Choose a managed threat-hunting service by proving three things before you sign: the provider can see the systems and telemetry that matter, its analysts hunt for ransomware precursors rather than only reacting to alerts, and its response authority and handoff are written into the contract. The label “managed hunting” is not standardized; one proposal may describe proactive hunting, another a full managed detection and response (MDR) service, and a third may stop at an investigation report.
Use your asset inventory, incident plan and recovery priorities as the comparison baseline. Require a written coverage map, ransomware-specific hunt examples, service levels, customer responsibilities, access controls and an escalation playbook. Treat hunting as one part of the preparation, prevention, mitigation, response and recovery program described in CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide, not as a substitute for protected backups, least privilege, logging or restoration planning.
What a managed threat-hunting service actually does
Threat hunting is the proactive search for attacker behavior that automated detections may miss. Analysts form hypotheses, query available telemetry, investigate suspicious patterns and escalate findings with evidence. A managed service performs some or all of that work for you, using provider analysts and technology connected to your environment.
The important qualification is “connected to your environment.” A provider cannot investigate an identity, endpoint, cloud workload, email system or network segment it cannot access. Ask whether hunting occurs in your existing tools and data, in the provider’s interface, or in both. The answer determines what blind spots remain and who must close them.

Service names are not universal categories. A hunting-only service might deliver scheduled or continuous investigations and written findings while leaving alert triage and containment to your team. An MDR service commonly combines monitoring, detection, investigation and response actions. Incident-response retainers focus on handling confirmed incidents and may not provide continuous hunting. The reviewed public descriptions do not establish one industry-wide definition, so compare deliverables rather than labels.
Start with your ransomware outcomes and critical assets
Before evaluating suppliers, document what the service must protect and what a successful response looks like. CISA recommends asset inventory, identification of critical systems, least privilege, comprehensive logging, protected backups and prioritized restoration. Turn each recommendation into a requirement the bidder must answer.
Build a coverage baseline
- List identity systems, including Active Directory, cloud identity providers, privileged-access platforms and service accounts.
- List endpoint populations by operating system, business criticality, location and ownership. Include servers, virtual machines, administrator workstations and operational technology where relevant.
- Identify cloud services, storage, SaaS applications, email, remote-access infrastructure, VPN concentrators and network controls that could expose or contain an intrusion.
- Mark backup servers, repositories, hypervisors, shadow-copy infrastructure and recovery-management systems as critical assets.
- Record log sources, retention periods, collection health and any systems that cannot run an agent or export events.
Give the inventory to every bidder and require a coverage matrix showing included assets, required licenses, expected event types, retention and exclusions. Ask how coverage is measured over time and how a newly deployed system is added. A statement such as “we monitor your environment” is not a measurable commitment.
Define the business decision the service must support
Decide in advance which actions are acceptable during a suspected ransomware event. For example, isolating a user workstation may be automatic, while disabling a domain administrator or shutting down a production server may require approval. Identify systems where an interruption could create safety, regulatory or operational consequences. These decisions should appear in the response playbook, not be improvised during an incident.
Compare service models by deliverables
| Model | Typical work | Questions to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Managed threat hunting | Proactive searches for suspicious behavior, analyst investigation and findings or escalations. | How often do hunts run? Are investigations continuous or scheduled? Who handles alerts outside hunt activity? Is containment included? |
| Managed detection and response | Telemetry collection, detection, alert triage, investigation and some device-level or account-level response. | Which response actions are authorized? What monitoring hours and response targets apply? Which assets and licenses are required? |
| Incident response service | Investigation, containment, eradication, coordination and recovery support after a suspected or confirmed incident. | Is there a retainer or separate charge? How quickly can the team engage? Does it provide ongoing hunting between incidents? |
| Security monitoring or SIEM service | Log collection, correlation and alert handling, sometimes with analyst review. | Is proactive hypothesis-driven hunting included, or only alerts generated by existing rules? |
Offerings can overlap. For example, Microsoft describes Defender Experts Hunting as a managed service focused on novel, emerging threats and proactive hunting across endpoints, while CIS describes its MDR service as device-level protection and response against known and unknown malicious activity. Those descriptions illustrate different scopes; they do not prove that either service is suitable for your organization or that the offerings are directly comparable.
Evaluate telemetry coverage before analyst claims
Ask bidders to map each ransomware use case to the exact data required. A hunt that depends on process creation, command-line arguments, identity events or VPN authentication cannot be performed reliably if those events are absent, filtered or retained for only a few hours.
Identity and access telemetry
- Newly created accounts, group membership changes and elevation to privileged roles.
- Interactive and non-interactive logons, authentication failures, impossible-travel indicators and unusual VPN access.
- Use of service accounts, dormant accounts and administrative tools from atypical hosts.
Endpoint and server telemetry
- Process launches, scripts, command lines, parent-child relationships, persistence changes and security-tool tampering.
- File and registry changes associated with credential theft, lateral movement or encryption preparation.
- Changes to shadow copies, backup agents, disk journaling, boot configuration or recovery settings.
Cloud, email and network telemetry
- Cloud control-plane activity, new access keys, unusual API calls, storage access and changes to security controls.
- Mailbox rules, suspicious forwarding, malicious attachments, credential-harvesting links and sign-ins from unfamiliar locations.
- Remote administration, lateral connections, unusual data transfer and command-and-control indicators.
Require a written list of excluded sources and a process for reporting blind spots. Ask what happens if a collector, agent or integration goes offline: Is there an alert, a service-level clock, a customer notification or merely a missing-data gap? Coverage should be reviewed against the critical-asset inventory whenever systems or business processes change.
Demand ransomware-specific hunt content
Generic “threat hunting” language is not enough. Ask the provider to demonstrate hypotheses, data queries or analyst workflows using sanitized examples. CISA’s guide gives concrete areas to test.

