Choose a Huawei phone only after checking every essential app on the exact handset and regional software version you intend to buy. New Huawei devices generally ship without Google Mobile Services (GMS), and Huawei’s UK AppGallery FAQ says, “Currently it’s not possible to download Google apps on new Huawei devices.” AppGallery, Huawei Mobile Services (HMS), browser versions and app-transfer tools can cover many needs, but none guarantees that a GMS-dependent app will provide all of its functions.
What the Google-app limitation actually means
The issue is not simply whether an Android application can be installed. Huawei phones use Android Open Source Project (AOSP)-based software together with Huawei Mobile Services rather than the Google Mobile Services package found on most Android phones. Huawei says HMS Core can support Android applications on AOSP devices, while warning that “certain Android apps require support from GMS Core and may not be able to run on HMS Core.”
That distinction affects installation, sign-in, background notifications, maps, payments, location, media playback and other functions. An application may appear in a search result, transfer successfully from an old phone or open in a browser while still lacking a feature that depends on Google services. Treat an installation as the beginning of compatibility checking, not proof that the app is fully supported.

The UK FAQ describes the general situation for new Huawei devices, but it does not establish the configuration of every handset sold in every country. A model’s market, firmware channel, update history and seller support therefore matter as much as its name.

Start with an app-and-service inventory
Before comparing cameras, storage or prices, write down what you use on your current phone. Separate essential services from conveniences. This prevents a familiar Android label from hiding a deal-breaking dependency.
Mark the apps you cannot replace
- Banking, brokerage, insurance and government-identification apps.
- Work tools, corporate single sign-on, virtual private network clients and collaboration software.
- Two-factor authentication, password managers and security-key companion apps.
- Contactless payment, transit-ticketing, loyalty and digital-wallet services.
- Navigation, ride-hailing, delivery and location-sharing services.
- Streaming, casting, smart-home and automotive companion apps.
- Messaging and social apps whose notifications you must receive promptly.
Record the functions you actually need
For each essential app, note whether you need push alerts, biometric login, background synchronization, file uploads, location tracking, in-app purchases, offline downloads, casting or access to a hardware accessory. A browser page may handle reading email but not background alerts; a transferred app may open but fail at sign-in; a streaming app may play video but omit downloads or casting. Compatibility has to be judged at the feature level.
Identify account and regional dependencies
Write down the country associated with each account, the phone number used for verification and any employer or school management requirements. Also record whether your current phone uses a Google account for backups, contacts, calendars, photos or passwords. These details determine how much migration work is required even when an individual app has a usable Huawei or web alternative.

Do not rely on a general statement such as “Android apps work.” Check the precise model number, regional firmware and intended country of use. Huawei’s own guidance makes clear that some applications require GMS, while the available sources do not provide a model-by-model compatibility list.
- Get the complete model and software information. Ask the seller for the model designation, regional variant, operating-system build and update channel. Confirm whether the phone is new, refurbished or imported.
- Check the developer’s official support information. Look for statements about required Google services, supported Android versions, device certification, push notifications and regional availability. Use the app publisher’s own website or support team when the requirement is unclear.
- Test the critical workflow, not just installation. Verify sign-in, account recovery, notifications, location, payments, uploads, downloads and any accessory connection. If a bank or employer controls the app, ask that organization whether the exact Huawei model is supported.
- Check the browser experience separately. Open the service’s official web version in Huawei Browser and test the actions you need. Confirm whether alerts, offline use, camera access, file handling or two-factor prompts are available.
- Ask about returns and warranty in writing. App behavior can vary by country and firmware. A return window and local warranty reduce the risk of discovering a critical incompatibility after purchase.
If a seller cannot provide the regional software details or permit a practical compatibility check, treat that uncertainty as a purchase risk rather than assuming the phone will behave like another Android handset.
Understand the Huawei alternatives
AppGallery
AppGallery is Huawei’s official app-distribution platform and is preinstalled on Huawei smartphones and tablets. It is the first place to check for an application, but listing status does not prove that every Google-backed function is present. Review the publisher, requested permissions, update history and any regional restrictions before installing.
Huawei’s UK FAQ claims that AppGallery has 400 million monthly active users and is the world’s third-largest app marketplace. Huawei does not provide a publication year or methodology on that FAQ page, so these figures should be understood as Huawei’s claims rather than independently verified measurements.

HMS Core
HMS Core supplies Huawei services and developer capabilities, including identity, payments, notifications, location and maps. Huawei also identifies AppGallery, Cloud, Wallet and Health as parts of its ecosystem. An app built to use those services can provide a good experience, but HMS is not a drop-in guarantee for software written specifically around GMS Core.
Phone Clone
Huawei’s AppGallery guidance describes Phone Clone as a way to transfer applications and personal content from an old phone. Use it for contacts, photos and other migration tasks, but do not treat a successful transfer as a compatibility certificate. A copied application can still fail when it calls a missing Google API, requests Google sign-in or expects Google push infrastructure.
Official downloads from an app website
Huawei says selected applications can be downloaded from their official websites using Huawei Browser. This route can be useful when an application is not listed in AppGallery, but it does not remove the application’s underlying service requirements. Download only from the publisher’s genuine domain, check the version and permissions, and avoid unofficial mirrors.
Browser versions
A carrier FAQ about Huawei Mobile Services notes that Google-operated websites can be opened in Huawei Browser and suggests web versions for services such as Gmail or YouTube. A web app may be sufficient for occasional reading or playback, but it may not replace native notifications, offline files, casting, background synchronization, biometric authentication or hardware integration.
What to check by app category
Different categories fail in different ways, so test the behavior that matters rather than only opening the app.

