Choose the carrier board only after identifying the exact compute module and its connector. Then match the board’s exposed interfaces, power input and peripheral budget, storage variant, physical constraints, and intended use. Raspberry Pi CM4 and CM5 boards are not automatically interchangeable, and a Raspberry Pi carrier should not be assumed to work with Banana Pi’s BPI-CM7 simply because both modules use two 100-pin connectors.

Start with the exact module, not the brand name

A carrier board routes power, storage and I/O to a compute module. Its connectors, pin assignments and electrical limits must match the module installed on it. The first shopping decision is therefore the module generation and connector type.

Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 and Compute Module 5

CM4 and CM5 use two 100-pin high-density board-to-board connectors. Their official development carriers are the CM4IO and CM5IO boards respectively. Raspberry Pi documents cross-generation use in both directions, but with reduced functionality. A board that physically accepts a module may still lack a usable interface, expose fewer features, or require you to verify a particular signal in the detailed documentation.

Earlier Raspberry Pi modules

Compute Module 1, Compute Module 3, Compute Module 3+ and Compute Module 4S use the DDR2 SODIMM-style module family rather than the dual 100-pin CM4/CM5 connector system. Raspberry Pi lists CMIO3 for CM1, CM3, CM3+ and CM4S, while CMIO version 1 is listed for CM1 only. CMIO3 added a microSD slot compared with version 1.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not select a board because its product name contains “Compute Module.” Check the manufacturer’s compatibility table for the precise module revision. A SODIMM carrier and a dual-100-pin carrier belong to different mechanical and electrical ecosystems.

Turn the project into an interface checklist

Before comparing boards, write down every connection the finished device or test setup needs. Count ports rather than relying on a general description such as “multimedia” or “industrial I/O.”

  • Display outputs: number of HDMI connections and any DSI display flex cables.
  • Cameras: number of CSI-2 camera flex cables and whether a connector must also support a display.
  • USB: required connector type, USB generation and number of ports.
  • Networking: Gigabit Ethernet, Power over Ethernet, wireless requirements and any external antenna arrangement.
  • Expansion: 40-pin GPIO/HAT compatibility, voltage selection, fan control and PWM requirements.
  • Storage: microSD, onboard eMMC, PCIe storage or an M.2 socket.
  • Service and test connections: upstream USB, configuration jumpers, RTC battery and debug access.
  • Mechanical limits: board footprint, connector clearance, mounting holes, enclosure height and cable bend radius.

Mark each item as required, desirable or unnecessary. A development board can be worthwhile when it exposes every signal needed for bring-up, even if the final product will use a smaller custom board.

Compare the official Raspberry Pi development carriers

The following comparison uses the features Raspberry Pi documents for its two current general-purpose I/O boards. “Reduced functionality” means the board can be used with the other listed module generation, but not every board feature is available.

Characteristic CM4IO CM5IO
Primary module CM4 CM5
Other documented module CM5, with reduced functionality CM4, with reduced functionality
Video Two HDMI ports; two MIPI DSI display FFC connectors Two HDMI ports; two combined MIPI DSI/CSI-2 camera-display FFC connectors

Expansion 40-pin GPIO/HAT footprint and PoE header GPIO/HAT footprint, PoE header, selectable GPIO voltage and four-pin PWM fan connector
PCIe or storage expansion PCIe Gen 2; microSD slot for CM4Lite M.2 M-key PCIe socket for listed 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 devices; microSD slot for CM5Lite
Other board features RTC battery socket and configuration jumpers RTC battery socket
Power input 5 V through GPIO or 12 V barrel input; documentation allows up to 26 V only when PCIe is unused USB-C input at 5 V, 5 A or 5 V, 3 A with a 600 mA peripheral limit

When CM4IO is the logical choice

Use CM4IO when the module is CM4 and you need a broad evaluation platform: dual HDMI, two USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, PCIe access, a 40-pin header, camera and display FFC connectors, or configuration and RTC hardware. Its barrel input can simplify a bench setup, but the voltage and PCIe condition must be respected. If you install CM5 instead, verify every required interface because Raspberry Pi specifies reduced functionality in that combination.

