Choose the car that meets your space, route, climate, charging and budget requirements, then compare its total ownership cost under several fuel-price and resale-value scenarios. A high-MPG vehicle is not automatically cheaper: purchase price, financing, insurance, taxes, maintenance, repairs, depreciation and the price you eventually receive at sale can outweigh its fuel savings.
Begin with the cars that are actually suitable
Fuel economy should narrow a list of viable cars, not make an unsuitable car look like a bargain. Write down the requirements that cannot be compromised before comparing numbers.
Define your must-haves
- Passenger and cargo capacity for normal trips.
- Driving conditions, including hills, traffic, weather and highway use.
- Access to home, workplace or public charging if considering an electric vehicle (EV) or plug-in hybrid.
- Maximum purchase price and a monthly payment you can sustain.
- Whether you need towing, all-wheel drive, a particular seating configuration or a long warranty.
Remove any vehicle that fails a must-have requirement. Saving fuel does not compensate for regularly renting another vehicle, making inconvenient charging trips or replacing a car that cannot perform your normal work.
Make the candidates comparable
Compare similar body styles and capability. Record each candidate’s model year, powertrain, transmission, drive layout, asking or transaction price, and whether it is new or used. For a used car, record mileage, condition, service history and accident history as separate facts; two cars with the same EPA rating can have very different ownership costs.

Use EPA information as the common starting point
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency fuel-economy labels provide city, highway and combined fuel-economy estimates, fuel-cost comparisons and emissions information. Labels for EVs also show driving range and charging-time information. Use the label for the exact model year and powertrain rather than relying on a nameplate’s best advertised figure.
EPA says the original fuel-economy estimate remains the best indicator of the average gas mileage of a properly maintained vehicle over a typical 15-year life. Your result can differ because of speed, temperature, payload, tire pressure, driving style and maintenance, but the official estimate gives every candidate the same reference point.
Do not mix different EPA measures
EPA’s Automotive Trends material describes estimated real-world results derived from standardized laboratory tests. Those trend figures are not directly comparable with Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) compliance values. EPA reports that data through model year 2024 are final and based on official EPA and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration submissions, while some model-year 2025 data are preliminary. Use the consumer label for a purchase comparison and treat trend or compliance figures as a different dataset.
Calculate fuel spending for your driving
The basic calculation is:
Annual fuel cost = annual miles ÷ miles per gallon × fuel price per gallon.

For an EV or plug-in hybrid, use the vehicle’s label range and charging information, then enter the portion of your driving that can realistically be completed electrically. A plug-in hybrid’s result depends on how often you charge; its gasoline rating alone cannot describe a driver who rarely plugs in.
Use a consistent input sheet
| Input | How to determine it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Annual miles | Use odometer records, commuting distance and regular trips. | Fuel savings grow with miles driven. |
| City/highway mix | Estimate the share of each type in your normal use. | City and highway ratings differ; a single rating can mislead. |
| Fuel or electricity price | Use a current local price, then create lower and higher cases. | Future prices are unknown and vary by location. |
| Vehicle efficiency | Use the official EPA label for the exact configuration. | Engine, transmission and drive layout can change the rating. |
| Ownership period | Choose the number of years you realistically expect to keep the car. | It determines how long savings accrue and when resale occurs. |
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Vehicle Cost Calculator accepts driving habits and fuel prices and compares total ownership cost and emissions for most makes and models, including alternative-fuel and advanced-technology vehicles. Its output is a calculation based on your inputs, not a forecast of future fuel prices. Change one input at a time so you can see which assumption drives the result.
Illustrative fuel-only comparison
Suppose two otherwise suitable cars are driven the same distance. Car A’s annual fuel cost is calculated with its lower MPG, and Car B’s with its higher MPG. Run the formula at a low, central and high fuel price. If Car B saves only a small amount in the low-price case but a large amount in the high-price case, the fuel advantage is sensitive to the price assumption. Do not convert that sensitivity into a prediction that the high-price case will occur.
Count every ownership cost, not just gasoline
A meaningful comparison uses the same holding period and annual mileage for every candidate. Include the following items:

| Cost or credit | What to include |
|---|---|
| Purchase cost | Transaction price, taxes, registration, documentation and other state or local fees. |
| Financing | Interest, loan fees and the timing of payments; compare cars using the financing you would actually qualify for. |
| Energy | Gasoline, diesel, electricity or a combination, calculated from your use pattern. |
| Insurance | Your location, driver profile, coverage and vehicle-specific premium. |
| Maintenance | Scheduled services, fluids, tires and inspections. |
| Repairs | Expected wear items and a reserve for unscheduled work, especially on an older used car. |
| Depreciation | Purchase price minus the amount you expect to receive when you sell or trade. |
| Resale proceeds | Subtract the estimated sale value at the end of the chosen period; use a local, current valuation as an input rather than a universal forecast. |
Kelley Blue Book’s 5-Year Cost to Own calculator organizes categories such as fuel, financing, maintenance, state fees, insurance, depreciation and repairs. Its estimates vary with the vehicle and owner circumstances, so inspect the assumptions and replace them with your own quotes where possible. The EPA also treats depreciation as a cost of owning a vehicle, even though it is not a bill paid at the pump.
Use a net-cost formula
For each candidate, calculate:
Net ownership cost = purchase and acquisition costs + financing + energy + insurance + fees + maintenance + repairs − resale proceeds.
Keep the period, mileage and treatment of taxes consistent. If one vehicle’s estimate includes a fee or incentive and another’s does not, the ranking is not meaningful until the inputs are normalized.

