Android Auto does not currently provide one universal “default music app” switch that works for every account. The reliable, documented approach is to open the media app you want on the car screen or name that service in your voice request—for example, “Play house music on Pandora” or “Play [artist] on YouTube Music.” Older instructions for choosing a provider in Google Assistant may not match phones now using Gemini.
This guide explains what “default” can mean, how to select a service for a drive or a single request, why another app keeps opening, and what to check when your preferred app is missing.
What “default music app” means in Android Auto
People use “default” to describe several different behaviors. Identify the one you want to change before adjusting settings:
- App for an unnamed voice request: the service Android Auto or your assistant chooses when you say “Play music” without naming a provider.
- App selected on the car display: the media app currently open from Android Auto’s app launcher.
- App already playing: the service whose playback session Android Auto resumes when you press a steering-wheel or screen control.
- App that starts when Android Auto connects: automatic startup playback, which is separate from provider selection.
These states can overlap, but they are not the same setting. Selecting YouTube Music on the display does not prove that an unnamed request will always go there. Likewise, stopping automatic playback does not nominate a new provider; it only prevents a session from beginning without a command.

Google’s current Android Auto help documents selecting a media app on the display and naming a service in a voice request. It does not document a single automatic-start or default-provider control that applies to every Gemini user.
The current way to choose a music service
Select an app from the car display
- Connect your phone to Android Auto and wait for the car interface to load.
- Open the app launcher on the car display.
- Select the compatible media app you want to use.
- If Android Auto shows a recently used media app shortcut, select it instead of opening the full launcher.
Use this method when you want to browse a service, choose a playlist, or operate an app that is already installed and signed in. It changes the app you are using on the display for that session. It does not necessarily make that service the provider for every future, unnamed voice request.
Make these changes while parked. Android Auto is designed to keep interaction limited while driving, and the phone should not be used to hunt through settings once the car is moving.
Name the provider in a voice request
For predictable results, include the service name every time the provider matters. Google’s examples include:
- “Play [song name] on Amazon Music.”
- “Play house music on Pandora.”
- “Play [artist] on YouTube Music.”
You can apply the same pattern to a playlist, album, station, or genre: state what you want and then say “on” followed by the service. This is the clearest documented way to use a different app for one song, playlist, or artist without changing anything globally. The exact wording can vary, but the important part is saying the provider aloud.
If the assistant misunderstands the title, repeat the request with the service name and a more specific song or artist. Naming the provider removes one source of ambiguity, but the app still needs to support the requested catalog item and voice action.
Set up the app before you drive
Android Auto can only launch an app that is available to your phone, compatible with Android Auto, and ready to authenticate. Complete these checks while parked:
- Install the app from Google Play. Android Auto’s compatible-app list is reached through Google Play while you are signed in to a Google Account with personalization enabled. Availability can differ by account, phone, Android version, and territory, so another driver’s list or an old screenshot is not proof that the app will appear for you.
- Sign in on the phone. Open the music app outside Android Auto and finish its login flow. A service may require a paid or premium tier for on-demand playback or in-car use. Confirm the account you intend to use, especially if several Google or music-service accounts are present.
- Update the app. Install any pending update, then open it once so its permissions and account state are initialized. An app that has never been opened after installation may not be ready when Android Auto first connects.
- Connect Android Auto again. After the app is installed and authenticated, reconnect the phone and check the car’s app launcher. If the icon appears, select it once before testing voice commands.
There is no separate cable, adapter, mount, or head-unit purchase required to choose a provider. The key requirements are a compatible app, an authenticated account, and a car/phone combination that exposes that app to Android Auto.
Google advises contacting the app developer for app-specific failures. Android Auto itself cannot repair a provider’s login, subscription, catalog, or playback error.

Why old “default provider” instructions may not work
Many older guides describe a Google Assistant menu for selecting a music provider. Those instructions came from an earlier Assistant experience and should not be treated as a universal current path. Google says Gemini is replacing Assistant on most mobile devices, and its current Android Auto help does not document one provider selector that appears for every Gemini account.
Some users may still see music-provider controls in their assistant settings, while others will not. If your account exposes a connected-provider option, its label and location can vary by app version, rollout stage, language, and region. Treat any exact path as account-dependent rather than as a guaranteed Android Auto setting. Do not assume that a menu shown in a 2022 forum answer is still present after a phone or assistant transition.

