Choose the host that fits your repository’s actual shape and workload, not the one with the largest headline quota. Measure Git history, working-tree size, binary files, branch and tag counts, clone and CI frequency, and Git LFS traffic. Then compare the current limits and enforcement rules for GitHub, GitLab.com or GitLab Self-Managed, and Bitbucket Cloud; run the same operations from your developers’ and build runners’ regions; and price repository storage, LFS storage, bandwidth, artifacts, and administration together.

There is no documented, independent benchmark proving that one of these services is universally fastest. A repository with many small text files behaves differently from one with years of changing media assets, and a full clone from a distant CI region can produce a different result from an incremental fetch near your team. The method below gives you a defensible choice and a migration plan.

What “large repository” really means

Size on disk is only one part of the problem. Two repositories with the same checkout size can have very different hosting costs and failure modes. One may contain a compact working tree but a long history of replaced binaries; another may have a wide monorepo, thousands of refs, and continuous CI checkouts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record these measurements before comparing plans:

  • Git object database: the size of .git/objects and its growth per month, including packed objects.
  • Working tree: the size of a clean checkout and the number of files and directories.
  • Historical blobs: the largest objects ever committed, not just files present on the default branch.
  • Change pattern: how often large files are replaced, and whether they are binary or text.
  • Refs: branch, tag, release, and remote-reference counts, including stale refs that still retain objects.
  • Operations: full and shallow clone times, incremental fetches, pushes, checkouts, merges, and CI checkout frequency.
  • LFS use: current LFS storage, monthly downloads, and the number of developers and runners retrieving those objects.
  • Geography: the regions of people, build agents, mirrors, and disaster-recovery systems.

GitHub’s repository guidance states that large repositories can slow fetch operations and increase clone times for developers and CI. That is why a provider’s nominal capacity is not a performance guarantee. Measure the operations that make your team wait.

Measure the repository you have

Run these checks from a fresh clone or a maintenance copy, and save the results with a date so that growth is visible:

git count-objects -vH
git rev-list --all --objects | wc -l
git branch --all --list | wc -l
git tag --list | wc -l
du -sh .git .

git count-objects -vH reports loose and packed object totals; du shows the local checkout and Git metadata. These are starting points, not a complete quota calculation. Ask each candidate how it counts repository data, LFS objects, archives, packages, and generated artifacts.

To locate unusually large historical blobs, inspect all objects rather than only the current tree. A maintenance script can enumerate object IDs with git rev-list --objects --all, query their types and sizes with git cat-file --batch-check, and sort by size. Keep the script in your internal runbook so the same measurement can be repeated before and after cleanup.

Decide what belongs in Git

Keep source code, configuration, documentation, and other reviewable text in ordinary Git. Version large binaries with Git LFS when the files genuinely belong with the source and need commit-level history. Put reproducible build outputs, caches, nightly packages, and other generated data in artifact or object storage instead of creating permanent Git history for them. GitHub specifically recommends external object storage for programmatically generated files.

Why repeated binaries hurt ordinary Git

Every changed binary version is a new object. Even when Git compresses related data, a history containing frequent revisions of large media, installers, datasets, or design files can become expensive to clone, fetch, mirror, and back up. Deleting a file from the current branch does not remove the old object from history.

What Git LFS changes

Git LFS is an open-source Git extension that stores a small pointer file in Git while the large binary is held in separate LFS storage. Clones and checkouts retrieve the real object when needed. This prevents ordinary Git history from carrying every binary payload, but it introduces separate storage and transfer quotas, authentication paths, backup requirements, and failure modes. Count LFS downloads from both people and CI; a repository can fit comfortably while its LFS bandwidth is exhausted.

Published limits and quotas to compare

The following figures come from vendor documentation verified in October 2026. Plan names, quotas, and enforcement can change, so verify the exact page and plan immediately before purchase or migration. A recommendation, a soft warning, and an enforced stop are different things.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Platform Repository and storage guidance LFS allocation stated in the documentation Operational implications to verify
GitHub Recommended on-disk repository size: 10 GB or less. Documentation also lists a 2 GB enforced push-size limit and a 100 MB enforced single-object limit. 10 GiB for Free and Pro; 250 GiB for Team and Enterprise Cloud, with separate storage and bandwidth quotas. Check current plan quotas, LFS download volume, read traffic from CI, clone strategy, and whether the repository is approaching the operational recommendations. Generated files are better suited to external object storage.
GitLab.com Repository plus LFS storage: 10 GiB on Free and 500 GiB on Premium or Ultimate in the cited documentation. Some actions become restricted after the storage limit is exceeded. Included in the combined project-storage figures above. Confirm how the selected tier counts repository and LFS data, what becomes restricted at the boundary, and the current overage or upgrade process.
GitLab Self-Managed Administrators can set repository-size limits, with the documented setting able to include LFS objects. Depends on the capacity and policies you operate. Budget disks, object storage, backups, monitoring, upgrades, support, and staff time. A configurable limit is not the same as unlimited capacity.
Bitbucket Cloud Atlassian recommends staying below 2 GB and states a 4 GB hard repository limit that blocks further pushes. Free workspaces have a 1 GB total repository-storage limit. 1 GB Free, 5 GB Academic, 5 GB Standard, and 10 GB Premium; additional storage is sold in 100 GB units. Plan changes do not increase the repository-size limit. Test LFS forks, archives, transfers, backups, and locking because the service has specific limitations.