Privilege and identity abuse
Ask how analysts investigate a newly created or escalated Active Directory account, unexpected membership in a privileged group, and administrative activity from a workstation that normally has no such role. The provider should explain the baseline it uses, the evidence it collects and the threshold for escalation.
Unusual remote access
Use an anomalous VPN login as a tabletop example. The analyst should correlate source location, device identity, authentication method, time of day, concurrent sessions and subsequent activity. Ask whether the service can disable a session or account, who approves that action and how a business-critical user is handled when the signal is ambiguous.
Precursor malware and lateral movement
Ransomware may follow an earlier compromise that was not resolved. Ask how the service searches for credential theft, remote administration, persistence, lateral movement and command-and-control activity that precede encryption. A provider should explain how it widens the search from one alert to related hosts, accounts and time periods.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAttempts to impair recovery
Ask specifically about changes that disable or interfere with backups, shadow copies, disk journaling, boot configurations or recovery tools. Request an example investigation showing the affected asset, initiating account or process, timeline, confidence and recommended containment. If backup systems are outside the provider’s visibility, require that limitation to be prominent in every relevant report.
Hunt frequency and detection engineering
Clarify whether hunts are scheduled, continuous, triggered by intelligence or initiated by your request. Determine who writes and tunes detections, how new ransomware tradecraft is incorporated, and whether your analysts receive hypotheses and findings they can reuse. Ask how the provider avoids repeatedly searching the same narrow indicators while missing changes in your environment.
Make the operating model and response authority explicit
Obtain service hours, analyst coverage, escalation targets and customer obligations in writing. “24/7 monitoring” may not mean 24/7 proactive hunting, and a response target may begin only after an alert is accepted as valid.
Set measurable service levels
- Time to acknowledge a customer-submitted concern.
- Time to begin investigation after a high-confidence signal.
- Time to notify named customer contacts.
- Update frequency while an investigation or incident bridge is active.
- Availability target for telemetry collectors and customer-facing portals.
Ask how severity is assigned, who may change it and what happens when the provider misses a target. Require named escalation contacts, an alternate contact path and an after-hours procedure.
Define permitted containment actions
For each action, document whether the provider may execute it automatically, execute it after notifying you, or recommend it for your approval:

