There is no universal best launcher. Make the storefront that holds most of your purchases your primary client, or use the Xbox PC app as a library hub when a single view of supported installed games is more useful. Then verify each important title’s offline support and any required publisher app; a hub can start a game without replacing the store or service that owns and authenticates it.
What “default launcher” should mean on a Windows PC
PC games can involve three different layers, and confusing them is the source of most launcher frustration.
Storefront and ownership client
A storefront client is where a license is purchased or redeemed, files are normally installed, updates are delivered, and the account that owns the game is checked. If a game was bought through one store, another launcher generally cannot turn that purchase into an equivalent license. Epic’s support documentation states that games purchased on other platforms, including Steam or Ubisoft Connect, cannot be played through the Epic Games Launcher (Epic support).
Publisher authentication client
Some games add a second dependency. A title purchased through Steam may still open a publisher application for sign-in, licensing, updates, or online services. EA says that some Steam games require the EA app (EA Help). Ubisoft describes Ubisoft Connect PC as the application for managing and playing Ubisoft games, accessing Ubisoft+ content, and redeeming rewards (Ubisoft Help).

Library hub or aggregator
A hub gathers shortcuts and installed-game entries from several services. It improves discovery and gives you one place to start games, but it does not move ownership, installation authority, updates, cloud saves, achievements, or authentication away from the original service. Microsoft presents the Xbox PC app as a Windows gaming hub, and Xbox’s September 15, 2025 announcement says its library can aggregate supported games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other leading storefronts (Microsoft’s Windows PC gaming overview; Xbox Wire announcement).
Compare the main choices by role
The table describes what each app is suited to do. Integration lists and requirements can change, so treat the game’s own store page and support documentation as the final authority.

A practical decision framework
Score each candidate against the following questions instead of ranking launchers by popularity or appearance.

List the services that actually contain your games and mark the account used for each one. Count a game only once, even if a hub can display it in several places. The service holding the license remains your fallback client because it is the place most likely to handle installation, updates, verification, and account recovery.

2. How broad must the library view be?
If you routinely forget where a game is installed, a hub has practical value. The Xbox announcement describes aggregation across Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other leading storefronts, but “supported” is the operative word: an integration may omit a service, an edition, or a game that the app cannot detect. Open the Xbox app’s Library and Extensions area and confirm that your own services appear before adopting it as the first screen.
3. Do you need store-specific features?
Some players prefer to manage refunds, downloads, patches, cloud synchronization, community features, or add-ons in the same app where they bought a game. A hub can shorten the path from desktop to game, but it may hand the launch back to the original client. Choose the storefront client as your default when those controls matter more than a unified list.
4. Is offline play a deciding factor?
Evaluate offline behavior per title, not per brand. A launcher’s offline toggle describes what the application can attempt; it does not prove that every game, mode, save system, or achievement service will work without a connection.

Game Pass and similar catalogs are access subscriptions, while an individual purchase is a license tied to a store account. Microsoft includes Game Pass in its Windows PC gaming overview (Microsoft). If your priority is trying a rotating catalog, the Xbox app may deserve prominence; if you need permanent access to a purchased title, keep the purchasing storefront in your workflow.

Step-by-step: choose and test your default workflow
- Inventory your library. Write down each storefront, publisher account, subscription, and the games you play most. Include games installed on another drive or shared computer profile.
- Mark dependencies. For every frequently played title, read the store page’s requirements and note whether it opens a publisher client, needs online sign-in, or uses a separate account. Keep the note with the game name rather than assuming all titles from one publisher behave identically.
- Pick your primary job. Choose one: fastest access to a concentrated store library, one searchable list of installed games, or reliable access to a subscription catalog. This prevents a hub’s convenience from being mistaken for ownership.
- Check hub coverage. If you want aggregation, open the Xbox PC app and inspect Library and Extensions. Confirm that the storefronts you use are listed and that several installed games are detected. Integration support is subject to change.
- Launch a representative game. Start one title from the proposed default and observe whether the original store or publisher app opens. A successful hand-off is expected; it is not evidence that the hub has replaced the other service.
- Run an offline check before travel. While connected, sign in, let the game finish updates, and follow that title’s documented offline procedure. Then disconnect and test the main menu, a local save, and the mode you intend to play.
- Pin the workflow you will actually use. Pin the chosen app or hub to Start or the taskbar and keep direct shortcuts for games with special dependencies. “Default” is a repeatable habit, not a promise that every title uses one executable.
- Record exceptions. Maintain a short list such as “launch through the publisher app,” “online sign-in required,” or “use the original store for updates.” This saves time when a game is not visible or starts a different client.
Offline play: verify the game, not the launcher label
Epic Games Launcher
Epic’s Offline Mode is limited to supported single-player games. Epic warns that multiplayer and other online services may be unavailable, including cloud saves and achievements (Epic Offline Mode support). Before disconnecting, open the game once while online, allow updates to complete, and confirm that the save you need is stored locally. A title that appears in your Epic library may still fail offline if its own authentication or online features require a connection.
EA app
EA’s guidance is narrower: offline mode permits games that do not require an internet connection (EA Help). That means an EA client setting cannot override a game’s requirement for online authentication, live services, or a network-based mode. Check the individual game’s support page and test the exact edition installed on your PC.
Other storefronts and publisher services
Do not infer offline support from the fact that a game launches without an error while connected. Some titles perform a periodic license check, require a first online sign-in, or disable cloud-dependent saves. Write down the failure mode you observe so you know whether to reconnect, start the original client, or use a local-only mode.
Why publisher apps can appear even when you bought the game elsewhere
A purchase path and a launch path are not always identical. EA explicitly documents that some Steam games require the EA app, so installing from Steam does not eliminate EA’s authentication layer. Ubisoft’s documentation likewise positions Ubisoft Connect PC as the management and play application for Ubisoft games. When a second client opens, check that both accounts are linked correctly, allow both applications to update, and avoid uninstalling the publisher app simply because a storefront shortcut exists.

This also explains why a library hub should be treated as a directory. It can expose a game and invoke the right executable, while the original store and publisher service continue to perform the work that the title requires.

Most games are in one storefront
Use that storefront’s client as your primary launcher. You will encounter fewer hand-offs, and the same account controls purchases, updates, and support. Add shortcuts or a hub for games bought elsewhere rather than forcing every title through one app.
Your games are spread across several stores
Try the Xbox PC app as the first screen if its current integrations detect the services and installations you care about. Keep each original client installed and signed in because the hub does not replace them.

You mainly use a subscription catalog
Make the app that manages that subscription prominent, and distinguish catalog access from owned games in your notes. A title can leave a catalog even though a separately purchased copy remains available through its storefront.

You travel or have unreliable internet
Choose based on the specific games you intend to play offline. Test them in advance, keep local saves where supported, and retain the original client for any title whose publisher authentication is required.
You play competitive or live-service games
Prioritize the service that handles sign-in, updates, anti-cheat, and live connectivity for each game. A hub may be convenient for starting the title, but it cannot remove those service requirements.
Troubleshoot a game that launches through the wrong app

A simple rule for revisiting your choice
Re-evaluate your default after a major move in your library: buying mostly from a new storefront, cancelling or starting a catalog subscription, changing which games you play offline, or replacing a PC. Keep the app that best matches your current collection as the starting point, and retain direct launch paths for games with publisher or connectivity exceptions.