When CM5IO is the logical choice

Choose CM5IO for a CM5 development system that benefits from USB 3.0, the M.2 M-key socket, combined camera/display FFC connectors, selectable GPIO voltage or the dedicated PWM fan connector. Its USB-C power specification is not interchangeable with a generic “phone charger” assumption: the board is documented for 5 V at 5 A for a 25 W input, or 5 V at 3 A for a 15 W input with a 600 mA peripheral limit. A CM4 can be used only with the documented reduced-functionality caveat.

Check power before connecting peripherals

Power problems often appear as random resets, USB dropouts or storage corruption. Evaluate the carrier, module and attached devices as one power system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CM4IO input choices

CM4IO accepts 5 V through the GPIO header or 12 V through its barrel connector. Raspberry Pi’s documentation states that the board can support up to 26 V when PCIe is unused. That is a conditional allowance, not a general instruction to apply 26 V while operating every interface. If your design needs PCIe, select an input within the documented PCIe-enabled conditions and follow the board’s power guidance.

CM5IO USB-C limits

CM5IO specifies USB-C input at either 5 V and 5 A, equivalent to 25 W, or 5 V and 3 A, equivalent to 15 W. In the 3 A case, Raspberry Pi documents a 600 mA limit for peripherals. Add the expected load of USB devices, an M.2 device, fans and other accessories before choosing the supply mode. A supply that powers the module alone may not provide the headroom required by the complete setup.

Power questions to answer in your design

  • What voltage and connector does the carrier officially accept?
  • Will PCIe be populated, and does that change the allowed input range?
  • How much current can attached USB, storage, cooling and HAT hardware draw?
  • Does the enclosure need a regulated input, fuse, reverse-polarity protection or a controlled shutdown circuit?
  • Will the production carrier use the same power arrangement as the evaluation board?

Match the storage variant

Raspberry Pi offers module variants with different storage arrangements. The microSD sockets on CM4IO and CM5IO are for the respective Lite modules without eMMC. If the installed module includes eMMC, the carrier’s microSD socket does not replace that onboard storage; the module variant determines which storage path is used.

Confirm the exact suffix printed on the module before planning an operating-system image or recovery process. For CM4, decide whether the product needs a Lite module with removable microSD or an eMMC-equipped module. For CM5, apply the same decision to CM5Lite and the eMMC variants. If your software image, field-update process or service procedure depends on removable media, make that requirement explicit rather than assuming every Compute Module exposes the socket.

CM5IO adds an M.2 M-key PCIe socket supporting the listed 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 form factors. CM4IO provides PCIe Gen 2 but does not present the same integrated M.2 socket. Check the mechanical length, keying, thermal clearance and software support for the storage device you intend to use.

Understand the BPI-CM7 path separately

BPI-CM7 is a different module family. Banana Pi describes it as an Allwinner H618 module with LPDDR4 memory, eMMC, K019 Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0 and two 100-pin board-to-board connectors. Banana Pi documents BPI-CM7IO as a carrier designed for BPI-CM7.

The matching connector count does not establish compatibility with Raspberry Pi CM4IO or CM5IO. Connector pin assignments, power rails, boot behavior, signal levels, mechanical keying and firmware support can all differ. Treat BPI-CM7 and Raspberry Pi Compute Modules as separate ecosystems unless a manufacturer explicitly documents a particular module-and-carrier combination.

What is established about BPI-CM7IO

The available Banana Pi documentation identifies BPI-CM7IO as the dedicated carrier for BPI-CM7. Detailed interface lists, power specifications, dimensions and current availability should be taken from the current BPI-CM7IO documentation before purchase or layout work. Do not fill those gaps by copying specifications from CM4IO or CM5IO.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to avoid a costly mismatch

  1. Verify that the board’s compatibility statement names BPI-CM7, not merely a generic 100-pin module.
  2. Compare the mechanical drawing and connector orientation with the module.
  3. Confirm every required interface in the BPI-CM7IO documentation.
  4. Confirm input voltage, current capacity, storage behavior and thermal provisions.
  5. Check current supply status and revision notes before committing to a production design.

Development carrier or custom production board?

Raspberry Pi describes its IO boards as general-purpose boards for development, testing and prototyping. They are useful for bringing up software, measuring signals, validating cameras and displays, and proving a peripheral selection.

