A CD/DVD label printer puts text, images or both on the label side of an optical disc. It can print directly onto a disc made with a compatible printable surface, or print a separate adhesive label to attach to the disc. The right method depends on your printer, supplies and how many discs you need to label.
What does a CD/DVD label printer do?
The term covers equipment and workflows for labeling the non-recording side of a CD, DVD or, on some systems, Blu-ray disc. A home or office inkjet printer may support direct disc printing with a dedicated tray. Dedicated disc-publishing systems can handle printing as part of a larger or automated workflow.
Direct printing and adhesive-label printing are different processes: direct printing applies ink to the disc’s prepared surface, while adhesive-label printing puts the design on a separate sheet that is then affixed to the disc.

How direct printing works
For direct inkjet printing, the disc needs a surface designed for inkjet ink. Canon explains that a “printable disc” has a label surface specially processed for printing, unlike a regular CD or DVD (Canon: Printing Disc Labels (CD/DVD/BD); Canon Asia: Printing on DVD/CDs).

The printer must support the feature, and it may require a model-specific tray or adapter. Canon’s instructions for supported models say to wait for the printer to prompt you before loading its multi-purpose or disc tray; loading early can damage the printer. Another Canon support article gives model-specific instructions to use the supplied CD-R tray and warns that ink on an incompatible disc may not dry. These details are not universal across printers, so follow the manual for your exact model and the media maker’s instructions.

Brother documents both direct printing on printable discs and printing a separate disc-label sheet for application (Brother: Printing on discs and disc label sheets). Whichever route you choose, use the printer and media manufacturers’ instructions for your equipment.

Which type suits your labeling job?
Supported home or office inkjet printer
This can be a practical option for occasional discs when your printer explicitly supports direct disc printing. Canon documents a workflow using Easy-PhotoPrint Editor on supported models. Confirm the model, tray, software and printable-disc requirements before buying supplies or starting a job (Canon: Create and print disc labels in Easy-PhotoPrint Editor).

Disc-publishing systems are intended for workflows where dedicated handling or automation is useful; they should not be treated as interchangeable with a basic household printer. Current vendor listings provide examples rather than a complete market ranking: Primera lists Bravo SE-3, Bravo 4200 and Bravo 4200 XRP disc products (Primera disc publishers), while Microtech describes the Xpress AutoPrinter as an automated CD/DVD/Blu-ray system with inkjet or thermal printing (Microtech Xpress AutoPrinter). Suitability, availability and support depend on the specific product and region.

Printable adhesive label sheets
This route can label discs without a printer that prints directly on discs, provided the printer supports the sheet and the label is intended for the disc. Follow the sheet maker’s application directions and check that the label is compatible with your discs.
Why software and setup matter
Software compatibility is part of the printer choice. Canon’s documented Easy-PhotoPrint Editor workflow lets users select a disc-label template, edit the design and print with the appropriate media and tray settings. Microtech describes DiscPrint software for CD, DVD and Blu-ray labels with support for inkjet, thermal and thermal retransfer technologies (Microtech DiscPrint). These are vendor-described workflows, not evidence that the software works with every printer or operating system; verify support for your exact setup.

Before printing directly onto a disc, check the following:
- The printer’s manual says the model supports disc printing.
- The disc has a printable surface compatible with the printer’s technology.
- You have the correct tray or adapter for that model.
- The design software and operating system are supported.
- You follow the printer’s prompts for loading and its specified media settings.
How to define the term accurately
A concise definition is: a CD/DVD label printer is a printer or disc-publishing system used to put text or graphics on an optical disc’s label side, either by printing directly on a compatible disc or by printing a separate adhesive label. The definition does not imply that every printer can print on discs, that all discs accept direct inkjet printing, or that automated production equipment is meant for household use.
