The right computer for a TV hookup is one whose video output matches the television’s input and supports the display features you want. If both have HDMI, an HDMI cable is usually the simplest connection. If the ports differ, a compatible adapter may work; if you want to avoid a cable, check for Miracast or use Chrome casting for a tab or screen. There is no universal best computer for this job: the choice depends on your budget, operating system, workload, desired display performance, and available ports.
Start by checking the computer and TV ports
Before buying a computer, cable, or adapter, identify the computer’s video-capable output and the TV’s available video inputs. A USB-C connector does not by itself guarantee video output, so check the computer’s specifications. If both devices have HDMI, connect them directly with an appropriate HDMI cable. If the computer has USB-C or Thunderbolt video output and the TV has HDMI, use an adapter compatible with that particular computer port and the output mode you need.
Apple documents connecting a Mac to a TV through HDMI or Thunderbolt/USB-C, with an adapter when necessary. Microsoft also documents USB-C-to-HDMI adapters for Surface devices. Those instructions apply to the supported devices and adapters described by each company, not to every computer or adapter: Apple’s Mac display guide, Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter information, and Microsoft’s Surface adapter guide.
Choose a hookup method that fits how you will use the TV
| Connection | Best fit | What you need to check |
|---|---|---|
| Direct HDMI | A computer near the TV, especially when you want the TV to act as a computer display. | HDMI output on the computer, HDMI input on the TV, and a cable suited to the desired resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and audio support. |
| USB-C or Thunderbolt to HDMI | A computer with a video-capable USB-C or Thunderbolt port and a TV with HDMI. | Confirm video output from the computer port and adapter compatibility with the computer and desired display mode. Adapter capabilities vary. |
| Miracast | A Windows computer and compatible TV or receiver when you want a wireless display connection. | Miracast support at both ends, Wi-Fi enabled, and compatible drivers and receiver firmware. |
| Google Cast from Chrome | Showing a Chrome tab or screen on a supported Google streaming device. | A Chromecast or Google TV Streamer, Chrome, and a strong Wi-Fi connection shared by the computer and receiver. |
HDMI is a direct wired connection; Miracast and Google Cast are different wireless approaches. Casting from Chrome is not the same as connecting a computer directly to the TV over a cable. The cited setup guidance does not provide controlled comparisons of latency, picture quality, or cost, so choose based on compatibility and the way you intend to use the screen rather than an assumed performance ranking.

Pick a computer based on the display you want
For general computer use on a TV, make sure the computer can output the resolution and refresh rate you plan to use and that the TV’s input supports them. If HDR matters, verify the entire signal path: computer output, TV input, adapter, and cable. Microsoft’s Windows HDR guidance discusses HDR10 and supported interface classes, including HDMI 2.0 or higher; these requirements should not be treated as a guarantee that every computer, port, or TV supports HDR. See Microsoft’s HDR guidance.
For Apple TV 4K, Apple specifies an HDMI cable and calls for a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for a 4K HDR setup. That requirement is specific to the Apple TV 4K instructions, not a universal rule for every computer-to-TV hookup: Apple’s Apple TV 4K setup guide.
No computer model can be named as the best pick from connection information alone. To narrow the choice, decide first on your budget, operating system, workload, region, and target resolution and refresh rate, then check that the shortlisted computer has the required video output. If your only goal is displaying content from a browser, Chrome casting may be enough; for a full computer display, consider a wired connection or a compatible Miracast setup.

Connect a computer to a TV with a cable
- Check the computer’s video output and the TV’s labeled inputs. Confirm that any USB-C or Thunderbolt port you plan to use supports video.
- If both devices have HDMI, connect them with a suitable HDMI cable.
- If the computer has video-capable USB-C or Thunderbolt but no HDMI, connect a compatible HDMI adapter to the computer, then connect the adapter to the TV with an HDMI cable. Apple lists its USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter for supported Macs with Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, or USB-C. Microsoft lists 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz for its specified Surface USB-C-to-HDMI adapter; that figure applies to that adapter, not USB-C-to-HDMI adapters generally. Check the Apple adapter details or Surface adapter details for the relevant product.
- Select the HDMI input you used on the TV, then choose whether to duplicate or extend the computer display. In Windows, press Windows+P and select Duplicate or Extend. On a Mac, adjust mirroring, extending, and resolution in Displays settings, as described in Apple’s Mac display guide.
- If there is no picture, check the TV input, cable seating, adapter compatibility, and computer display settings. On a Mac, select the TV as the sound output if you want audio over HDMI.
Connect wirelessly with Miracast or Chrome
Windows: Miracast
The TV or receiver must support Miracast. If the TV does not, a Miracast receiver connected to its HDMI input can provide the receiving end, provided it is compatible with the Windows computer. In Windows 11, press Windows+K and select the wireless display. Microsoft’s instructions cover connecting to a Miracast-capable display and Windows display modes: Microsoft’s wireless display guide.
If the display is not discoverable, make sure Wi-Fi is on and check that the receiver supports Miracast; Microsoft also recommends checking drivers and receiver firmware. Its troubleshooting guidance is at Fix connections to wireless displays or docks in Windows. Microsoft’s Wireless Display Adapter uses HDMI for the display connection and USB for power; see Microsoft’s adapter instructions.
Chrome: Google Cast
Chrome can cast a browser tab or screen to a supported Chromecast or Google TV Streamer. Keep the computer and receiving device on the same Wi-Fi network with a strong connection, then follow the Cast workflow in Chrome. Google’s instructions are at Cast from Chrome to your TV. Do not assume a product described as “wireless HDMI” supports Miracast, Google Cast, AirPlay, or another protocol; confirm its actual protocol and compatibility with the computer and receiver.

What to buy for the hookup
HDMI cable
Buy an HDMI cable when both devices have HDMI, or when you are connecting an HDMI adapter to the TV. The required cable capability depends on the output features of the computer, adapter, and TV—not merely on the fact that the devices connect. For Apple TV 4K 4K HDR, Apple specifies a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable; check the setup requirements for that device rather than applying them to every computer: Apple TV 4K setup.
USB-C-to-HDMI adapter
An adapter is relevant when the computer has a video-capable USB-C or Thunderbolt port and the TV accepts HDMI. Confirm the exact computer port and adapter specification before buying. A connector that fits does not prove that a port supports video, and one adapter’s resolution or refresh-rate specification does not apply to all adapters. See the manufacturer-specific Apple and Microsoft Surface guidance.
Wireless receiver
A Miracast receiver may be useful for a Windows computer when the TV lacks native Miracast support. A Chromecast or Google TV Streamer can serve a different need: Chrome tab or screen casting. Before purchasing either, confirm that the receiver supports the protocol and workflow you intend to use.

Frequently asked questions
What cable do I need to connect a computer to a TV?
If both devices have HDMI, use an HDMI cable. If the computer has video-capable USB-C or Thunderbolt and the TV has HDMI, use a compatible adapter plus an HDMI cable. Check the device specifications for the resolution, refresh rate, and HDR features you want.