Build a three-by-three scenario grid
| Lower resale value | Central resale value | Higher resale value | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low fuel price | Calculate net cost with your lower fuel input and lower sale estimate. | Use the lower fuel input and your central sale estimate. | Use the lower fuel input and higher sale estimate. |
| Central fuel price | Use your central fuel input and lower sale estimate. | Use central inputs for both. | Use central fuel input and higher sale estimate. |
| High fuel price | Use your higher fuel input and lower sale estimate. | Use higher fuel input and central sale estimate. | Use higher inputs for both. |
Hold the ownership period, annual miles and other cost categories constant while changing only the two uncertain inputs. For resale, base the central value on current local listings or valuation data for the same age, mileage and condition. Make the lower case reflect a weaker market or poorer-than-expected condition, and the higher case reflect stronger demand and excellent condition without presenting either as a forecast.
Find the break-even fuel price
When one car costs more upfront, calculate the fuel price at which its cumulative fuel savings equal the extra net cost. First find the annual fuel-cost difference, then divide the additional purchase, financing and other ownership costs by the annual difference and by the number of ownership years. If the break-even price is above the high case you consider plausible, the efficient car does not pay back on fuel under your assumptions. If it is below the low case, fuel savings are robust; if it lies between them, the choice is sensitive.
Interpret an unstable ranking correctly
If the preferred car changes when you move from one reasonable scenario to another, there is no single objective winner. Report the range and identify which assumption causes the reversal. A slightly cheaper car with less impressive MPG may be the safer financial choice if it remains affordable across all scenarios; a more efficient car may be justified when it also meets your needs and remains competitive in low-fuel-price and low-resale cases.

An EPA 2019 review reported that recent panel studies found vehicle purchase prices reflected roughly 50% to 100% of future fuel expenses. Those findings assumed static consumer expectations about future gasoline prices and a 5% to 6% discount rate. They are study results under specified assumptions, not a guarantee that any particular seller has priced every dollar of your future fuel savings into today’s vehicle price. Apply a range of valuation assumptions consistently rather than assuming the market will fully reward efficiency.

Check a used vehicle before comparing its price
Condition can overwhelm a modest fuel-economy difference. Consumer.gov recommends a practical used-car review:
- Obtain the vehicle history report and check title, ownership, mileage and reported damage.
- Search for open recalls and confirm which recall repairs were completed.
- Review service and maintenance records, including major interval work.
- Test-drive in conditions that resemble your use, including stop-and-go traffic, highway speed, hills and cold starts when practical.
- Arrange an independent mechanic inspection before purchase. Ask for a written report and estimates for urgent and upcoming work.
Use the inspection to adjust repair and maintenance assumptions, not merely to negotiate the purchase price. A used car with a lower sticker price can have a higher net cost if it needs tires, brakes, suspension work or a major scheduled service soon after purchase.
Evaluate EVs and plug-in hybrids on actual charging access
EPA labels supply range and charging-time information, but they do not know whether you can charge at home, whether workplace charging is reliable or how much of your route is electric. Confirm the electrical equipment, installation cost, charging hours and public-charging availability before assigning an EV or plug-in hybrid an energy advantage.

For an EV, consider winter temperatures, highway speeds, payload and the need for occasional long trips. The relevant comparison is the energy cost and convenience you can achieve, not the maximum range printed on a label.
A repeatable decision process
- Write the requirements. Record capacity, route, climate, charging access, budget and ownership horizon.
- Select viable candidates. Keep model year, powertrain and condition details so the comparison is like-for-like.
- Capture official efficiency data. Save each exact EPA label’s MPG, range, charging time and emissions information.
- Measure your use. Estimate annual miles and city/highway mix from records rather than a generic driver profile.
- Price the energy. Use the DOE Vehicle Cost Calculator with your driving habits and a current local price, then rerun it at lower and higher prices.
- Assemble total cost. Add purchase, financing, insurance, taxes and fees, maintenance, repairs and depreciation; subtract expected resale proceeds.
- Set resale cases. Use current local values for comparable age, mileage and condition, then create lower and higher outcomes.
- Check sensitivity. Identify the fuel price or resale value at which the ranking changes.
- Validate used cars. Complete the history, recall, service, test-drive and independent-inspection checks before treating a used-car estimate as reliable.
- Choose the robust option. Prefer the vehicle that meets every practical requirement and remains financially acceptable across reasonable scenarios. If no option dominates, choose based on the risk you would rather bear: higher upfront cost, fuel-price exposure, repair uncertainty or resale uncertainty.
Common mistakes that produce bad comparisons
- Using the advertised best MPG: compare the exact EPA configuration and your city/highway use.
- Assuming today’s fuel price forever: show at least three price cases.
- Ignoring the sale date: depreciation depends on how long you keep the car and its condition at sale.
- Comparing sticker prices only: financing, insurance, fees, maintenance and repairs can reverse the result.
- Trusting a calculator’s output as a forecast: calculators process inputs; they do not know future prices, repairs or resale markets.
- Using a national resale assumption for a local purchase: values vary by region, trim, mileage, color, condition and demand.
- Skipping a used-car inspection: an efficient car with hidden mechanical work may cost more overall.
- Overlooking charging reality: an EV or plug-in hybrid only delivers its expected energy pattern when charging fits your routine.
- Forcing a winner: when reasonable assumptions change the ranking, present the choice as sensitive rather than claiming certainty.
Make the final choice under uncertainty
The strongest decision is not the car with the highest MPG or the most optimistic resale estimate. It is the vehicle that satisfies your practical needs and has an acceptable net ownership cost when you vary fuel prices and resale values independently. Use official EPA information for comparable efficiency, the DOE calculator to model your driving, a complete ownership-cost accounting, and a documented inspection for any used candidate. Update local prices, insurance quotes and valuations immediately before buying, because those inputs—not a generic national average—determine your result.
