Choose life insurance by measuring the financial loss your family would face if you died, then match the policy’s benefit, duration and premium to that need. Count lost income and unpaid work, debts, final expenses, child-care and education costs, special-care obligations, available assets and the number of years each need will last. Term insurance is usually built for a defined period; whole, universal and variable life are cash-value forms intended for longer-duration coverage. The right policy is the one your family can keep in force for as long as the need exists.

What life insurance does—and what it does not promise

A life insurance policy is a contract that pays a death benefit to the beneficiaries you name when the insured person dies, subject to the contract’s terms. The benefit can replace earnings, pay debts and final costs, fund care or education, and give survivors time to adjust financially. It does not automatically make every family financially secure: the amount, exclusions, premium schedule, beneficiary designations and other provisions determine what the contract actually does.

Rules, policy forms and producer licensing can vary by state. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) advises consumers to check their state insurance department and read the policy and illustration, rather than relying on a general description of a product.

Step 1: Map the money and services your family would lose

Start with the person’s economic contribution, not an income multiple. A stay-at-home parent, caregiver or business owner may provide substantial value even when their wages are low or zero. List each responsibility and the cost of replacing it.

Income and unpaid work

  • Record the insured person’s current after-tax contribution to household spending, including bonuses or commissions that the family regularly relies on.
  • Price services the household would need to buy: child care, transportation, cooking, home maintenance, elder care, disability support or administrative work.
  • For a business owner or specialist, consider the cost and time required to replace their role, train someone else or wind down the business.

People who depend on the insured

Identify a spouse or partner, children, a dependent adult, aging parents and anyone else who receives regular financial or practical support. Note when each person is likely to stop needing support. A child’s need may end after education or early adulthood; a child with special needs may require lifelong housing, medical care and supervision.

Debts and immediate costs

List mortgages, home-equity loans, student loans, car loans, credit cards, personal guarantees and other obligations that survivors could inherit or need to settle. Add funeral and final expenses, probate-related costs where applicable, and an emergency reserve while the household reorganizes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Child care, education and special-care needs

Estimate the full cost of replacing a parent’s care, not just the cost of a few hours of day care. Include after-school care, summer coverage, transportation, tutoring, housing and health-related expenses. For a child with special needs, account for ongoing medical care, therapies, accessible housing, equipment, advocacy and a lifetime support plan.

Resources that reduce the insurance need

Inventory cash savings, investments, retirement accounts that survivors can access, existing life insurance, employer coverage, a partner’s income and other dependable resources. Count only assets that are realistically available for this purpose; an account earmarked for another essential goal should not be treated as spare cash. Consider inflation and the effect of taxes, fees or market losses on resources you expect to use.

Question What to record Why it matters
How much income does the person provide? Net earnings, variable pay and benefits the household depends on Shows the size of the replacement-income need
What unpaid work would disappear? Caregiving, transport, home tasks and professional services Reveals costs a wage-only estimate misses
Who depends on the person? Names, ages, support received and expected end date Connects the benefit to the duration of each obligation
Which debts and final costs remain? Balances, interest, funeral costs and other settlement expenses Prevents survivors from using income-replacement money for immediate bills
What resources already exist? Savings, investments, employer coverage and other insurance Prevents buying more coverage than the family’s net need

Step 2: Turn the inventory into a coverage amount

Use a needs-based calculation. Add the obligations that would arise after death, subtract resources that survivors can actually use, and allow for the years over which support is required.

  1. Settle immediate costs. Add final expenses, urgent bills, debt payments and a cash reserve.
  2. Replace income and services. Estimate the annual amount needed to maintain the household and buy replacement care or labor.
  3. Fund known future goals. Include child-care years, education, housing adaptations and special-care commitments.
  4. Subtract dependable resources. Deduct usable savings, existing coverage and other assets after considering access, taxes and volatility.
  5. Choose a time horizon. Match the calculation to the years each obligation lasts and review the result when assumptions change.

For example, a household might separately calculate eight years of child care, 15 years of income support, a mortgage balance and a special-care reserve, then deduct savings and an employer policy. Those are planning categories, not a recommendation or a prediction of any family’s costs.

