The right cordless drill depends on what you plan to make or repair, not on a torque number alone. For a value-focused home kit, Popular Mechanics’ 2026 guide names the Skil PWRCORE drill driver kit its budget pick; for more demanding work, that guide selects Milwaukee’s M18 2904 hammer drill as its best overall. A separate Pro Tool Reviews head-to-head from 2025 favors the FLEX FX1271T overall and the Ryobi PBLHM102 for value. Those are winners within different test groups, not a single universal ranking.

Start with the jobs you need the drill to do

A cordless drill can bore holes and drive screws, making it useful for furniture assembly, household repairs, woodworking, and other DIY work. Choose for the materials and tasks you expect to handle most often.

For everyday drilling and fastening

A standard drill/driver is suited to common household jobs such as pilot holes and screws. A compact or lower-cost tool may be easier to handle, but can struggle when a larger bit binds or demands sustained power.

For masonry

A hammer or combi drill adds a hammering action intended for masonry drilling. That feature does not mean every hammer drill performs equally in concrete, and a standard drill/driver should not be treated as an equivalent. Check model-specific test results and the intended material before buying.

How to compare drill specifications and kits

Torque and speed

Torque is one indicator of turning force, but a higher published figure does not by itself establish the better tool for your jobs. Consider the guide’s task results, speed settings, and whether the work involves small fasteners or larger bits. A drill that handles routine screws well may not be the right choice for repeated large-bit work.

DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Drill and Impact Driver, Power Tool Combo Kit , Includes 2 Batteries, Charger and Bag (DCK240C2)
  • Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
  • Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
  • Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
  • Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure

Weight, length, and handling

Compare bare-tool weight with weight after fitting the battery you expect to use. A shorter body can help in confined spaces, while a more powerful tool may be heavier. Battery size also changes the feel of the setup.

Battery platform and kit contents

If you already own compatible batteries and a charger, staying on that platform may reduce the cost of adding a bare tool. If not, compare the complete kit price and confirm whether it includes a battery and charger. A low bare-tool price can be misleading if those items are separate. Similar voltage labels do not mean batteries work across brands.

CRAFTSMAN V20 Cordless Drill/Driver Kit, 1/2 inch, Battery and Charger Included (CMCD700C1)
  • 1/2inch Cordless drill/driver with high performance motor produces 280 unit watts out for completing a variety of applications
  • 2speed gearbox with speeds of 0350/01, 500 for speed of fastening
  • 1/2inches Keyless chuck for fast and easy bit changes
  • Led light improves visibility in dark work areas
  • Included 20V max Lithium battery with high performance cells provides ample runtime and increased performance

Chuck and bit capacity

Check the model’s chuck capacity and the bit sizes you expect to use, where those details are available. The Skil test’s mixed result with a 1-inch spade bit illustrates why ordinary screw-driving performance does not guarantee easy work with larger bits.

Where the UK comparison fits

Which?’s 2026 cordless-drill guide provides UK-market listings for models from Bosch, DeWalt, Makita, Ryobi, and Black & Decker. It includes drill type, named battery platform, capacity, bare weight, and torque-setting count; model test dates vary, with some as recent as August 2026 and others in 2024. Treat those listings as regional, model-specific evidence rather than assuming the same bundles or availability in the US.

A practical way to make the choice

  1. Write down your main tasks. Separate ordinary screw-driving and drilling from frequent large-bit work or masonry.
  2. Decide whether a hammer function matters. Choose a model tested or specified for the masonry work you intend to do rather than relying on the label alone.
  3. Check your battery platform. Confirm that your existing batteries fit the exact model; otherwise compare full kits with batteries and charger included.
  4. Compare the usable setup. Weigh the tool with the intended battery, consider its length for your workspace, and check chuck capacity for your bits.
  5. Use test results in context. Compare the task and method reported by each guide, not just its award label or maximum torque figure.
  6. Verify the live offer. Recheck exact model number, current bundle contents, local availability, and price because guide prices are historical snapshots.

Why the top picks differ

Popular Mechanics describes testing holes in lumber, driving three-inch screws, and drilling masonry with hammer drills. Pro Tool Reviews reports a separate head-to-head group and timed tasks, including a FLEX performance test using a 6.0Ah Stacked Lithium battery. Different lineups, setups, and methods can produce different winners; neither guide’s result establishes a universal best drill.

For a home buyer prioritizing a lower-cost kit, the Skil is the clearest value-oriented example in these comparisons, with its larger-bit limitation worth noting. Buyers who need stronger performance or masonry capability can examine the Milwaukee, FLEX, and Ryobi results against their own tasks, battery situation, and budget rather than treating any one guide’s winner as the answer for everyone.

A reader discussion asking “What’s the best cordless drill to get in 2026?” appears in r/DIY; it illustrates the question, but is not a representative survey of buyers.
