Choose a microSD/TF card that uses the UHS-I interface, carries a V30 or faster video-speed rating, is formatted as exFAT, and has a capacity of 1TB or less. Insta360 warns that slower cards can interrupt recording or corrupt files, and its X Series compatibility guidance advises against UHS-II and UHS-III cards even when their speed labels look higher.

For a low-risk purchase, use an exact model from Insta360’s tested list, such as the 256GB SanDisk Extreme V30 A2 (SDSQXAV-256G-GN6GN) or the 256GB Lexar 1066x microSD UHS-I SILVER Series (LMS1066256-BN). Model numbers matter: a product-family name alone does not prove that a particular listing was tested.

The four requirements that determine compatibility

The X4 Air’s card requirements are narrower than a general “fast microSD” recommendation. Check every item below before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Requirement What to select Why it matters
Card type microSD or TF The camera’s slot is designed for this physical format.
Interface UHS-I Insta360’s X Series FAQ warns against UHS-II and UHS-III because interface compatibility problems can prevent recording.
Video-speed class V30 or higher Insta360 specifies V30 or above for normal recording. A higher-looking label does not override an unsupported interface.
File-system format exFAT The X4 Air storage guidance calls for exFAT cards.
Capacity Up to 1TB 1TB is the manufacturer’s stated maximum supported capacity.

“Please use exFAT format microSD cards of speed classes UHS-I and V30 or above to ensure normal recording.” — Insta360 X4 Air File Storage documentation.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

These are compatibility conditions, not a ranking of premium versus budget cards. A card can advertise an impressive maximum transfer rate and still be unsuitable if it is UHS-II, UHS-III, a different physical format, incorrectly formatted, or outside the supported capacity range.

How much capacity should you buy?

Insta360 specifies a maximum of 1TB, but the right capacity depends on how you use the camera and how often you can offload footage. The official material does not publish recording-time estimates for each capacity, so it would be misleading to promise a particular number of hours.

Choose 64GB or 128GB for frequent offloads

A smaller card can be practical if you transfer clips to a phone or computer after each outing. It reduces the amount of footage at risk if the card is lost or damaged and usually fits a workflow in which the camera is emptied regularly. The trade-off is less room for long trips, multiple shooting days, or high-volume 360-degree footage.

Choose 256GB for a balanced everyday setup

256GB is a sensible middle choice when you want several shooting sessions before transferring files but do not need the largest supported card. Insta360 lists 256GB configurations in both of the named third-party families discussed below. Capacity alone does not make one card safer than another; the exact interface, speed class, model, and condition still matter.

Choose 512GB or 1TB for long trips and infrequent transfers

Higher capacities reduce the need to stop and copy files during travel, events, or multi-day projects. They also make it easier to keep original footage until you have verified a backup. A 1TB card is within the stated limit, but it should not be treated as a guarantee that every 1TB product will work: the model must still meet the interface, speed, format, and compatibility requirements.

Do not buy beyond 1TB

Insta360’s current X4 Air storage guidance and compatibility FAQ identify 1TB as the maximum supported microSD capacity. A larger card is outside that specification, so it is not a defensible choice for this camera.

Cards Insta360 lists as tested

Insta360’s X4 Air file-storage page names particular families, capacities, and in several cases model numbers that it tested. Treat the table as a verification aid, not as a blanket approval for every card sold under a family name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Family listed by Insta360 Capacities identified in the tested list Exact identifiers supplied in the list How to use the information
SanDisk Extreme V30 A2 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB SDSQXAH-064G-GN6GN; SDSQXAA-128G-GN6GN; SDSQXAV-256G-GN6GN; SDSQXA1-512G-ZN6MA; SDSQXA1-1T00-ZN6MA Match both capacity and model number to the listing you are considering.
SanDisk Extreme Pro V30 A2 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB The official table lists model numbers; the individual identifiers are not stated in the available documentation. Use the official table to verify the exact identifier before purchase.
Lexar 1066x microSD UHS-I SILVER Series 64GB through 512GB LMS1066256-BN is identified for the 256GB version. Confirm that the listing says UHS-I and that its model corresponds to the tested capacity.
Insta360-branded cards and selected SanDisk V30 A1 models Various configurations The available documentation does not reproduce every identifier. Consult the manufacturer’s current compatibility table for the exact capacity and model.

Two concrete 256GB alternatives from that tested material are the SanDisk Extreme V30 A2 SDSQXAV-256G-GN6GN and Lexar 1066x UHS-I SILVER LMS1066256-BN. Insta360 does not claim that one performs better than the other, so they should be treated as alternatives rather than ranked winners. The manufacturer recommends its official memory card while also documenting tested third-party options.

