Choose the task before you choose the model. Then match the model’s parameter size, quantization, context length and runtime to the memory your computer can actually provide. The only reliable final check is a short trial with representative prompts on the intended machine; no single model size or VRAM number is best for every workload.

This guide gives you a repeatable way to make that choice, using current catalog and setup guidance available on October 13, 2026. Model names, quantizations, runtimes and hardware change quickly, so treat the examples as dated reference points rather than permanent compatibility promises.

Start with a five-step decision

  1. Name the workload: general chat, writing, coding, image understanding, embeddings/RAG or another specialized task.
  2. Inventory the computer: GPU model and VRAM, system RAM, operating system and whether memory is shared or unified.
  3. Choose a model variant: compare parameter size, quantization and context needs, not just the headline model name.
  4. Pick a runtime: use the backend whose controls and interface fit your workflow.
  5. Test before committing: run the same representative prompts and compare quality, latency, context handling, reliability and memory behavior.

The sequence matters. Starting with a fashionable model and trying to force it onto unsuitable hardware usually produces an unusable context window, swapping, crashes or disappointing speed. Starting with the job and the machine narrows the catalog to realistic candidates.

What “local AI model” means

A local model runs inference on hardware you control instead of sending every prompt to a hosted service. A local installation can offer more control over files and network access, and it avoids a per-token bill from a hosted API. Those advantages do not automatically establish that a particular model is free to use, that its runtime never communicates over a network, or that its license permits your intended redistribution. Check the model license and the runtime’s network behavior separately.

Local inference is a stack rather than a single download:

  • Model family: the trained system and its capability profile.
  • Parameter size: a broad indicator of computational and memory demand, not a guarantee of answer quality.
  • Artifact and quantization: the file variant and numerical representation you load. Different artifacts of the same family can have materially different memory requirements.
  • Context: the amount of conversation, code or retrieved text kept available for one generation. A larger context raises the memory requirement.
  • Runtime: the software that loads the artifact, schedules work and exposes a chat or API interface.

Keeping those layers separate prevents a common mistake: assuming that a model’s advertised parameter count alone tells you whether it will run well.

Step 1: Define the work the model must do

General chat and writing

For conversation, summarization and drafting, look for a general language model with a context window large enough for your documents and a style you can evaluate with a few prompts. A smaller model that answers your actual questions consistently can be a better choice than a larger one that leaves too little memory for the context you need.

Coding

Coding workloads need more than fluent prose. Test instruction following, multi-file reasoning, code edits, explanation of errors and the model’s ability to preserve constraints. Include a real function or issue from your project in the trial set, with private details removed if necessary. Catalog labels can identify families marketed for tools or reasoning, but they do not prove performance on your language, framework or repository.

Image understanding

If the job includes screenshots, diagrams or photographs, select a model variant that explicitly supports vision. A text-only model cannot gain image understanding merely because it is larger. Confirm that the chosen runtime can load the multimodal artifact and that your intended operating system supports that path.

Embeddings and retrieval-augmented generation

Embeddings models produce vectors for search and retrieval rather than conversational answers. If you are building a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system, choose an embedding-capable family for indexing and a separate generation model for responses when the workflow requires both. The Ollama model library exposes capability labels such as tools, thinking, vision and embedding; use those labels to narrow the catalog, then verify quality on your own data.

Specialized tools and agents

Tool use, structured output and long-running agent loops add requirements beyond ordinary chat. Test whether the runtime and model agree on the tool-calling format your application expects. A model that chats well in a desktop window may still fail when an application requires valid JSON or dependable function selection.

Step 2: Inventory the machine before downloading anything

Record GPU and VRAM

Write down the exact GPU model and its available VRAM. NVIDIA’s published recommendations are explicitly framed around available VRAM on NVIDIA devices; they should not be silently generalized to Apple Silicon, CPU-only computers or AMD hardware. A GPU with more VRAM is a conditional upgrade option only when the model, artifact and context you selected do not fit your current system.

Record system RAM

System RAM can be involved when a runtime keeps part of a model or its working data outside dedicated GPU memory. The amount you need depends on the artifact, context and runtime settings. More RAM does not compensate for every GPU limitation, and a machine can have enough total memory while still lacking the bandwidth or dedicated VRAM needed for a responsive experience.

Check for shared or unified memory

Some platforms let the processor and graphics hardware draw from one pool. In that case, the number shown as total memory is not equivalent to dedicated VRAM, and the operating system and other applications also consume part of the pool. Treat the usable amount for inference as a moving limit rather than assuming the entire advertised capacity is available to the model.