Use the strictest outcome for any service that affects money, employment, identity, safety or access to your accounts. A convenient workaround is not equivalent to reliable support when a missed notification or failed authentication has serious consequences.
Ask the seller and app publisher these questions
- What is the exact model number and regional software version?
- Was the phone originally sold for this country, and who provides the warranty?
- What is the operating-system build and update channel?
- Can I test my banking, work, authentication and payment apps before the return period expires?
- Does the app publisher list this model or HMS as supported?
- Which functions, if any, require Google Mobile Services?
- Will push notifications, location services and background synchronization work while the phone is locked?
- Can the browser version handle my required uploads, downloads, two-factor prompts and offline tasks?
Ask for written answers when possible. A sales description that says “Android” or “apps available” is not a commitment that GMS-dependent functions will work.

Compare Huawei with another phone using practical criteria

The available evidence does not establish current prices, stock or hardware specifications for a particular Huawei model. Obtain those details from an authorized local seller and compare them only after the software checklist passes.

There is no reliable universal price comparison because handset prices, stock and regional configurations change. Get a current quote for the precise model, then account for any paid alternative service, replacement app or extra device you would need if a critical Google-dependent function is missing. A cheaper handset is not cheaper if it forces you to keep another phone for banking, authentication or work.
Also compare the value of the included ecosystem: AppGallery, Cloud, Wallet and Health may meet some needs, but moving accounts and backups can require time and new subscriptions. Confirm cancellation, transfer and recovery rules for services tied to your existing Google account before committing.
Plan the switch without losing access
Keep the old phone operational
Do not erase or trade in your existing phone during setup. Keep it available for authentication codes, account recovery, mobile banking and any service that has not yet been validated. Maintain a backup of contacts, photos, documents and authenticator data through methods supported by each service.
Move data in stages
- Transfer contacts, calendars, photos and documents with Phone Clone or the service’s own export tool.
- Install available applications through AppGallery or the publisher’s official website.
- Sign in to one critical service at a time and test all required functions.
- Enable notifications, location permissions, battery-background access and backup options where the app supports them.
- Repeat the test away from Wi-Fi to confirm mobile-data behavior and account verification.
Recheck security and recovery
Confirm that password recovery, two-factor authentication, device approval and remote sign-out work on the Huawei phone. If an organization requires device certification or managed profiles, obtain approval before relying on the handset for work.
Why there is no universal workaround
Huawei documents several access routes—AppGallery, Phone Clone, selected official website downloads and browser access—but presents them as options, not as a guarantee that every Google-dependent app will function. Installing an unofficial package or changing system software can add security, update and support risks while still failing to supply the Google APIs the app expects. For a mission-critical service, an approved alternative or a different handset is safer than an uncertain workaround.

Using a transferred app as proof
Phone Clone can move an app and its data, but it cannot replace a service that the app expects from Google. Perform a live workflow test after transfer.
Confusing a website with a complete app replacement
Browser access may omit notifications, offline mode, casting, background updates or hardware integration. Decide explicitly which omissions you can accept.

Ignoring regional variants
An imported handset may have different firmware, update timing, warranty terms or preinstalled services. Confirm the local configuration before paying.
Relying on unofficial installation methods
Unverified installation packages can introduce security and update risks and still may not provide the Google services an app needs. Prefer AppGallery or the publisher’s official download channel.
Trusting a marketplace ranking as a compatibility test
Huawei’s UK FAQ describes AppGallery as having 400 million monthly active users and being the world’s third-largest app marketplace, but those are Huawei’s claims and the page shows no publication date or methodology. Marketplace size does not tell you whether your bank, employer or transit app works on your device.

A Huawei phone can make sense if your essential services are available through AppGallery, HMS-compatible versions or reliable browser interfaces; you are comfortable managing a non-Google account and backup setup; and local warranty and updates are clear. It is a poor fit when you depend on several GMS-only apps, need guaranteed push notifications or contactless payments, use employer software that requires certified Google services, or cannot test the phone before the return period ends.

A final pre-purchase checklist
- Exact model number and regional software variant recorded.
- Local warranty, return period and update support confirmed.
- Every essential app classified as native, partial, browser-based, transferable-but-unverified or unavailable.
- Banking, work, authentication, payment, navigation and streaming workflows tested or confirmed by the publisher.
- Push notifications, location, sign-in, payments, uploads, downloads and offline requirements checked.
- Data-transfer and account-recovery plans prepared while the old phone remains active.
- Current local price and any replacement-service cost compared with a phone that includes GMS.
- No assumption that AppGallery listing, Phone Clone transfer or browser access guarantees full GMS-equivalent behavior.
If any mission-critical item remains unknown, postpone the purchase or select a phone whose software support is documented for your region. That single rule prevents most expensive surprises.

Treat unofficial installation as a risk. It may create security and update problems and still cannot guarantee the Google APIs an app needs. Prefer AppGallery, the publisher’s official website or a browser alternative.
When should I choose a different phone instead?
Choose another handset if a banking, work, identity, payment, safety or authentication service remains unverified; if you require guaranteed push notifications or contactless payments; or if the seller will not provide a workable return option.