A recent community response reported this sequence: open the Gemini app, tap your profile picture, choose Settings, then Extensions, and review enabled music providers. This is community guidance, not a confirmed universal Google interface. Your account may use different labels or show no provider control at all.
If those controls are absent, do not keep searching for a hidden “default music app” switch. Use the better-supported workaround: name the service in the Android Auto request. If a provider setting is visible, test it with a spoken request and still keep provider-specific commands in mind, because the setting may govern only certain assistant requests rather than every display or autoplay behavior.
Stop Android Auto from opening the wrong service
First determine which behavior you are seeing. The fix depends on whether the wrong app is being selected by a voice request, resumed as the last player, or started automatically at connection.
Unnamed voice requests choose another provider
When you say only “Play music,” the assistant may use a provider already associated with your account or the app that was recently active. Say the service explicitly, such as “Play my workout playlist on YouTube Music.” This avoids relying on an undocumented account-wide default.
Recommended Free Tools
For a one-time switch, say the desired provider in that single request. There is no need to uninstall the other app or change the launcher order. If you later want the first service again, name it in the next command.
The previous app resumes playback
Android Auto may return to the media session that was active most recently. Open the app launcher and select the service you want before pressing play. Then start playback from that app so it becomes the active session for the current connection.
This behavior can look like a default-provider problem even when the assistant is not choosing anything. Check which app was playing at the end of the previous drive and whether a steering-wheel play button is resuming that session.

Music starts as soon as the phone connects
Automatic startup is a separate setting from choosing a provider. A 2025 Android Auto community response reported an option labeled Start music automatically in Android Auto settings, but Google’s current help does not establish that this control is present on every phone or head unit. If you see it, turn it off to prevent connection-triggered playback; if you do not, use the car manufacturer’s Android Auto settings and disable any separate media-autoplay option shown there.
Turning off autoplay will not redirect an unnamed voice command to another service. It only lets you connect silently and choose an app or issue a command afterward.
Make a missing music app appear in the launcher
Check compatibility and account status
- Verify that the app is listed as compatible with Android Auto for your phone and territory.
- Open the app on the phone and confirm that you are signed in.
- Check whether your plan supports the requested feature; some services restrict Android Auto playback to paid tiers.
- Reconnect Android Auto after completing the checks.
An app can be installed on the phone yet remain unavailable in Android Auto because compatibility is personalized. Google directs users to the Google Play view associated with their signed-in account and personalization settings, so availability is not necessarily identical between two phones.
Open the app on the phone first
If the icon is still absent, launch the app on the phone, leave it signed in, and connect Android Auto again. This can refresh an app that has not yet registered itself with Android Auto. Do not operate the phone while driving; perform this preparation while parked.
Samsung-specific unused-app behavior
Google notes that Samsung phones may temporarily disable apps that have not been used. Reopen the missing music app and review the phone’s unused-app or battery-management settings so the system does not disable it again. This explanation is specific to Samsung devices; other manufacturers use different battery controls and may not show the same menus.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBattery management is a visibility and launch issue, not proof that another provider is configured as the default. If the app returns after reopening it, repeat the launcher check before changing assistant settings.
Use this decision path when selection fails
- Is the app visible in the launcher? If yes, select it on the car display. If no, continue.
- Is it installed, compatible, and signed in? If any answer is no, correct that condition, then reconnect Android Auto.
- Does the phone manufacturer suspend unused apps? On applicable Samsung phones, reopen the app and review unused-app battery settings.
- Does a voice command still use another service? Repeat the request with the provider’s name included.
- Does playback begin immediately at connection? Look for an available automatic-start or autoplay control; its presence is device- and version-dependent.
- Does the app open but fail to play? Troubleshoot the provider’s login, subscription, network access, or catalog with that app’s developer.
Change one variable at a time. For example, first verify that the app opens from the launcher, then test a provider-specific command, and only afterward investigate autoplay. This separates an app-availability problem from an assistant-selection problem.
How to choose which app should be your everyday provider
Android Auto does not rank music services for you. Choose the app that meets all of these practical requirements:
| Criterion | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Android Auto compatibility | The app is offered as compatible for your phone, account, and territory. | An app that is not exposed to Android Auto cannot be selected from the launcher. |
| Account and subscription | You are signed in, and your plan permits the playback features you need. | Some services require a premium account for on-demand or in-car playback. |
| Voice controls | The service responds well to the song, artist, playlist, or genre requests you use. | Explicit provider naming works only when the app can fulfill the requested command. |
| Catalog and recommendations | Your preferred songs, podcasts, playlists, and stations are available. | A technically compatible app may still be a poor fit if its catalog lacks what you listen to. |
| Launcher behavior | The icon remains visible and the app opens reliably on your phone and head unit. | Battery management, account state, or app bugs can make an otherwise compatible service inconvenient. |
| Playback resumption | The app resumes the queue or playlist you expect after reconnecting. | Android Auto may resume the most recent media session, so consistency matters. |
Compatibility is not identical for every user. Google directs users to the personalized Google Play view while signed in, so another person’s app list—or an older screenshot—may not match yours. Subscription cost is likewise provider-specific; Android Auto does not set the price or determine which features a service places behind a paid tier.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing the open app with a permanent default: the launcher controls the current display session, not necessarily every future unnamed request.
- Following an old Assistant screenshot exactly: Gemini may use a different interface or omit the provider selector entirely.
- Testing while driving: install, sign in, reopen, and adjust settings before moving the vehicle.
- Assuming every installed app is eligible: Google Play compatibility and regional availability determine what Android Auto can expose.
- Blaming default selection for a missing icon: compatibility, sign-in state, and Samsung unused-app behavior can hide an app independently.
- Turning off autoplay expecting a new provider: autoplay controls whether playback starts, not which service answers a later command.
What you can and cannot change globally
You can choose a service per request
Provider-specific voice commands are the most dependable method for switching between services without changing account settings. They also let you use one app for a single song and another app for a later request.
You can choose the active app on the display
The app launcher and recent-app shortcut control which compatible media app you are viewing and operating during that session.
You may not have a universal default selector
Google’s current documentation does not promise a single Gemini-era setting that forces every unnamed Android Auto music request to one provider. If your account still offers a provider setting, its availability is not guaranteed across devices or versions.
Automatic startup is separate
Stopping music from starting when Android Auto connects does not select a different provider. It only changes whether playback begins without a new command.