- Isolate an endpoint or server.
- Disable or reset an account, revoke tokens or terminate sessions.
- Block an indicator at endpoint, email, DNS, firewall or identity controls.
- Stop a process, remove persistence or quarantine a file.
- Initiate an incident bridge or contact an external incident-response team.
Include safeguards for false positives, production systems, safety-critical assets and legal or regulatory notification requirements. If the service is hunting-only, state clearly that your team owns these actions and must be staffed to perform them.
Require useful evidence and a complete handoff
An escalation should let your team make a decision without repeating the provider’s investigation. Specify the minimum report contents:
- Executive summary and current confidence level.
- Timeline with timestamps and time zone.
- Affected and potentially affected assets, accounts and data sources.
- Observed techniques, indicators and supporting events.
- What the analyst ruled out and what remains unknown.
- Containment recommendations, urgency and business impact.
- Actions already taken by the provider and their results.
- Requests for customer decisions, evidence or access.
Ask what happens after the first alert. Does the provider coordinate eradication, validate that an attacker has been removed, support restoration or hand the case to your team or a separate incident-response supplier? CISA treats investigation, response and recovery as connected work, but a named hunting service may stop at detection. Your agreement should identify the boundary and the records you receive at handoff.

Test the recovery connection
Include backup and restoration owners in a tabletop exercise. Confirm that a suspected compromise of backup infrastructure triggers the right escalation, that recovery priorities are known and that the provider can distinguish a production outage from an intentional containment action. Hunting cannot compensate for untested backups or an undefined restoration order.
Assess provider access and third-party risk
CISA advises organizations to account for third-party and managed-service-provider risk, formalize security requirements and limit third-party access to what is needed for the role. Apply those principles to the provider’s tools and personnel.
- List every privilege, integration, agent and administrative account required.
- Require least-privilege roles, phishing-resistant authentication where available and separate duties for investigation and response.
- Confirm that provider access is logged, reviewed and available to you for audit.
- Ask how credentials, tokens and collected data are protected and rotated.
- Identify subcontractors, support locations and the countries in which analysts or data may be located.
- Specify incident-notification deadlines if the provider’s systems or credentials are compromised.
- Define data retention, deletion at termination and your rights to retrieve investigation records.
Ask for a process to suspend provider access quickly without destroying evidence. Verify who can approve emergency access and how that access is recorded. Do not accept a broad standing administrator role when a scoped integration or just-in-time privilege can perform the work.
Check prerequisites, geography and contract terms
Provider-specific prerequisites may include endpoint or identity licenses, agents, cloud permissions, log-retention capacity, network changes, integrations and customer staff for approvals. Microsoft publishes prerequisites for its managed hunting service; use that as a reminder to request the exact prerequisites for the edition and geography you are buying, not as a universal checklist.

Use a repeatable shortlist exercise
Give each finalist the same scenarios and require the same artifacts. This exposes differences that marketing descriptions hide.
- Send the asset and telemetry inventory. Mark critical systems, excluded networks, backup infrastructure and current logging gaps.
- Request the coverage map. Require included sources, exclusions, licenses, retention, collection health and the process for closing gaps.
- Run three ransomware scenarios. Use a newly privileged account, an anomalous VPN login and a change that interferes with backups. Ask for the data required, analyst steps, expected evidence and escalation path.
- Run a response tabletop. Ask who isolates a host, disables an account, blocks an indicator and starts an incident bridge. Include a production server and a false-positive branch.
- Review a redacted report. Check whether a customer analyst could understand the timeline, confidence, affected assets and decisions required.
- Validate access controls. Inspect roles, authentication, audit logs, subcontractor governance and emergency-access procedures.
- Confirm prerequisites and service levels. Put technical, geographic, staffing, retention and response commitments in the proposal and contract.
- Pilot before broad deployment. Start with representative endpoints, identity sources and backup systems; test data loss, escalation and containment procedures before expanding.
Score proposals on evidence, not slogans
| Category | Evidence to require | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Critical-asset coverage | Inventory-to-telemetry map with exclusions and remediation owners. | “Full visibility” without a source list. |
| Ransomware hunts | Hypotheses covering privilege abuse, remote access, precursor activity and recovery impairment. | Only generic malware or indicator searches. |
| Response | Action matrix, approval rules, severity targets and after-hours contacts. | “We notify you” with no timing or authority. |
| Evidence | Sample timeline, affected-asset list, confidence and recommended actions. | A ticket containing only an alert name. |
| Access security | Least-privilege design, audit logs, credential controls and subcontractor terms. | Permanent broad administrator access. |
| Handoff and recovery | Incident bridge, eradication, validation and restoration boundaries. | No answer after initial escalation. |
| Readiness | Licenses, integrations, retention, onboarding tasks and customer staffing. | Prerequisites deferred until after signature. |
Weight categories according to your risk. An organization with a small security team may assign more weight to containment authority and incident coordination; an organization with strong internal response may prioritize hunting depth, telemetry engineering and high-quality evidence. Record why a proposal receives each score so procurement and security leaders can challenge assumptions.
Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying a label instead of a scope
“Managed hunting,” “MDR” and “monitoring” can describe overlapping services. Read the activities, data sources, hours and outputs. If proactive hunting is not listed, assume it is not included until confirmed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIgnoring blind spots
A provider may cover endpoints while missing identity, cloud control-plane, email or backup telemetry. Require the coverage map and a written risk statement for every excluded critical source.
Assuming detection equals containment
An analyst can identify an attack without having authority to isolate systems or disable accounts. Put every permitted action and approval dependency in the playbook.
Leaving recovery out of the conversation
Ransomware defense includes protected backups and prioritized restoration. Ask how the service handles suspected backup tampering and where its responsibility ends.
Granting excessive provider access
Convenient standing administrator rights increase third-party risk. Prefer scoped permissions, strong authentication, audited actions and a rapid revocation process.

