There is no single best follow drone for every activity. For fast cycling or snow sports, HOVERAir’s X1 PRO and X1 PROMAX are the more relevant candidates because the manufacturer publishes a 42 km/h (26 mph) maximum auto-follow speed. For simple, lightweight filming with palm takeoff and landing, DJI Neo is easier to carry and launch, but its Follow Me mode is limited to 8 m/s and the aircraft has no obstacle sensing. Those are manufacturer specifications from different test conditions, not a controlled head-to-head test.
Your decision should come down to four questions: how fast you move, whether the route contains obstacles, what camera output you need, and how much manual control you want when the drone loses you. Every follow mode still requires supervision, an appropriate flight area, and compliance with local drone and privacy rules.
Quick picks by use case
| Use case | Most relevant option | Why it fits | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fast cycling or dynamic snow sports | HOVERAir X1 PRO or X1 PROMAX | HOVERAir lists a 42 km/h (26 mph) maximum auto-follow speed and activity-specific bike and snow-sport modes. | The 42 km/h figure is a manufacturer maximum measured in a windless test; it is not an independent real-world result. |
| Casual hiking, travel clips, and quick solo shots | DJI Neo | Approximately 135 g, palm takeoff and landing, Follow Me, and additional intelligent modes. | DJI states an 8 m/s maximum horizontal speed in Follow Me and no obstacle sensing. |
| Obstacle-rich routes | Whichever model has verified sensing for your exact configuration | Sensor behavior matters more than a headline follow-speed number when trees, poles, rocks, or people are nearby. | Do not assume any follow mode will avoid every obstacle or maintain lock through occlusion. |
| Highest-confidence camera choice | Compare the current model specifications directly | TechRadar describes X1 Pro as a 4K drone, while the available Neo material identifies it as a compact camera drone with intelligent modes. | The cited material does not establish a complete, controlled camera comparison, so verify resolution, frame rates, stabilization, and low-light performance before buying. |
What a follow drone actually does
A follow drone uses its camera, positioning systems, and software to keep a selected person in frame while the aircraft moves. You normally launch, select yourself as the subject, choose a follow direction or shot mode, and begin moving. The aircraft then adjusts its position to preserve a programmed distance and angle.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“Follow” does not mean the aircraft understands every part of the environment. It is tracking a visual subject while trying to satisfy movement instructions. A sharp turn, a tree passing between you and the camera, poor lighting, or another person with similar clothing can interrupt that process. The aircraft may slow, stop, hover, or require you to take control.

Follow systems also differ in how they move around you. HOVERAir describes rear, side, and front following, plus modes tuned for biking and snow sports. DJI Neo supports Follow Me and other intelligent modes; DJI notes that some modes require the app or additional accessories. Mode names are not interchangeable, so read the instructions for the exact model and configuration.
Speed: the numbers and what they mean
Speed is the most common buying trap. A listed maximum is measured under a particular mode and test setup, not a promise that the drone will keep you centered through every turn.
| Drone or mode | Published figure | Qualification | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| HOVERAir X1 PRO/PROMAX auto-follow | 42 km/h (26 mph) | HOVERAir manufacturer specification; speed test described as windless, starting at ground level and ascending to 1.5 m. | Relevant for faster activities, but wind, acceleration, terrain, battery level, and mode choice can reduce usable speed. |
| DJI Neo Follow Me | 8 m/s maximum horizontal speed (about 28.8 km/h or 17.9 mph) | DJI Neo User Manual v1.2, 2024; this is the Follow Me mode limit. | Suitable for walking, many hikes, and moderate movement; less headroom for fast cycling. |
| DJI Neo overall aircraft speed | Not stated in the cited Follow Me evidence | Do not substitute a different flight-mode speed for the Follow Me limit. | Use the mode-specific number when deciding whether the aircraft can keep up. |
If you have seen the question “What speed does the NEO travel in Follow Me mode?” in community discussions, the answer supported by DJI’s manual is 8 m/s horizontally. A Reddit discussion illustrates that user concern, but it is not a representative performance test: the discussion is here.

Do not compare 42 km/h and 8 m/s as if they came from the same laboratory procedure. One is a HOVERAir auto-follow maximum under a stated windless setup; the other is DJI’s mode limit in a manual. They are useful buying signals, not a controlled race.
Obstacle sensing and the safety boundary
DJI Neo: no obstacle sensing
DJI’s Neo User Manual v1.2 states: “DJI Neo does not support obstacle sensing.” That limitation belongs next to every recommendation of Neo. The drone cannot be expected to detect and avoid a tree, cable, sign, wall, or person automatically.
DJI recommends visual line of sight and an open, unobstructed environment with sufficient lighting. If you leave the camera’s field of view, DJI says Neo can hover after losing the subject. Hovering is a loss-of-track response, not a collision-avoidance system; you must be ready to stop, land, or take manual control.

