There is no universal best data-removal service. The right choice depends on the sites you need covered, whether you want recurring requests, how much proof you expect, your need for human help, your location, and the information you are willing to provide. Security.org’s October 1, 2026 comparison placed Incogni first, Aura second, DeleteMe third, Kanary fourth, and Optery fifth, but that is Security.org’s own testing result—not an industry-wide consensus.

For California residents, check the state’s free DROP system before paying. It lets an eligible resident submit one deletion request to active data brokers. Paid services can still be useful for people outside California, websites not handled by DROP, custom requests, or ongoing monitoring.

What a data-removal service actually does

Data-removal companies find personal records on data-broker and people-search websites, prepare opt-out or deletion requests, submit them, and track the results. Depending on the plan, they may repeat requests when a listing reappears, handle custom sites, provide exposure reports, or have a person review difficult cases.

That is narrower than erasing your identity from the internet. A service normally works only with its supported sites and the request procedures those sites accept. Public records, news stories, social profiles, breach data, and information held by websites outside the service’s roster may remain. A successful result is therefore best defined as reducing broker and people-search exposure and keeping those listings from returning unnoticed.

To submit requests, a provider generally needs identifying information such as your name, former names, addresses, locations, telephone numbers, and email addresses. Read the provider’s privacy policy before enrolling: the comparison evidence establishes that this information is necessary for the work, but does not establish a reliable cross-provider ranking of retention or security practices.

2026 comparison: coverage, cost evidence, and support

The table separates published claims from independently described testing. “Sites covered” is not a standardized measurement: one company may count every automated broker endpoint, another may include custom removals, and another may count sites it scans rather than sites where it completes a request.

Option Published reach or role Price information available for this article Repeat requests and monitoring Evidence, custom work, and human help Eligibility or geography
Incogni Its comparison article describes more than 420 automated broker removals and unlimited custom requests. Its annual individual plans were described as starting at $7.99 per month using information checked August 13, 2025. That is historical and not a verified 2026 price. Automated removals are described by the provider; the exact recurrence schedule is not established here. Unlimited custom requests are a stated plan dimension. The comparison evidence does not establish a current standard for screenshots or human verification. Supported-country details are not established in the supplied material; confirm eligibility before purchase.
Aura No comparable current site count is established in the supplied evidence. Current 2026 pricing is not stated. Plan-specific follow-up terms are not stated. Security.org associated Aura with value in its own review; detailed current reporting and custom-removal terms are not established here. Confirm supported countries and the exact identity checks required.
DeleteMe No comparable current site count is established in the supplied evidence. Current 2026 pricing is not stated. Plan-specific recurrence terms are not stated. Security.org associated DeleteMe with thoroughness in its own review; current proof and human-support details require checking the live plan. Confirm country availability and whether household or additional-person coverage costs extra.
Kanary No comparable current site count is established in the supplied evidence. Current 2026 pricing is not stated. Plan-specific recurrence terms are not stated. Security.org associated Kanary with reach. The 2025 peer-reviewed study included Kanary, but that study was not a current product ranking. Confirm supported locations and any limits on custom requests.
Optery Free Basic Quarterly exposure reports and self-service opt-out resources are described on Optery’s pricing page checked October 13, 2026. No current price is stated for the free account. Exposure reporting is quarterly; self-service work is yours rather than an automated removal service. Useful for seeing exposure and learning the opt-out process, but it does not provide the paid tiers’ automated handling. Check whether the scans and resources cover your country and the people-search sites you use.
Optery Core 380+ sites with Expanded Reach enabled, or 150+ without it, according to the vendor’s current page. The current page’s price and billing cadence should be verified at checkout. Automated coverage is stated; a specific repeat-request interval is not stated. The vendor says Core does not include a human Privacy Agent for quality assurance or special handling. The higher tier’s broader names and locations are not included in this tier’s description; verify your exact needs.
Optery Extended 555+ sites with Expanded Reach enabled, or 325+ without it, according to the vendor’s current page. Verify the live price and whether billing is monthly or annual before subscribing. Automated coverage is stated; the page does not establish a universal recurrence schedule. Supports a broader set of names and locations than Core. Ask what review, escalation, and outcome evidence are included. Confirm that Expanded Reach applies to your country and the names or locations you need monitored.
California DROP A state system for requesting deletion from active data brokers through one request. Free to eligible California residents. Under the rules, brokers must access DROP at least every 45 days beginning August 1, 2026, with limited exceptions. It is a government request mechanism, not a commercial monitoring dashboard for every website on the open web. California residency is required; it does not automatically cover non-broker websites or residents of other states.