How to compare a card listing before you buy

  1. Read the interface marking. Look specifically for UHS-I. Do not infer compatibility from a V30, V60, V90, U3, or “professional” label if the card is identified as UHS-II or UHS-III.
  2. Confirm the video-speed class. The listing should state V30 or a higher V class. If the seller gives only a generic “fast” description and no video-speed class, there is not enough evidence to confirm suitability.
  3. Check the physical format. It must be a microSD/TF card, not a full-size SD card or another removable-storage format.
  4. Match the model number. Compare the alphanumeric identifier printed on the card or packaging with Insta360’s tested table. Two cards that share a family name can have different capacities, revisions, or interfaces.
  5. Keep capacity at or below 1TB. Do not substitute a larger card because its price per gigabyte appears attractive.
  6. Plan to format it as exFAT. A card that arrives with another file system may need to be reformatted before recording.
  7. Check the return policy and source. Availability and pricing change, and the official material does not establish current retailer inventory. Buy from a source that lets you return a card that fails the camera’s recognition or recording checks.

Price, advertised peak transfer rates, and a product-family reputation are secondary shopping criteria. The compatibility checklist above should eliminate unsuitable cards before those factors influence the decision.

Read the markings in the right order

Retail listings often place several badges beside one another. Evaluate them in an order that matches Insta360’s requirements rather than assuming the biggest number is best.

  1. Start with the interface. Find “UHS-I” in the specifications or on the card. If the card is UHS-II or UHS-III, stop there; a V60 or V90 badge does not make an unsupported interface suitable.
  2. Then find the video-speed class. Look for the letter V followed by 30 or a larger number. A listing that says only “high speed,” “U3,” or gives a peak read speed without a V class does not independently confirm the required recording rating.
  3. Check capacity and physical type. Confirm that the item is microSD/TF and no larger than 1TB. Do not assume a full-size SD card with an adapter is the same purchase as a tested microSD card.
  4. Finally, compare the complete model code. Capacity, suffixes, and regional packaging can distinguish cards that look nearly identical in photographs. Save a screenshot of the listing and compare it with the identifier printed on the delivered card.

“A2” appears in several SanDisk families on Insta360’s tested list, but A2 is not a substitute for the required UHS-I, V30-or-higher, exFAT, and capacity checks. Treat it as part of the model name, not as the compatibility decision by itself.

Capacity planning by workflow

Capacity Best fit Trade-off
64GB Short outings with same-day transfer Less headroom for consecutive sessions or travel.
128GB Regular shooting with frequent phone or computer offloads Requires a deliberate transfer routine to avoid filling the card.
256GB General-purpose use and several sessions between backups Still requires backups before reformatting; capacity does not replace model verification.
512GB Longer trips, events, or fewer opportunities to copy files A larger card can hold more footage before you notice a backup problem.
1TB Maximum supported space for extended shoots Only choose a 1TB configuration that meets the other requirements and matches a listed model.

This table is a workflow guide, not a recording-duration chart. Insta360 does not publish a fixed number of hours for each capacity in the cited storage guidance, and actual file volume depends on how and how often you shoot.

Set up a new card in the X4 Air

Formatting erases existing data. Copy anything you need before starting, and verify that the card is the one you intend to use.

  1. Inspect the card and packaging. Confirm that it is microSD/TF, marked UHS-I, rated V30 or higher, and no larger than 1TB. If the model number is available, compare it with Insta360’s tested list.
  2. Insert the card into the camera. Seat it fully in the X4 Air’s card slot and close the cover as specified by the camera’s hardware instructions.
  3. Format through the camera or Insta360 app. Insta360’s guidance recommends formatting the microSD card via the camera or the Insta360 app. Use the format control provided there so the card is prepared as exFAT for the camera.
  4. Make a short recording. Record a brief clip, stop normally, and play it back in the camera. This catches recognition or write problems before an important shoot.
  5. Transfer and verify the file. Copy the test clip to a phone or computer, open it, and confirm that the complete file is present. A successful transfer gives you a baseline for future troubleshooting.
  6. Label the card for the camera. If you maintain several cards, note which one has been tested with the X4 Air and keep its model and capacity recorded.

Formatting in another device can leave a card with a file system or structure the camera does not expect. Use the camera or Insta360 app when preparing the card, and format again there after securely backing up any footage.

The camera does not recognize the card

  1. Power the camera down, remove and reseat the microSD card, and restart.
  2. Verify the card is microSD/TF, UHS-I, V30 or higher, and no larger than 1TB.
  3. Check that the card is formatted as exFAT. Back up any needed files before reformatting through the camera or Insta360 app.
  4. Test the card in another compatible device, such as a computer with a suitable reader. If the second device also cannot read it, the card or reader is suspect; if it works elsewhere, the camera, seating, or camera-side compatibility deserves attention.
  5. Compare the exact model number with Insta360’s tested list. A card from an apparently suitable family may still be a different revision or interface.

