The best way to choose a horror game is to separate four things that ratings often combine: sudden jump scares, sustained dread, graphic gore, and intense or realistic violence. Decide which of those matters most to you, check the age category and descriptors for your region, read the complete official rating summary, and verify the exact platform and edition. A game rated for blood and intense violence may be action-focused rather than relentlessly frightening, while another may create sustained tension with less graphic imagery.
Start by identifying the kind of horror you want
“Scary” is not one measurable property. Your reaction depends on whether a game surprises you, keeps you under pressure, shows graphic injury, or presents violence in a realistic way. Write down your limits before looking at ratings; otherwise a familiar label can conceal the feature you actually want to avoid.

Sudden scares and jump scares
Jump scares use an abrupt visual, sound, or threat reveal to startle you. They are short, high-impact events, so a game can contain several without creating a constant atmosphere of fear. Official age-rating summaries usually identify violence, gore, language, or themes rather than counting every surprise. The cited summaries for Until Dawn and Dead Space do not establish how often either game uses jump scares. Treat frequency claims from a storefront or rating entry as unconfirmed unless the title-specific source actually describes them.

Sustained horror keeps you uneasy through an ongoing threat, limited safety, sound design, isolation, or disturbing images. It may feel exhausting even when nothing suddenly appears. The UK Games Rating Authority’s 2023 guidance distinguishes moderate horror sequences or disturbing images from intense, sustained horror. That distinction is useful for thinking about atmosphere, but it is a UK classification framework, not a universal fear scale and not a prediction of your personal reaction.

Graphic gore and injury detail
Gore concerns what the game shows: blood, wounds, mutilation, dismemberment, or other explicit injury detail. A descriptor such as “Blood and Gore” tells you that this content contributed to a rating, but it does not tell you how frequently it appears, whether it is optional, or how realistic it looks. Read the rating summary for concrete examples instead of treating the descriptor as a complete inventory.
Violence intensity and realism
“Intense Violence” addresses the force, context, or detail of violent acts. A combat-heavy game may contain frequent violent encounters without using the same kind of suspense as a stealth or exploration game. Conversely, a brief scene can be more disturbing than routine combat because of its framing or realism. Separate the amount of fighting from the emotional intensity of the presentation.
Why an age rating cannot tell you how frightening a game will feel
Age categories and content descriptors serve different purposes. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) says its categories suggest age appropriateness, while descriptors flag elements that may have triggered the assigned category or may interest or concern consumers. A descriptor is not a subjective fear score and is not a complete content list.
The ESRB Ratings Guide states: “Content Descriptors are applied relative to the Rating Category assigned and are not intended to be a complete listing of content.” The wording matters. “Blood and Gore” confirms that blood or graphic injury was relevant to the rating, but it does not promise a particular quantity. “Intense Violence” signals a rating-relevant level of violent content, but it does not rank the game against every other horror title.

Use the descriptor as a filter, then open the full official rating summary. The summary can identify the setting, the kinds of attacks or injuries depicted, and whether sexual themes or strong language are also present. Check the current store listing as well, because a new edition, remake, port, or regional release can have a different entry.
Read the rating system for your region and release
Do not transfer an age threshold or descriptor meaning from one system to another without checking the local listing. The International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) definitions reproduce several regional systems, while ESRB explains that physical and digital games follow different rating processes.
ESRB listings and the physical-versus-digital distinction
For physical games, ESRB says submissions are reviewed by at least three trained raters. Digital games are rated through a process developed by IARC. That process difference does not make one format safer or scarier; it tells you why a boxed copy and a digital storefront may present ratings differently. Always inspect the listing attached to the version you intend to play.

The UK Games Rating Authority’s 2023 guidance describes F2 as moderate horror sequences or disturbing images, including examples of jump scares. It says detailed gore is not allowed at F2 and that intense, sustained horror or graphic gore may fit F3. Use those terms to distinguish moderate scares from more extreme material in UK classifications. Do not turn F2 or F3 into a worldwide intensity scale: other systems use different categories, thresholds, and descriptor wording.

Check the edition and platform
A rating applies to a particular release. Verify the platform, publisher listing, and edition name before buying or downloading. Content can differ between a remake and an original, a complete edition and a base release, or a console and PC version. If the store page does not clearly identify the rating summary, search the official rating database for the exact release rather than relying on a user-created tag.
A practical method for comparing horror games
Use this sequence whenever you are choosing between titles:
- Set your priority. Decide whether you are avoiding jump scares, graphic gore, realistic violence, or prolonged dread. You can be comfortable with one dimension and sensitive to another.
- Check the regional age category. Use the rating system shown for your country and the platform where you will play. Record the category and every descriptor instead of remembering only the age number.
- Open the complete official summary. Look for concrete descriptions of blood, injury detail, combat, disturbing imagery, sexual themes, and language. A descriptor alone is not a full warning.
- Identify the game’s structure. Determine whether the official description presents it as a choice-driven survival-horror adventure, a combat-focused action-horror game, or another format. Structure changes how often you are managing threats and how much agency you have.
- Verify platform and edition. Match the rating entry to the exact console, PC release, remake, or port you are considering.
- Investigate scare frequency separately. If jump-scare frequency is your deciding factor, use a current, spoiler-light, title-specific source that actually discusses frequency. The official rating summary generally will not quantify it.
- Make a tolerance decision. Choose the game whose documented content fits your boundary, not the one with the lowest or highest age number.
Use a four-axis comparison instead of one “scariness” label
The following checklist keeps unlike experiences separate. Fill it from the official summary and a clearly identified, spoiler-light game description when necessary.
| Axis | Question to ask | What an official rating can establish | What it usually cannot establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sudden scares | Are threats introduced as abrupt appearances or loud surprises? | Usually not stated as a count; check title-specific material. | The exact number, timing, or predictability of jump scares. |
| Sustained dread | Does the game maintain an ongoing threat or disturbing atmosphere? | Regional guidance may distinguish moderate from intense, sustained horror. | How tense you personally will feel during exploration or waiting. |
| Gore and injury detail | How explicit are blood, wounds, mutilation, or dismemberment? | Descriptors such as Blood and Gore plus examples in the rating summary. | The percentage of play time containing gore or your personal tolerance. |
| Violence style | Is violence frequent combat, a few scripted scenes, or realistic depiction? | Descriptors such as Intense Violence and summary examples. | Whether combat feels frightening, empowering, repetitive, or emotionally disturbing. |
| Game structure | Are you making choices, exploring, hiding, or fighting continuously? | The official game description may identify the broad genre and format. | A universal ranking of which game is scarier. |
What the official examples show
Two games demonstrate why shared descriptors do not mean identical experiences.