Safe setup checklist
- Choose and install a music app that Android Auto lists as compatible for your account.
- Sign in and confirm the required subscription before connecting to the car.
- Open the app once on the phone, especially if it has not been used recently.
- Connect Android Auto while parked and select the app from the launcher.
- For voice control, include the provider name in the request.
- If another app starts, identify whether the cause is an unnamed command, session resumption, or automatic startup.
- On Samsung phones, check unused-app battery behavior when a compatible icon disappears.
- Use the app developer’s support channel for provider-specific login or playback failures.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change the default music app in Android Auto?
Open the desired compatible app from Android Auto’s launcher, or name that service in the voice request. A universal Gemini-era provider switch is not documented for every account, so do not rely on an older Assistant menu appearing on your phone.
Can I use a different music app for just one song?
Yes. Name the service in that request, such as “Play [song name] on Amazon Music.” This does not require changing a permanent setting.
Why does Android Auto keep opening Spotify or YouTube Music?
Determine whether it is responding to an unnamed command, resuming the last media session, or starting playback automatically at connection. Name the wanted provider, select it from the launcher, and review any available autoplay control separately.
Do I need a paid music subscription?
Not always, but some apps require a subscription or premium account for the playback features they expose through Android Auto. Check the provider’s terms for your region.

What should I do if the app is missing only on a Samsung phone?
Open the app on the phone and review Samsung’s unused-app or battery-management controls. Google specifically notes that Samsung may temporarily disable apps that have not been used; other brands may use different controls.
Where is the Gemini default music setting?
Some community guidance reports Gemini > Profile > Settings > Extensions for enabled music providers, but Google does not document that as a universal path. Menu names and availability can vary, so naming the provider in the Android Auto command is the safer method.
Can I make music stop starting automatically?
Possibly. A 2025 community report mentioned a “Start music automatically” option, but its presence varies by phone, Android Auto version, and head unit. If the option appears, disable it; otherwise check the car’s available autoplay controls.
Who should fix a playback or login error?
Contact the music app’s developer for provider-specific login, subscription, catalog, or playback failures. Android Auto can launch a compatible app, but it cannot correct that service’s account or content problem.