Security.org says its team tested more than 20 services, made more than 1,500 requests, checked over 50 data-broker sites, and spent more than 1,000 research and testing hours. Those are the publisher’s reported methods and figures, not independently audited measurements. Its ranking is useful as one comparative data point, not as proof that the top-ranked service is best for every person.

How to compare advertised coverage without being misled

Ask what the number counts

A headline such as 555+ sites can combine broker databases, regional versions of a site, and endpoints handled through an automated workflow. It may also depend on an Expanded Reach setting or a specific plan. Compare like with like: same tier, same country, same names and addresses, and the same distinction between automated and custom removals.

Separate scanning from removal

An exposure scan can find a profile without the provider being able to submit a deletion request. Ask whether a listed site is actively contacted, whether the request is accepted under that site’s process, and how the service records the outcome. A large scan index is not evidence that every discovered record will disappear.

Treat historical studies as evidence of method, not current inventory

The peer-reviewed paper Measuring the Accuracy and Effectiveness of PII Removal Services studied Optery, Kanary, Mozilla Monitor, and Incogni. Funding limits reduced the number of subscriptions, the researchers selected monthly services, and they used an Optery plan priced at $14.99 with a claimed 243-broker coverage for comparability. That 243 figure describes the study setting in 2025; it is not a current Optery plan claim and does not establish a universal winner.

What matters after you subscribe

Recurring follow-up

Broker data can be ingested again after a profile is removed. The practical question is not whether a provider promises a permanent deletion—no service can promise that across independent databases—but how it detects a returning listing and submits another request. Look for a stated scan cadence, clear re-request policy, and a way to see unresolved cases.

Outcome evidence

Before enrolling, determine whether reports show the original exposure, request date, broker response, and current status. Stronger evidence may include a captured profile before removal, a confirmation from the broker, or a later verification scan. If a dashboard shows only “submitted,” you still need to know whether the broker accepted, rejected, or ignored the request.

Custom removals and escalation

Some records fall outside a standard roster: a local directory, a niche genealogy site, or a people-search page using an unusual spelling. Check the number of custom requests, whether they are included or charged separately, and whether a human can handle identity verification, ambiguous matches, or a refusal. Incogni’s provider article is an example of a plan advertising unlimited custom requests; do not assume another service offers the same term.

Identity-data handling

The service needs enough information to distinguish you from people with similar names. Before sending it, check:

  • Which fields are mandatory and which are optional.
  • Whether you can use a dedicated email address for broker correspondence.
  • How long submitted identity data and request records are retained.
  • Whether contractors or human agents can access your documents.
  • How to delete your account and request deletion of stored information.
  • Whether the provider explains encryption, access controls, and breach notification.

The available comparison does not support ranking these companies by security or retention. Make the decision from each provider’s current privacy policy rather than from its broker-count marketing.

California residents: use DROP before paying

The California Privacy Protection Agency’s DROP system lets a California resident submit one request to active data brokers. The agency’s system requirements say the rules took effect January 1, 2026, and brokers must access DROP at least every 45 days beginning August 1, 2026, subject to limited exceptions.

DROP is strongest when your goal is to exercise California’s broker-deletion process without paying a subscription. It is not a universal internet-erasure button: the system does not automatically remove social profiles, news articles, every public record, or sites that are not participating data brokers. A paid service may still add value through broader site coverage, custom requests, exposure dashboards, or monitoring in another jurisdiction.

CalPrivacy Executive Director Tom Kemp described the launch this way: “Californians have a clear way to push back and regain control now that CalPrivacy’s DROP system is live.” That is the agency’s statement about the state tool, not an independent evaluation of commercial services.

