If the RTX 5090 is unavailable—or only listed at an unreasonable price—choose by workload and the price you can actually pay, not by looking for a card that matches it in every task. The RTX 5080 is the next Nvidia tier; the RTX 5070 Ti costs less at its official starting price but sits lower in the lineup. For gaming value, the Radeon RX 9070 XT is worth comparing, especially if ray tracing and creator or AI software are not your main priorities. Check current stock, seller, and checkout total before deciding: U.S. price snapshots accessed October 11, 2026 showed major markups on several alternatives.
Start with what you need the card to do
The RTX 5090 is Nvidia’s flagship, but the nearest alternative is not automatically the best purchase. A card that suits high-refresh-rate gaming may be a poor fit for a particular rendering, AI, or production application. Narrow the choice using your main workload, target resolution and refresh rate, desired graphics settings, and budget.
- Gaming: Compare performance in the games you play, at your resolution and settings. Consider ray tracing separately from conventional rasterized rendering.
- Creator, AI, or professional applications: Look up results and support for the exact software and tasks you use. Gaming rankings do not establish how a card will perform in an application.
- Mixed use: Decide which workload matters most, then check whether the other one has a meaningful performance or compatibility requirement before paying extra.
Also include your power supply, available case space, and the final card price in the decision. These can rule out a model even when its performance looks suitable.

| Card | Consider it when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 5080 | You want to remain with Nvidia and buy the next product tier below the 5090. | Its actual price premium, performance in your applications and games, and the exact model’s power and size requirements. Nvidia lists a 16 GB configuration; check the specifications of the card you are buying. |
| GeForce RTX 5070 Ti | You want a lower Nvidia tier and the price is sufficiently below the 5080 to make the trade-off worthwhile. | Whether its current street price makes sense against the manufacturer’s $749 U.S. starting price and the alternatives available locally. |
| Radeon RX 9070 XT | Gaming is the priority and local pricing is attractive relative to the Nvidia cards. | Ray-tracing performance and support for the creator or AI software you use, as well as game-specific results. |
| Radeon RX 9070 GRE, RX 9060 XT, Intel Arc B580 or B570 | You are willing to move farther down the performance tiers to meet a tighter budget. | Current local availability and benchmarks for your particular workload. These are lower-tier options, not established 5090-class substitutes. |
Nvidia’s official lineup places the RTX 5080 below the RTX 5090, followed by the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070. Product order is not proof that a lower-tier card matches the 5090 in every workload. Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 50 Series lineup also presents performance comparisons using different resolutions and settings across tiers, with DLSS and frame generation included in its graphics.

For gaming
Compare the same games, resolution, and quality settings where possible. Separate native-resolution results from upscaled results, and check whether frame generation is enabled. Those features can affect displayed frame rates and image quality; a headline FPS number is not a universal comparison.
Tom’s Guide’s 2026 review reports the RX 9070 XT at roughly 95% of the RTX 5070 Ti’s performance for 80% of the cost under that review’s test conditions. The review also identifies weaker ray tracing and AI or productivity considerations as trade-offs. Treat this as evidence for a gaming-value comparison in that review—not as proof of equivalence across games, settings, or applications. Read the RX 9070 XT review and its test context.

For creator, AI, and other applications
Check benchmarks and documented support for your specific applications rather than assuming gaming results carry over. The available comparisons do not establish one card as the winner across every creator or AI workload. If a required application has vendor-specific features or constraints, verify those before choosing a GPU.

Manufacturer starting prices and launch prices are useful reference points, not assurances that a card is in stock at that price. Nvidia’s U.S. figures list starting prices of $1,999 for the RTX 5090, $999 for the RTX 5080, and $749 for the RTX 5070 Ti. Its 2025 launch announcement gave desktop-card prices of $1,999 and $999 for the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080, available January 30, 2025, and $749 and $549 for the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070, available in February 2025. As a dated U.S. observation, PC Gamer’s price-watch page accessed October 11, 2026 listed the RTX 5090 as unavailable from reputable sellers. It listed the RTX 5080 at $1,654, RTX 5070 Ti at $1,150, RTX 5070 at $779, RX 9070 XT at $800, RX 9070 GRE at $550, and Intel Arc B580 at $330. These are listings observed on that page, not guaranteed prices or universal market values; seller, stock, promotion, and account conditions can affect what a buyer can actually purchase. Check PC Gamer’s current price-watch listings.
A separate Tom’s Guide price matrix in its 2026 review page listed U.S. lows of $1,179 for the RTX 5070 Ti against a $749 MSRP, $879 for the RX 9070 XT against a $599 MSRP, and $579 for the RX 9070 GRE against a $549 MSRP. Its timing and methodology differ from PC Gamer’s snapshot, so the figures should not be combined as if they were one simultaneous market survey. See Tom’s Guide’s review and price matrix.

AMD’s comparison slide labels its RX 9070 XT versus RTX 5070 Ti prices as suggested retail prices as of February 2025. That is manufacturer-provided historical pricing context, not independent testing or a current availability check. View AMD’s comparison slide. Stock can also vary between closely related cards: Tom’s Hardware reported abundant RX 9070 GRE supply around its $549 MSRP on August 10, 2026, while the range of RX 9070 16 GB cards appeared smaller at that time. - Confirm the exact card model. Board-partner versions of the same GPU can differ in dimensions, cooling, power requirements, and connectors. Use the manufacturer’s specifications for the model in the listing.
- Check your power supply. Verify capacity and the connectors required by that specific card. Do not assume a different version of the same GPU has identical requirements.
- Measure case clearance. Compare the card’s length and other published dimensions with your case’s available space, including any potential obstruction from installed components.
- Review cooling and fit. Check the card’s cooling design and whether the case can accommodate it without blocking airflow or interfering with other components.
- Evaluate the purchase terms. Confirm seller reputation, warranty coverage, return policy, and the final checkout price, including shipping and taxes where applicable.
Make the decision using the price available to you
Compare the final price of cards you can actually buy from a seller you trust. The RTX 5080 is the next Nvidia tier below the 5090, but whether its premium is worthwhile depends on your performance needs and local price. The RTX 5070 Ti is a lower Nvidia tier; do not pay a large markup simply because it is the nearest affordable Nvidia option. The RX 9070 XT merits a closer look when gaming value is the priority and its local price is compelling, but its review results do not establish it as a universal replacement for the 5090. If none of the available cards offers acceptable value, waiting for stock or prices to change is a reasonable choice.