Until Dawn
The ESRB lists Until Dawn for Windows PC and PlayStation 5 as Mature 17+, with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes, and Strong Language. Its summary describes a choice-driven survival-horror adventure and gives examples of intense violence and gore. That makes it a useful reference for a narrative game in which player decisions shape the adventure while explicit violence remains part of the rating.
The entry does not establish how frequently the game uses jump scares, nor does it prove that it will feel scarier than another Mature-rated title. If sudden surprises are your primary concern, you need separate, current information about the game’s scare patterns.
Dead Space
The ESRB lists Dead Space for Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series as Mature 17+, with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, and Strong Language. The summary describes sci-fi action horror with frenetic combat and possible dismemberment. This points to an action-oriented experience in which graphic violence is a central consideration.
Again, the rating entry is not a jump-scare counter and does not provide a subjective fear ranking. Its value is in documenting the content dimensions that contributed to the Mature rating.
Best Value
- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
| Game | Platforms listed by ESRB | Category | Descriptors | Officially described format | Jump-scare frequency in cited summary |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Until Dawn | Windows PC; PlayStation 5 | Mature 17+ | Blood and Gore; Intense Violence; Sexual Themes; Strong Language | Choice-driven survival-horror adventure | Not stated |
| Dead Space | Windows PC; PlayStation 5; Xbox Series | Mature 17+ | Blood and Gore; Intense Violence; Strong Language | Sci-fi action horror with frenetic combat | Not stated |
The comparison is about documented content and structure, not a verdict on which title is more frightening. Both carry Blood and Gore and Intense Violence, yet one is presented as choice-driven survival horror and the other as combat-focused sci-fi horror.

If you dislike jump scares but can handle gore
Do not assume a gore descriptor predicts surprise frequency. Confirm jump-scare patterns through a spoiler-light source that discusses them directly. Then read the rating summary to judge whether the injury detail is acceptable. A game can have little documented information about sudden scares while still containing explicit gore.
If you dislike gore but enjoy tense atmosphere
Look for the complete summary’s examples of blood, wounds, dismemberment, and mutilation. The absence of a Blood and Gore descriptor is useful, but it is not a promise that every disturbing image is absent; descriptors are not complete listings. Regional guidance can help you distinguish moderate disturbing imagery from graphic gore, especially in UK classifications.
If realistic violence is your boundary
Pay close attention to Intense Violence and the summary’s descriptions of attacks, injury detail, and context. A fantasy or science-fiction setting does not automatically make violence feel less realistic to you. Consider whether the structure requires repeated combat, because frequency and presentation affect the experience even when the descriptor is the same.
If prolonged dread is what you want
Search for descriptions of sustained threat and atmosphere rather than relying on an age category. The GRA’s distinction between moderate sequences and intense, sustained horror gives you useful vocabulary, but it does not predict your individual fear response. A title-specific description should explain whether tension is continuous or concentrated in set pieces.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Reading only the age number. Correction: record the descriptors and open the full summary.
- Treating descriptors as a complete warning. Correction: remember that ESRB explicitly says descriptors are not a complete listing.
- Assuming shared descriptors mean shared gameplay. Correction: compare structure, such as choice-driven survival horror versus frenetic action horror.
- Using another region’s thresholds. Correction: check the rating system attached to your country and release.
- Expecting ratings to count jump scares. Correction: find current, title-specific information when surprise frequency matters.
- Ranking games by “scariness” from the rating alone. Correction: treat ratings as content information, not a universal fear score.
- Ignoring the exact edition. Correction: verify the platform, remake or original, and current storefront entry.
A quick decision worksheet
Before selecting a game, answer these questions:
- Which content would make me stop playing: sudden scares, sustained dread, graphic gore, intense violence, sexual themes, or strong language?
- What category and descriptors appear on the local store page?
- What concrete examples appear in the official rating summary?
- Does the game’s structure emphasize choices and exploration or frequent combat?
- Is the listing for my exact platform and edition?
- Do I have reliable, spoiler-light information about jump-scare frequency if that is important to me?
If any answer is missing, treat it as unknown rather than assuming the most comfortable interpretation. That approach prevents an age label or familiar franchise name from standing in for the information you actually need.
Bottom line
Choose a horror game by content dimension, not by a single scariness label. Use the region-specific category and descriptors as a first filter, read the complete official summary for gore and violence detail, compare the game’s structure, and seek separate title-specific information about jump scares and sustained dread. Until Dawn and Dead Space show why two Mature-rated games with overlapping descriptors can still offer very different kinds of horror; the available rating summaries do not establish which one will frighten you more.
