The right dishwasher must pass two separate tests: it has to fit the installation opening, and it has to hold the kinds of loads your household actually produces. After fit and capacity, compare rack layout, soil-sensing or other cycle choices, programme duration, noise, and the water and energy figures on the label used in your market. US and EU labels use different units and assumptions, so compare models within the same system rather than treating every consumption number as interchangeable.
Start with the installation space, not the advertised capacity
A dishwasher can have an adequate place-setting rating and still be unsuitable if its cabinet opening, door clearance, connections, or installation type do not match your kitchen. Measure the available opening before comparing models.
Measure the opening
- Width: Measure at several points, because cabinets and flooring may not be perfectly parallel.
- Height: Measure from the finished floor to the underside of the counter or other fixed surface. Account for flooring that may be added later.
- Depth: Check the full depth available for the appliance and connections, not just the cabinet face.
- Door clearance: Confirm that the door can open without hitting an island, adjacent cabinet, appliance, or skirting.
There is no single worldwide dishwasher dimension or installation convention. Built-in and freestanding models can follow different requirements, and dimensions vary by model and market. Use the manufacturer’s installation specification for the exact opening, ventilation, plumbing, electrical connection, and hose-routing requirements. If a model is replacing an existing appliance, do not assume the old connections or mounting method will suit the new one.
Confirm the installation type
Identify whether you need a built-in unit secured under a counter or a freestanding unit with its own finished exterior. The product page and installation manual should state the appliance dimensions, required clearances, water inlet and drain arrangement, electrical requirements, and any supplied or optional parts. Verify those details for the country where the appliance will be installed; a model sold under the same name can have different specifications in another market.

Choose capacity from real loads
Physical fit and capacity answer different questions. Fit asks whether the machine can be installed. Capacity asks whether it can clean the household’s dishes without leaving awkward items for hand washing or forcing frequent half-loads.
Understand place-setting ratings
ENERGY STAR’s US guidance describes a standard-capacity dishwasher as one that holds more than eight place settings plus six serving pieces. A compact-capacity model holds fewer than that threshold. This is a US capacity description, not a universal width or installation standard.
A rated place setting is a standardized comparison, not a promise that every pan or oversized plate will fit. Your decision should reflect the objects you wash most often:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Count the plates, bowls, glasses, cups, cutlery, and serving pieces from a typical day or two.
- Note whether you regularly wash tall bottles, large pans, baking sheets, mixing bowls, or unusually wide plates.
- Allow for the fact that cookware consumes more space than a matching number of standard place settings.
Inspect the rack layout
Look at photographs, diagrams, and the manual rather than relying only on the capacity number. Check whether the upper rack can be adjusted, whether tines can be folded or repositioned, where cutlery is placed, and how much clearance remains when the upper rack is raised or lowered. Rack design is one of the design areas ENERGY STAR associates with improved resource use and performance. The useful question is not “How many settings does it claim?” but “Can my largest regular items be loaded without blocking the spray pattern or detergent dispenser?”
Standard versus compact
| Choice | Best fit | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Standard capacity | Households producing more than the compact threshold of dishes, or anyone who wants room for cookware | Needs an opening and rack arrangement that fit the kitchen and the household’s largest items |
| Compact capacity | Small kitchens, fewer daily dishes, or installations where a standard unit cannot fit | May require more cycles; ENERGY STAR cautions that smaller capacity can use more energy over time |
Do not select compact solely because it is smaller. If it causes extra cycles or leaves cookware to be washed separately, the apparent space saving may not match your routine.

Match wash programmes to the loads you actually run
Programme names differ by manufacturer, but the useful distinctions are consistent: ordinary loads, lightly soiled dishes, heavily soiled cookware, and loads where time matters. A machine with only one effective programme can force you to use more water, energy, or time than necessary for a particular load.
Auto-sensing or soil-sensor cycle
ENERGY STAR recommends an auto-sensing cycle. A soil sensor checks whether the wash water is dirty or clean and can adjust operation in a way that helps save water. This is useful when load conditions vary, because the machine does not have to assume that every load needs the same treatment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the manual to learn what the sensor changes on that model. “Automatic” does not mean every stage or option is identical across brands, and a sensor cannot compensate for overloading, blocked spray arms, or unsuitable detergent.
Eco programme
EU rules require an eco programme, and the EU energy label bases its resource figures on that programme. Eco is therefore the critical reference cycle when comparing EU models. It is often not the fastest option, so read the listed duration before deciding that a low consumption figure meets your scheduling needs.
Other useful cycle categories
- Normal or everyday: For a routine mixed load when you do not need the shortest or most intensive option.
- Light: For lightly soiled dishes that do not need a heavy treatment.
- Heavy: For baked-on food, pots, and pans, when the machine’s manual permits those items.
- Time-sensitive: A shorter programme can matter when dishes are needed soon, but compare its resource use separately from the eco figures.
If a model has no soil sensor, ENERGY STAR recommends having multiple cycle options so you can choose a programme suited to the load instead of using one setting for everything.

