The most private car is not necessarily a particular make or model. Data practices can change by model year, trim, country, cellular service, account enrollment and privacy settings. To choose a vehicle that collects less data, compare the exact car’s privacy notice and connected-service terms, then verify the settings and features in the vehicle before you buy.
Prioritize five questions: What data is generated and transmitted? Why is it used and who receives it? Is enrollment optional? Can you disable or delete data? Which useful functions stop working when you decline connectivity? The checklist below turns those questions into a dealership-ready comparison.
What a connected car can collect
A connected car contains several computers, radios and sensors that can create records during ordinary use. Depending on the vehicle and enabled services, the data stream may include:

- Location and trips: precise GPS position, routes, destinations, time stamps and travel history.
- Driving behavior: speed, acceleration, braking, steering, mileage, seat-belt events and other measurements that can be used for driving scores or insurance programs.
- Vehicle status and diagnostics: battery or fuel level, odometer readings, fault codes, maintenance conditions, door or lock status and charging information.
- Connected-service activity: remote lock or start commands, roadside-assistance calls, navigation searches, hotspot use and other requests tied to an account.
- Paired-device information: phone identifiers, contacts, call records, messages, media information and destinations synchronized from a phone.
- Voice, camera and sensor data: recordings or transcripts from voice features, cabin or exterior camera feeds, microphone input and sensor readings used by driver-assistance or safety systems.
Not every category is transmitted in every car. Some information is generated locally, some is sent to the manufacturer or a service provider, and some is associated with a named account. A privacy notice should explain those distinctions; a salesperson’s general statement about “privacy” does not.

The Federal Trade Commission notes that firms do not have a free license to monetize information beyond purposes needed to provide a requested product or service. The sentence appears in the FTC’s consumer-data article, not as a car-specific legal ruling: Cars & Consumer Data: On Unlawful Collection & Use.
Why a brand privacy policy is not enough
A manufacturer may publish one privacy policy covering dozens of vehicles and services. The document can describe possibilities rather than what your particular configuration actually does. Check all of these variables:
- Model year, model and trim, because hardware and subscription bundles differ.
- Country or market, since legal rights, cellular partners and available services vary by region.
- Whether the car has an embedded modem, a paired-phone connection, a Wi-Fi hotspot or only local features.
- Which services are enabled, such as navigation, emergency assistance, remote commands, diagnostics or a driving-score program.
- Whether you create a manufacturer account, accept an in-car consent screen or let a dealer enroll you during delivery.
- Settings selected in the vehicle, mobile app and account portal.
Read the notice for the exact vehicle identification number or trim when the manufacturer provides that option. Save a copy of the version shown at purchase; online terms and menus can change.
A pre-purchase checklist for comparing two cars
Use the same written questions for every vehicle. Ask the salesperson to show the answer on the car’s screen or in the current owner materials rather than relying on a verbal assurance.
- Get the current documents. Request the model-year privacy notice, connected-services terms, emergency-service terms and owner’s manual. Ask which documents apply to the exact trim and market.
- Inventory every data category. Mark whether the notice mentions precise location, trips, driving behavior, diagnostics, voice, phone identifiers, contacts, camera feeds or other sensor data. Record whether each category is stored locally, transmitted, or tied to an account.
- Map purposes and recipients. Separate data needed to deliver a feature from data used for product development, marketing, insurance or driving scores. List affiliates, service providers, emergency operators, insurers and other recipients named in the notice.
- Check enrollment and defaults. Ask whether telematics is off until the buyer enrolls, whether a consent prompt appears at delivery, and whether declining one service also disables another. Have the dealer display the enrollment screen and photograph the choices for your records.
- Locate every control. Find privacy and location settings in the vehicle, the mobile app and the account portal. Ask customer service how to submit an access or deletion request. Confirm whether a location toggle stops external transmission or only turns off one feature.
- List the functionality trade-offs. Obtain a written list of what stops working without cellular connectivity or an account: emergency and roadside assistance, remote lock or start, live traffic, hotspot access, connected entertainment, diagnostic alerts and over-the-air services. Ask separately which safety features remain active.
- Test an un enrolled state when possible. Before signing, ask whether the vehicle can be demonstrated without an account or subscription. Confirm which menus, alerts and local functions remain available.
- Plan the ownership transition. Ask how to remove profiles, paired phones, contacts, destinations and app access when the car is sold, returned or transferred. Request the manufacturer’s reset and account-transfer instructions.
Compare data practices on separate axes
Do not reduce privacy to one unexplained score. A car that collects little data but offers no controls may be less suitable than one that collects more for features you value but provides clear opt-in, deletion and retention choices. Put the evidence for each candidate in a table like this:

Score each axis in your own notes only after defining what “better” means. For example, you might give greater weight to disabling precise location than to losing a remote-start feature. Keep the underlying disclosures beside any score so the result remains explainable.
Connectivity benefits and the privacy trade-off
Connected functions can be genuinely useful. Emergency assistance can send crash or location information to a response center. Remote commands can lock doors, start the vehicle or check its status. Live navigation and traffic data can improve routing, while a hotspot can provide internet access for passengers. Diagnostics may alert you to a fault or help a service center prepare for a repair.

