Choose a face sunscreen in this order: broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher, and water resistance when you will swim or sweat. Then select a texture and finish that feel comfortable enough for you to apply the full amount and reapply. Creams generally suit dry skin, gels are often more comfortable for oily skin, and mineral formulas containing zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide are an option for sensitive skin. Tinted formulas with iron oxide can add visible-light protection and may reduce white cast.
These preferences improve consistency, but they do not replace the protection claims or correct application. A sunscreen labeled “sensitive,” “sport,” or “reef safe” is not automatically better; read the Drug Facts panel and active ingredients.
The short answer: choose protection first, then skin-type preferences
For everyday facial use, start with a product labeled broad spectrum and SPF 30 or higher. Broad spectrum means the sunscreen is tested for protection against both UVA and UVB radiation. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) also recommends water resistance, particularly if you swim or sweat. In U.S. labeling, a water-resistance claim must specify either 40 or 80 minutes under swimming or sweating conditions.
After those minimums, choose the formula you are most likely to use correctly:

| Skin concern or preference | Starting texture or formula | Label cues | What to check in practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dry skin | Cream or moisturizing formula | Moisturizing claims; broad-spectrum SPF 30+ | It should feel comfortable without leaving tightness or excessive flaking. |
| Oily or acne-prone skin | Gel or lightweight formula | “Non-comedogenic” or “won’t clog pores” | These terms are selection cues, not a guarantee that you will never break out. |
| Sensitive skin | Mineral sunscreen | Zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide among the active ingredients | “Sensitive skin” on the front label is not a guarantee; patch-test and monitor your own tolerance. |
| Dark spots or melasma | Tinted sunscreen | Iron oxide plus broad-spectrum SPF 30+ | Tint can add visible-light protection and reduce white cast, but it does not replace SPF or broad-spectrum coverage. |
Use the AAD’s sunscreen-selection guidance as a check against marketing language.
Why daily facial sunscreen matters
Ultraviolet exposure contributes to sunburn, premature skin aging and skin cancer. The AAD’s Practice Safe Sun page, updated April 11, 2024, states that about one in five Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime. That is a U.S. population-level lifetime-risk estimate, not a prediction of what will happen to any one person.
Sunscreen is one part of a broader strategy. The AAD summarizes the basic requirement this way: “To all skin not covered by clothing, apply a sunscreen that offers:” broad-spectrum protection, water resistance and SPF 30 or higher. Shade, protective clothing (including UPF-rated clothing), a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses add protection that sunscreen alone cannot provide.

Broad spectrum covers UVA and UVB
UVB is closely associated with sunburn, while UVA also reaches deeper into skin and contributes to long-term damage. A broad-spectrum claim means the product has been tested for UVA protection relative to its UVB protection under U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements. A high SPF number without “broad spectrum” does not tell you that UVA protection is included.
AAD label guidance explains that SPF 30 filters 97% of UVB rays. SPF is not a measure of how long you can stay outside without reapplying, and it does not eliminate the need for shade or clothing.
SPF 30 is the floor for this decision
Choose SPF 30 or higher for your face. A higher number does not compensate for applying too little or failing to reapply. The amount, coverage and reapplication schedule matter as much as the number printed on the front.
Understand water-resistance times
In the United States, a water-resistant sunscreen must state “40 minutes” or “80 minutes” for swimming or sweating. The number is the tested duration under those conditions, not an all-day promise. The FDA does not permit “waterproof” or “sweatproof” claims. “Sunblock” also overstates what sunscreen can do, so it is not an FDA-permitted effectiveness claim.

Even with a water-resistant product, AAD recommends reapplying every two hours while outdoors and after swimming, sweating or toweling. Follow the specific product’s directions if they call for more frequent use.
Match the formula to your skin type
Dry skin: prioritize a comfortable cream
Dry skin often feels more comfortable with a cream or moisturizing sunscreen. Creams are also the AAD’s preferred format for dry skin and facial application. Look for the same broad-spectrum SPF 30-or-higher protection as everyone else, then assess whether the formula reduces the tight, rough feeling that can make you skip sunscreen.
- Apply your regular moisturizer first if you need it, then apply sunscreen as the final step of your morning skin-care routine.
- Allow each layer to settle enough to avoid dragging or pilling, while still applying sunscreen before going outdoors.
- If a cream leaves a finish you dislike, try a different cream texture rather than using less product.
Do not treat a moisturizing claim as evidence of UVA protection. Confirm broad-spectrum labeling separately.
Oily or acne-prone skin: look for a light gel and non-comedogenic wording
AAD suggests gels for oily complexions. A gel or other lightweight formula may feel less greasy and make it easier to apply the recommended amount. For acne-prone skin, look for “non-comedogenic” or “won’t clog pores.” Those phrases are useful product-selection cues, but they cannot guarantee that a particular formula will never trigger breakouts for you.