- 【Speed Program】- Only takes you 45 minutes to get all dishes cleaned, perfect for hurry-up situations, like holding a multi-round party. Accompanied with Energy Star compliant, water consumption can be as low as 2.77 gallons of water, which greatly saves your costs.
Compare duration as well as efficiency
A long eco cycle may use fewer resources than a short cycle while taking substantially longer. That is not a contradiction: efficiency and elapsed time measure different things. Treat the eco duration on the label as part of the buying decision, especially if you need dishes ready at a particular time or expect to run several loads in a day.
Read water and energy labels correctly
Use the label system for the market where the appliance will be sold. The same dishwasher cannot be compared fairly by taking a per-cycle value from one market and an annual estimate from another without converting the units and understanding the test assumptions.
EU label: compare the eco programme on like-for-like models
The EU dishwasher label uses efficiency classes from A through G. It reports:
| Label field | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Water consumption per eco cycle | The water used for one eco programme under the label test conditions |
| Energy consumption per 100 eco cycles | A standardized energy figure for 100 runs of the eco programme |
| Rated capacity | The number of place settings and serving pieces that can be cleaned, rinsed, and dried in one cycle when loaded according to supplier instructions |
| Eco-programme duration | How long the reference eco cycle takes |
| Noise emissions | The appliance’s reported noise level for comparison with other EU-labelled models |
| Efficiency class | The model’s position on the A-to-G scale under the EU label rules |
These values describe the eco programme, not every programme on the appliance. A heavy, rapid, or other cycle can have different water, energy, and duration characteristics. Compare two EU models by reading all the fields together: a lower water figure may come with a longer cycle, while a quieter model may have a different capacity or efficiency class.
US labels: ENERGY STAR and EnergyGuide answer different questions
ENERGY STAR qualification is a screening signal that a dishwasher meets the programme’s efficiency requirements. The current qualification criteria became effective July 19, 2023. The criteria set these ceilings:

- Slimline Design with Large Capacity : The Midea built-in dishwasher boasts a slim body that takes up minimal space and is easy to fit. It features a digital control panel with an LED display and has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate larger plates, pots, and pans up to 11 inches in height.
- 8 Place Settings Dishwasher : With dimensions of 22.6D x 17.6W x 32.4H with adjustable legs, this under sink dishwasher provides a spacious and flexible interior for maximum dishware loading.
- 6 programs+3 functions : The 18-inch dishwasher offers six programs, including Heavy, Normal, ECO, Delicate, Quick, and Rinse washing programs. It also features Heated Dry, Hi-Temp, and Sanitize functions that meet all your daily needs. Note: ONLY use detergent specially for dishwasher because regular liquid dish soap will cause dishwasher problems.
- Heated Dry : Smart dishwasher ensures the best drying performance. The extra drying function offers a thorough drying performance (except for the Rapid and Self-clean cycle) with no additional towel drying required.
- HI TEMP : The HYGIENE wash cycle maintains the water temperature at 136°F (58°C) max , which can tackle even the heaviest soiled dishes. It is also suitable for cleaning baby bottles and children's dinner sets.
| US category | Maximum annual energy | Maximum water per cycle |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 240 kWh per year | 3.2 gallons per cycle |
| Compact | 155 kWh per year | 2.0 gallons per cycle |
Those are qualification limits, not a prediction that every qualifying dishwasher will consume exactly those amounts. Actual use depends on the cycle selected, load size, settings, maintenance, and how often the machine runs.
The US EnergyGuide label estimates yearly electricity use and yearly energy cost. Its estimate combines annual energy consumption, an assumed number of cycles per week, and an average energy price. Use it to compare similar models under a common assumption, not as a forecast of your household bill. Your local electricity price, number of cycles, selected programmes, and operating habits can produce a different result.
Do not mix the systems without normalizing them
- EU water is shown per eco cycle; US figures may be stated as a water limit per cycle or an annual energy estimate.
- EU energy is shown per 100 eco cycles; EnergyGuide presents an annual estimate based on stated assumptions.
- Efficiency classes, qualification criteria, and test programmes are market-specific.
For a US purchase, compare EnergyGuide estimates and ENERGY STAR status among comparable US models. For an EU purchase, compare the A-to-G class and every eco-label field among models sold under the EU system.
A practical selection process
- Measure the opening. Record width, height, depth, door clearance, and any obstructions. Keep the measurements with the model’s installation drawing.
- Identify the installation type. Decide whether the opening requires a built-in or freestanding design, then verify plumbing and electrical requirements.
- Describe a typical load. Count the household’s everyday dishes and list the largest cookware and serving pieces.
- Shortlist capacity. Use the standard-versus-compact definition relevant to your market, but reject any model whose racks cannot accommodate your actual items.
- Check rack adjustability. Confirm upper-rack movement, foldable tines, cutlery placement, and clearance for tall items in the positions you will use.
- Check programme coverage. Look for an eco programme, an auto-sensing cycle or multiple soil-appropriate cycles, and options for ordinary, light, heavy, or time-sensitive loads as needed.
- Read the correct label. On EU models, record eco water, energy per 100 eco cycles, duration, capacity, noise, and class. On US models, record ENERGY STAR status and EnergyGuide annual estimates.
- Compare noise and timing. A quiet rating and a cycle duration can matter as much as the consumption figure in an open-plan kitchen or a household that runs the machine overnight.
- Verify the current installation specification. Before ordering, check the model’s latest manual, dimensions, connection requirements, service coverage, and availability in your country.
Operate the dishwasher so the comparison remains meaningful
Buying an efficient model is only part of the result. The European Commission’s consumer guidance recommends habits that reduce avoidable resource use and preserve cleaning performance.
Use the eco programme for suitable full loads
Run a full load, but do not overload it. Items should be positioned so water can reach their surfaces and the spray arms can rotate. An overloaded machine may clean poorly, causing a repeat cycle that erases the expected savings.
Best Value
- FRESH SCENT DISHWASHER PACS: Leaves dishes clean and smelling fresh after every cycle.
- 2-IN-1 GREASE-FIGHTING FORMULA: Combines powerful dishwasher detergent with built-in rinse aid to help break down grease and food residue for sparkling clean dishes.
- NO PRE-RINSE NEEDED: Designed to tackle tough food messes without pre-rinsing, saving time and water.
- POWERFUL CLEAN IN EVERY LOAD: Pacs dissolve during the wash cycle to help remove grease, stuck-on food, and everyday messes.
- EASY TO USE: No measuring and no mess. Simply place one pac into the dishwasher detergent dispenser and start the cycle.
Skip pre-rinsing
Scrape off substantial food, then load the dishes instead of rinsing them under running water. Modern programmes and detergents are designed to handle normal food residue; pre-rinsing adds water use without changing the dishwasher’s label rating.
Use the right detergent amount
Follow the detergent instructions for the product and the selected programme. More detergent is not automatically better, and too little can leave residue that leads to rewashing.
Maintain salt, rinse aid, and the machine
Where the appliance uses them, replenish regenerating salt and rinse aid as directed. Keep filters and spray areas maintained according to the manual. Maintenance affects cleaning and drying, so neglect can turn an efficient cycle into a second run.

- Choosing by width alone: Width does not establish height, depth, door clearance, connection compatibility, or capacity.
- Treating place settings as cookware capacity: A rating does not reveal whether your largest pan or plate fits. Inspect the rack layout.
- Comparing an eco figure with a rapid-cycle claim: EU label values are eco-programme values. Ask for the data for any other cycle you expect to use.
- Reading a US annual estimate as a personal bill: EnergyGuide uses standardized assumptions about cycles and electricity price. Replace those assumptions with your own when budgeting.
- Assuming a compact unit is always more economical: ENERGY STAR notes that its smaller capacity can lead to more energy use over time if you need extra loads.
- Ignoring programme length: A low-resource cycle may be long. Make sure its duration suits your schedule.
- Overlooking local specifications: Dimensions, installation conventions, labels, and model availability differ by market. Confirm the current local documentation before purchase.
Decision checklist
- Opening width, height, depth, and door clearance measured
- Built-in or freestanding installation identified
- Plumbing and electrical requirements checked against the installation manual
- Typical daily load and largest cookware listed
- Capacity rating checked without treating it as a guarantee for oversized items
- Rack layout, adjustable parts, and tall-item clearance inspected
- Eco programme available and its duration recorded
- Auto-sensing cycle or enough soil-specific programmes available
- Correct local label read: EU eco fields or US ENERGY STAR and EnergyGuide
- Noise, service coverage, current dimensions, and local availability verified
Bottom line: fit first, then capacity, cycles, and label figures
Choose the dishwasher that fits the measured opening and the installation requirements, then select the capacity and rack layout that match your real dishes and cookware. Prefer an eco programme plus either soil sensing or enough cycle choices for light, ordinary, heavy, and time-sensitive loads. Finally, compare water, energy, duration, and noise only within the label system used in your market. A full but not overloaded load, no pre-rinsing, correct detergent, and regular maintenance help the appliance deliver the efficiency its label promises.