An NAIC consumer page mentions that some insurance experts suggest five to eight times current income. It does not identify those experts or present the multiplier as a standard, and the same guidance favors working through individual needs. Treat the figure as an unverified rule of thumb—not a target or a substitute for the inventory above.

Do not assume the largest possible benefit is automatically best. A benefit that forces you to drop the policy after a few years can leave the family with less protection than a sustainable amount kept in force through the entire need.

Step 3: Decide how long protection must last

Duration should follow the last year of the obligation you are insuring. A policy can be sized for a mortgage, the period until children become independent, the years until retirement income begins, or a longer care responsibility.

When a defined term fits

Term life covers a specified period and pays only if the insured dies during that term. NAIC examples include 10-, 20- and 30-year level-term structures. This design can fit a temporary income-replacement need or a debt with a known payoff horizon, and it generally does not accumulate cash value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a term long enough to reach the latest important obligation, not merely the next financial milestone. If a child will need support for 18 years, a 10-year term may leave a gap unless another policy or savings plan covers the remaining years.

Renewal and conversion details

Some term contracts permit renewal without new proof of insurability. Renewal premiums can rise substantially, and the renewal right may end at a stated age. A nonrenewable policy requires a new application after the term if you still want coverage. Some contracts allow conversion to a permanent policy by a deadline, sometimes without new medical underwriting. Check the actual premium schedule, conversion deadline, eligible products and maximum conversion age in the contract.

Step 4: Understand the main policy types

Type Coverage design Premium and value features Questions to ask
Term life Protection for a defined period; pays if death occurs during that term Usually lower-cost for a specified period; most policies do not build cash value Is the term long enough? Are renewal premiums and conversion rights clear?
Whole life Cash-value policy intended for longer-duration coverage Commonly uses a set premium schedule and includes policy values governed by the contract Which values are guaranteed, and what happens if premiums stop?
Universal life Cash-value coverage with more flexible premium timing Premiums must be sufficient to keep the policy in force; values and charges depend on the contract What minimum premium is required, and how sensitive is the policy to lower payments or interest assumptions?
Variable life Cash-value coverage whose value is linked to investment options Values depend on investment performance and can fall; illustrated values are not guarantees unless the contract says they are What investment risk, fees and guaranteed minimums apply?

There is no universally best type. Compare the years of protection required, the premium your household can sustain, the guarantees you need and whether a cash-value feature solves a specific problem. A household may evaluate term, permanent coverage or a combination, but the choice should follow the needs analysis rather than a sales slogan.

Step 5: Compare policies on the same basis

Request proposals that use the same insured amount and duration whenever possible. Comparing a 20-year policy with a 30-year policy, or a guaranteed premium with a flexible illustration, can make a cheaper offer look better than it is.

Comparison point What to examine
Benefit and duration Death benefit, term length, end date, exclusions and any reductions over time
Premium now and later Initial premium, scheduled increases, renewal cost, payment frequency and consequences of missed payments
Guarantees Guaranteed death benefit, guaranteed premiums, guaranteed cash values and the conditions attached to each
Non-guaranteed elements Illustrated dividends, interest credits, investment returns or bonuses that can change
Renewal and conversion Whether new medical evidence is required, the deadline, eligible policies and age limits
Cash-value mechanics How value accumulates, surrender charges, loans, withdrawals, fees and what happens if payments are reduced
Insurer and jurisdiction Licensing in your state, financial-strength information and the company’s ability to service the contract

Ask the agent to separate guaranteed figures from assumptions. In a variable policy, investment performance is uncertain; in other cash-value policies, credited rates or dividends may also be non-guaranteed. Read the illustration alongside the policy form so you know which figures are contractual.

The NAIC recommends comparing similar policies from more than one company and confirming that the agent and insurer are appropriate for your jurisdiction. State insurance departments can explain licensing and consumer protections that differ locally.

Step 6: Apply accurately and read the contract

Underwriting uses the information in your application to determine eligibility, classification and price. An inaccurate answer can create delays or disputes, so answer health, lifestyle, occupation and financial questions completely and ask the agent to correct any mistake before signing.