For production, Raspberry Pi explicitly suggests designing a smaller custom carrier that includes only the connectors needed for the use case. A custom board can reduce footprint, eliminate unused connectors, place interfaces where the enclosure requires them and integrate power, protection, mounting and thermal features. It also creates responsibility for high-speed routing, signal integrity, compliance testing, manufacturing files, component lifecycle and service access.

Stay with the development board when

  • You are still selecting cameras, displays, storage or HAT hardware.
  • You need the full set of exposed interfaces for laboratory testing.
  • Low volume and a larger enclosure are acceptable.
  • Your priority is software validation rather than a final mechanical design.

Move to a custom carrier when

  • The product needs a smaller or shaped PCB.
  • Unused HDMI, USB, audio or expansion connectors consume space or cost.
  • Power entry, protection, connectors or mounting points must match a fixed enclosure.
  • You need controlled production revisions and a documented manufacturing test process.
  • The carrier will be deployed for a long-lived product and its module and components must be checked for lifecycle availability.

A practical selection procedure

  1. Record the module. Write the exact family and variant: CM4, CM5, an earlier SODIMM-based module, or BPI-CM7. Include Lite versus eMMC where applicable.
  2. Verify the connector. Confirm dual 100-pin versus SODIMM, connector orientation, mating hardware and the manufacturer’s compatibility statement.
  3. List mandatory interfaces. Count HDMI, USB, Ethernet, PCIe or M.2, camera and display FFCs, GPIO, fan and service ports.
  4. Choose the closest documented board. For CM4, start with CM4IO; for CM5, start with CM5IO; for BPI-CM7, start with BPI-CM7IO. Treat cross-generation combinations as exceptions requiring signal-by-signal verification.
  5. Validate power. Apply the carrier’s input limits, peripheral-current limits and any PCIe condition to the complete load.
  6. Validate storage. Confirm whether the module uses eMMC, whether the carrier’s microSD slot applies to that module, and whether the required PCIe or M.2 device is supported.
  7. Check mechanics. Compare PCB dimensions, mounting holes, connector clearance, cable paths and enclosure space.
  8. Decide development versus production. Use the IO board for evaluation; move to a custom carrier when the product needs a smaller, dedicated or integrated design.
  9. Recheck documentation and supply. Confirm the exact board revision, module availability and current specifications immediately before ordering or freezing a design.

Common selection mistakes and fixes

Symptom or mistake Likely cause Fix
The module does not seat or the carrier cannot boot it Wrong connector family or unsupported module generation Return to the manufacturer’s compatibility table and verify the exact module and connector.
A cross-generation board works but an interface is missing Reduced functionality in the documented CM4/CM5 cross-use case Check the detailed board documentation for the specific signal; use the native-generation carrier if the interface is mandatory.
The microSD card is ignored The installed module is an eMMC variant rather than the applicable Lite variant Confirm the module suffix and use its supported storage path.
USB devices disconnect under load Insufficient input or peripheral-current budget Recalculate the complete load and use the documented CM5IO 5 V/5 A or 5 V/3 A mode limits, or the appropriate CM4IO supply arrangement.
A BPI-CM7 project is planned around a Raspberry Pi board Connector count mistaken for electrical compatibility Use the documented BPI-CM7IO pairing unless a manufacturer explicitly confirms another combination.
The evaluation board does not fit the final enclosure Development features and connectors were treated as production requirements Use the IO board for validation, then design a custom carrier with only the required interfaces.

What to verify before ordering

  • Exact module generation, storage variant and wireless configuration.
  • Carrier compatibility statement and board revision.
  • Required HDMI, USB, Ethernet, camera, display, GPIO and PCIe connections.
  • Input voltage, connector type and total current budget.
  • Whether PCIe changes the permitted input range.
  • Whether the carrier’s microSD socket applies to the installed Lite module.
  • Board dimensions, mounting holes, connector clearance and cooling space.
  • Development-only features that will be removed in a custom production carrier.
  • Current documentation, availability and lifecycle information for the exact module and carrier.

There is no single universal carrier board. CM4IO is the documented starting point for CM4 evaluation, CM5IO for CM5 evaluation, and BPI-CM7IO for BPI-CM7. The correct choice is the board whose documented connector, interfaces, power limits, storage behavior and mechanical format match the module and the real workload.