These values are vendor-published operational or quota facts, not an independent capacity or speed ranking. Keep a copy of the relevant policy in your architecture record and set alerts well before the limit.

How each platform affects a large-repository decision

GitHub: strict object and push guardrails

The 10 GB recommendation is an operational target, not a promise that every repository above it immediately stops working. The 2 GB enforced push-size limit applies to a push operation, while the 100 MB enforced single-object limit applies to an individual Git object. Large binaries therefore normally require LFS, and generated outputs should normally live in artifact or object storage. Verify your plan’s 10 GiB or 250 GiB LFS storage and bandwidth allowances, then estimate CI’s repeated downloads rather than counting only developer use.

GitLab.com: combined project storage and restricted actions

The cited GitLab.com figures combine repository and LFS storage: 10 GiB for Free and 500 GiB for Premium or Ultimate. Because some actions become restricted after the limit, crossing it can interrupt writing and maintenance rather than simply add a bill. Determine exactly which actions are restricted for your tier, who receives alerts, and how quickly additional capacity can be approved. If you need administrator-defined limits, capacity planning, or a controlled network location, evaluate GitLab Self-Managed separately; its storage becomes your operational responsibility.

Bitbucket Cloud: a lower repository ceiling and LFS caveats

Bitbucket Cloud recommends repositories remain under 2 GB and enforces a 4 GB hard limit that blocks additional pushes. A plan upgrade does not raise that repository-size ceiling. Free workspaces have a 1 GB total repository-storage limit, while LFS allocations range from 1 GB to 10 GB by plan, with extra storage sold in 100 GB units.

Bitbucket Cloud’s LFS behavior can determine suitability even when capacity looks sufficient: LFS repositories cannot use the normal repository-transfer flow; forks do not automatically copy LFS objects into a new remote store; downloadable archives contain pointer files rather than the actual LFS payloads; and Git LFS locking is unsupported. A team that depends on artist-style exclusive checkout, complete archive downloads, or one-click forks must test alternatives before committing.

Compare performance with your own workload

No reviewed documentation provides a controlled, independent GitHub-versus-GitLab-versus-Bitbucket benchmark. Do not publish or adopt a “fastest host” assumption. Build a repeatable test using a sanitized copy of your repository and the same client versions, network locations, and runner images.

Test matrix

Operation What to record Why it matters
Fresh full clone Elapsed time, bytes transferred, peak disk use, and success or failure. Models onboarding, disaster recovery, and an unprimed CI runner.
Shallow clone and sparse checkout Time to obtain the paths and history each job actually needs. Shows whether monorepo layout and selective checkout reduce traffic.
Incremental fetch Time and bytes for a typical day of commits and tags. Represents normal developer synchronization.
Branch checkout Time to switch between representative branches, including LFS retrieval. Exposes working-tree and binary-download costs.
Typical push Time, rejected-object behavior, and server-side validation. Shows whether large changes approach push limits.
CI checkout Parallel jobs, cache-hit and cache-miss times, LFS downloads, and rate-limit responses. CI often multiplies repository and LFS traffic.

Run each test several times from the regions where developers and runners operate. Record medians and the slowest runs, but label the results as your environment’s measurements, not a universal provider ranking. Include a test with a representative large binary change and one with a text-only change; they exercise different paths.

Cloud versus self-managed deployment

A hosted service removes most storage, upgrades, and availability work, but leaves you subject to its quotas, regional behavior, and policy changes. Self-managed hosting can provide network isolation, administrator-defined repository limits, and custom backup placement. It also makes your team responsible for capacity forecasts, redundant storage, upgrades, vulnerability response, monitoring, restore drills, support contracts, and on-call expertise. Compare the operational headcount and recovery objectives, not just subscription prices.

Backups, archives, forks, and locks

Define what “backup” means: Git refs only, Git plus all LFS objects, issues and pull requests, reviews, releases, hooks, secrets, and permissions. An archive that contains LFS pointer files without payloads is not a restorable source snapshot. Likewise, a fork that omits LFS objects may compile only after it reconnects to the original storage. If designers or other contributors need exclusive editing, verify LFS locking support explicitly; Bitbucket Cloud’s documented limitation may rule it out.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Build a cost model that includes traffic

Separate these line items for each candidate:

  • Repository storage and any included project quota.
  • LFS storage, including historical objects retained after branch deletion.
  • LFS download bandwidth for developers, CI, mirrors, and release jobs.
  • Artifact, package, container, or object storage for generated outputs.
  • CI minutes, runner egress, cache storage, and parallel checkout traffic.
  • Backup storage, replication, and restore testing.
  • Self-managed compute, databases, object storage, upgrades, monitoring, and staff time.
  • Migration work, including history rewriting, clean reclones, integration changes, and a temporary dual-host period.

