Think you need a lot of money to start investing? You may not: some brokerages let you buy fractional shares or place dollar-based orders, so you can invest less than the price of a whole share. The right app depends on what you want it to do, what it costs at your likely balance, and how much control you want over investments. “Can I invest with just a few dollars?” Often, but minimums and eligible investments vary by provider.
What a micro-investing app actually does
“Micro-investing app” is not one standard product category. An app may help you save, recommend or manage investments, let you buy and sell securities, or combine those functions. The SEC’s Saving and Investing Apps guide recommends understanding the service and checking the registration status of brokers and investment advisers.
For a beginner, distinguish between an app that automates deposits or portfolio choices and a brokerage app where you select investments yourself. Automation can make regular contributions easier, but it does not eliminate the need to understand fees, investment risks, or how to exit the service.

How to compare apps before opening an account
Check the minimum and what you can buy
A fractional share is less than one full share. Some firms let customers invest a set dollar amount rather than buy a whole share, but each brokerage decides which stocks or funds are eligible and what minimums apply. The SEC’s fractional-share bulletin explains that order types, execution timing, liquidity, voting rights, and transferability can also differ.
#1 Best Overall

- Ideal calculator for students, managers and statisticians

Confirm that the app offers the securities and account type you actually want. A low advertised starting amount does not mean every investment is available at that amount.
Compare total fees with your likely balance
Look beyond a headline trading commission. Add recurring subscription or advisory charges, fund expenses, and any account or ancillary fees. A flat monthly charge takes a larger percentage of a small account than of a large one. In a hypothetical example, the SEC’s 2023 bulletin says a $3 monthly subscription fee on a $500 account totals $36 per year, more than 7% of the account’s value; it is an illustration, not an industry average or a fee quote for any one app. See the SEC’s subscription-based advisory fees bulletin and its guide to how fees and expenses affect a portfolio.

Decide how much automation and control you want
Some services use round-ups or scheduled deposits, and some make or manage portfolio choices. Others let you pick individual stocks or ETFs and schedule recurring purchases. Read what the service will do automatically, what you must choose, and whether you can change or pause the schedule.

Fractional holdings may not transfer to another brokerage in the same way as whole shares. Depending on the firm’s rules, you may need to sell them when moving an account. Order handling and the ability to sell can also depend on liquidity and platform terms. Check the account agreement for how fractional positions are executed, voted, sold, and handled if you transfer or close the account.

Keep the risks and your goals in view
Starting with a small amount does not make investing safe or guarantee growth. Investments can lose value. Before choosing an app, consider your goal, when you may need the money, your tolerance for losses, diversification, liquidity, and costs. Investor.gov’s guides to investing on your own and investment products explain these considerations.