Recording interrupts or files are corrupted

Stop using the card for important footage until the cause is isolated. Insta360 warns that slower cards can cause interruptions or file corruption. Recheck the V30-or-higher and UHS-I requirements, then format the card in the camera or app after backing up anything readable. If the problem persists, test a known listed model rather than repeatedly recording to a card whose suitability is uncertain.

A high-speed card still fails

Do not assume that a larger V-class number solves the problem. The X Series FAQ specifically cautions against UHS-II and UHS-III cards because of interface compatibility. A card can therefore be “faster” on its label yet unsuitable for the X4 Air. Return to the interface marking and exact model check.

Back up and maintain the card

  • Transfer regularly. Insta360 recommends moving recordings to a phone or computer on a regular basis. Do this before the card becomes full or before an important trip’s only copy accumulates.
  • Keep two copies of important footage. A card is temporary working storage, not a backup. After transfer, open several files and confirm that they play before deleting or reformatting the card.
  • Format only after verification. Formatting removes the camera’s files. Confirm that the destination copy is complete and readable first.
  • Use the camera or app to format. This follows Insta360’s stated workflow and avoids carrying over a file system that the camera may not handle correctly.
  • Protect the physical card. Keep it in a case, avoid moisture and extreme heat, and do not remove it while the camera is writing. These handling practices reduce avoidable data loss, but they do not turn an untested model into a tested one.
  • Retire unreliable media. Repeated interruptions, disappearing files, or recognition failures are reasons to stop trusting a card for original footage, even if it occasionally works.

Practical buying decisions

If you want the simplest defensible choice

Select a 256GB card whose exact identifier appears in Insta360’s tested table. The SanDisk Extreme V30 A2 SDSQXAV-256G-GN6GN and Lexar 1066x UHS-I SILVER LMS1066256-BN are two named examples. Verify the identifier on the actual listing, then format the card in the camera or app.

If you need the most space within the specification

Choose a tested 1TB configuration, such as the SanDisk Extreme V30 A2 SDSQXA1-1T00-ZN6MA, after confirming that the listing matches the model number. The 1TB figure is a device limit, not a promise of a particular recording duration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you swap cards between devices

Give the X4 Air its own card whenever possible. Cards formatted or used by another device may not be exFAT or may contain files you have not backed up. A dedicated, tested card makes it easier to preserve the camera’s expected format and to diagnose problems.

If a store lists only a family name

Ask for the capacity and model identifier before buying. If the seller cannot provide them, you cannot establish that the specific item is one of Insta360’s tested configurations. Choose a listing with complete markings or a clear return option instead.

What the official guidance does not establish

Insta360’s published material for this topic identifies compatibility requirements, tested models, formatting guidance, and troubleshooting steps. It does not establish current prices, retailer stock, recording time by capacity, or a performance ranking between the listed third-party cards. Those variables change by region, seller, firmware, shooting settings, and date, so they should not be used as fixed specifications when selecting a card.

Are UHS-II or UHS-III cards compatible?

Insta360’s X Series compatibility FAQ advises against UHS-II and UHS-III cards because interface compatibility problems may prevent recording. Choose UHS-I instead, even if another card advertises a higher V-class number.

Is V30 enough, or do I need V60 or V90?

Insta360 specifies V30 or above. A higher V rating is not required by the published guidance and does not override the UHS-I interface requirement.

Which 256GB cards are named by Insta360?

The tested list includes the SanDisk Extreme V30 A2 SDSQXAV-256G-GN6GN and Lexar 1066x microSD UHS-I SILVER Series LMS1066256-BN. Insta360 does not rank one above the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I format the card on a computer first?

Prepare the card through the X4 Air or the Insta360 app as directed by Insta360. Back up any existing files first because formatting erases data.

What should I do if the camera does not recognize a card?

Power down and reseat it, verify microSD/TF, UHS-I, V30-or-higher, exFAT, and capacity no greater than 1TB, then test it in another compatible device. Compare its exact model number with Insta360’s tested table.

Why did recording stop even though the card says it is fast?

A slower or incompatible card can interrupt recording or corrupt files. Recheck the V30 and UHS-I requirements; a UHS-II or UHS-III card can fail despite an impressive speed label. Format the card in the camera or app after backing up readable files.

The Bottom Line

For the Insta360 X4 Air, buy a microSD/TF card that is UHS-I, V30 or faster, exFAT, and 1TB or smaller. The safest shortcut is to match an exact tested model, such as the 256GB SanDisk Extreme V30 A2 SDSQXAV-256G-GN6GN or 256GB Lexar 1066x UHS-I SILVER LMS1066256-BN, then format it in the camera or Insta360 app and verify a short test recording before an important shoot.
