tight spaces or repetitive fastening by allowing you to tighten or loosen screws without repeatedly changing your grip. A ratchet adds another component, so include it only if your tasks justify the size and complexity.

Choose a carry method before you buy

A multitool is useful only when it is accessible and secure. Compare the carry solution with your clothing and activity:

  • Pocket clip: quick access and convenient for everyday carry, but it can add bulk and may snag.
  • Belt pouch or sheath: keeps a heavier tool off the bottom of a pocket and protects it when stored.
  • Pack carry: suitable when the tool is an emergency or repair item rather than something used every few minutes.
  • Loose pocket carry: simplest, but the tool can shift, collect debris, or open against other objects.

Victorinox says most of its models come with a leather or nylon pouch, but inclusion varies by model. Confirm whether a pouch or clip is supplied, sold separately, or compatible with the exact handle and tool length. A pouch that fits one model should not be assumed to fit another.

Camping, hiking, and everyday carry call for different compromises

For hiking

Prioritize low carried weight, secure storage, and the few functions you are likely to use away from a vehicle. A compact tool with scissors, a blade, and a driver may be enough for gear adjustments and minor repairs. Add pliers or a saw only when your route, equipment, or environment makes them genuinely useful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For established or vehicle-supported camping

Broader repairs can justify pliers, cutters, two blades, scissors, a saw, a file, and a more complete driver system. The extra capability is worthwhile when you expect tent hardware, stoves, cordage, or general equipment to need adjustment. If you are carrying the tool from a parking area to a campsite, its additional weight may matter less than it would on a long hike.

For everyday carry

Choose the tool you will carry consistently, not the one with the longest specification sheet. Pocket comfort, discreet storage, quick access, and local carry law may outweigh a saw or a large plier head. A non-locking blade, such as the one specified for the Fieldmaster, may suit some users but not others; check the rules and your preferred operating style.

Knife, workplace, and travel restrictions

A knife-equipped multitool creates legal and logistical obligations. The Transportation Security Administration’s U.S. “What Can I Bring?” guidance lists pocket knives and Swiss Army knives as prohibited in carry-on baggage and permitted in checked baggage. It also says sharp objects in checked luggage should be sheathed or securely wrapped, and that the TSA officer makes the final decision at the checkpoint.

That guidance applies to U.S. airport screening. It does not establish rules for other countries, trains, buses, workplaces, schools, venues, or local knife-carry laws. Before a trip, check the rules for the departure airport, destination, transit points, airline, and the specific tool. If you cannot verify that a knife-equipped tool is allowed, leave it at home or choose a non-bladed alternative where lawful and practical.

Maintenance and corrosion prevention

Routine cleaning

Brush out grit, wipe moisture from the implements, and let the tool dry before folding it closed. Dirt in pivots can make blades, scissors, and pliers feel stiff and can interfere with locking mechanisms. Victorinox recommends its multitool oil to maintain smooth function; follow the maker’s current instructions and use only a small amount at pivots.

Saltwater and marine exposure

If camping or working near saltwater, treat corrosion as a special risk. Marine guidance emphasizes rinsing salt and residue away with fresh water, drying the tool thoroughly, and inspecting pivots and locking parts. Apply this advice to saltwater exposure specifically; ordinary dry-land hiking does not require the same corrosion routine.

Service and warranty

Warranty coverage, exclusions, replacement parts, and claim procedures depend on the maker and product. Check the current warranty text and service process before purchase rather than relying on a general statement that all multitools are covered. Keep proof of purchase and record the exact model number if you may need parts or repair.

A practical buying process

  1. Write the task list. Name the small jobs you expect to perform on hikes, at camp, or during daily carry.
  2. Mark must-have implements. Decide whether pliers, cutters, scissors, a saw, a blade, files, or drivers are essential.
  3. Read the exact model’s tool list. Confirm every desired function, including whether cutters are replaceable and whether the driver accepts the bits you use.
  4. Inspect access and locks. Check one-hand or two-hand opening, outside access, locking behavior, and handle clearance.
  5. Compare real weight and dimensions. Use the manufacturer’s current specification for the exact model; use secondary guide figures only as attributed reference points.
  6. Choose the carry method. Verify whether the pouch or clip is included and whether it fits the model.
  7. Check legal and travel requirements. Review local carry laws, workplace policies, and route-specific transport rules before carrying a blade.
  8. Review care and service. Confirm oiling, cleaning, corrosion precautions, warranty scope, and repair options.
  9. Test the loaded carry setup at home. Walk with the tool in its intended pocket, pouch, or pack location and make sure it does not interfere with movement or other equipment.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying by function count: extra implements add weight and may never leave the handles.
  • Ignoring access: a tool that requires several steps to reach a frequent implement may be frustrating in real use.
  • Assuming family features: blade locking, one-hand opening, scissors, saws, and cutters can change between models.
  • Forgetting the carry accessory: a heavy tool without a secure pouch may be uncomfortable or unsafe to transport.
  • Using a knife as a saw: select a dedicated wood saw when branch cutting is part of the plan.
  • Taking it to an airport without checking: U.S. TSA carry-on rules prohibit the cited pocketknife and Swiss Army knife category, and other jurisdictions may differ.
  • Leaving grit or salt in the pivots: clean, rinse when appropriate, dry, and lubricate according to the maker’s instructions.

Bottom-line decision framework

Choose the lightest design that contains every function you genuinely need and that you can carry securely. For long hikes, weight and pocket or pack comfort usually deserve priority. For camp repairs, pliers, cutters, scissors, a saw, and a useful driver system can justify a heavier tool. For everyday carry, access, comfort, local legality, and consistent carry matter more than a maximum tool count. Verify the exact model’s specifications, accessory compatibility, current warranty, and travel rules immediately before buying or traveling.
