A practical production pattern is to package your application as a Docker image, run that image as a managed service on Google Cloud Run, and use Supabase for Postgres and related backend services. Each product has a separate job: Docker packages the app, Cloud Run operates the app service, and Supabase provides database-centered capabilities. This is an architecture pattern, not a guarantee of capacity or performance; the right setup depends on your workload, security needs, data requirements, and appetite for operational work.

How the three pieces fit together

Docker packages the application

A container is a portable unit for distributing and testing software. Docker can help make the application artifact repeatable across development, CI, staging, and production, but it does not choose or operate the production runtime. A container may still need environment-specific configuration to behave correctly in a particular runtime.

Cloud Run operates the application service

Google Cloud Run is a managed option for deploying an application as a service from a container image. Google also documents buildpacks for producing images from supported source code without a Dockerfile. For a service image on Cloud Run, the application must listen on the port supplied through the PORT environment variable.

Supabase supplies database-centered backend services

Supabase describes a project as services in front of a Postgres database. In this pattern, your application container contains your service logic, Cloud Run runs that service, and Supabase provides the database and related backend capabilities. Managed Supabase is a separate platform choice; it does not have to run inside Cloud Run, and Docker is not a prerequisite for using its managed platform.

File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

How to deploy a Docker app to Google Cloud and connect Supabase

  1. Build and test the application image

Create an image that packages the application and its runtime dependencies. Test the same artifact through your development and CI workflow where practical. Docker’s production Compose guidance notes that a Compose definition may be used in CI, staging, and production, but production configuration can require different ports and environment variables, no application-code bind mounts, and an appropriate restart policy.

  2. Store and deploy the image

Cloud Run deploys a container image; Google recommends Artifact Registry for storing images. Google documents that a deployed revision resolves a tag to an image digest, so that revision continues to serve the image selected at deployment rather than following later changes to the tag.

Access, back up, organize, and share data across Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, web browsers, and compatible smart TVs—ideal for creators and advanced home users working across multiple devices.
  3. Configure each environment deliberately

Set environment-specific configuration for development, staging, and production. Containerizing the app does not by itself solve secret management: decide how credentials are stored, granted to the service, rotated, and kept out of image layers and source control. The appropriate design depends on your application and security requirements.

  4. Manage schema changes as deployments

Use a controlled database migration workflow rather than relying on manual pushes from a developer machine. Supabase documents GitHub integration and CLI-based CI/CD, and recommends a controlled production deployment process for schema changes. Teams can maintain separate development, staging, preview, and production environments to validate changes before production.

  5. Review database access before release

Supabase’s production checklist calls for reviewing security issues and enabling row-level security with reasonable policies on tables. Decide which users and services may call each API, and test policies against both permitted and denied access cases. Enabling row-level security alone does not establish that authorization rules are correct.

  6. Prepare for operating the live system

Plan how you will observe service and database behavior, alert on failures, back up data, and recover to defined objectives. Load-test the application against its own traffic patterns and database queries; product-level descriptions of scalable infrastructure do not establish the capacity of your particular application.

Managed or self-hosted Supabase?

Choose based on who should own infrastructure operations, not on an assumption that one option is universally more scalable. Supabase identifies full data control, compliance requirements that prevent use of managed services, and isolated environments as reasons a team might self-host. Whether self-hosting satisfies a specific regulation or organizational requirement must be determined against that requirement.

Consideration Managed Supabase Self-hosted Supabase
Infrastructure ownership Supabase operates the managed platform; confirm the current service terms and operational responsibilities for your project. Your team operates the infrastructure and deployed services.
Data control or isolated environment Assess whether the managed service meets your location, control, and compliance requirements. Can suit needs for full data control or an isolated environment, subject to your implementation and compliance review.
Deployment starting point Use the managed project and its supported deployment workflows. Supabase recommends Docker Compose as the starting path for self-hosting.
Security and operations Review project security, access policies, migrations, backups, and your team’s responsibilities. In addition to application and database security, plan updates, resource sizing, HTTPS, monitoring, backups, and recovery.

Self-hosting is an operations commitment

Supabase’s self-hosting guide gives a minimum configuration of 4 GB RAM, 2 CPU cores, and 40 GB SSD, and recommends 8 GB or more RAM, 4 or more CPU cores, and 80 GB or more SSD for the full component stack. The guide does not state a publication year for these figures. They are Supabase’s stated self-hosting guidance, not requirements for managed Supabase, Cloud Run, or every production application. Removing unused services can reduce resource needs; enabling optional Logs & Analytics services increases them.

  • Secure private cloud - Enjoy 100% data ownership and multi-platform access from anywhere
  • Easy sharing and syncing - Safely access and share files and media from anywhere, and keep clients, colleagues and collaborators on the same page
  • Automated Backup Protection - Set-and-forget backups for Macs, PCs and mobile devices to multiple destinations including cloud and external drives
  • Home Security System - Record and monitor your property 24/7 with support for multiple IP cameras and remote viewing
  • 2-Year Warranty - Reliable hardware backed by Synology's expert customer support team and ongoing software updates

The local development stack is not hardened for production and must not be exposed to external traffic. For production self-hosting, Supabase says a valid TLS certificate and HTTPS are needed, especially when OAuth providers are used, and recommends a reverse proxy such as Caddy or Nginx in front of the API gateway.

What should determine the scaling design?

Cloud Run runs on Google’s scalable infrastructure, and Supabase offers guidance for expected load and resource allocation. Those statements do not establish that this combination will meet a particular latency, throughput, availability, or cost target. Validate the design against the app’s actual workload and operating constraints.

  • Workload shape: Check request concurrency, background work, long-running processes, and burst patterns. Confirm that the chosen runtime fits the app; detailed limits for every workload are not established here.
  • Operational ownership: Decide whether your team wants managed Cloud Run and managed Supabase or is equipped to operate more of the infrastructure itself.
  • Data and compliance: Verify required region, data control, retention, and applicable obligations for your own organization rather than assuming a platform choice meets them.
  • Database security: Review row-level security, service credentials, migration controls, and exposure of administrative interfaces.
  • Deployment and rollback: Version images, validate revisions and migrations in staging, plan migration order, and define how to recover if an application or schema change fails.
  • Observability and continuity: Choose how logs, metrics, traces, backups, alerts, incident response, and support will work for your service.

When this architecture is a sensible fit

This pattern is a reasonable starting point when you want a containerized application service on a managed Google Cloud runtime and a Postgres-centered backend from Supabase. It is less compelling if your workload requires a runtime behavior you have not verified Cloud Run supports, or if self-hosting adds operational duties your team cannot reliably cover. Treat deployment as a sequence of testable decisions: validate the runtime contract, secure and test data access, exercise migrations and rollback, and measure the system against your own service targets.
