Choose a hardware wallet that supports the assets and networks you actually use, lets you review important transaction details on the device itself, and has a recovery process you can carry out safely. Then check the vendor’s current firmware and security guidance. No device makes self-custody risk-free: you remain responsible for protecting the recovery phrase and for deciding what transactions and approvals to sign.
What a hardware wallet protects—and what it does not
A hardware wallet is a signing device: it keeps or uses the private keys needed to authorize transactions without exposing them to an ordinary online computer or phone in the same way a software-only wallet can. Cryptocurrency is recorded on its network, not stored inside the device. The device helps control access to the keys; it does not insure the funds or prevent every kind of theft.
The device’s screen and confirmation flow are important because malware or a deceptive website on your computer or phone could show you misleading information. Check the transaction on the wallet before approving it, and do not approve anything you do not understand. A device that communicates through an air gap still needs a trustworthy way to review what it is signing; avoiding a direct connection alone does not make a transaction safe.

- It cannot: make a malicious transaction legitimate, stop you from approving a harmful contract or transfer, protect a recovery phrase you disclose, or guarantee recovery if your backup is lost or unusable.
How to compare wallets for your own use
There is no universal best wallet. Use the criteria below to narrow the field for your assets, habits, and tolerance for setup complexity. Manufacturer comparison pages can help confirm specifications, but they are not independent product tests.

1. Confirm every asset and network you need
Make a list of the specific coins, tokens, and networks you use—not just the asset names. Confirm that the current device model supports each one, and check which companion app or third-party wallet integration is required. Support can vary by asset, network, model, and software. Do this before buying; a wallet that handles one asset you own may not handle another network or token you need.
2. Check what you can verify on the device
Look at the device’s display and transaction-confirmation steps for the activity you perform. You should be able to inspect the details that matter—such as the recipient and amount for a transfer—on the signing device before approving. If you use more complex transactions, check whether the device presents enough information for you to understand the action rather than relying only on the computer or phone screen.

3. Understand the recovery method before storing a balance
Find out what backup material the wallet creates, how it restores access, and which compatible wallets or devices can use that backup. Recovery is not an optional extra: loss or damage to a device can leave you dependent on the backup. Before relying on a wallet for a meaningful balance, make sure you can follow its official recovery process and that your backup is readable and securely kept.
4. Assess setup and everyday usability
Choose a setup and update process you can follow accurately. Check whether the wallet requires a companion app, a particular connection method, or another device, and whether that fits your routine. A feature-rich setup is not automatically safer if it adds steps you are likely to misunderstand or skip.

5. Review the vendor’s maintenance and security guidance
Check how the vendor handles firmware authenticity and updates, whether it publishes security advisories, and whether its instructions explain what affected users should do. Do not rely on an old reputation or a model name alone: firmware version and hardware model can change the applicable guidance.
6. Match the operating model to your needs
Decide whether you want a multi-asset wallet or a Bitcoin-focused one, and whether advanced features are useful for your actual activity. Extra capabilities may add setup and operational complexity. Prefer the least complicated device that supports your assets and gives you enough information to review the transactions you make.

How to protect the recovery phrase
The recovery phrase is the backup that can restore wallet access after a device is lost or destroyed. Treat it as highly sensitive: someone who obtains it may be able to access the wallet. Ledger and Trezor both warn users not to share wallet recovery material; Ledger also says not to store a copy online and advises generating the phrase yourself rather than using a preconfigured device.

- Record the words accurately and keep the backup private and protected from loss or damage.
- Do not photograph or upload the phrase, enter it into a website, or send it to someone claiming to be support. Coldcard’s incident migration guidance also warns against entering seed words, passphrases, backup passwords, extended private keys, or private-key QR material into a website or sending them to support.
- Use the manufacturer’s official instructions if you need to check or restore a backup. Trezor advises using official contact channels if you are concerned about compromise.
A metal recovery-phrase backup plate is one possible way to preserve recovery material physically, but the cited guidance does not establish that any particular plate is essential or immune to theft, fire, or other damage. Physical backups still need secure storage and a plan for who can access them.

What the 2026 Coldcard incident means for buyers and owners
Coldcard’s security-status page describes a July 2026 firmware bug that weakened seed generation. The page, checked on October 1, 2026, lists current standard recommendations of firmware 5.6.3 for Mk4/Mk5 and 1.5.3Q for Q. Version boundaries differ by model and firmware track, including older Mk2/Mk3 and separate Edge tracks, so owners should consult Coldcard’s live security-status and migration pages rather than infer their status from the model name alone.
The key practical point is that installing a fixed update does not repair a seed that was already generated under affected firmware. Coldcard’s official migration guidance states: “If your seed was generated on affected firmware, updating the device is not enough.” Its instructions tell affected users to install fixed firmware, generate a completely new seed, verify the new wallet, and transfer funds to it. Follow the current official instructions for your exact model and firmware track.
This incident is not evidence that every Coldcard seed—or every hardware wallet—is compromised. Coldcard describes its status page as a living postmortem and says its checks are not a complete audit or a guarantee against defects. The incident is a reason to check current vendor guidance before choosing or updating a device, not to assume that a particular model is affected without checking its version-specific instructions.
