The right home battery is the one that matches your goal, not the one with the biggest advertised kilowatt-hour number. Start by deciding whether you want to shift daytime solar into evening use, keep selected circuits running during an outage, or back up most of the house. Then size both the stored energy (kWh) and the instantaneous output (kW), check inverter and panel compatibility, and compare a written local design.

There is no reliable battery size that can be chosen from house square footage alone. Your loads, outage priorities, solar array, electrical equipment, utility rates and export rules determine the design.

What a home battery does

A residential battery stores electricity so it can be used later. Solar production usually falls in the evening, while household demand often rises. Storage shifts some of the energy generated during the day to a later period. The U.S. Department of Energy describes the purpose this way: “Storage allows the flexible use of energy at different times from when it was generated.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A battery can also provide backup power when the grid fails, but only if the system is designed to operate during an outage. A solar array that normally shuts down when the grid is unavailable is not, by itself, an outage-power system. Backup equipment, controls and a defined set of circuits are part of the design.

Separate the three reasons to buy storage

  • Solar self-consumption: Store surplus midday generation and use it later instead of exporting it.
  • Bill management: Charge when electricity is cheaper and discharge when a time-of-use price or a demand charge is higher. The value depends on your tariff.
  • Resilience: Keep chosen loads operating during a grid outage. This is a reliability benefit and should be valued separately from bill savings.

These goals can point to different system designs. A battery sized for evening energy shifting may not provide enough output for a well pump or other motor starting at the same time as a refrigerator. Conversely, a large backup system may cost more than the bill savings it can produce.

The specifications that determine whether a battery fits

Specification What it means What to ask for
Energy capacity (kWh) The amount of energy the battery can store. Usable AC energy available to your backed-up loads, not only the nameplate capacity.
Continuous power (kW) The output it can sustain while loads are running. The continuous rating in the proposed configuration and at the expected operating temperature.
Peak or surge power (kW) The short-duration output available for starting or briefly running demanding equipment. Peak value, duration and which loads the installer has included in the calculation.
Conversion efficiency Some energy is lost while charging, storing and converting electricity for household use. The manufacturer’s documented efficiency for the complete system and operating mode; storage is not 100% efficient.
Operating limits Temperature, state-of-charge and other conditions can limit charging or discharge. Published limits and how the controls respond when a limit is reached.
Warranty Coverage may address time, energy throughput, retained capacity or other conditions. The current warranty document, exclusions and who performs service.
Integration equipment Inverters, transfer controls, a backup gateway or a critical-loads panel may be needed. Every additional component and the labor required to install it.

Energy and power are different dimensions. A battery can have enough kWh for an overnight period yet lack the kW needed to start a motor. It can also have ample kW for a brief surge but run out of usable energy quickly. Request both ratings under the exact system configuration proposed for your home.

Size the battery in a practical sequence

1. Write down the job the battery must perform

State the objective in one sentence: for example, “shift solar into the evening,” “keep refrigeration, internet and lighting on,” or “support nearly all household circuits.” If you have more than one objective, rank them. A resilience requirement usually changes the design more than an energy-shifting requirement because the system must continue operating when the grid and, at times, the solar array are unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Define the loads that matter

Make two lists for an outage:

  • Essential loads: refrigeration, medical equipment, communications, lighting, garage or security systems and other equipment that must remain on.
  • Optional or high-demand loads: electric water heating, cooking equipment, clothes dryers, air conditioning, pumps, workshops and vehicle charging.

Identify each load’s running watts, starting or surge requirement, and the number of hours you want it to operate. Use the equipment nameplate, manufacturer documentation or an electrician’s measurement rather than guessing from the appliance category. Motors and compressors can briefly require more power when they start.

3. Convert the list into energy

For each appliance, multiply watts by the hours of operation and divide by 1,000:

energy (kWh) = watts × hours ÷ 1,000

As an illustration, a hypothetical 300-watt load running for eight hours would require 2.4 kWh before conversion losses. Add the energy for all loads that may operate during the same outage period. Do not treat this arithmetic as a promised battery size: actual duty cycles, inverter losses, reserve settings and weather affect the result.

4. Check simultaneous power and surge power

Add the running power of loads that may operate at once and compare it with the battery inverter’s continuous output. Then check the largest starting combinations against the peak rating and the stated surge duration. Ask the installer to show this calculation in writing. A design that covers the refrigerator and lights individually may still trip when a pump starts while those loads are running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Account for usable energy and losses

The headline kWh figure is not the same as the AC energy delivered to household circuits. Energy is lost during conversion and retrieval, and the controls may reserve part of the battery to protect operation or leave room for solar charging. Ask for the usable energy at the point of connection to your loads, the assumed reserve, and the conditions used to state that number.

6. Decide how the battery will recharge

For evening shifting, the system may charge from excess solar and discharge on a schedule. During a prolonged outage, the installer should explain whether the solar array can recharge the battery, which equipment remains energized, and how the controls prevent unsafe islanding. Ask what happens on a cloudy day, after the battery reaches its reserve, and when solar production is insufficient to restart charging.

7. Have the design modeled for your site

Solar-paired storage depends on array size, orientation, local weather, household demand, tariff rules and electrical configuration. The Department of Energy notes that estimating a suitable system can be complex and points to analysis tools such as NREL REopt. A site-specific model is more useful than a rule based on floor area or a generic “days of backup” claim.

Choose the backup scope before choosing hardware

Critical-loads backup

A critical-loads design places selected circuits on a backed-up panel or equivalent control equipment. It can reduce the required kW and kWh because large discretionary loads are excluded. Confirm exactly which breakers are included, whether they can be changed later, and how the transfer occurs when the grid fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Broader or whole-home backup

Backing up most circuits requires enough inverter output for the loads that can run together, including large starting loads. It may require additional electrical work, load management or more than one battery. “Whole-home” should be treated as a design description, not a guarantee that every appliance can run indefinitely.