Note the operating system and free capacity

Record the operating system, available disk space and whether you can install the runtime you prefer. Model artifacts can be large, and keeping more than one candidate requires additional storage. Leave memory and disk headroom for the operating system, the runtime and your application instead of planning to use every last gigabyte.

Step 3: Match model size, artifact and context to memory

Model size is only the first filter. The same family may be offered in several quantizations and file formats. A quantized artifact generally uses less memory than a higher-precision version, with a possible quality trade-off. The context window also consumes memory, so a model that loads with a short prompt may fail or slow dramatically when you paste a long document.

NVIDIA’s current playbook provides the following example bands. They are the vendor’s guidance for its device workflow, not an independently validated universal sizing chart. The page was accessed on October 13, 2026, and its model catalog and recipes can change.

Available VRAM band NVIDIA example model How to interpret it
8–16 GB Qwen 3.5 9B Example starting point for this VRAM range in NVIDIA’s guide.
16–24 GB Qwen 3.6 35B Vendor example; verify the exact artifact, context and runtime before loading.
24–48 GB Qwen3.8 27B Vendor example for this band.
48–128 GB Qwen3.8 27B The current page repeats the 27B recommendation in this larger band; treat the repetition as stated guidance, not proof that every 27B artifact uses the full range efficiently.
128–256 GB Qwen3.8-Flash-Next Vendor example for high-memory systems.
256–384 GB DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731 Vendor example for this band.
384–500 GB GLM5.3 Flash Vendor example for this band.
500 GB+ GLM 5.3 Vendor example for systems with at least 500 GB of available VRAM.

Those rows do not mean that every model will fit at every point in a band. Confirm the artifact’s stated memory needs, set the context you actually intend to use and keep headroom for the runtime and other applications. On non-NVIDIA hardware, use the table only as a reminder that memory capacity matters; obtain platform-specific guidance and then test.

Why context changes the answer

Two users can select the same model and need different amounts of memory. One may ask short questions with a small context; another may keep a long conversation, attach code and retrieve several documents. The second workload can exceed the first user’s memory even when the model file is identical. Decide the maximum practical prompt and response length before treating a model as compatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why quantization changes the answer

Quantization stores weights in a more compact numerical representation. The file name or tag usually identifies the variant, and the runtime may expose several choices. Lower-memory variants can make a model usable on smaller hardware, but quality, speed and supported features can differ. Compare like with like when testing: changing both the model family and quantization makes it hard to tell what caused an improvement or regression.

Step 4: Choose a runtime that matches your workflow

The backend determines how you install models, tune memory and connect applications. NVIDIA characterizes three common routes differently:

Runtime Workflow emphasis described by NVIDIA Best fit when you value
llama.cpp More control over speed and memory. Fine-grained control, scripting or integration work.
LM Studio Bionic A low-setup desktop route for trying models. A graphical way to download and experiment with candidates.
Ollama A simple way to manage models and connect them to applications. Quick model management and an application-facing workflow.

These are workflow distinctions, not a ranking for every user. A technically experienced user may prefer a controllable backend; someone evaluating several models may value a simpler desktop interface. Check each project’s current operating-system support and documentation before installation.

The dated NVIDIA example

NVIDIA’s worked procedure is Windows on an RTX Spark using Qwen3.8-27B. It identifies a Q4_K_M recipe and presents llama.cpp, LM Studio Bionic and Ollama paths. The Ollama tag used in that procedure packages Q4_K_M. Treat those details as a dated setup example, not a guarantee that the same tag, recipe or hardware path will remain unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the live NVIDIA “Run LLMs on Your NVIDIA Device” playbook for the current recipe and prerequisites. If you choose another operating system, GPU vendor or artifact, follow that platform’s instructions instead of copying assumptions from the RTX Spark example.

Step 5: Test candidates on the actual computer

Catalog labels and published memory bands narrow your search; they do not establish which model is best for your task. A short, repeatable trial is more informative than a leaderboard score that uses a different prompt, context or runtime.

Build a representative prompt set

Use five to ten prompts that resemble real work. Include at least one ordinary request, one difficult edge case and one long-context example. For coding, use a sanitized issue from your own project. For RAG, ask questions whose answers are present and absent in your test documents. For vision, include the image types you actually handle. Keep the prompts unchanged across candidates.

