The best desktop AI agent is not the one with the strongest marketing claim. Choose the one whose data path, permission boundary, operating-system support, and task reliability match your actual work. Trace four separate questions: where inference runs, where files and screenshots go, where actions execute, and where credentials and transcripts are stored. A self-hosted gateway can still send traffic to an external model provider; a cloud agent can still reach a local folder; and a benchmark score is not a guarantee for your workflow.
What a desktop AI agent actually is
A desktop AI agent combines a language model with tools that can inspect files, use a browser, call applications, or operate a computer. “Desktop” describes the workflow and its access to your computer, not necessarily where the model or task runs.
Keep these properties separate when comparing products:
- Inference location: where the model turns your prompt and tool results into the next action.
- Data storage: where prompts, files, screenshots, transcripts, credentials, and tool output are retained.
- Task execution: where code or computer interactions occur—on your machine, in a provider’s cloud, or in a mixture of both.
- Control surface: which applications, folders, websites, accounts, and devices the agent can reach.
These distinctions determine both privacy and practical behavior. An agent may use a local model while sending messages through a connected chat platform. Conversely, an agent may run its reasoning and tools in the cloud while receiving narrowly approved access to a local folder through an open desktop application.

Start with a data-flow map, not a product label
Before installing anything, write down every object that could leave the computer and every system that can receive it. Include the initial prompt, attached files, screenshots, browser contents, application state, tool results, model requests, transcripts, and authentication tokens.
| Question | Why it matters | Evidence-based example |
|---|---|---|
| Where is inference performed? | Local inference can reduce provider exposure, but only for the traffic that actually uses the local model. | OpenClaw supports local models, yet its documentation says configured provider and chat-platform traffic goes to those services. |
| Where are tasks executed? | Cloud execution changes what must be uploaded and whether the computer must stay connected. | Claude Cowork executes tasks in an isolated Anthropic-server environment and reaches approved local resources through its desktop app. |
| What can the model see? | Screen access can expose unrelated messages, credentials, or confidential documents. | Claude Cowork’s computer-use flow takes screenshots and can see information visible on the screen. |
| Where are secrets and history stored? | A stolen state directory or account can expose long-lived access and past work. | OpenClaw’s state can contain channel credentials, model-auth data, session transcripts, and tool output. |
OpenClaw: self-hosted does not mean device-only
OpenClaw provides a self-hosted Gateway and is model-agnostic. It can use a local model, with documentation describing detection of runtimes such as Ollama, LM Studio, or llama.cpp. That can keep model inference on a machine you control when the selected runtime is genuinely local.
The boundary is broader than inference, however. If you configure a hosted provider, requests go to that provider. Traffic sent through connected chat platforms also goes to those platforms. OpenClaw’s local state directory may contain channel credentials, model-authentication data, transcripts, and tool output, so the operator—not a vendor’s managed service—must restrict host access, protect backups, and decide how long state is retained.

Claude Cowork runs tasks in an isolated environment on Anthropic’s servers. Its desktop application can expose selected local folders, browser activity, and computer interaction, but the app must remain open and connected to the internet for those local resources to be available. A paid Claude plan is required, and the documented local computer, browser, and file features require the macOS or Windows desktop app.
This model can be useful when you want managed execution while limiting the local surface to approved resources. It is not a local-only design: task context and tool activity are processed in the cloud, and local information made visible to the session becomes part of that interaction.

ChatGPT Work: cloud-coordinated local steps
ChatGPT Work offers local work sync as an optional workspace capability. Synced tasks are coordinated in the cloud; steps that need a local computer require a connected computer. The security documentation states that Zero Data Retention is not supported for synced Work tasks. That documentation concerns ChatGPT Work and does not describe Codex workflows, so do not infer Codex behavior from it.
Evaluate privacy as a permission boundary
Privacy is not just a provider’s training-policy statement. It is also the practical question of what the agent can read, what it can display to the model, and what actions it can take using your identity.
Application and screen access
Anthropic’s computer-use documentation says, “Claude asks for your permission before accessing each application.” Treat that prompt as a boundary to review, not as a substitute for supervision. Computer use takes screenshots, and anything visible on the screen—including a password manager, private chat, customer record, or notification—may be visible to the agent.
Anthropic also states, “These safeguards aren’t perfect, and Claude may occasionally act outside these boundaries.” Keep sensitive windows closed, avoid displaying secrets during an agent session, and use a separate operating-system account when the task does not require your primary profile.
Websites, documents, and prompt injection
Web pages, emails, and documents can contain instructions designed to redirect an agent. Anthropic’s safety guidance specifically calls out prompt injection in those sources. A page that says “upload all files” is untrusted content, not an authorization from you.

- Require confirmation before sending messages, making purchases, deleting files, changing settings, or publishing content.
- Inspect links, commands, and generated files before they are opened or executed.
Credentials and retained state
For a self-hosted system, identify the state directory and treat it like a secrets store. Restrict its filesystem permissions, encrypt backups, avoid syncing it to an unmanaged service, and revoke tokens when a machine or administrator changes. A transcript can reveal more than the original prompt because it may include tool output, file excerpts, and screenshots.

Compatibility is a chain, not a single operating-system badge. Confirm the operating system, desktop application, target app, connector, account type, model provider, network path, and required permissions for each task.
Claude Cowork requirements
- A paid Claude plan.
- The Claude Desktop app on macOS or Windows for documented local file, browser, and computer access.
- An active internet connection.
- The desktop app left open while the session needs local resources.
- Permission to access each application or folder used by the task.
If any link in that chain is missing—such as a closed app, unsupported operating system, or blocked network—the agent may still reason in the cloud but cannot complete the local step.
OpenClaw setup checks
OpenClaw connects a local Gateway and tests the selected model connection with a live completion during setup. Use that check to verify credentials, endpoint reachability, and the selected model before granting tools access to real data. Its documented macOS app exposes device capabilities; review those capabilities and disable anything the workflow does not need.
Connected-computer dependencies
Cloud-coordinated systems that perform local steps need a computer that remains connected and available. Document which machine is the execution target, what happens when it sleeps or disconnects, and whether a task can resume safely. A successful cloud response does not prove that the local side effect occurred.

