The right modem depends first on how your internet reaches your home and which provider you use. For cable, choose a device on your provider’s current approved list that supports your plan. For fiber, check the provider’s handoff equipment and router requirements before buying anything called a modem.
First, identify the equipment your internet service needs
A modem connects an incoming internet service to Ethernet; a router uses that connection to serve devices on your home network and provide Wi-Fi. A gateway combines modem and router functions. Google explains that a modem converts an inbound connection into Ethernet so a Wi-Fi router can connect to the internet: Google Home and Nest Help: What is a modem?
- Cable: A cable modem or approved gateway may be required. Check your provider’s device list and your plan’s speed requirements.
- Fiber: The provider may supply an ONT or another handoff device, such as a Fiber Jack. You may only need a compatible router; do not assume a cable modem is part of the setup.
- Building Ethernet: An apartment, dorm or other building may deliver internet through an Ethernet wall jack. Depending on the building’s network, you may need a router for household Wi-Fi but no separate modem.
If you have cable service, Xfinity says customer-owned equipment must be compatible with its service and support the subscribed speed; it directs customers to its current list of compatible devices: Xfinity’s own-modem guidance.
Check provider approval, not just the modem label
Compatibility is provider-specific. Before buying a cable modem, search your internet provider’s current equipment list for the exact model and confirm it is approved for your plan and any services you use. A device that works with one cable provider is not automatically approved by another.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Certification is useful, but it does not mean universal provider approval. CableLabs says certified or qualified devices have passed tests for compliance with the applicable specification and demonstrated interoperability with other certified devices: CableLabs certification. Providers can impose additional requirements. Spectrum, for example, describes a process that includes CableLabs and FCC certification as well as Charter’s own certification: Spectrum’s DOCSIS modem policy. Treat the provider’s live device list or policy as the decisive check.
Decide whether you need a modem, router or gateway
| Setup | What it does | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone modem | Connects the provider’s service to Ethernet. | Provider approval, plan-speed support, Ethernet port speed and any voice-service requirement. Add a separate router for Wi-Fi in most setups. |
| Router | Shares an internet connection among local devices and provides Wi-Fi. | Whether your provider’s handoff can connect directly to it, its WAN and LAN port speeds, Wi-Fi capabilities and compatibility with your network setup. |
| Gateway | Combines modem and router functions in one device. | Provider approval and speed support, built-in Wi-Fi suitability, and whether bridge mode is available if you want to use another router. |
Xfinity notes that most modems need a separate router to provide Wi-Fi. A gateway can combine the functions, but do not assume every gateway supports the Wi-Fi coverage, mesh system or advanced network configuration you want.

Match the equipment to your plan’s speed
Check the device’s supported plan tiers and Ethernet ports, not just a headline Wi-Fi generation or maximum speed printed on the box. The connection can be limited by the modem, the router’s WAN or LAN ports, Ethernet cabling, or the client device. For multi-gig service, every relevant wired link needs to support the intended rate.
Google Fiber’s own-router guidance illustrates how requirements vary by plan: it specifies 1 Gbps Ethernet WAN and LAN for its 1 Gig plan, and 10 Gbps WAN with 2.5 Gbps or faster LAN for multi-gig plans. These are Google Fiber requirements, not universal standards. The same guidance lists Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 router options: Google Fiber: Use your own router.

What to compare before choosing a device
- Provider approval: Confirm the exact device and service tier on the provider’s current list or policy.
- Download and upload support: Check that the provider supports the modem for the speeds and features in your subscription.
- Ethernet ports: Match modem and router port speeds to the plan, especially for multi-gig service.
- Voice service: If your internet provider also supplies phone service, verify that the device supports the required voice feature.
- Modem-only or gateway: Choose a separate modem and router for a modular setup, or an approved gateway if its built-in router fits your needs.
- Router coverage and features: Consider the home layout, Wi-Fi requirements and whether you need mesh or particular network controls.
- Support: Check what troubleshooting help the provider offers for customer-owned equipment.
Connect the equipment for your service type
Cable modem with a separate router
- Connect the modem to the provider’s coaxial cable connection.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the modem’s Ethernet output to the router’s WAN or internet port.
- Power on the devices and follow the provider’s activation steps for the modem and the router manufacturer’s setup instructions.
Fiber handoff with your own router
Follow the provider’s instructions for its ONT or handoff device. For Google Fiber, connect the router to the Fiber Jack with Ethernet and configure the router according to its manufacturer’s directions. If an existing provider router is part of the setup, bridge mode may be needed in some configurations. See Google Fiber’s own-router instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If Wi-Fi is slow, check the whole connection
A slow wireless result does not by itself show that the modem is the problem. Check the subscribed speed, provider provisioning and device compatibility, router capabilities and placement, wired port speeds, and the limits of the device running the test. Compare a wired test with a Wi-Fi test where possible: Google Fiber says a wired connection to a router or switch provides the fastest and most reliable connection. Its device-connection guidance is at Google Fiber: Connect devices to your network.