Outage transition and depletion behavior

Ask how quickly the system disconnects from the grid, whether sensitive equipment experiences an interruption, and which devices control the transition. Get a plain-language explanation of what happens when the battery reaches its minimum reserve: Do selected circuits turn off, does the system wait for solar, or does an auxiliary source take over? The answer should appear in the written proposal.

Confirm solar, inverter and panel compatibility

Residential storage is an integrated electrical system. Compatibility is not established by matching a battery’s kWh number to your solar array. The installer must evaluate the existing solar inverter, battery inverter, service equipment, panel capacity, wiring, disconnects, grounding and any required backup gateway or critical-loads panel.

Ask whether the proposed battery is AC-coupled or DC-coupled to the solar equipment, which conversion steps occur during charging and discharging, and whether the existing inverter can remain. The appropriate architecture depends on the equipment already installed and on whether the project is a new solar installation or a retrofit.

Require a single-line diagram or equivalent system drawing showing the utility connection, solar inverter, battery, transfer controls and backed-up circuits. The proposal should identify permits, utility approvals, panel changes, communications requirements and commissioning tests. Do not rely on a verbal statement that “it should work.”

Compare the economics in your location

Financial value depends on the rules and prices where you live. Check the utility’s treatment of exported solar: some arrangements provide one-to-one net-metering compensation, while others credit exports at a different rate. Also determine whether your tariff uses time-of-use prices or demand charges. A battery may be useful for reducing expensive imports even when export credits are generous, or it may have little bill value when rate differences are small.

Question Why it changes the calculation Evidence to request
How are solar exports credited? The value of sending excess generation to the grid determines how much a battery can improve self-consumption. Current utility tariff or net-metering terms for your service address.
Are prices time-based? Charging and discharging at different times can create a spread, subject to system losses and control limits. The applicable time-of-use schedule and the assumptions in the savings model.
Are demand charges applied? A short high-power interval may affect a commercial or certain residential bill differently from total kWh use. Tariff language and the modeled reduction in peak demand.
What is the resilience value? Keeping essential equipment operating has a benefit even when bill savings do not recover the purchase cost. Your own priority list and the expected outage behavior, rather than a generic payback promise.

Ask the installer to show the assumptions behind any savings estimate: solar production, household consumption, export credit, rate escalation, battery degradation, reserve settings, control strategy and operating costs. Compare the estimate with and without storage. A payback period, installed price or efficiency percentage should not be accepted as universal; those figures vary by product, location and design.

Federal tax-credit status for a 2026 installation

The Internal Revenue Service’s current Residential Clean Energy Credit page, accessed October 13, 2026, states that the credit applies to qualified property installed from 2022 through December 31, 2025, and is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Therefore, an installation placed in service in 2026 should not be priced on the assumption that this residential federal credit remains available.

Questions to take to an installer

  1. What exact loads are backed up, and can I see them on a circuit diagram?
  2. What are the battery’s usable kWh, continuous kW and peak kW in this configuration?
  3. Which appliance starting loads did you include, and what happens if two start together?
  4. How much energy is reserved, and how much AC energy should reach my loads?
  5. Can my existing solar inverter and electrical panel remain? If not, what is replaced?
  6. What equipment is required for safe islanding and automatic transfer?
  7. During an outage, can the solar array recharge the battery? Under what conditions?
  8. What happens when the battery reaches its reserve or is fully depleted?
  9. Which utility approvals, permits and inspections are included?
  10. What assumptions produce the bill-savings estimate, and which tariff document supports them?
  11. What does the warranty cover, who provides service, and what conditions could reduce coverage?
  12. What maintenance, monitoring, software connection or recurring charges should I expect?

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying by kWh alone

A high energy rating does not prove that the inverter can run your selected loads. Compare usable kWh with continuous and peak kW, then verify the simultaneous-load calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming solar always works during an outage

Grid-connected solar systems commonly require controls that isolate the home from the grid before supplying backup loads. Confirm the islanding equipment and the solar-recharge sequence in the design.

Using square footage as a sizing rule

Two homes with the same floor area can have very different heating, cooling, cooking, medical and pumping loads. Size from measured or documented loads and desired run times.

Counting nameplate energy as delivered energy

Conversion losses and reserve settings reduce the energy available at household circuits. Request the usable AC figure under the intended configuration.

Comparing savings without comparing tariffs

Export credits, time-of-use periods and demand charges differ by utility. Use the rate that applies to your meter and have the installer document the calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the end of an outage

A proposal that says “backup” but does not explain reserve settings, solar recharge and depletion leaves a critical operating question unanswered. Get the sequence in writing before signing.

Relying on outdated incentives

The residential federal credit described above is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Verify current programs for the year and location of your project.

A decision framework

  • Choose storage primarily for resilience when keeping defined circuits operating has clear value to your household and you accept that the system may not pay for itself through bill savings.
  • Choose storage primarily for bill management only after confirming export compensation, time-of-use periods or demand charges and reviewing a site-specific model.
  • Delay the purchase if the installer cannot state usable energy, continuous and peak output, backed-up circuits, outage behavior, compatibility and total installed scope in writing.
  • Request another design when the proposed system meets energy duration but fails the starting-power requirement, or meets output but leaves too little usable energy for the intended outage period.

Make the decision from the written design

A sound choice connects one clear objective to documented loads, usable energy, inverter output, compatible electrical equipment and a local economic model. Have a qualified installer verify the solar and panel integration, show which circuits remain energized, explain recharge and depletion behavior, and itemize the full installation. Once those facts are comparable, the battery that fits your priorities—not the one with the largest headline number—is the appropriate choice.