Skipping a pilot
Onboarding can reveal missing logs, incompatible agents, noisy detections and unclear contacts. Test representative systems and an after-hours escalation before committing to full coverage.

Useful public services and context
CISA lists no-cost cyber-hygiene services such as vulnerability scanning, web-application scanning and remote penetration testing. These assessments can help identify exposure, but they are not described as commercial managed threat-hunting services and do not replace continuous investigation or incident response. Use them to improve your baseline, then evaluate managed services against the remaining operational need.
In announcing an updated ransomware guide in 2023, CISA Executive Assistant Director for Cybersecurity Eric Goldstein said: “We must collectively evolve to a model where ransomware actors are unable to use common tactics and techniques to compromise victims and where ransomware incidents are detected and remediated before harm occurs.” The implication for buyers is practical: select a service that helps prevent, detect and remediate activity across the systems you actually depend on.
Final decision checklist
- Our critical-asset inventory and recovery priorities were supplied to every bidder.
- Each proposal maps assets and telemetry to included hunts and identifies blind spots.
- Ransomware scenarios cover privilege escalation, anomalous remote access, precursor compromise and recovery impairment.
- The service model states whether it is hunting-only, MDR, incident response or a combination.
- Hours, severity definitions, response targets and customer responsibilities are contractual.
- Containment authority and approval rules are documented for accounts, endpoints, indicators and production systems.
- Escalation reports include evidence, timeline, confidence, affected assets and next decisions.
- Provider privileges, audit logs, subcontractors, data retention and termination procedures meet your requirements.
- Prerequisites, licensing, geography, staffing and integration limits are known before signing.
- A pilot or tabletop has tested telemetry loss, false positives, after-hours contact and recovery handoff.
The strongest proposal is not the one with the broadest service label. It is the one that can demonstrate visibility into your highest-value systems, show how its analysts investigate ransomware precursors, act within agreed authority and deliver evidence your team can use to contain, eradicate and recover.

What minimum telemetry should a ransomware-hunting service receive?
At minimum, map identity and privileged-account events, endpoint process and security changes, VPN or remote-access logs, cloud control-plane activity, email signals, network connections and backup or recovery-system events to your critical assets. The exact set depends on your architecture; require the provider to document exclusions and retention.
Is managed hunting the same as MDR?
No. Managed hunting may focus on proactive investigations, while MDR commonly adds continuous monitoring, alert triage and response actions. Providers use these terms differently, so compare hours, data sources, outputs and containment authority rather than the name.
Can a small IT team use a hunting service without buying incident response?
It can, but only if the team can perform the actions left outside the service. Confirm who isolates systems, disables accounts, coordinates communications and supports recovery. If those responsibilities exceed your staffing, include MDR or an incident-response arrangement.
Are CISA’s no-cost scanning services a replacement for managed threat hunting?
No. CISA describes vulnerability, web-application and remote penetration-testing services as cyber-hygiene assessments. They can reveal exposure, but they are not described as continuous managed hunting or incident response.