HOVERAir models: verify the exact sensor configuration
HOVERAir’s comparison material lists detection and sensor features by model. Check the exact X1 PRO or PROMAX column, firmware notes, and operating instructions before assuming a sensor can detect an obstacle from every direction or during every mode. Sensor presence does not guarantee safe flight through branches, crowds, low light, snow spray, or rapidly changing backgrounds.
Why follow mode cannot replace supervision
- Keep the aircraft within visual range and maintain a clear area before launching.
- Walk or ride a route first when possible; identify wires, branches, cliffs, traffic, spectators, and changing elevation.
- Leave extra lateral and vertical clearance rather than flying at the minimum distance that keeps you in frame.
- Stop the mode and take control when the subject is partly hidden, lighting changes abruptly, or another person enters the flight path.
- Follow the aviation, privacy, and property rules that apply where you fly. The requirements vary by jurisdiction, so do not treat a product manual as a substitute for local law.
Choosing by activity
Cycling
For road or trail cycling, start with the pace you actually ride rather than the drone’s maximum headline speed. HOVERAir’s published 42 km/h auto-follow figure gives the PRO and PROMAX more stated headroom than Neo’s 8 m/s Follow Me limit. HOVERAir also describes bike-specific modes, including dynamic following and smoother video options.
Speed alone does not make a drone suitable for a trail. A route with overhanging branches, narrow turns, or other riders demands more clearance and more active supervision. Test the mode at low speed in an open area, then increase pace only after you know how it brakes, turns, and behaves when you briefly leave the frame.
Hiking and walking
Walking and hiking usually place less demand on top speed, making Neo’s compact size and palm launch attractive. Its approximately 135 g weight is easier to carry between shots, and palm takeoff and landing reduce the setup needed for a short clip.
Hiking environments can still be difficult for tracking. Forest shade, bright sky behind the subject, switchbacks, and rocks that rise into the flight path can cause the subject to disappear or create an obstacle risk. Choose open sections, keep the route visible, and avoid relying on automatic following around blind corners.
Snow sports
HOVERAir says its activity-specific modes include snow-sport options. The company describes some as dynamic following and others as smoother video, which lets you prioritize speed or steadier footage depending on the run. These are manufacturer descriptions, not comparative third-party tests.

Snow reflects light, can obscure contrast, and may produce spray that interferes with cameras or sensors. Cold conditions can also reduce practical battery endurance. Keep the aircraft close enough to monitor, plan a recovery point, and stop if visibility or control becomes uncertain.
Travel and vlogging
Travel filming favors low carrying weight, simple launch, and predictable setup. Neo’s palm-launch design and compact approximately 135 g body suit a quick establishing shot or a short walk-and-talk sequence. You still need a legal flight location, permission where required, and enough open space to launch safely.
HOVERAir’s rear, side, and front following descriptions may be useful when you want several perspectives without a pilot. Compare the available modes with the story you are filming, and confirm whether a mode is intended for dynamic movement or smoother footage.

Family and activity footage
Automated filming can help when nobody is available to hold a camera, but family locations add people who may not understand the aircraft’s path. Keep bystanders outside the operating area, explain what the drone will do, and avoid flying near anyone who has not agreed to be recorded. A subject-following feature does not remove privacy responsibilities or the need to supervise the aircraft.
Camera output and control options
Follow performance is only half of the result. Before choosing, check the exact camera resolution, frame rates, stabilization method, vertical or horizontal capture options, storage workflow, and performance in the light where you will film.
TechRadar’s buying-guide assessment characterizes HOVERAir X1 Pro as a 4K drone. That is a useful indication, but it is not a full image-quality ranking. The available evidence does not provide a controlled comparison of X1 Pro, X1 PROMAX, and Neo in dynamic range, motion rendering, stabilization, or low-light scenes. Verify current official specifications and independent tests for those details.

Neo is controlled through its onboard mode button and supported app workflows, with some intelligent modes requiring the app or accessories. HOVERAir’s product-specific controls and mode availability should be checked for the exact model and package. A drone that launches easily can still require practice to stop a mode, change direction, or recover from a lost subject.