- Test it on a small area for several days before using it over your entire face, especially if you have reacted to products before.
- Do not trade away broad-spectrum SPF 30-or-higher protection for a lighter feel; instead, keep trying textures until you can use enough.
“Oil-free,” “mattifying” and similar cosmetic terms can describe feel, but they are not substitutes for the Drug Facts panel’s protection claims.
Sensitive skin: consider mineral active ingredients
For sensitive skin, AAD recommends mineral sunscreen as an option. In the Drug Facts panel, look for zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide among the active ingredients. A mineral formula may still sting, feel heavy or leave a cast on an individual’s skin, so “sensitive skin” on a package is not a guarantee of tolerance.
- Patch-test a small area before full-face use, particularly around the eyes where stinging is especially disruptive.
- Stop using a product that causes persistent burning, swelling or a rash.
- If reactions continue across several products, ask a qualified dermatology professional for help identifying the trigger.
Mineral actives are a choice for sensitive skin, not a universal requirement. The decisive protection checks remain broad spectrum and SPF 30 or higher.

Dark spots and melasma: add visible-light protection with tint
Visible light can be relevant to dark spots and melasma. AAD recommends a tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide for added visible-light protection. Tint may also reduce the white cast that some sunscreen formulas leave on skin. It does not replace SPF, broad-spectrum coverage or water resistance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the active-ingredient list for iron oxide rather than assuming every product called “tinted” offers the same visible-light protection. Choose a shade that you will wear across the face and reapply; an attractive color that you use sparingly is less useful than a less glamorous formula applied correctly.
Mineral, tinted and “sensitive” labels: how to judge them
Use the Drug Facts panel, not front-label adjectives
The FDA’s label guidance and AAD recommendations point to three places to inspect:
- Active ingredients: identify zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide if you want a mineral option, and look for iron oxide when visible-light protection is a priority.
- SPF and broad-spectrum statement: verify SPF 30 or higher and the words “broad spectrum.”
- Water-resistance statement: if you will swim or sweat, check whether the label specifies 40 or 80 minutes.
Marketing words such as “sport,” “sensitive,” “natural,” “reef safe,” “waterproof” or “sunblock” do not replace these checks. “Waterproof” and “sweatproof” are not permitted claims, and “sunblock” exaggerates the level of protection sunscreen can provide.
Texture is a compliance issue, not just a beauty preference
A sunscreen that pills under makeup, stings your eyes or feels unbearably greasy can lead you to apply too little or skip reapplication. Treat texture, finish and cast as practical criteria after protection. If two products meet the same protection requirements, the one you can apply generously and refresh is the better choice for your routine.

How much sunscreen to apply to your face
AAD advises at least one teaspoon for the face. The same guidance describes this as approximately the amount needed to cover the length of your index and middle fingers. The face-only amount is larger than many people intuitively use, so measuring it once can help you understand the volume.
- Apply sunscreen before going outdoors, as the final step of your morning skin-care routine.
- Use at least the AAD-recommended face amount: one teaspoon, approximately the length of your index and middle fingers.
- Spread it evenly over the face and include commonly missed areas such as the hairline, ears and the front and sides of the neck when they are not covered by clothing.
- Give the product a moment to settle before adding makeup or putting on a mask, while still following the product’s directions for timing.
If you are using a separate sunscreen stick or powder for touch-ups, do not assume a few quick swipes deliver the same quantity as a cream or lotion. Use the product according to its directions and make sure the underlying coverage remains adequate.

