Choose a graphics card by matching it to the work you actually do, the resolution or display you use, and the software that must run on it. Then verify VRAM capacity, ray-tracing and upscaling support, application and driver compatibility, case clearance, power draw, power-supply capacity, and connector requirements. Current independent tests and local prices should decide between models that otherwise fit.

There is no universal “best” GPU or VRAM minimum. A card that is excellent for rasterized 1440p gaming may be a poor choice for a renderer, video codec, or local AI model. The process below separates those decisions and shows how to check a complete PC rather than judging a card by its name or one headline specification.

1. Define the workload before looking at brands

Write down the programs, games, models, display resolution, refresh rate, and quality targets that matter. A graphics card is a specialized processor and memory system; its useful performance depends on the code running on it.

Gaming

Record the games you play, target resolution, desired refresh rate, graphics preset, ray tracing preference, and whether you are willing to use upscaling or frame generation. Compare cards using tests in those games, not an average from unrelated titles. Native raster performance, ray-tracing performance, and the quality and availability of upscaling or frame-generation features are separate properties.

Creative work

Name the exact applications and operations: timeline playback, 3D rendering, viewport work, compositing, effects, AI-assisted tools, or export. A card may accelerate one renderer or effect and do little for another. Check the application’s supported APIs, renderer, plugins, effects, and video codecs before treating a specification as useful.

Local AI

Identify the framework, model size, quantization, context length, and task. The model and its runtime must fit in usable VRAM, and the framework and drivers must support the GPU. Inference speed, training throughput, and multi-GPU scaling are different measurements; seek tests for the exact model and workload.

Workload First comparison Capacity or compatibility check
Gaming Performance at your resolution, settings, ray tracing and upscaling mode VRAM headroom, game support for the features you intend to use
Creative applications Your renderer, editor, effects and export workflow GPU acceleration, driver, plugin and codec support
Local AI Framework and measured throughput for your model Usable VRAM, model fit, quantization and multi-GPU support

2. Match gaming performance to the display

Resolution and refresh rate

A 1080p high-refresh monitor, a 1440p display and a 4K panel impose different workloads. Higher resolution increases the number of pixels rendered; high refresh rates require the GPU to produce frames quickly and consistently. Choose tests at the resolution you will actually use. If you plan to replace the monitor soon, include that future target rather than buying only for today’s display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quality settings and ray tracing

Use separate evidence for conventional raster rendering and ray tracing. A card can lead in one and trail in the other. If ray tracing is a must-have, examine frame rates with the specific effects enabled in your games, together with the upscaling mode you would accept. Do not infer a neutral cross-brand ranking from a vendor’s feature page; those pages explain the technology but are not controlled comparisons.

Upscaling and frame generation

Check whether the games you play support the upscaler and frame-generation system associated with a candidate card, and inspect image quality at the resolution and performance mode you would use. Generated frames can improve displayed smoothness without replacing the need for a responsive base frame rate. Treat support and quality as game-specific rather than assuming a feature works identically everywhere.

VRAM for games

VRAM stores textures, frame buffers and other graphics data. More capacity can allow higher settings or more complex scenes, but it is not a complete performance score. A card with more VRAM can still render more slowly, lack a required feature, or have inadequate software support. Compare capacity with the settings and texture packs you actually use, and leave headroom for future games instead of treating one number as a universal minimum.

3. Match creative workloads to software support

Find the acceleration path

Open the documentation for each application and note its supported GPU APIs, renderers, effects, and recommended driver branch. Confirm that the plugins you rely on use GPU acceleration and whether they require a particular vendor or architecture. A timeline editor may use the GPU for effects but rely on the CPU for some codecs; a 3D package may support several renderers with very different performance.

Check codecs and media engines

For video work, verify hardware decode and encode for the formats you ingest and deliver. AMD’s creator material describes hardware-accelerated effects and encode/decode for HEVC, H.264 and AV1; that is a vendor capability statement, so confirm the exact application’s implementation and supported profiles. If your workflow is mostly editing a codec the card cannot accelerate, extra gaming performance may not shorten exports.

