There is no single best gaming monitor for every player. Start with your PC or console and the games you play, then choose a resolution and refresh rate your system can use. From there, compare adaptive sync, panel type, HDR certification, ports, warranty, and price.

Match the monitor to your system and games

A monitor’s maximum refresh rate is useful only when the gaming system and game can produce enough frames to take advantage of it. A demanding single-player game, a competitive PC game, and a console game can place very different demands on a display. Decide which experience matters most before comparing specifications.

Dell’s September 2026 manufacturer buying guide recommends comparing refresh rate, response time, adaptive sync, and panel type. Treat that as selection guidance, not an independent test or a universal ranking: Dell’s gaming monitor buying guide.

  • For a gaming PC: check the graphics card’s capability at the resolution you want, along with the monitor’s refresh rate and adaptive-sync support.
  • For a console: confirm the exact monitor supports the resolution, refresh rate, and HDMI features you intend to use. Console output depends on the console, monitor, cable, and settings.
  • For mixed use: prioritize the games and platform you use most, then check that the other devices can connect and display at acceptable settings.

Choose resolution and refresh rate together

Resolution determines image detail; refresh rate determines how often the screen can update each second. Neither number alone identifies the better monitor. A higher resolution can demand more from a PC, while a high refresh rate has less practical value if the system and games cannot deliver matching frame rates.

Sceptre New 22-Inch Gaming Monitor, FHD 1080p, Up to 144Hz, HDMI, DisplayPort, Built-in Speakers, Machine Black (E225W-FW144 Series, 2026)
  • 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
  • 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
  • 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.

Consider your viewing distance, screen size, typical games, and system capability. QHD (2560 × 1440) and 4K (3840 × 2160) are different targets, not automatic quality tiers for every player. Ultrawide formats also change the image shape and may affect game support and system load.

Read motion and adaptive-sync claims carefully

Refresh-rate specifications describe a monitor’s stated capability, but they do not establish real-world motion clarity or input lag. Advertised response times also need context: manufacturer GtG figures are not independent measurements under a shared test. For motion performance, look for independent reviews that explain their test conditions and evaluate the exact model.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Adaptive sync can help coordinate the display’s refresh with the system’s frame output. Check the specific monitor’s supported sync technology and compatibility with your PC or console; do not assume a feature works across every input or mode.

Compare panel types and HDR certification

Panel choice affects the image, but the available evidence here does not establish a measured winner between IPS and OLED/QD-OLED. Consider your priorities—such as dark-scene presentation, viewing environment, color, and the type of games you play—and consult independent comparisons for the exact models you are considering.

Dell 27 240Hz Gaming Monitor - SE2726HG - 27-inch FHD (1920x1080) Display, in-Plane Switching (IPS) Technology, AMD FreeSync Premium, TÜV 3-Star, 2X HDMI, DisplayPort 1.4, Tilt
  • Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
  • Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
  • Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.

Look for a named HDR certification rather than relying on an unspecified “HDR” label. VESA says its DisplayHDR specification defines HDR quality using luminance, color gamut, bit depth, and rise time. Its DisplayHDR True Black variant is designed for emissive technologies such as OLED. Certification is useful context, but it does not settle every aspect of HDR image quality or gaming performance. See VESA’s DisplayHDR information.

Verify console ports and the exact model

Console buyers should check the monitor’s HDMI specifications and VRR support against the console’s intended output mode. Dell’s buying guide identifies HDMI 2.1 VRR as relevant to console gaming and discusses 4K/120 output for PS5; that guidance does not guarantee that every monitor with an HDMI 2.1 label supports every desired mode. Confirm the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model and regional SKU, and check the console’s settings and cable requirements.

Check ownership details before you buy

For OLED displays, burn-in mitigation and warranty coverage vary by model and manufacturer. The three-year burn-in warranty listed for the MPG 271QRX applies to that cited MSI example; it should not be assumed for another display. Read the full warranty for the exact model, including exclusions and any registration or usage conditions.

Also compare stand adjustability, connectivity, return terms, regional stock, and total price. A monitor that fits your system but cannot be positioned comfortably or returned under workable terms may be a poor practical choice.

Gaming-monitor buying checklist

  1. Identify your main system: note the PC graphics card or console and the outputs you plan to use.
  2. Set a realistic display target: choose a resolution and refresh rate that fit your games and system rather than buying the largest numbers on the spec sheet.
  3. Check motion and sync: confirm supported adaptive-sync features and consult independent testing for response and latency performance.
  4. Assess image priorities: compare panel type and look for a specific HDR certification if HDR matters to you.
  5. Verify ports and modes: check the exact monitor input, supported console or PC mode, and any cable or settings requirements.
  6. Review ownership terms: confirm the full warranty, OLED burn-in coverage where relevant, stand features, return policy, price, and availability for your region.