Measure the dimensions that affect your decision

  • Answer quality: correctness, completeness, citation or source discipline and adherence to your instructions.
  • Reliability: whether the model follows the requested format repeatedly rather than succeeding once.
  • Latency: time to first useful output and whether generation speed remains acceptable for your workflow.
  • Context handling: whether important details survive as the prompt grows.
  • Memory behavior: peak usage, swapping, crashes, failed loads and whether other applications remain usable.
  • Operational effort: how difficult it is to install, update, stop, restart and connect the model to your tools.

Record the model family, exact artifact or tag, quantization, context setting, runtime version and hardware for every trial. Otherwise a later result cannot be reproduced.

Use a simple decision rule

First eliminate candidates that cannot load the required context without instability. Among the survivors, prefer the smallest model that meets your quality and reliability threshold at an acceptable speed. Move to a larger model only when the smaller one fails a requirement that matters to your work. This rule preserves headroom and makes future updates less painful.

How to interpret common outcomes

The model will not load

Check that you downloaded the intended artifact, that the runtime supports its format and that enough VRAM or system memory is free. Reduce the context setting and close other memory-intensive applications as a diagnostic. If the artifact still cannot load, select a smaller or more compact variant rather than assuming a driver change will solve a fundamental capacity limit.

It loads but is unusably slow

Compare the same prompt with a shorter context and with fewer background applications. Determine whether the runtime is moving work between GPU and system memory. A smaller model or a more compact artifact may deliver a better overall result than a larger model that spends most of its time waiting on memory transfers.

Quality is poor despite comfortable memory

More capacity does not guarantee better answers. Confirm that the model family matches the task, that you selected a capability such as vision or embeddings when needed and that the prompt gives clear constraints. Test another family at the same approximate memory budget before buying hardware.

Long documents cause failures

Shorten the context for a diagnostic run, then add material gradually. If the model works only at a context too small for your job, choose an artifact and runtime that can support the required context or split the task into retrieval and focused generation. Do not advertise the model as suitable merely because a short prompt succeeded.

The application cannot use the model

Verify the runtime’s API, tool-calling and structured-output support against the application’s requirements. A desktop chat interface and an application integration can expose different capabilities. Keep the working model and runtime versions recorded so an update that changes a format or endpoint can be rolled back.

Privacy, licensing and offline claims need separate checks

Running inference locally can reduce the need to send prompts to a hosted provider, but “local” is not a complete privacy specification. Check whether the runtime downloads updates, reports usage or makes optional network requests, and configure network access according to your threat model. Also read the model license for commercial use, redistribution, attribution and prohibited applications. NVIDIA describes local operation as offering “privacy, control, and unlimited free experimentation without any token anxiety,” but that is the vendor’s characterization, not a guarantee about every model’s license, operating cost or network behavior.

When a hardware upgrade is justified

Consider more VRAM only after you have identified the exact model family, artifact, context and runtime that fail on your current system. A larger GPU can be relevant when memory capacity is the limiting factor, but it may not fix a model that is inaccurate for your task, a runtime that lacks a required feature or an application bottleneck elsewhere. If your current hardware can run a smaller candidate that meets your quality threshold, upgrading is optional rather than a prerequisite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Document the failed requirement in concrete terms: for example, the selected artifact could not load at the required context, or the runtime became unstable while another application was open. That evidence is more useful than choosing hardware from a model’s parameter count alone.

Keep the choice current

Model catalogs, tags, quantizations, runtimes and hardware support evolve. Recheck the Ollama catalog, the llama.cpp project and the NVIDIA playbook when you revisit a decision. Re-run your representative prompt set after changing a model artifact, quantization, context, runtime or driver. A result that was valid for one dated combination should not be generalized to every later release.

A printable selection checklist

  • Write the primary workload and two failure cases the model must handle.
  • List GPU model, usable VRAM, system RAM, operating system and shared-memory behavior.
  • Set the minimum context length your real prompts require.
  • Use capability labels to shortlist families, then verify the exact artifact and license.
  • Choose a runtime whose control level and integration path fit your workflow.
  • Leave memory headroom for the operating system, runtime and other applications.
  • Run identical representative prompts on at least two viable candidates.
  • Record quality, reliability, latency, context behavior, memory use and setup effort.
  • Prefer the smallest stable candidate that clears your quality threshold.
  • Recheck live documentation before upgrading hardware or standardizing a deployment.

The Bottom Line

The best local model is the smallest, task-appropriate variant that fits your real context with headroom and remains reliable at an acceptable speed. Use catalog labels and NVIDIA’s dated VRAM examples to narrow the field, select a runtime that suits your workflow, and let a controlled test on your own machine make the final decision.
