There is no reliable four-provider “best” ranking here: no Hetzner, DigitalOcean, Linode/Akamai or OVHcloud servers were provisioned for this comparison, and no benchmarks were run. For a budget decision, first match the resources and region your workload needs, then compare the recurring total—including transfer, backups, storage and add-ons. The available official examples are not equivalent plans: Akamai’s Nanode example has 1 vCPU and 1 GB RAM, while OVHcloud’s displayed VPS-1 listing has 2 vCores and 4 GB RAM.

What makes a VPS cheap for self-hosting?

A virtual private server (VPS) is hosted virtual-server capacity that you administer for workloads such as websites and software applications. It can be a practical home for services such as Docker containers, WordPress, Nextcloud or GitLab; Hetzner lists those among its one-click apps.

The lowest advertised monthly price is not necessarily the lowest cost for your setup. A plan with less memory, storage or transfer may require upgrades or incur overages. A self-managed VM also leaves maintenance and operations to you, so its provider price is not the cost of a managed service.

Before comparing plans, write down the workload’s requirements: vCPU class and expected CPU duty cycle, RAM, storage capacity and type, expected outbound transfer, user geography, backup and recovery needs, and any paid features you will need. Compare plans against that list rather than treating similarly named tiers or core counts as equivalent.

What the available provider details show

The following are dated examples, not a like-for-like price ranking. Prices and specifications are attributed to the named providers’ pages as accessed in 2026; verify availability, region, currency, taxes and checkout total before ordering.

Provider Published example or relevant detail What is not established here
Akamai Cloud (Linode-branded pricing page) Its pricing page lists a Nanode example at US$5/month, with 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 25 GB storage and 1 TB transfer (Akamai, pricing page accessed 2026). Whether this example remains available in the region you need; your total after any separately priced backups, storage or egress.
OVHcloud The worldwide VPS page displayed $4.54/month for a VPS-1 listing with 2 vCores, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe, daily backup, unlimited traffic and 500 Mbps public bandwidth (OVHcloud, page accessed 2026). The page labels the displayed range “2027.” That the displayed offer applies to your region or will match your checkout price; it is not directly equivalent to the Akamai Nanode.
DigitalOcean DigitalOcean documentation defines Droplets as Linux-based virtual machines. Inbound transfer is free; extra outbound transfer is $0.01/GiB, and transfer is pooled across a team. Bundled-plan instances continue billing while powered off. A matched plan price and resource specification for this comparison. Newer resource-priced v5 configurations have a separate public IPv4 line item, according to DigitalOcean’s billing documentation.
Hetzner Hetzner lists cloud-server locations in Germany, Finland, Singapore and the USA, and one-click apps including Docker, WordPress, Nextcloud and GitLab. A usable current price table for a matched configuration; check the current configuration in Hetzner’s official calculator or console.

Akamai’s pricing page also lists block storage, object storage, backups, NodeBalancers and egress overage as separate pricing areas. OVHcloud describes daily backup as included in the displayed VPS-1 listing and a premium rolling seven-day backup as an optional paid service. Confirm the current terms and coverage for the exact configuration before relying on either backup option.

How to compare the real monthly cost

  1. Match the workload. Compare the same general vCPU class, RAM, storage capacity and type, and expected CPU use. Core count alone does not establish equivalent performance.
  2. Choose a nearby region. Select a location near your users, and compare network behavior only from equivalent test locations. A secondary Better Stack Community article from 2026 compared a DigitalOcean Basic Droplet in NYC3 with a Hetzner CPX22 in Helsinki; it explicitly notes that the different continents affect network comparisons.
  3. Read the transfer terms. Distinguish inbound from outbound transfer, determine whether an allowance is per instance or pooled, and calculate any overage from your expected usage. DigitalOcean documents pooled team transfer and $0.01/GiB for additional outbound transfer; do not assume another provider uses the same allowance or rate.
  4. Add required extras. Include backups, extra storage, public IP charges, bandwidth overages and any managed services you actually need. Akamai identifies several of these as separate pricing areas; DigitalOcean documents a separate public IPv4 line item for newer resource-priced v5 configurations.
  5. Compare checkout totals. Record currency, region, taxes and the date you checked the offer. Do not convert currencies without stating the exchange-rate source and date.