Model a normal month and a peak month. A release train or large CI fan-out can multiply LFS downloads even when repository growth is flat. Ask what happens when a quota is reached: GitLab documents restricted actions above its project-storage limit, and Bitbucket documents blocked pushes at its hard repository limit. Establish alerts at a conservative threshold and name the person who can approve remediation.

Moving an existing repository to LFS or another host

Adding an LFS tracking rule affects files committed afterward. It does not convert matching files already present in history. Existing objects require a history rewrite, and the resulting commit IDs differ from the originals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare an inventory

  1. List every branch, tag, release ref, mirror, submodule, deployment pin, and automation checkout.
  2. Find large historical blobs and classify each as source, versioned binary, generated output, secret, or obsolete data.
  3. Count all LFS objects and verify that every object can be downloaded from the current remote.
  4. Inventory issues, reviews, permissions, webhooks, deploy keys, CI variables, package references, and external integrations that a Git transfer will not automatically reproduce.
  5. Choose the destination plan and confirm repository, LFS, bandwidth, archive, and fork behavior before rewriting anything.

Rehearse on a copy

  1. Create a full mirror or equivalent offline backup, including all refs and LFS objects. Verify that a test clone can check out every release that must remain reproducible.
  2. Run the chosen history-rewrite tool on a disposable copy, moving only the approved paths or file patterns into LFS and removing confirmed generated or secret data.
  3. Push the rewritten refs to a test remote and exercise clone, fetch, checkout, LFS pull, CI, release creation, submodules, and deployment automation.
  4. Measure the resulting Git and LFS sizes and compare them with the destination limits and projected growth.

Coordinate the cutover

  1. Announce a freeze window and publish the exact new remote, affected branches, and expected commit-ID change.
  2. Stop writes to the old remote, perform the final mirror and LFS-object transfer, and validate refs and release points on the destination.
  3. Rotate or reissue credentials and update CI, mirrors, hooks, submodules, deployment systems, and documentation.
  4. Require developers to make fresh clones or follow a tested reconciliation procedure. Do not allow old clones to push blindly.
  5. Keep the old repository read-only for the agreed retention period, monitor for failed LFS downloads and stale integrations, then retire it only after restore and audit checks pass.

GitLab warns that users can revive files removed from rewritten history if old clones are not handled correctly. Any clone containing the pre-rewrite objects can push those objects back into the new history. Treat old clones as a data-governance risk, not merely an inconvenience.

A practical selection decision tree

Choose hosted Git when

  • Your team wants the provider to operate availability, upgrades, and most storage infrastructure.
  • Your measured repository and LFS growth fit the exact plan with a safety margin.
  • The provider’s review, identity, audit, integration, backup, archive, fork, and locking behavior matches your workflow.

Choose self-managed Git when

  • Network isolation, administrator-defined limits, data residency, or custom retention is a requirement.
  • You can fund redundant capacity, upgrades, security response, monitoring, backups, restore drills, and specialist operations.
  • You have tested the complete stack, including LFS object storage and CI traffic, rather than only the Git server.

Prefer an LFS-plus-artifact split when

  • Some binaries must be versioned and reviewed with source, while build outputs are reproducible or disposable.
  • Repository growth is driven mainly by generated files that do not need commit history.
  • CI repeatedly downloads artifacts that would be cheaper and more controllable in a dedicated artifact service.

Pre-commit checklist

  • Repository, history, refs, working tree, binary, and LFS measurements are documented with dates.
  • Growth projections cover at least the expected retention period and a peak release month.
  • Every quota is labeled as recommended, soft, or enforced, with the consequence of crossing it.
  • Clone, fetch, push, checkout, LFS, and CI tests ran from actual team and runner regions.
  • Backup and restore tests include all LFS payloads, not only pointer files.
  • Workflow requirements cover reviews, permissions, integrations, forks, archives, and locking.
  • Generated outputs have an artifact or object-storage destination.
  • Migration rehearsal covers refs, commit-ID changes, credentials, CI, submodules, releases, and old-clone cleanup.
  • Alerts and an owner exist before storage or bandwidth reaches a provider boundary.

Bottom line

For a large repository, the best Git host is the one that remains operationally comfortable after you include history, LFS payloads, CI traffic, backups, and growth—not the one with the biggest advertised number. GitHub’s guidance centers on keeping repositories at or below 10 GB and enforcing 2 GB pushes and 100 MB individual objects; GitLab.com documents 10 GiB or 500 GiB combined project storage by tier; Bitbucket Cloud recommends under 2 GB and enforces a 4 GB repository ceiling. Those facts narrow the options, but only a workload test and a complete cost-and-control review can make the final choice.