  1. Gather records: income documents, existing policies, beneficiary information, medical details and debt balances.
  2. Confirm the quote: verify the insured amount, term, premium class, payment frequency and whether the price is guaranteed.
  3. Review the illustration: mark every guaranteed and non-guaranteed value, charge, surrender schedule and lapse condition.
  4. Read the issued policy: compare it with the application and quote, check the free-look period that applies in your state, and ask questions in writing.
  5. Store the documents: tell beneficiaries where the policy, insurer contact information and premium instructions are kept.

Do not replace an existing policy casually

Keep current coverage in force until replacement insurance has been issued, delivered and reviewed. A new application can cost more, and a change in health can make you ineligible or move you to a higher premium class. Ending an old policy may also trigger surrender charges, loss of accumulated values or a new contestability period under the replacement contract. Compare the old and proposed benefits, guarantees, exclusions, conversion rights and total premiums before authorizing a replacement.

Set beneficiaries deliberately

A primary beneficiary is first in line to receive proceeds if eligible under the policy. A contingent beneficiary receives them if the primary beneficiary has died before the insured. Name people or entities in a way the insurer can identify, and understand how a minor beneficiary’s proceeds would be handled under your state’s law; a trust or custodial arrangement may require professional advice.

Review designations after marriage, divorce, remarriage, birth or adoption, a beneficiary’s death, a change in custody, or a change in the intended use of the money. A will does not automatically override a policy designation, so coordinate the documents rather than assuming they match.

Review the policy as your family changes

Review coverage every few years and whenever a major event changes the financial exposure. Recalculate after:

  • a new child, adoption or dependent adult entering the household;
  • marriage, divorce or the loss of a partner’s income;
  • a promotion, job change, business launch or retirement plan;
  • a mortgage, major loan, payoff or change in education plans;
  • a new disability, caregiving responsibility or special-care diagnosis;
  • the end of an employer policy or a change in its benefit amount.

At each review, check the death benefit, remaining term, premium, beneficiary records, insurer contact details and whether the policy still matches the years of support required. A review may show that you need more coverage, less coverage, a different duration or simply an updated beneficiary—not necessarily a replacement policy.

Common mistakes and practical fixes

Using an income multiplier as the entire analysis

Why it fails: It ignores unpaid care, debt, special needs, existing assets and the duration of obligations.
Fix: Complete the income, services, obligations, resources and time-horizon inventory first.

Buying a term that ends before the need

Why it fails: Renewal may be expensive or unavailable at an older age.
Fix: Match the term to the latest major obligation and verify renewal and conversion provisions before buying.

Treating an illustration as a promise

Why it fails: Investment returns, credited rates and dividends can change.
Fix: Label every figure as guaranteed or non-guaranteed and test whether the policy still works under less favorable assumptions.

Choosing a premium the household cannot sustain

Why it fails: A lapse can remove the protection when the family needs it most, and reinstatement may require new underwriting.
Fix: Stress-test the payment against job loss, childcare changes, interest-rate increases and other foreseeable shocks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving beneficiaries unchanged

Why it fails: An outdated designation can send proceeds to an ex-partner, a deceased person’s estate or an arrangement that no longer reflects your wishes.
Fix: Review designations after every major family change and confirm the insurer recorded the update.

A decision path you can use before signing

  1. Write down who depends on the insured and what income or services would disappear.
  2. List debts, final costs, care, education and other obligations, with the year each one ends.
  3. Subtract usable savings, existing insurance and other dependable resources.
  4. Choose the coverage duration that reaches the last significant obligation.
  5. Compare term and cash-value designs at the same benefit and duration where possible.
  6. Separate guaranteed premiums and benefits from values that can change.
  7. Confirm renewal, conversion, surrender, lapse and beneficiary provisions in the contract.
  8. Buy only a premium the family can maintain, then schedule a review after major life changes.

The NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide states, “You should choose a policy with features that fit your individual needs.” That is the practical test: the policy should cover the family’s actual financial exposure for the required years, use understandable guarantees, and remain affordable enough to stay in force.
