Choose a Kubernetes consulting partner by matching its proven production work, proposed delivery team, and operating commitments to your environment and goals. CNCF’s Kubernetes Certified Service Provider (KCSP) designation and individual certifications such as CKA can help screen candidates, but neither replaces references, a clear scope, or verification of who will do the work.
Start with the outcome you need
Before approaching providers, define the work you want done. A new platform, a migration, a reliability improvement, cost control, a security review, and an operations handover require different evidence and delivery skills. Write down the environment involved—such as your Kubernetes distribution, cloud or on-premises infrastructure, and surrounding tools—and what a successful engagement would leave your team able to do.
Use that brief consistently with every candidate. Ask providers to describe comparable engagements, their role in each, the results delivered, and which responsibilities remained with the customer. A broad Kubernetes capability claim is less useful than a concrete example that resembles your intended work.
What KCSP status tells you—and what it does not
The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) describes KCSP as a pre-qualified tier of vetted Kubernetes service providers. The program covers support, consulting, professional services, and training. Its published entry requirements include at least three engineers who have passed the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) exam, enterprise end-user support, an English-language Kubernetes professional-services page, and CNCF membership. CKAD does not count toward the three-engineer CKA requirement. Check the current requirements and listing on the CNCF KCSP program page.
#1 Best Overall
KCSP is an organizational qualification screen, not a project guarantee. The program page does not establish a provider’s current capacity, availability in your region, experience with your specific workload, customer satisfaction, price, or the quality of the team proposed for your work. Confirm those matters directly and speak with relevant customer references.
CNCF distinguishes KCSP service providers from training partners. KCSPs provide support and consulting; training partner qualifications focus on training capability, references, and instructors who have passed the relevant exam before teaching exam-mapped courses. If your need is implementation or operations support, a training-partner designation alone does not establish those capabilities. See the CNCF Training FAQ.
Use credentials as evidence, not as a verdict
CNCF identifies CKA as an administrator credential and Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS) as a security specialist credential; the exams are performance-based. Ask which members of the proposed team hold credentials relevant to your project, then probe for hands-on work in a comparable environment. A credential can show validated knowledge, but it does not by itself demonstrate delivery experience with your distribution, infrastructure, workload, or operating constraints. CNCF’s training and certification catalog describes its credentials.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDo not confuse software conformance with consulting quality. CNCF says conformance supports API consistency and interoperability between Kubernetes installations, and certified vendors must provide the latest Kubernetes version yearly or more frequently to remain certified. That is a property of software conformance, not proof that a consulting firm can deliver your project or that a proposed design meets your security, reliability, or cost objectives. See CNCF’s software conformance explanation.

Compare candidates with the same scorecard
Score each candidate against your own risks and internal capabilities. A migration and a 24/7 platform-support engagement should not receive identical weighting: prioritize the capabilities most consequential to your work. Use the same questions for each provider so that differences in scope and responsibility are visible.
| Axis | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Relevant production experience | Examples resembling your goal and environment; the provider’s role; what was delivered; how success was assessed; and what the customer retained. |
| Proposed people | Who will lead discovery, implementation, and post-launch work; relevant CKA or CKS credentials; and experience with your distribution, infrastructure, and surrounding stack. |
| Security and lifecycle | How the team handles upgrades, access control, workload isolation, secrets, vulnerability response, backup and recovery, and incident escalation. |
| Operations and support | Service hours, response targets, escalation path, monitoring responsibilities, on-call coverage, scope boundaries, and remote or onsite arrangements. |
| Knowledge transfer and exit | Included documentation, runbooks, training, and handover artifacts, and how your organization can operate or change the platform after the engagement. |
| Scope and commercial clarity | Discovery work, deliverables, assumptions, acceptance criteria, change handling, ongoing fees, and responsibility for each part of the work. |
| References | Customers with comparable production systems who can discuss delivery, problems encountered, and ongoing ownership—not merely a list of logos. |
Questions to resolve before signing
- Who will actually deliver? Meet the technical lead and the people expected to do discovery, implementation, and support. Ask whether named specialists are committed to the engagement or may be substituted.
- What does “done” mean? Put deliverables and acceptance criteria in the proposal. Clarify assumptions, dependencies on your team, and how additional work or changed requirements will be handled.
- Who owns operations? Record who handles monitoring, upgrades, access, incidents, backups, and recovery. Define service hours, response targets, escalation routes, and on-call responsibilities rather than relying on a general promise of support.
- How will your team take over? Agree on documentation, runbooks, training, and handover. Establish which skills and access your staff need to operate and modify the platform after the engagement.
- Can the provider support your constraints? Confirm remote or onsite coverage, geography, staffing, and any data-residency requirements that affect where or how work can be performed.
- Can a reference validate the claim? Ask a comparable customer what the provider delivered, how outcomes were evaluated, what went wrong, and who owns the system now.
Interpret the size of the KCSP program carefully
CNCF’s 2025 annual report says 25 providers were added during 2025 and the program had 230 KCSPs at year end. Those figures describe program size, not a ranking, evidence of quality, or proof that each listed provider serves your region or use case. Treat a directory listing as a way to identify candidates, then apply the same validation process to each. CNCF Annual Report 2025.

Prefer the candidate that can show relevant production work, put the right people on the engagement, define security and lifecycle responsibilities, and leave your team with a clear operating path. Compare proposals by the work and accountability they include, not by day rates alone. No directory status or certification can replace a direct check of references, availability, scope, and the specific team you are being offered.
