Choose a cordless vacuum by matching its floorhead and independently tested pickup to your actual floors, then verify realistic runtime at the power setting you will use. Before buying, also check battery replacement, weight and balance, filtration, bin and filter maintenance, noise, charging, and storage. A maximum runtime printed on the box is not enough to show whether the vacuum will finish your cleaning.
No single cordless model is proven best for every home. The right choice depends on your proportions of hard floor, rugs and carpet; pet hair; floor area and layout; stairs and above-floor cleaning; storage; and budget. Use the process below to compare models on equivalent evidence instead of choosing by suction numbers or headline battery claims.
1. Start by mapping your home
Write down the conditions the vacuum must handle before looking at models. Bosch’s buying guidance identifies floor plan, storage and total area as important factors. A compact flat with mostly hard flooring creates very different demands from a large, carpeted home with stairs.
Measure the floor mix
- Hard flooring: note wood, tile, laminate, stone or other smooth surfaces. Bare-floor pickup and debris scatter matter most here.
- Rugs: record whether they are low-pile, shag or loose and lightweight. A head that seals aggressively can be difficult to move on some rugs.
- Carpet: identify low-, medium- or high-pile areas. Carpet usually needs a brush with bristles and enough agitation to lift embedded debris.
- Transitions: count door thresholds and changes between surfaces. You may need a floorhead that moves smoothly between settings or a second head.
List the cleaning tasks beyond floors
Include stairs, upholstery, shelves, curtains, car interiors and ceiling corners. These jobs expose differences in total weight, handheld balance, hose or wand reach, and the tools included. A vacuum that is acceptable on a floor can feel tiring when held overhead or carried up stairs.

The 8-layer precision filtration system, featuring multi-cyclone separation technology, locks in 99.99% of microscopic particles and expels clean air, preventing secondary pollution and making your home life more enjoyable.
Account for layout and storage
Measure where the vacuum will charge and stand. Some homes can accommodate a wall mount; others need a freestanding dock or a cupboard. Check the assembled height, whether the wand folds, and whether tools have a dedicated place. A vacuum that cannot be stored near the cleaning area may be used less often, regardless of its cleaning score.
2. Make floorhead and pickup your first performance test
Floorhead design determines how the machine contacts debris. RTINGS advises comparing soft rollers for bare floors with bristled brushes for carpet and pet hair. Look for independent pickup results on the surfaces in your home rather than treating a motor, watt or suction figure as a universal performance measure.
Mostly hard floors
Prioritize bare-floor pickup, control of debris scatter, maneuverability and low-power runtime. A soft roller can collect fine dust and larger particles without the aggressive bristles intended for carpet. Examine whether the test used flour-like dust, cereal-sized debris or both; a head can perform well with one particle size and poorly with another.

Require independent results on both surfaces. Check whether the package includes separate heads, a brush-roll adjustment or an automatic transition mode. Runtime should be measured with the powered floorhead attached, because a bare handheld tool can consume less power than the configuration you actually use.
Thick or high-pile carpet
Check carpet pickup and how easily the head moves. Very strong suction can make a head stick to a shag-pile rug or snag its fibers; RTINGS documented that behavior for one tested model, so treat it as a model-specific finding rather than a universal rule. Look for testing notes about pushing force, head height and whether suction can be reduced.
Pets and long hair
Compare hair pickup, tangling and the suitability of motorized mini-tools. Ask how often the brush must be cleared, whether the roller can be removed without a special tool, and whether replacement rollers are sold. Bin capacity and filter cleaning become more important when a home produces large amounts of fur and dust.
3. Read runtime claims under the conditions that matter
Manufacturers generally quote their longest runtime at the lowest power setting. RTINGS makes this qualification explicit, while Which? tests battery performance at both minimum and maximum settings. TechRadar cautions that a long Eco-mode figure has little value if the vacuum cannot collect the mess at that setting.