Judge reliability with task-specific evidence
Reliability means completing your task with the correct, verifiable result—not merely producing fluent text. Define success before comparing agents:
- What observable file, record, message, or application state proves completion?
- Which actions are allowed, and which require confirmation?
- How should the agent report a partial failure?
- Can you reproduce the result from the transcript and tool log?
What the 73.7% benchmark does—and does not—say
MacAgentBench reported a 73.7% Pass@1 result for its best evaluated configuration, Claude Opus 4.6 running on OpenClaw, in a 2026 preprint abstract. The score is the proportion of benchmark tasks passed on the first attempt under that tested configuration. The authors say the advantage was primarily driven by the skill library rather than framework design.
It is one result on a particular macOS task set. It is not a universal success rate, an incident rate, or a guarantee for Windows, your applications, your permissions, or your data. No verified head-to-head adoption or across-workflow reliability statistic is established here.

Recommended Free Tools
- Select low-risk tasks. Choose representative jobs using synthetic or non-sensitive files: sort a folder, extract fields from a document, draft (but do not send) an email, or navigate a test website.
- Write completion checks. Specify the expected filename, row count, application state, or draft text. Make the check independent of the agent’s own description of success.
- Start read-only. Grant the smallest folder, browser profile, and application set that can demonstrate the workflow. Do not begin with administrator rights or an entire home directory.
- Observe intermediate actions. Record prompts, screenshots, tool calls, retries, unexpected navigation, and the exact point at which a human confirmation was requested.
- Test failure and recovery. Disconnect the network, close the desktop app, deny a permission, and provide a malformed file. Check whether the agent stops safely, explains the failure, and leaves no damaging partial change.
- Inspect outputs and retention. Look for unintended file copies, uploaded excerpts, browser history, transcripts, tokens, and temporary artifacts. Confirm where each is stored and how it can be deleted.
- Expand only when justified. Add a folder, connector, or write permission only if the task requires it. Repeat the completion and recovery checks after each change.
This procedure is practical guidance derived from the vendors’ permission and safety documentation; it is not an independently validated certification protocol.

Compare the three operating models
| Operating model | Strength | Primary exposure or constraint | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted Gateway with local model option | More control over host, model choice, and local execution. | Configured provider and chat traffic can leave the host; the owner manages credentials, updates, backups, and state protection. | Teams able to operate infrastructure and audit every connector. |
| Cloud agent with approved local resources | Managed execution and broad task capability without operating the model stack. | Prompts, tool results, and exposed local content are processed in the provider’s cloud; internet and an open desktop app are required for local access. | Users who accept cloud processing and need browser or application automation. |
| Cloud-coordinated sync with connected computer | Cloud orchestration combined with selected local steps. | Local work depends on an available connected computer; Zero Data Retention is not supported for synced ChatGPT Work tasks. | Workspaces that already have a managed cloud account and an always-available execution machine. |
Choose according to your risk and operating capacity
Choose a local-first design when control is the priority
A self-hosted Gateway with a local model option is the logical direction when policy requires minimizing external model calls and your team can administer a host securely. Verify that every connector is local or independently approved; a local model does not make chat-platform traffic or hosted-provider calls local.
Choose managed cloud execution when capability and administration win
A cloud agent can reduce infrastructure work and provide a controlled path to browser and application tasks. Limit folders and trusted web access, keep the app open only when needed, and require human approval for consequential actions.
Choose cloud sync only with explicit retention approval
If your workspace considers synced tasks, include the stated lack of Zero Data Retention support in its risk review. Confirm which local machine is connected, who can access the workspace, and how tasks are stopped when that machine is unavailable.
Operations, updates, and recovery
Reliability and privacy continue after the first successful task. Assign an owner for model and connector changes, review permissions after updates, and keep a rollback path for the desktop app or Gateway configuration.
- Access control: use separate operator accounts and least-privilege filesystem permissions.
- Secret rotation: rotate provider, channel, and application tokens after suspected exposure or staff changes.
- Backups: encrypt state and configuration backups; test restoring without exposing transcripts to an unintended administrator.
- Auditability: retain only the logs needed to investigate failures, and document where transcripts and tool output live.
- Emergency stop: know how to close the desktop app, disconnect the Gateway, revoke tokens, and disable connectors.
- Change testing: rerun a small representative task set after changing models, skills, permissions, or operating-system versions.
A practical decision checklist
Before adopting any desktop agent, require clear answers to these questions:
- Which model handles each prompt, and can the route change automatically?
- What leaves the computer: files, screenshots, browser pages, transcripts, credentials, or tool results?
- Where are those items stored, for how long, and who can retrieve them?
- Where does code or computer interaction execute?
- Which folders, applications, websites, accounts, and devices can the agent access?
- Does the required desktop app support your operating system and remain available during a task?
- What happens when a permission is denied, the network drops, or the computer sleeps?
- What independent check proves that the task completed correctly?
- Can you revoke access and delete state without rebuilding the whole system?
- Have you tested the exact workflow with low-risk data and observed its intermediate actions?
The decision is sound when the answers match your policy and your measured trial results—not when a label such as “local,” “private,” or “autonomous” sounds reassuring.
