Choose a carrier for the places you use your phone most, then treat satellite connectivity as a backup—not as a substitute for regular cell service. Before switching, check the carrier’s current coverage map, the satellite features actually available, whether your exact phone and software qualify, and what those features cost on your plan. In the U.S., T-Mobile offers T-Satellite, Verizon describes satellite messaging on select phones, and AT&T’s satellite offering is still developing; these are not equivalent services.
Start with ordinary coverage, not the satellite feature
Compare conventional voice and data coverage at home, work, and along your regular routes. Satellite-to-phone connectivity is a supplemental extension for certain coverage gaps. It does not make a carrier’s satellite footprint equivalent to its terrestrial network, and messaging availability should not be read as a promise of ordinary voice service or broadband data.
The FCC’s Supplemental Coverage from Space framework concerns satellite use of spectrum held by a participating mobile network operator. That regulatory arrangement helps explain how a satellite service can extend a carrier’s reach, but it is not a consumer feature list or guarantee of service at a particular location. See the FCC’s FCC 24-136 order and the NTIA Spectrum Innovation Hub’s overview of direct-to-device service.
Compare what each carrier offers today
| Carrier | What its public materials describe | What to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| T-Mobile | T-Satellite with Starlink, described as direct-to-cell connectivity. Its service page presents both an included-plan pathway and a paid add-on pathway, and also discusses access for non-T-Mobile customers. | Current availability, supported functions, eligible plans or add-on terms, price, and whether your exact phone is compatible. See T-Mobile’s T-Satellite page. |
| Verizon | Satellite messaging outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage on select phones with updated software. Verizon says messaging works through iMessage or Google Messages rather than a separate app. | Current device list, software requirements, availability, and plan terms. See Verizon’s satellite messaging page. |
| AT&T | A satellite solution being developed with AST SpaceMobile to integrate with its wireless network and fill outdoor coverage gaps. | Whether a consumer service has launched, where it is available, which phones and functions it supports, and any plan or price terms. The page surfaced here does not establish a definitive consumer launch date or a comparable current plan offer. See AT&T’s satellite solutions page. |
The available carrier materials do not establish a complete, like-for-like current comparison of price, coverage, and features. Check the live service and plan pages before switching or buying an add-on; do not assume that a satellite feature described by one carrier matches another carrier’s offer.

Check whether your phone and software are eligible
Satellite support is device-specific. Verizon’s page lists select Samsung Galaxy S25, Z Fold7, and Z Flip7 models, as well as Google Pixel 9 series phones or later, and says updated software is required. Its supported-device list can change. T-Mobile also requires a compatible phone. Check the exact model—not just the phone brand or product family—and required software with the carrier before relying on the feature.
If you are considering switching carriers, first ask whether your existing phone qualifies on the new network. A satellite feature is not, by itself, a reason to replace a phone unless the carrier confirms your current model is unsupported and the feature is important enough to justify the cost.

Match the satellite feature to the situation you need it for
Write down where you expect to be without normal service and what you need to do there. A messaging feature may be useful for sending a short update or seeking help, but it is not evidence that calls, general internet access, or every app will work. Confirm the exact supported communication functions for the carrier and phone you are considering.
- Check the destination: Look for current service availability where you plan to use the phone; a broad coverage claim does not confirm access at every outdoor location.
- Check the environment: Review any stated need for a clear view of the sky and other location restrictions. Buildings, terrain, or other obstructions may affect access.
- Check the use case: Confirm whether the service supports the message type or other communication function you need, rather than inferring it from the phrase “satellite service.”
- Keep a backup plan: Do not rely on satellite messaging as your sole emergency communication plan.
Verify plan cost and terms before switching
Satellite service may be included with some plans or available through an add-on, depending on the carrier and current terms. The available official materials do not support a complete current price comparison across the three carriers. Check the current price, eligibility, any included allowance or limits, and whether the feature applies to every line on your account. Do not treat a plan pathway shown on a service page as proof that it is included in your own plan.

Understand what the planned carrier venture means
On May 14, 2026, AT&T announced that AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon had an agreement in principle to form a joint venture using satellite-based direct-to-device technology to address coverage gaps. The announcement says existing carrier-satellite agreements would remain. An agreement in principle is a planned initiative, not proof that a unified service or plan is already available to consumers. See AT&T’s announcement.

- Identify the satellite gap: Pinpoint where you expect to lose terrestrial service and check whether the carrier says satellite service is available there.
- Confirm the capability: Verify whether the current offer supports the messaging or other function you need, and note any sky-view or geographic limits.