Can you remove your data yourself?

Yes. DIY opt-outs cost no subscription fee, but they trade money for time, record-keeping, and repeated work. A state mechanism such as DROP can simplify the process for eligible Californians; elsewhere, you usually work site by site.

  1. Inventory your identifiers. List current and former names, spelling variations, old addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, and usernames. Include only information needed to match your records.
  2. Find the profile. Search the major people-search and broker sites for each name and location. Record the exact profile URL, the data shown, and the date.
  3. Locate the site’s opt-out route. Use the site’s privacy, do-not-sell, opt-out, or removal instructions. Some require an email confirmation or identity check.
  4. Submit the minimum necessary information. Redact unrelated details from an identity document if the site permits it. Avoid sending more information than the site requires.
  5. Save proof. Keep the request date, confirmation number, email thread, and promised response window in a spreadsheet.
  6. Verify the result. Revisit the profile after the site’s stated processing period. If it remains, follow the site’s escalation route and record the second request.
  7. Schedule rechecks. Search periodically because a broker can republish information received from another source.

DIY is most practical when you have a small number of exposed profiles and the time to maintain a log. A service becomes more attractive when you need many requests, several household members, multiple countries, or recurring checks.

How much should you expect to pay?

Prices and plan structures change frequently, so verify the checkout page on the day you subscribe. The available Incogni comparison used August 13, 2025 information and described annual individual plans starting at $7.99 per month; that figure should not be presented as a 2026 offer. Optery’s current page, checked October 13, 2026, describes Free Basic, Core, and Extended tiers and their coverage, but the supplied evidence does not provide a price to quote.

Compare the total amount charged over the full billing term, not only a monthly equivalent. Check whether the first term is promotional, whether renewal is automatic, the cancellation deadline, refund rules, taxes, and the price for additional people or locations. A low annual equivalent can cost more than expected if renewal terms are easy to miss.

A practical selection framework

Choose a free public route first when you qualify

California residents should submit through DROP if active data brokers are the main concern. Keep a separate list of non-broker sites that DROP does not address.

Choose broad automation when volume is the problem

If you have many profiles across supported brokers and little time for manual forms, prioritize a plan with automated submissions and clearly stated repeat requests. Confirm that your country, former addresses, and name variants are included.

  • Decreases Notary Public's liability from exposing client information
  • Journal column headers are printed on the Notary Privacy Guard, no having to peek underneath to complete the journal entry. Becomes part of the journal and also acts as a place marker.

Choose evidence when you need to prove results

For safety, employment, harassment, or legal documentation, favor a dashboard that preserves before-and-after exposure, request status, and broker responses. Coverage without outcome records makes it difficult to know what changed.

Choose human escalation for difficult records

Unusual spellings, shared addresses, deceased relatives with similar names, and brokers that demand extra verification are reasons to value a human Privacy Agent or support team. Confirm whether that help is included in your tier rather than assuming every paid plan has it.

Choose DIY when the exposure is small and stable

If you find only a few profiles and can maintain a recheck calendar, direct opt-outs may deliver the best value. Put the saved subscription money toward a secure email address and a well-maintained request log.

Checklist before entering your personal information

  • Confirm the exact plan, site roster, country coverage, and whether counts depend on an optional reach setting.
  • Ask how often the service rescans and whether repeat requests are automatic, manual, or limited.
  • Look for status labels that distinguish discovered, submitted, accepted, rejected, and verified.
  • Check custom-request limits, human escalation, and support response channels.
  • Read retention, deletion, encryption, and account-cancellation terms.
  • Calculate the full recurring cost, including renewal and additional-person fees.
  • Save an export or screenshots of your initial exposure report before removals begin.
  • Set a calendar reminder to review unresolved listings and the subscription’s renewal date.

The most defensible choice is the service—or free state process—that covers the records you actually have, shows what happened to each request, and fits your tolerance for recurring cost and identity-data sharing. Treat rankings and site counts as starting points, then verify the live terms for your location and plan.