When and how to reapply
Reapply every two hours while outdoors, even if your water-resistant sunscreen has stayed dry. Reapply sooner after swimming, sweating or toweling. Water resistance delays wash-off; it does not make the application permanent.
- Commuting or walking outdoors: follow the two-hour outdoor schedule and refresh after heavy sweating.
- Swimming or exercise: use the stated 40- or 80-minute water-resistance window, then reapply after leaving the water or drying off.
- Makeup: plan a method that lets you put on enough product. Reapplying a thin, invisible layer may look better but can leave coverage below the amount used in testing.
Use the product’s own directions when they are more specific. AAD’s application guidance provides the practical two-hour and post-water-activity schedule.
A simple shopping and comparison method
When comparing facial sunscreens, score them in this order rather than letting a cosmetic claim dominate:
- Protection: broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, and water resistance if your activities require it.
- Skin preference: cream or moisturizing feel for dry skin; gel and non-comedogenic wording for oily or acne-prone skin; mineral actives for a sensitive-skin option.
- Appearance and routine fit: tint and iron oxide for visible-light concerns, acceptable white cast, eye comfort and a texture that supports full application.
- Directions: face amount, water-resistance duration and any warnings in the Drug Facts panel.
| Question to ask | What a satisfactory answer looks like |
|---|---|
| Does it protect against both UVA and UVB? | The label says broad spectrum. |
| Is the SPF high enough? | SPF 30 or higher. |
| Will it hold up to water or sweat? | A 40- or 80-minute water-resistance statement, if needed. |
| Will it suit my skin’s feel? | Cream/moisturizing for dry skin, gel/lightweight for oily skin, or a mineral option for sensitive skin. |
| Do I need help with visible light or cast? | Tinted formula with iron oxide; still verify SPF and broad spectrum. |
| Can I use enough and reapply? | The finish and eye comfort make the AAD amount and two-hour schedule realistic. |
Do not rank products solely by a front-label adjective. A formula that sounds ideal but discourages adequate use is a poor practical match.

White cast
Try a tinted formula, particularly one containing iron oxide, or test a different texture. Tint may reduce visible residue but does not alter the need for broad-spectrum SPF 30-or-higher protection.
Pilling under moisturizer or makeup
Use thinner preceding skin-care layers, allow them to settle, and apply sunscreen without aggressive rubbing. If pilling persists, change the sunscreen texture rather than cutting the amount.
Greasy or heavy finish
For oily skin, test a gel or lightweight formula and look for non-comedogenic wording. Keep the protection claims constant while changing feel.

Stinging or redness
Stop the product if burning or a rash persists. A mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide is an AAD-supported option for sensitive skin. Patch-test any replacement and seek dermatology advice for continuing reactions.
Breakouts
Choose a product labeled non-comedogenic or “won’t clog pores,” introduce it alone and observe your skin. These labels reduce uncertainty but cannot promise that every individual will tolerate the formula.
Use sunscreen with other sun-protection measures
Sunscreen works best as part of a layered plan. Seek shade when possible, wear protective clothing or UPF-rated clothing, choose a wide-brimmed hat and use UV-protective sunglasses. Covering skin reduces the area that depends on perfect sunscreen application and reapplication.
The FDA’s consumer guidance, Tips to Stay Safe in the Sun: From Sunscreen to Sunglasses, also emphasizes combining sunscreen with these physical measures. The page was surfaced as published in September 2026; check it for current FDA consumer advice.
When professional advice is worthwhile
Persistent irritation, repeated acne flares, diagnosed melasma or another skin condition can make product selection more complicated than a label comparison. A dermatology consultation can help identify triggers and build a regimen that you can use consistently. Seek prompt medical attention for severe swelling, blistering or a rapidly changing skin lesion rather than trying additional sunscreens on your own.
Final checklist before you buy
- Broad-spectrum protection is stated.
- SPF is 30 or higher.
- Water resistance is specified when swimming or sweating is part of your day.
- The texture matches your skin preference: cream for dry skin, gel for oily skin or mineral actives for a sensitive-skin option.
- “Non-comedogenic” or “won’t clog pores” appears if clogged pores are a concern.
- Iron oxide appears in a tinted formula if visible-light protection for dark spots or melasma is important.
- You can apply at least one teaspoon to the face and reapply every two hours outdoors and after swimming, sweating or toweling.
That combination—verified protection, a tolerable texture and enough product used on schedule—is the most reliable way to choose a face sunscreen for your skin type.
