If you want reliable, native compatibility with Nintendo 3DS games, choose a console from the Nintendo 3DS family. For a 2D-only screen, the New Nintendo 2DS XL is a practical option: Nintendo says it plays all Nintendo 3DS games in 2D and includes a C Stick and ZL/ZR buttons. If glasses-free stereoscopic 3D matters to you, look at New Nintendo 3DS-family models instead, and check the requirements for the specific games you want to play.
Nintendo has ended production of the 3DS family, so buying one now usually means evaluating used hardware. This guide explains what to compare, what to inspect before you buy, and what Nintendo’s ended digital and online services mean for playing today.
Which handheld can play Nintendo 3DS games?
Nintendo’s compatibility guidance identifies Nintendo 3DS-family systems as the systems for Nintendo 3DS software. If playing games on their original handheld hardware is your priority, choose a 3DS-family console rather than assuming that a general-purpose PC or Android handheld will run the library.

The choice within the family mainly comes down to whether you want stereoscopic 3D, whether a particular game has a New-system requirement, and the condition and completeness of the used console you find.
New Nintendo 2DS XL or a New Nintendo 3DS-family model?
Use your screen preference as the first filter. The New Nintendo 2DS XL is for players who are comfortable playing in 2D. A New Nintendo 3DS-family model is the alternative to consider if you specifically want glasses-free stereoscopic 3D. In either case, check the exact game’s system requirements before buying; a family name alone does not answer whether a title requires a New-system model.

The New Nintendo 2DS XL is a strong fit if 2D play suits you and the particular games you want do not require a different system. How to choose a used 3DS-family console
Because manufacture has ended, the purchase decision is about the specific unit, not just the model. A well-kept console with the parts you need can be a better choice than a nominally more attractive model in poor condition. Compare listings using the same checks so that missing accessories or an uncertain defect do not get lost in the headline price.
- Write down the games you intend to play. Check their system requirements, including any New-system requirement. This prevents buying a model based only on the broad “3DS games” description.
- Decide whether you want stereoscopic 3D. If you do not, the New Nintendo 2DS XL avoids paying for a feature you will not use. If you do, focus on New Nintendo 3DS-family models and verify that the exact unit offers the feature you want.
- Check the listing’s exact model name. Look for a clear model identification and photos of the actual console. If the name, photos, or stated features conflict, ask the seller to clarify before committing.
- Inspect the hinge and both screens. Look for cracks, looseness, damage, visible screen defects, and signs that the hinge does not hold the console as expected. Ask for close-up photos if the listing does not show these areas clearly.
- Check the controls and cartridge slot. Confirm that the buttons and controls are present and appear undamaged, and ask whether the cartridge slot has been checked. A listing that does not establish their condition leaves you with more uncertainty.
- Ask about battery and included items. Find out whether the battery holds a charge and whether a charger, stylus, and storage are included. Do not assume an accessory is part of the sale just because it appears in a generic product photo.
- Confirm the region and return terms. Check the console’s region and whether the seller accepts returns if the unit arrives damaged or materially different from the description. Questions to ask a seller

- Do the hinge, screens, controls, and cartridge slot work as expected?

- What region is the system from, and what are the return terms if it arrives with an undisclosed fault?
A seller’s answer is not a substitute for a return policy, but it can reveal what the listing does and does not establish. Prefer an actual-unit listing with clear photos and specific condition details over a description that relies only on the model name.

What digital purchases and downloads are still available?
Nintendo ended Nintendo 3DS eShop purchases and free-content downloads on March 27, 2023. That means you should not plan on buying new digital 3DS software through the eShop. Nintendo said previously purchased games and downloadable content, as well as software updates, could still be redownloaded for the foreseeable future. “For the foreseeable future” is not a promise of indefinite availability.
If you are buying a used system, distinguish between a game already associated with an account and a game you expect to purchase later. Do not pay extra based on an assumption that a seller’s digital library transfers with the console; the information here does not establish that it does. If access to a previously purchased download matters, check Nintendo’s current account and redownload guidance before relying on it.

Can you play 3DS games offline?
Yes. Nintendo says that features and game modes that do not require online communication remain usable. The end of online service does not mean that every 3DS game stops working: offline play remains available where the game supports it.
Nintendo ended online play and other features using online communication on April 8, 2024. Nintendo identified online cooperative play, internet rankings, and data distribution among the affected functions. StreetPass uses local communication and remains available, while SpotPass uses online communication and is no longer available. The exact features affected depend on the game; check the title’s own feature information if a particular mode matters to you.
What to verify before you commit
- Game compatibility: The exact console model meets the requirements of the games you plan to play.
- Display preference: A 2D-only screen is acceptable, or the exact model has stereoscopic 3D if that is a requirement for you.
- Hardware condition: The hinge, screens, buttons, cartridge slot, and battery condition are described clearly enough for your comfort.
- Included items: You know whether a charger, stylus, and storage are included rather than assuming they are.
- Used-purchase protections: The seller’s return policy and the unit’s region are clear.
- Service expectations: You are not counting on new eShop purchases or online communication features that Nintendo has ended.
For most players who do not need stereoscopic 3D, the New Nintendo 2DS XL is a sensible starting point to compare against other used listings. If 3D matters, compare New Nintendo 3DS-family models instead. In both cases, the best choice is the exact compatible unit whose condition and included items you can verify.
