The best foldable phone depends first on its shape. Choose a book-style foldable if you want a tablet-sized workspace for documents, two-app multitasking, and video. Choose a flip-style foldable if a small folded footprint and quick one-handed use matter more. After that decision, compare the inner and cover screens, hinge and water-resistance claims, battery results measured with the same method, and repair access for the exact model in your country.

Foldables involve more moving and flexible parts than conventional phones, so a good purchase is not based on display size alone. Use the process below to match the design to your habits and to check the ownership risks before paying.

Start with the form factor

There are two fundamentally different foldable experiences. A book-style model opens horizontally into a tablet-like surface. A flip-style model folds vertically, keeping the phone short enough for a small pocket or bag. Neither shape is universally better; each solves a different problem.

Form factor What it is best at What to check before buying
Book-style Reading documents, side-by-side apps, spreadsheets, drawing, and large-screen video Open-screen ergonomics, weight in one hand, cover-screen width, app continuity, and hinge protection
Flip-style Compact carrying, quick replies, notifications, selfies, and one-handed tasks Whether the cover screen can run your essential apps, typing comfort when closed, battery capacity, and the size of the inner display when opened

Write down the tasks you perform most often before looking at model names. If you regularly read long PDFs or keep two apps visible, the inner display is the main reason to accept a thicker folded device. If your priority is fitting a phone into a small pocket, the folded dimensions and useful cover screen matter more than the largest unfolded panel.

Book-style examples

Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Fold7 with an 8.0-inch main display and a 6.5-inch cover display, both supporting a 1–120 Hz refresh range. Samsung positions this shape for productivity and entertainment. Those diagonal measurements are manufacturer specifications; they do not tell you how much area is available after accounting for aspect ratio, rounded corners, or the crease.

Flip-style examples

Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Flip7 with a 6.9-inch main display and a 4.1-inch cover display, also with a 1–120 Hz refresh range. The cover panel can reduce how often you open the phone, but only if it supports the notifications, calls, authentication, music controls, and apps you actually use. A large cover-screen number is not a substitute for checking those workflows in person.

Evaluate both screens, not just the unfolded one

A foldable is effectively two interfaces joined by software. Test the inner and outer screens as a pair.

Check the cover screen against your real routine

  • Read and reply to a message without opening the phone.
  • Authenticate for a payment or password manager.
  • Control music, navigation, and timers.
  • Use the camera preview and trigger a selfie.
  • Open the apps you use for work, travel, or two-factor codes.

If a task repeatedly forces you to unfold the device, the cover screen may be functioning only as a notification window. That can still be useful, but it changes the value of a flip model and adds hinge cycles to ordinary interactions.

Assess the inner screen for comfort

On a store demo or returnable purchase, read a page of text, type a paragraph, scroll a long list, and watch a 16:9 video. Look for letterboxing, awkward keyboard placement, reflections, and whether your thumbs can reach the middle when holding the phone with one hand. A diagonal measurement cannot capture these ergonomic differences.

Verify app continuity

Open an app on the cover screen, unfold the phone, and then fold it again. Some software resumes at the same position; some reloads; some presents a different layout. Confirm behavior for your calendar, maps, banking app, password manager, camera, and office tools. Also check whether two-app or three-app layouts are supported and whether a video call keeps the camera and microphone state when you change screens.

Compare screen specifications that are genuinely comparable

For each candidate, record inner and outer dimensions, aspect ratios, brightness measured under the same conditions, crease visibility, touch response, pen support, and the maker’s protection terms. The cited material does not provide independent cross-model measurements for all of those attributes, so do not treat a manufacturer’s peak-brightness figure or a reviewer’s subjective crease description as a universal ranking.

Read hinge and protection claims literally

The hinge controls how the phone feels every day, but most longevity figures are manufacturer claims rather than independently observed failure rates. Compare the claim, the test conditions, and the warranty language separately.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7

Samsung lists an IP48 rating for both the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7. Samsung says its laboratory test submerges the phones in up to 1.5 metres of freshwater for up to 30 minutes. The company specifically advises against beach or pool use. IP48 therefore should not be read as protection from every kind of dust, sand, impact, salt water, chlorinated water, or liquid exposure after the phone has been dropped or repaired.

Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold

In its announcement published August 20, 2025, Google says the Pixel 10 Pro Fold uses a gearless hinge, is twice as durable as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold hinge, and can handle more than 10 years of folding. Google also lists IP68 protection and describes a flexible display made with ultra-thin glass and two layers of anti-impact film. These are Google’s specifications and durability claims, not an independent decade-long test or a promise that every individual unit will last that long.

Google’s engineering article published October 9, 2025, quotes Sangsoo, identified there as a member of the Pixel design team, saying, “The biggest change is that this is what we call a gearless hinge — which literally means it doesn’t have any gears.” The design description explains construction; it does not establish that the hinge is objectively more reliable than every competing design.

Questions to ask about any hinge

  • Does the warranty cover hinge stiffness, misalignment, or debris-related damage?
  • Are sand, dust, moisture, or impact listed as exclusions?
  • Is the inner display covered separately from the rest of the phone?
  • Can an authorized service centre inspect the hinge in your area?
  • Will opening the device for repair affect a stated water-resistance rating?

Do not deliberately test a phone in water to verify its rating. Laboratory ingress tests use controlled freshwater, depth, time, and an undamaged device. Real-world exposure changes after wear, impact, adhesive ageing, or a previous repair.

Compare battery evidence using one method

Battery capacity by itself is a poor predictor of endurance. Screen brightness, cellular reception, refresh rate, camera use, processor efficiency, software, and background synchronization all change consumption. Keep three kinds of evidence separate: a capacity specification, a maker’s runtime statement, and an independent test with a published protocol.

Manufacturer statements

Google says the Pixel 10 Pro Fold delivers “up to 30+ hours” of battery life. “Up to” describes Google’s test conditions and usage model; it is not directly comparable with another company’s number unless the methods match. The cited material does not establish equivalent capacity or runtime claims for every current foldable.

Independent cellular browsing test

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison used continuous cellular web browsing with the display set to 150 nits. Its reported results are useful for comparing the two phones within that protocol:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Phone Tom’s Guide result Test context
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 10 hours 55 minutes Cellular web browsing; 150-nit display setting
Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold 12 hours 16 minutes Cellular web browsing; 150-nit display setting

These times are not promises of ordinary mixed-use runtime. A commuter who spends the day on a weak 5G signal, records video, uses GPS, and keeps the inner display bright will get a different result from someone mostly reading on Wi-Fi.

Check charging as part of battery life

  • Confirm wired charging speed and whether the required charger is included.
  • Check wireless-charging support and alignment with your existing pad.
  • Verify compatibility with your car charger, power bank, and USB-C cables.
  • Check whether regional variants use different radios or charging specifications.
  • Look for battery-protection settings that limit overnight charging if you keep the phone plugged in.

When two phones meet your endurance target, choose the one that fits your current charging accessories and travel habits. A slightly shorter test result can be less inconvenient if your charger, case, and power bank already work with it.

Make repairability a buying requirement

Repairability is practical and market-specific. A phone may be technically repairable but still costly or inconvenient if the nearest authorized centre is far away, inner-screen parts are scarce, or a repair takes weeks. Search the manufacturer’s support system for the exact model number and your country before ordering.

Verify these details

  1. Enter the model and region on the maker’s official support page.
  2. Check whether authorized providers replace the inner display, cover display, hinge, battery, and charging port.
  3. Record the out-of-warranty price for each part, including labour and shipping.
  4. Confirm service locations, estimated turnaround, and whether loaner phones are offered.
  5. Read warranty exclusions for drops, liquid, dust, cosmetic damage, and unauthorized opening.
  6. Ask whether a repaired phone retains any ingress-protection coverage.
  7. Check how long genuine parts remain available after the model leaves retail sale.