Separate three different runtime questions
- Low-power runtime: useful for light dust on hard floors, but usually the condition behind the headline number.
- High-power runtime: relevant for embedded carpet debris, pet hair and stubborn particles; it can be substantially shorter.
- Configured runtime: the result with the powered floorhead or motorized tool attached. This is the closest match to a normal cleaning session.
When reading a review, record the power mode, attached head or tool, surface and whether the test was continuous. Do not compare one brand’s minutes with another brand’s minutes unless those conditions are equivalent. Manufacturer power units and runtime procedures are not standardized.
Estimate whether one charge is enough
Break a typical clean into rooms and tasks. Note which rooms need high power, how long stairs and furniture take, and whether you pause to move objects or empty the bin. Then compare that workload with independently measured runtime in the same mode. If the evidence covers only an optimistic low-power setting, treat the result as incomplete rather than assuming it will finish the job.
Consider charging and interruptions
Check the stated recharge time, whether the vacuum can remain on its dock, and whether charging requires removing the battery. A long recharge can matter more than a modest difference in low-power runtime if you clean several areas in succession.
4. Treat the battery as a replaceable ownership part
Lithium-ion batteries eventually lose capacity. Which? senior researcher Humairaa Habib explains: “Lithium-ion batteries always deplete and eventually die over time, and at Which? we believe that cordless products should last longer than the batteries they come with. That’s why we no longer award Best Buys if it’s not possible to buy spare batteries from the manufacturer – no matter how good the vac might be.”

Verify compatibility before purchase
- Search the manufacturer’s parts store for an official spare or replacement battery for the exact model and edition.
- Confirm that the part is sold in your country or buying market, not merely listed on another regional site.
- Check whether the battery is user-replaceable and whether replacement requires tools or service.
- Record the battery part number and warranty terms with your purchase documents.
Do not assume that batteries sharing a voltage or connector are interchangeable. Model families can use different firmware, mounts or chargers.
Decide whether a second battery is worthwhile
A compatible spare can let you continue cleaning while the first pack charges. It is most useful in a large home, a heavily carpeted home or any routine that uses maximum power. Include the battery’s cost and official availability in the ownership decision, even when the vacuum’s initial price looks attractive.
5. Compare handling, balance and controls
Independent test programmes evaluate usability alongside cleaning because a powerful vacuum that is tiring or awkward may not be used consistently.

Weight is more than the specification number
Look for total weight with the floorhead and wand attached, then consider where that weight sits. A top-heavy design can strain the wrist during stairs or overhead work even if its listed mass is modest. If possible, handle the vacuum in both floor and handheld configurations before buying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck steering and pushing effort
Read observations about turning around chair legs, reaching under furniture and moving across rugs. High suction can increase head friction on some carpets. A review that reports only suction or pickup but not maneuverability leaves out a major daily-use trade-off.
Inspect controls and mode changes
Determine whether the trigger must be held continuously, whether a power button latches, and how easily you can change modes while moving. An automatic mode may adjust power, but compare its measured pickup and runtime rather than assuming it is optimal.
Match tools to above-floor work
For stairs and cars, compare the handheld weight, crevice-tool reach, upholstery or dusting tools, and any motorized mini-head. Count the tools included in the exact package sold in your market; bundles can differ by region.
6. Evaluate filtration and dust containment
For dust-sensitive households, particle filtration and what happens during bin emptying deserve separate attention. RTINGS warns that bagless bins can release dust when emptied and suggests doing so outdoors when possible.

Look for evidence, not labels alone
Check whether an independent test measured particle filtration or allergen retention and under what conditions. A marketing term such as “sealed” does not tell you how much dust escapes during emptying or filter cleaning.
Plan the emptying routine
- Find out whether the bin can be removed without bringing the main body over a wastebasket.
- Check if the release opens the bottom directly or requires reaching into the dust.
- Identify washable and replaceable filters, their cleaning instructions and drying time.
- Empty outdoors when practical if dust release is a concern.
Filter upkeep affects sustained performance. A neglected filter can restrict airflow, increase noise and reduce pickup, so include the cleaning interval and replacement parts in your comparison.

