Choose a kitchen faucet by starting with the sink, not the finish: confirm the mounting holes, clearances, and basin dimensions, then decide which wand, controls, spray features, and flow rate suit your routine. The right combination can make filling pots, rinsing produce, and cleaning the sink easier while fitting the look of a modern kitchen.

What should you check before buying a kitchen faucet?

Compatibility comes first. A faucet that looks right may not fit the sink deck or leave enough room for its handle and spray wand to move. Before shopping, check:

  • Mounting holes and spacing: Count the holes in the sink or countertop and measure the distance between them. Some faucets include a deck plate that can cover unused holes, but that depends on the specific model.
  • Faucet dimensions: Compare the spout height and reach with the sink and nearby backsplash, window, or shelving. A taller spout can provide more room for cookware, but it needs sufficient overhead clearance.
  • Basin depth and width: Consider where the water stream will land and whether the wand can reach the corners. A deep basin can help contain splashing; a wide basin may call for a wand with useful outward reach.
  • Cabinet and plumbing access: Check the space below the sink for the faucet body, hoses, and any required components. Make sure you can reach the shutoff valves and supply connections for installation and future maintenance.

Use the chosen faucet’s installation instructions to confirm the hole arrangement, required clearances, and plumbing connections before ordering. If you are replacing a faucet, compare its installation requirements with the existing setup rather than assuming the new one will fit.

Pull-down vs. pull-out kitchen faucets: which wand suits your sink?

The main difference is the direction the spray wand extends. Match that movement to the shape of your basin and the space around it.

Wand style How it moves May suit Check before buying
Pull-down The wand pulls downward from a typically taller, high-arc spout. Deeper basins and filling or rinsing items below the spout. Spout height, overhead clearance, basin depth, and whether the hose reaches the areas you need.
Pull-out The wand draws outward toward the user from a generally shorter faucet profile. Wider or shallower sinks, or kitchens where a more compact faucet profile is useful. How far the wand extends and whether the hose can reach across the basin.

These are general design differences, not guarantees of a particular model’s reach or performance. Compare the actual faucet dimensions and hose movement with your sink. KOHLER and Delta describe these wand styles in their respective buying guidance and kitchen faucet guide.

Single-handle or two-handle controls?

A single-handle faucet combines flow and temperature adjustment in one lever. It gives the sink area a streamlined look and lets you make both adjustments with one control. A two-handle faucet has separate hot- and cold-water controls, which may appeal if you prefer adjusting them independently or want a more traditional appearance.

Which spray and activation features are useful?

Feature availability varies by model. A faucet may offer stream and spray settings, a task-specific spray pattern, touch activation, or sensor-based operation; do not assume a feature is included because it appears on another faucet in the same brand’s range.

  • Stream and spray: A selectable spray can be convenient for rinsing produce or washing the basin. Check how the mode is selected and whether the model provides the pattern you want.
  • Specialized spray patterns: Some manufacturers offer modes intended for particular cleaning tasks. For example, Delta says its ShieldSpray technology produces an average of 90% less splatter than a standard spray. That is a manufacturer claim for that technology, not an independent test or a general result for kitchen faucets.
  • Touch or sensor activation: These controls are available on some models, not all. If considering one, verify how activation works and what installation or power requirements the model specifies.
  • Wand docking: Some faucets use a mechanism to help return the wand to its spout. Delta describes magnet-assisted docking on particular product lines; check the selected model’s specifications rather than treating it as a standard feature.

KOHLER lists stream, Sweep spray, and Boost modes on many of its faucets, but not all. Those descriptions are manufacturer feature information; compare the specific model’s controls and instructions before deciding whether a mode suits your tasks.

How to choose a finish and faucet shape

Traditional, transitional, and contemporary profiles can each work in a modern kitchen, depending on the cabinet hardware, sink, and surrounding fixtures. Choose a finish that coordinates with those elements, or intentionally mix finishes to create contrast. Because finish names and appearance differ by manufacturer, compare the actual product finish and care instructions rather than relying on a label alone.

Shape also affects more than appearance. A high-arc spout can leave room for large pots and cookware, as KOHLER notes in its buying guidance, while a shorter profile may better suit a compact area or a shallow sink. Check the faucet’s height and reach against your own counter and basin dimensions.

What flow rate should you look for?

For the United States, the EPA’s July 2023 WaterSense Labeled Homes technical sheet reports a federal maximum kitchen-faucet flow rate of 2.2 gallons per minute at 60 psi. It says models rated at 1.5 to 1.8 gallons per minute are available for greater efficiency or to meet local requirements. Some states and municipalities have stricter limits, so verify current rules where you live and check the selected model’s rated flow.

The same EPA sheet states, “WaterSense does not have a specification that applies to kitchen faucets.” Do not treat a kitchen faucet as WaterSense-labeled on that basis. The EPA directs readers to faucets certified to ASME A112.18.1/CSA B125.1 Plumbing Supply Fittings. The sheet also notes that temporary boost behavior may be permitted in some cases, so consult local requirements and the faucet’s specifications if a model includes a boost mode. These figures and standards guidance are U.S.-specific; readers elsewhere should check their jurisdiction’s requirements.

A practical way to narrow your choices

  1. Record the sink setup. Note mounting-hole count and spacing, basin depth and width, and available clearance above and below the counter.
  2. Choose the wand movement. Compare pull-down downward reach with pull-out outward reach based on your basin shape and routine tasks.
  3. Pick the controls. Decide whether you prefer one lever for flow and temperature or separate hot and cold handles.
  4. Select only useful features. Check the exact model for spray modes, touch or sensor activation, and wand docking; do not infer them from a product family or brand.
  5. Confirm flow and installation compatibility. Check the model’s rated gpm, local rules, mounting requirements, dimensions, and plumbing instructions.
  6. Choose the appearance. Once the fit and functions work, compare the faucet profile and finish with the rest of the kitchen.

For more model-specific guidance, consult the manufacturer’s KOHLER kitchen faucet buying guide, KOHLER kitchen faucet catalog, and Delta kitchen faucet buying guide. Their feature descriptions are manufacturer information; model availability and specifications can vary.