HOVERAir lists a maximum flight time of 16 minutes for the PRO/PROMAX comparison. Treat that as a stated maximum, not the amount of usable footage you will always obtain. Wind, repeated acceleration, cold weather, safety margins, hovering while you frame a shot, and the return or landing process all consume time.
No equivalent Neo flight-time figure is established in the cited material here, so do not fill that gap with an estimate from another model or flight mode. If endurance matters, check the current Neo specification for the exact battery and conditions, then plan around a conservative reserve rather than flying until the battery is nearly empty.
A practical buying checklist
- Measure your real activity speed. Note your normal cycling, running, skiing, or walking pace and leave margin for wind and turns. Use the mode-specific follow limit, not the aircraft’s fastest manual-flight number.
- Map the environment. List trees, wires, poles, cliffs, traffic, buildings, crowds, reflective snow, and places where you will disappear behind a bend.
- Choose the control style. Pick palm launch and simple automated shots if setup time matters; choose a package with the controller or app capability you need if you expect manual recovery or more precise framing.
- Verify sensing for the exact model. Neo has no obstacle sensing. For HOVERAir, read the model-specific detection and sensor description rather than assuming PRO and PROMAX behave identically.
- Check camera requirements. Confirm resolution, frame rates, stabilization, aspect ratio, storage, and whether the mode you want supports the camera setting.
- Check weight and transport. Neo is approximately 135 g according to DJI’s official information. Weight can affect how you carry the drone and which local rules may apply, but local regulations must be checked separately.
- Confirm package contents. DJI lists controller, battery, and ND-filter categories for Neo. SKU compatibility and what is included can change, so verify the exact bundle at purchase time.
- Plan battery rotation. Treat maximum flight time as a ceiling, reserve power for landing, and carry charged spares only when they are approved for the exact aircraft and transported according to local rules.
Safe first-flight procedure
- Update the aircraft, app, and any controller according to the manufacturer’s current instructions.
- Charge the aircraft and confirm the battery is seated correctly; inspect propellers, guards, camera glass, and vents.
- Select a large, open, well-lit area with no people inside the planned flight path.
- Perform a low, short hover while you remain stationary. Confirm that video, subject selection, and the stop or landing control work before enabling Follow.
- Start with the slowest or smoothest available mode. Walk a straight line and watch how the aircraft maintains distance.
- Test a gentle change of direction, then stop the mode deliberately. Do not begin with a forest trail, crowded park, steep slope, or high-speed run.
- Repeat the test with the camera pointed as you intend to film. If you leave the frame, observe whether the drone hovers, slows, or requires another action.
- Only after these checks should you increase speed or use a more dynamic activity mode.
Troubleshooting common follow-mode problems
The drone cannot keep up
Check that you are using the correct follow mode and compare your pace with its published mode limit. Neo’s 8 m/s Follow Me ceiling leaves less margin for fast cycling than HOVERAir’s stated 42 km/h auto-follow maximum. Reduce speed, use a smoother mode, shorten the camera distance, or choose a model intended for faster activity.
The aircraft loses you
Return to an open, well-lit area and keep clothing and background visually distinct. Avoid passing behind trees, walls, terrain, or other people. On Neo, DJI says the aircraft may hover after the subject leaves the field of view; be ready to take control rather than assuming it will search safely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe footage is jerky
Acceleration, abrupt turns, wind, and a dynamic follow preset can all produce rougher footage. Try the smoother activity option where available, reduce speed, use wider turns, and leave more room around the subject so the aircraft does not make constant corrections.

You are worried about obstacles
Do not fly an obstacle-rich route with Neo expecting automatic avoidance; DJI explicitly says it has no obstacle sensing. For HOVERAir, verify the exact sensor behavior and still maintain clearance. The safest fix is often changing the route to an open area, not changing one setting.
The battery ends sooner than expected
Maximum flight time is measured under favorable conditions. Wind, cold, repeated climbs, hovering, and conservative landing reserves reduce filming time. Start with a shorter route, land with reserve power, and use additional compatible batteries only after confirming the correct model and charging procedure.
Which drone should you buy?
Choose DJI Neo when your priority is a compact, approximately 135 g camera drone that can launch from your palm for walks, hikes, travel clips, and uncomplicated solo shots. Accept the 8 m/s Follow Me limit and the complete absence of obstacle sensing, and plan flights in open, adequately lit areas.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose HOVERAir X1 PRO or X1 PROMAX when your activity is faster or you specifically want the company’s bike and snow-sport modes, rear/side/front following descriptions, and published 42 km/h auto-follow maximum. Treat 42 km/h and 16 minutes as manufacturer figures under stated conditions, not guaranteed filming performance.
Choose neither on specifications alone if your route is crowded, full of branches or cables, poorly lit, or likely to hide the subject. In those situations, a slower supervised flight in an open location—or a conventional camera operated by another person—may produce safer and more reliable footage.
Bottom line
The best follow drone is the one whose mode limit, sensing, camera, and control method match your activity. HOVERAir’s PRO and PROMAX have the stronger published speed case for dynamic sports, while DJI Neo is the simpler lightweight option for casual filming. Neither choice makes autonomous flight hands-off: maintain visual awareness, test the behavior before filming, leave generous clearance, and follow the rules that apply at your location.
