On most Android phones, go to Settings > Apps > Default apps > SMS app, then choose the messaging app you want to use. If the labels differ, search Settings for “SMS app,” or open your preferred app and accept its prompt to become the default.
What changes when you choose a default SMS app?
Android routes new text messages through the selected default app. Google says that, when you set Google Messages as the default, you can review your text-message history there as well. The message database is stored on the device, and other apps may be able to access messages, so consider an app’s permissions and privacy information before choosing it. Choose an app that fits your needs
Compare the messaging apps actually available on your phone rather than assuming every app supports the same features.
- Features: Check whether an app supports the messaging functions you use. RCS, backups, encryption, and cross-device support can differ by app and carrier; availability and behavior are not established uniformly here.
- Privacy: Review the app’s privacy policy and the permissions it requests. SMS access is sensitive on Android. Android developer guidance for default handlers.
- Availability: The choices shown in Android’s SMS-app setting are your practical shortlist. An app missing from that list may not be installed or eligible to handle SMS.
- Device management: On a work-managed phone, an administrator may control or restrict default apps.
Change the default in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Default apps. Some phone makers arrange these menus differently, so use Settings search for “SMS app” if needed.
- Tap SMS app.
- Select the app you want. The selected app becomes the default for sending and receiving text messages. Google documents this path in its Messages settings help.
Set Google Messages as the default
You can also open Google Messages and follow its on-screen prompt to make it the default SMS app. Google documents both this setup route and the Settings route. Some instructions on its setup page apply only to Android 6.0 and newer. Get started with Google Messages.

If the SMS-app setting is missing or locked
The setting is hard to find
Search Settings for SMS app, or look under Apps > Default apps. Menu names and placement can vary by manufacturer.
Your phone is managed by an organization
A work administrator can set or restrict defaults on managed devices. Google’s Android Management API documents policy-controlled defaults, with support depending on Android version and management mode. Its published matrix lists the DEFAULT_SMS policy for company-owned devices running Android 16 and above; this enterprise policy detail is separate from the normal consumer setting. An app asks to become the default
Some SMS-related sensitive permissions are generally available to Play-distributed apps only when they are the default handler for the relevant function, unless an exception applies. Android’s developer guidance says an eligible default SMS handler must provide SMS functionality and a privacy policy, explain its core function, request appropriate permissions, and ask to become the default before requesting associated sensitive permissions such as READ_SMS. These requirements explain why a legitimate messaging app may request default status; they do not make every prompt trustworthy. Review the app and its permissions before accepting.
