Choose a crowdfunded RPG tier by separating what the tier guarantees from everything you might pay later. Make one list of included rewards and a second list of add-ons, shipping, tax, VAT, duty and fulfillment charges. Do not treat the displayed pledge as your delivered total unless the campaign explicitly says the relevant shipping and taxes are included.
Your final amount depends on the campaign, platform, destination and choices made in the pledge manager. The safest approach is to compare the rewards you actually want, calculate a campaign-specific estimate and keep a reserve for charges the creator says are still uncertain.
What does this pledge tier actually include?
A pledge level is the fixed reward bundle you select first. BackerKit’s Crowdfunding 101 describes it as “A pledge level is a fixed bundle backers pick first. It sets which rewards they get.” The exact contents are campaign-specific: one tier may contain a printed rulebook, another may add a PDF, cards, miniatures or a limited edition cover.
Read the tier description itself rather than assuming that every item pictured elsewhere in the campaign is included. Campaign pages often show stretch goals, examples, retailer bundles and add-ons near the tier cards. Those items may not belong to the tier you select.

Make an inclusion list
For every tier you are considering, record:
- Each physical book, box, card deck, map, miniature or accessory.
- Each digital reward, such as a PDF, digital art pack or online access.
- The format and edition of every item: print, PDF, hardcover, softcover, standard or limited.
- The quantity, including duplicate books, sets of dice or multiple copies for a group.
- Stretch goals, bonus content and campaign-only items explicitly attached to that tier.
- The stated price and any deadline that affects your ability to change the selection.
Keep this list separate from optional purchases. If a reward is not explicitly listed in the selected tier, treat it as excluded until the creator confirms otherwise.
Compare the useful value, not the number of items
A higher tier is worthwhile only when its additional rewards match what you want. A tier that adds three physical items you will never use can be worse value than a lower tier plus one relevant add-on. Conversely, a tier-exclusive book or limited edition may justify the difference if that item cannot be purchased separately later.
When useful, calculate the extra price per desired item. Compare the next tier’s incremental price with the stated add-on price for the same item, while also considering whether the bundled version changes shipping, taxes or availability.

No. Add-ons are optional items bought on top of a pledge level. BackerKit defines them as “extra items backers can buy on top of a pledge level while the campaign is live.” The wording and timing differ across platforms, but the financial distinction is the same: an add-on increases your order beyond the selected tier.
Track add-ons as a separate list
For each add-on, write down its item price, format, quantity limit, availability window and whether it can be selected during the campaign, in the pledge manager or both. Note whether the creator says the add-on is guaranteed to ship with your reward or may be fulfilled separately.
An inexpensive add-on can still be expensive overall if it changes your shipping class or triggers a separate parcel. A poster may need a tube, a large box may add dimensional weight, and a non-book item may not qualify for the same postal service as a book. Never judge an add-on only by its displayed item price.
Do not rely on a future upgrade
Some pledge managers support late pledges, upgrades and additional purchases. That option is not automatic. BackerKit says backers can change or adjust a pledge level and add-ons before a campaign ends; after the campaign, changes or cancellations are at the creator’s discretion and may depend on the fulfillment stage. A project may close its survey, lock manufacturing quantities or stop accepting payments before you are ready.

If you need an item, select it by the campaign’s stated deadline. Treat a planned late pledge or upgrade as a possibility, not as a promise.
What will my total cost be after shipping and add-ons?
Use this working estimate:
pledge tier + desired add-ons + shipping + applicable sales tax or VAT + disclosed import duty or other fulfillment charge = estimated delivered cost
This is a checklist, not a universal billing formula. A campaign may include one component, estimate another and collect a third later. Label your result as an estimate whenever the page says a charge can change.
Separate charges by timing

Ask the creator when a row is unclear. A missing figure is a reason to request clarification, not a reason to assume the charge is zero.
Use a personal worksheet
- Copy the tier price and every included reward into your notes.
- Add only the add-ons you genuinely want, with their quantities.
- Record the shipping amount shown for your country, or mark it as an estimate if the campaign does.
- Check the tax or VAT statement for your shipping destination and selected rewards.
- Look for an explicit duty, customs or recipient-pays warning.
- Add a reserve for charges the campaign says will be calculated later or may vary with weight.
Do not call the result your final total until the campaign confirms all relevant charges. Your destination and later choices can change the amount.
Will I pay shipping now or later?
There is no single crowdfunding rule. The campaign may charge shipping with the pledge, collect an estimate and reconcile it later, or defer shipping until a pledge manager has your address and final selections. Read the shipping section, FAQ and pledge-manager announcement together.
Whole-order, weight-based shipping
BackerKit documents a whole-order method that calculates shipping from the combined weight of the pledge-level rewards and add-ons. It is practical when the creator knows product weights and has shipping rates prepared. Under this approach, adding a heavy book or box can move the entire order into a higher shipping band.

Stackable shipping
Stackable shipping can apply a base rate to the pledge-level rewards and additional fees to add-ons. This can suit products with different sizes or shipping classes. BackerKit gives examples such as a book that qualifies for media mail alongside non-book items, or a poster that must ship separately in a tube.