A documented DIY example

Motorola’s support page for the Razr Fold (2026) says technically capable owners can order a repair kit through iFixit. The kits commonly cover screen or battery work and include tools and genuine Motorola parts; difficulty varies by model and damage. This demonstrates that a repair-kit route exists for that specific product. It does not prove that other foldables have the same parts supply, instructions, or risk level, and a DIY opening can affect warranty or water-resistance coverage.

Estimate ownership cost realistically

Do not treat a replaceable battery, a repair video, or a parts listing as proof that a repair is affordable. Foldable inner displays and hinges are specialized assemblies. Compare the manufacturer’s repair quote with the phone’s current value, insurance deductible, and the cost of a temporary replacement. If a screen repair approaches the price of a new phone, an extended warranty or accidental-damage plan may change the calculation—but only after you read its exclusions and claim limits.

Use a priority-based comparison

Choose book-style when the inner screen will replace a tablet task

Select a book-style model when you will regularly edit documents, keep a reference app beside a messaging app, annotate PDFs, or watch video on the larger panel. Give extra weight to cover-screen width and one-handed comfort if you still expect to use the phone closed for calls and quick replies.

Choose flip-style when pocketability changes your behavior

Select a flip-style model when carrying comfort, compact storage, and quick cover-screen interactions outweigh the need for a large workspace. Test typing and authentication on the cover screen; those small interactions determine whether the design saves time or merely adds an extra opening step.

Prioritize protection when your environment is harsh

For construction sites, beaches, pools, dusty workshops, or frequent outdoor use, read the ingress rating and handling guidance conservatively. IP numbers describe specified laboratory conditions, not immunity to grit, salt, chlorine, impact, or wear. A conventional slab phone may be the safer choice if you cannot keep a foldable clean and dry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prioritize battery evidence when you travel

Use a shared independent test, then check charging compatibility and access to replacement batteries or service in the places you visit. Do not compare a maker’s “up to” figure with a reviewer’s controlled test as if they were the same measurement.

A practical purchase checklist

  1. Decide whether the phone will be open or closed for most of your day.
  2. List five tasks that must work on the cover screen and test them on each flip or book-style candidate.
  3. Use the inner display for reading, typing, video, and multitasking; note glare, crease visibility, and hand fatigue.
  4. Record each model’s stated IP rating, hinge claim, and the exact laboratory conditions behind those statements.
  5. Compare battery results that use the same published protocol, such as Tom’s Guide’s 150-nit cellular browsing test.
  6. Check wired and wireless charging against the accessories you already own.
  7. Look up repair locations, inner-screen and hinge pricing, parts availability, turnaround, and warranty exclusions for your market.
  8. Confirm storage, cellular bands, software-support terms, return period, and insurance options for the exact regional configuration.
  9. During the return window, test the hinge for smooth alignment, inspect both displays for defects, and verify every essential app on both screens.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying by unfolded screen size alone: a large panel is useful only if its aspect ratio, keyboard, and app layouts suit your work.
  • Treating IP48 or IP68 as unrestricted waterproofing: ratings are controlled tests and do not cover every liquid, particle, or damaged-phone scenario.
  • Reading a hinge-cycle claim as a guarantee: Google’s “over 10 years” statement is a manufacturer claim, not an individual-phone warranty.
  • Comparing battery numbers with different methods: a maker’s “up to” runtime and a 150-nit cellular browsing result measure different things.
  • Assuming repair kits make repairs easy: parts, tools, skill, adhesive, calibration, and warranty consequences all matter.
  • Ignoring the local market: service networks, prices, parts, carrier bands, and warranty terms vary by country and configuration.

The decision in one sentence

Choose the form factor that matches your daily interaction, verify that both screens support your essential tasks, treat hinge and ingress figures as qualified claims, compare battery tests made with the same protocol, and confirm local repair options before purchase. That process produces a defensible choice even when no single foldable is best for every buyer.