Use application-specific tests

Prefer benchmarks that reproduce your sequence, effects, scene, or render settings. Compare completion time, playback stability and memory use, not only a synthetic score. A card that finishes one renderer quickly may be less useful if your plugins, denoiser or color pipeline run elsewhere.

4. Evaluate local AI by model fit and framework

Calculate usable VRAM

Model weights are only part of the allocation. Runtime overhead, activations, context length, temporary buffers and the operating system reduce the memory available for the model. Quantization can reduce the footprint, but may change quality and supported operations. Check whether your chosen runtime can offload layers to system memory; offloading may allow a model to load while reducing throughput.

Confirm framework and driver support

Before buying, verify support for the framework, operating system, precision modes and acceleration backend used by your model. A large theoretical compute figure is irrelevant if the software cannot use it. Look for measurements on your exact model, batch size, context length and task, and distinguish inference from training results.

Examples of published capacity

AMD describes the Radeon RX 9070 with 16 GB of video memory as “a great entry-point to AI acceleration on AMD Radeon.” That is AMD’s product positioning, not an independent speed ranking. AMD describes the Radeon AI PRO R9700 as a 32 GB card with multi-GPU support for large language models and other compute-heavy workloads; again, verify framework support and seek independent workload measurements before treating it as a recommendation.

5. Treat VRAM as a capacity constraint, not a speed rating

Video memory holds data close to the GPU. More of it can prevent texture or model data from spilling into slower system memory and can permit larger projects, but capacity does not tell you how quickly the card processes that data. Compare VRAM, compute performance, memory bandwidth, software support and power together.

AMD’s March 2025 RX 9000 desktop guide lists 16 GB for both the Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. Those figures establish capacity for those reference models; they do not establish a universal gaming or AI requirement, nor do they measure performance.

6. Verify the complete system fit

Reference specifications for two RX 9000 examples

The following are AMD reference figures from its March 2025 desktop quick-reference guide. Add-in-board versions can differ, so use the exact card’s manual and product page before purchase.

Reference model VRAM Total board power Recommended PSU Power connectors Interface and form factor
Radeon RX 9070 16 GB 220 W 650 W Two 8-pin PCIe Gen 5; dual-slot
Radeon RX 9070 XT 16 GB 304 W 750 W Two 8-pin PCIe Gen 5; dual-slot

Measure case clearance

Check the card’s published length, height, width and slot thickness against the case. A “dual-slot” reference design does not guarantee that every partner card occupies two slots; coolers can be wider or taller. Leave room for front radiators, drive cages, side panels and airflow around the fans. Confirm that the card can be inserted without blocking adjacent expansion slots you need.

Check power supply capacity and connectors

Compare the exact card’s board-power figure and PSU recommendation with your system’s CPU, drives, fans and other expansion cards. Use separate, correctly rated PCIe power cables where the manufacturer requires them; do not force an incompatible connector or rely on an adapter without checking its rating and installation instructions. NVIDIA notes that system-power requirements vary with configuration and that published specifications describe reference designs that may differ from partner cards.

Check motherboard and operating-system support

Ensure the motherboard has a compatible full-length PCIe slot, current firmware where required, and enough physical space. PCIe generations are generally interoperable, but the slot must provide the electrical connection and bandwidth your workload needs. Install a driver branch supported by the applications you use, and remove or replace an old driver cleanly when troubleshooting a major vendor change.

7. Compare candidate cards on the same checklist

Axis Questions to answer Evidence to use
Gaming How does it perform at target resolution, settings, ray tracing and upscaling modes? Independent tests using your games and a consistent test system
Creative Does the exact renderer, editor, effect, plugin and codec use it? Application documentation and workflow-specific benchmarks
AI Does the framework support it, and does the model fit in usable VRAM? Runtime documentation and tests for the exact model and task
Memory Is there enough VRAM for current projects and reasonable growth? Project measurements, not a universal minimum
System fit Will length, thickness, power and connectors fit safely? Exact add-in-board specification and your case/PSU manuals
Cost What is the current card price plus any PSU, case or cooling change? Local prices and current independent testing

Prices, stock, drivers and partner-card designs change quickly. The available evidence does not establish a current universal best-value GPU. Recheck local street prices and fresh independent tests immediately before buying; the RX 9000 launch announcement’s March 6, 2025 availability date is historical, not a statement about current stock.