- Is shipping already charged, or is the displayed figure only an estimate?
- Are add-ons included in the shipping calculation?
- Can an add-on be shipped separately?
- Does a larger box or different packaging change the service or rate?
- Which countries and regions are covered?
- When will the creator lock the address and shipping method?
If the page gives a range rather than a final amount, budget toward the higher credible figure and keep the range in your notes.
Are VAT, sales tax, customs or duty included?
Tax treatment depends on the platform, the creator’s setup and your jurisdiction. Do not infer tax handling from the pledge price alone.
Kickstarter’s Pledge Manager
Kickstarter says its Pledge Manager calculates applicable tax after the campaign based on the shipping location and selected reward in supported jurisdictions, then collects and remits that tax there. Its guidance states: “Because Kickstarter’s Pledge Manager collects and remits sales and value-added tax on Pledge Manager transactions, you can’t charge or include tax in your pledge tiers if you plan to use our Pledge Manager.”

A campaign using that survey method therefore has a different collection process from one using the Pledge Manager.
Third-party pledge managers
With a third-party tool, the creator generally controls the tax decisions and remains responsible for compliance and remittance. BackerKit’s tax documentation says its tool can apply tax to pledge levels, add-ons and shipping, and advises creators to consult a qualified tax professional. That describes platform capabilities, not a guarantee that every project has configured them the same way.

Campaign examples show why the FAQ matters
The Pathfinder Quest campaign FAQ from Paizo stated that shipping, VAT and other applicable fees would be collected through BackerKit after the campaign when the games were ready to ship. A different RPG campaign using BackerKit stated that shipping would be calculated at shipping time and that duty or VAT was excluded and remained the recipient’s responsibility.
Those disclosures apply to those individual campaigns. They demonstrate why you must read the project’s destination-specific language instead of applying a general RPG crowdfunding assumption.

How should I compare two or more pledge tiers?
Build the comparison before choosing a tier. Record the facts that can change your delivered cost, not just the headline price.

Do not declare a universal “best value.” The right tier depends on which rewards you want, how much uncertainty you can tolerate and whether the campaign confirms the charges for your destination.

A pledge manager may collect your reward selections, shipping address, payment information and add-on purchases after the campaign. BackerKit says its manager can support these functions and late pledges. The creator may also use it to finalize quantities, calculate shipping and apply taxes.
- Watch for the survey or pledge-manager invitation and its completion deadline.
- Confirm that the tier shown matches the pledge you paid for.
- Select formats, quantities and add-ons carefully; digital and physical versions may be separate choices.
- Enter the delivery address exactly as required for your country and region.
- Review the shipping, tax and duty lines before submitting payment.
- Save the confirmation and any creator instructions about later address changes.
Platform features do not guarantee that a particular campaign will open its manager, accept a late pledge or permit an upgrade. Follow the project’s own notices and deadlines.

Platform transaction fees are not automatically your bill
BackerKit’s FAQ currently describes a 3.5% transaction fee on funds raised through its Pledge Manager for Kickstarter-launched campaigns, including add-ons, pre-orders, upgrades, shipping and taxes. It describes a 5% transaction fee for charges in its manager for campaigns launched on BackerKit. These are platform-side creator fees, not amounts to add to your backer estimate unless the campaign explicitly passes them through. Because pricing terms can change, check the current platform information and the project’s checkout before relying on them.

What risks remain after I pledge?
A crowdfunding pledge finances a project that still has to be produced and delivered. Kickstarter describes a pledge as a promise tied to creating the project and says purchases become final when the creator is ready to fulfill. BackerKit’s guide says rewards are not guaranteed by the platform and that creators are expected to deliver them.
That means a polished campaign page is not the same as a retail inventory guarantee. Review:
- The creator’s updates about production, manufacturing and shipping.
- The stated reward, fulfillment, cancellation and refund terms.
- The creator’s prior fulfillment record, where documented.
- Any warnings about international shipping, customs or address changes.
- The deadline after which a cancellation or change may be refused.
Do not assume that paying a later shipping charge removes production risk, and do not treat a pledge manager as insurance against delays or non-delivery.
Common add-on and cost mistakes
Mistake: treating the tier price as the delivered total
Fix: Add shipping, tax, VAT, duty and other disclosed charges before deciding. Mark estimates as estimates.
Mistake: assuming every pictured reward is included
Fix: Use the tier’s written reward list and verify stretch goals or campaign-wide bonuses.
Mistake: ignoring add-on shipping
Fix: Check whether shipping is weight-based, stackable or charged separately for certain items.
Mistake: assuming VAT or customs is handled automatically
Fix: Identify the platform’s tax method and read the campaign’s recipient-pays language for duty and VAT.
Mistake: waiting to upgrade
Fix: Confirm the campaign’s pledge-manager and survey deadlines. Post-campaign changes may be discretionary.
Mistake: adding a platform fee that is not charged to backers
Fix: Include only costs the campaign or checkout explicitly assigns to you.
Final pre-pledge checklist
- I can list every reward included in my chosen tier.
- I have separated desired add-ons from included rewards.
- I know whether shipping is charged now, later or estimated.
- I checked how add-ons affect weight, packaging and shipping class.
- I know how tax or VAT is calculated for my destination.
- I looked for a statement about customs duty and recipient responsibility.
- I recorded upgrade, cancellation and pledge-manager deadlines.
- I have a reserve for charges the campaign says may change.
- I understand that fulfillment remains a project risk and is not guaranteed by the platform.
Choose the tier only after this checklist produces a cost and reward bundle you can accept even if later shipping or tax changes within the campaign’s stated terms.