7. Include noise, charging and storage in daily usability
Which? includes noise and energy consumption in its testing, while hands-on reviewers also assess comfort and maintenance. Listen to a model at more than one power setting if you can; maximum power is often louder than Eco mode.
Noise
Compare measured or clearly described noise results under comparable settings. Consider when you clean, nearby bedrooms and whether a pet or child is sensitive to sudden noise. A single decibel figure without a stated mode is difficult to interpret.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Charging arrangement
Confirm the charger type, cable length, dock footprint and whether the vacuum can charge with tools attached. A dock that occupies a narrow hallway may create a practical hazard, while a removable battery can be charged away from the storage location.
Storage footprint
Check the dimensions with the wand, floorhead and accessories connected. If the dock does not hold every tool, decide where the remaining pieces will live. Storage convenience is part of availability: a vacuum that is hard to reach is less likely to handle quick spills.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Use independent test scores intelligently
Different sources answer different questions. Which? says it buys vacuums for testing and updates its programme each year. Its 2026 scoring weights are:
| Category | Weight in Which? 2026 score |
|---|---|
| Cleaning performance and allergen retention | 60% |
| Ease of use | 20% |
| Battery life | 15% |
| Noise and energy consumption | 5% |
These percentages are Which?’s editorial weights, not an industry standard or a prediction of how every owner will value a feature. The large cleaning-and-containment share reflects the organization’s view that pickup and keeping dirt contained come first. Its senior scientific advisor Monika Gil puts the principle this way: “When calculating the score, we consider what’s most important. Which? members told us that, first and foremost, a vac needs to be good at picking up dirt off any surface and keeping it contained – that’s why cleaning and allergen retention make up a large chunk of the overall score. Equally, a vacuum that is hard to use or doesn’t have enough battery to finish the job causes frustration. To be a top scorer, it needs to be the complete package.”
RTINGS’ current comparison considers runtime, floor type, weight, particle filtration and emptying. Its results belong to that laboratory’s equipment and scoring system. TechRadar describes hands-on testing in reviewers’ homes, including floor types, pet hair, larger debris, comfort, maneuverability, battery life, maintenance and value. Use these sources to inspect conditions and trade-offs, not to transfer one overall score blindly to your home.

These are comparison axes rather than universal pass marks. Compare products under equivalent test conditions wherever possible.
10. A practical buying procedure
- Describe the workload: record floor proportions, carpet pile, rugs, pets, hair, stairs, above-floor tasks, total area and storage location.
- Set non-negotiables: decide whether you require a soft roller, carpet brush, removable battery, handheld tools, low weight or particular filtration evidence.
- Collect comparable tests: record surface, debris type, power mode, attached head, runtime method, noise setting and handling observations for each candidate.
- Reject unsuitable heads: remove models lacking appropriate bare-floor or carpet performance for your home, regardless of advertised suction.
- Check realistic runtime: compare the measured mode and tool with your longest cleaning session; include recharge time and a second battery if needed.
- Verify parts: confirm official battery, filter, roller and charger availability for the exact model in your market.
- Assess use and storage: test or verify weight, steering, stairs, overhead balance, bin release, noise, dock footprint and accessory storage.
- Review warranty and service: read coverage for the vacuum, battery and charger separately, and note the route for repairs or parts.
- Buy only after a final condition check: ensure the regional package contains the floorheads and tools you evaluated, not a different bundle name.
11. Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing the longest advertised runtime
That figure normally represents the lowest power setting. Replace it with a test performed in the mode and configuration you need.
Comparing suction numbers from different brands
Watts, air watts, pascals and other units can be measured differently. Without a common method, they do not establish which vacuum picks up more dirt. Use surface-specific independent pickup results.
Buying one head for every surface without checking tests
A head optimized for hard floors may scatter debris or underperform on carpet, while a strongly sealing carpet head can be awkward on a shag rug. Confirm both surfaces and transition behavior.
Ignoring battery replacement
A cordless vacuum is a longer-term purchase than its first battery. Check official availability before committing, not after capacity has declined.
Underestimating dust from emptying
Bagless convenience can involve a dust plume. Read bin-release observations and plan outdoor emptying if necessary.
Forgetting the handheld configuration
Stairs, shelves and car interiors can reveal balance and tool limitations that are invisible in a floor-only specification sheet.
12. Final pre-purchase checklist
- My floor mix and carpet pile are documented.
- The tested floorhead suits each major surface.
- Pickup evidence covers the debris and floors I actually have.
- Runtime is stated for a realistic power mode and powered tool.
- Recharge time fits my cleaning routine.
- An official replacement battery is sold for this exact model in my market.
- Weight, steering and handheld balance are acceptable for stairs and overhead tasks.
- Bin emptying and filter washing will not create an unacceptable dust problem.
- Noise, charging and storage fit my home.
- The regional package includes the required heads, tools and charger.
If a model passes those checks, its headline specifications matter far less than whether it can clean your floors, last through your routine and remain serviceable as the battery and filters age.