8. A step-by-step buying process

  1. Write the target. List games, applications, AI models, display resolution, refresh rate, quality settings, renderers, codecs and operating system.
  2. Set the performance boundary. Decide whether you need native rendering, ray tracing, a supported upscaler, a specific export time or a model that must remain entirely in VRAM.
  3. Shortlist compatible architectures. Eliminate cards whose drivers, APIs, plugins, codecs or AI frameworks do not support your workload.
  4. Compare independent results. Use tests that match the resolution, application, model and settings you recorded. Keep raster, ray tracing, creative and AI results in separate columns.
  5. Check memory. Confirm that VRAM accommodates assets, model overhead and future headroom; do not substitute capacity for compute performance.
  6. Verify the exact board. Record its length, width, thickness, slot count, board power, connector count, cooling requirements and warranty conditions.
  7. Validate the PC. Compare the card with case clearance, motherboard slots, PSU capacity, cable routing and CPU balance. Price any required upgrade as part of the GPU purchase.
  8. Recheck price and availability. Compare current local prices on the same day and account for taxes, delivery and return terms. Buy only after the complete system and software checks pass.

9. Common mistakes and how to recover

Choosing by brand or model tier alone

Symptom: A highly rated card performs poorly in your main application. Fix: Return to application-specific tests and confirm its renderer, effects, codecs or framework before considering model hierarchy.

Using VRAM as the only ranking

Symptom: A card has enough memory but misses your frame-rate or render-time target. Fix: Compare compute performance and measured workload results separately from capacity.

Trusting reference dimensions or power figures for every partner card

Symptom: The card does not fit, blocks a slot, or exceeds the PSU’s practical margin. Fix: Check the exact add-in-board drawing and connector instructions, then recalculate total system power.

Ignoring software updates and support windows

Symptom: A game, editor or AI runtime lacks acceleration or behaves inconsistently. Fix: Install the application-recommended driver, update the runtime and verify supported versions before replacing hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing unlike benchmarks

Symptom: Synthetic scores suggest a win that your workload does not show. Fix: Use repeatable tests with the same scene, project, model, settings and driver family; treat synthetic results as supplementary.

10. Practical decision patterns

Gaming-first system

Prioritize tests at your monitor’s resolution and refresh target, then separate raster and ray-tracing results. Confirm that the games you play support the desired upscaling or frame-generation mode. Choose the card that meets the target with acceptable image quality and has enough VRAM for your texture settings, after checking physical and electrical fit.

Editing and 3D workstation

Start with the renderer, effects and codecs that dominate your projects. A card with strong gaming results is not automatically the fastest in your editor. Verify playback, export and render measurements, then size VRAM for your largest scenes and timelines and confirm plugin and driver compatibility.

Local AI workstation

Start with the largest model and context you intend to run. Confirm that the framework supports the architecture, calculate usable VRAM after overhead, and compare throughput for your exact quantization and batch size. If a single card cannot hold the model, investigate supported multi-GPU or offload paths rather than assuming that adding any second card will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixed gaming, creative and AI PC

Rank workloads by consequence: the application that cannot be replaced or offloaded should set the compatibility floor. Among cards that pass that floor, compare gaming performance, VRAM headroom, noise, power and total upgrade cost. Document which compromises are acceptable before buying.

11. Keep the choice current

GPU generations, drivers, features, prices and partner designs change rapidly. Recheck the exact model specification, current driver notes, application support and independent testing at purchase time. The figures in this guide are dated where stated: AMD’s RX 9000 reference guide is from March 2025, while the source material was accessed October 13, 2026. Vendor claims such as AMD’s AI and creator descriptions should be treated as capability statements until independent tests demonstrate performance for your workload.