For each candidate, keep a simple cost line: recurring VM charge + required storage and IPs + backup + expected transfer overage + required managed services. If a value is not published for your chosen region or configuration, verify it with the provider rather than assuming it is included.

Which provider may fit your setup?

Choose by location and workload, not by a universal winner

Hetzner’s listed locations span Germany, Finland, Singapore and the USA, and its one-click app list may be convenient if your intended service is among those options. The available details here do not support quoting a current Hetzner price, so build the exact configuration in its calculator or console.

Rank #3
HP MicroServer Gen10 Plus Mini Tower Server, Intel Xeon E-2224 3.4GHz, 32GB RAM, 16TB Storage, RAID, Windows Server 2019
  • HP MicroServer Gen10 Plus Tower Server for Business with Microsoft Windows Server 2019 OS!
  • Intel Xeon E-2224 Quad-Core 3.4GHz 8MB CPU, Up To 4.6GHz Turbo
  • 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 PC4-21300 2666MHz Unbuffered Memory
  • 16TB (4 x 4TB) 7.2K 6Gb/s SATA 3.5" HDDs in RAID
  • Hard drives and memory upgrades included separately NOT installed, installation required.

DigitalOcean’s documented transfer rules are useful if you need to estimate team-pooled outbound usage. Account for the $0.01/GiB additional outbound rate and whether the configuration you select has a separate public IPv4 charge. The available details here do not establish a matching plan price or resources for a four-way comparison.

Akamai’s Nanode is a concrete low-priced example at the page’s stated US$5/month, but its 1 GB of RAM and 25 GB of storage may not suit a workload that needs more headroom. Add any relevant storage, backup and egress charges before treating that figure as your operating cost.

OVHcloud’s displayed VPS-1 offer lists more memory and storage than the Nanode example, as well as daily backup, but the page’s “2027” label and the stated $4.54/month are not a guarantee of the price or availability at checkout. Its listed 500 Mbps public bandwidth and “unlimited traffic” should not be read as proof that every network condition or service requirement is identical to another provider’s offer.

Separate the VM from managed services

A self-managed VPS price covers the virtual machine configuration, not your time spent installing updates, monitoring services, maintaining applications or recovering from mistakes. If you need a managed database, application platform, support tier or other operational service, price it separately and confirm that the provider offers the feature in your intended region. Do not compare such a service with a bare VM as if they were the same product.

What “tested” does—and does not—mean here

This article did not run instances or benchmarks at any of the four providers. The Better Stack Community article describes its own DigitalOcean NYC3 and Hetzner Helsinki test, but those different locations make it unsuitable as a controlled four-provider ranking. An OSSAlt article dated March 8, 2026 reports prices, specifications and benchmark tables for Hetzner, DigitalOcean and Linode; those are that publisher’s figures, not official live pricing or tests performed here.

A defensible performance ranking would need matched instance sizes, equivalent regions and test locations, test dates, workloads and published raw results. Without those controls, use benchmarks as context for the specific configurations and locations tested—not as proof that one provider is universally faster or cheaper.

Verify the offer before you deploy

  • Confirm the plan’s current vCPU, RAM, storage type and capacity in the region you intend to use.
  • Check the billing unit, currency, taxes and final checkout total rather than relying on a headline price.
  • Confirm transfer allowance, pooling rules, whether the allowance concerns inbound or outbound traffic, and the applicable overage rate.
  • Check backup coverage, retention and restore process for the selected plan; do not assume a provider backup includes every attached disk or replaces an independent backup.
  • Account for the public IP, extra storage and any support or managed service that your workload requires.
  • Recheck the provider page immediately before purchase: plan labels, prices and availability can change.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