Availability is model-specific. A telematics opt-out does not automatically tell you how collision avoidance, airbags, event-data recording or other safety systems behave. Ask the manufacturer or consult the owner’s manual for those systems separately.
Enrollment defaults matter more than marketing language
Ask exactly when data collection begins. Some vehicles present a consent screen during delivery; others start a trial or activate a connected package when an account is created. A “free” period can still involve collection and sharing, even if no payment is required.

Responses collected by Senator Edward J. Markey in late 2023 and early 2024 illustrate why the service and exception must be identified. In a response dated January 8, 2024, Subaru stated: “Vehicle telematics data is not collected by Subaru unless the customer voluntarily enrolls in Starlink.” That is the company’s representation for the described services and period, not an independent audit or a guarantee about every other data stream. Such distinctions mean that “not enrolled” may not mean “no data is ever generated.” Ask which safety, legal or operational exceptions remain.
What the recent FTC action does—and does not—mean
On January 16, 2026, the FTC finalized an order settling allegations involving GM and OnStar. The FTC’s release says the order requires the covered companies to obtain affirmative express consent before collecting, using or sharing connected-vehicle data, subject to stated exceptions. It also requires a way for U.S. consumers to request a copy of their data and seek deletion, a way to disable precise-geolocation collection when the vehicle has the necessary technology, and an opt-out for geolocation and driving-behavior collection with limited exceptions. Read the order description at the FTC’s January 16, 2026 release.
The order applies to the named companies and its specific terms. It is not a universal rule requiring every automaker to offer identical controls, and it does not prove that every vehicle from those companies has the same settings. Treat allegations as allegations and the listed requirements as order terms.
A 2023 Mozilla review, summarized in a congressional document reproducing Associated Press reporting, said none of 25 reviewed car brands met Mozilla’s minimum privacy standards and that 19 automakers’ notices said they could sell personal data. Those are dated policy-review findings under Mozilla’s criteria, not a current ranking of every model or trim. The document is at Congress.gov.

No current market-wide statistic in these sources establishes which automaker or model collects the least data. Choose from the vehicle-specific evidence instead of treating an old brand-level result as a present-day score.
How to verify settings at the dealership
Set aside time for a privacy walkthrough before completing paperwork. Use the exact sequence below:
- Turn on the infotainment system and open Settings. Look for Privacy, Data, Connectivity, Location, Connected Services or similar labels.
- Record every switch and its default state. Note whether a switch controls all location transmission or only navigation, roadside assistance or another service.
- Open the connected-services enrollment page without accepting it. Read the consent text, trial duration, renewal terms and data categories shown there.
- Open the mobile app’s privacy and permissions pages. Check location access, contacts, Bluetooth, microphone, camera and notification permissions.
- Ask the dealer to demonstrate an account-free drive mode or guest profile. Verify whether maps, radio, climate controls, driver-assistance features and safety alerts continue to work.
- Ask what happens after a factory reset. Confirm whether reset removes the vehicle from your account, or whether you must separately delete the account and contact customer service.
- Write down the current menu path and take photographs where permitted. Interfaces can change after software updates, so retain the owner’s manual and privacy notice as well.
Post-purchase: reduce collection without losing control of the car
After delivery, review the settings again because a software update or account invitation may enable options you declined. Disable services you do not need, remove unnecessary app permissions and avoid syncing contacts or destinations unless the feature is worth the exposure.
If you want a record of what the manufacturer holds, use the privacy-request process named in the notice or account portal. Ask for:

- The sources, purposes, recipients and retention periods for those categories.
- Correction of inaccurate information.
- Deletion of data that is not needed for a service, while recognizing that legal, security, warranty or billing exceptions may apply.
- Confirmation of which connected services remain active after your request.
Keep the request, identity-verification steps and response. Associated Press guidance emphasizes checking automaker settings and making privacy requests, but menus and availability can change; verify the current owner’s manual, notice and in-car or app controls for your model year and market: One Tech Tip: Modern cars are spying on you. Do not assume an accessory can disable embedded telematics across models. An OBD-II adapter, cellular blocker or similar device may interfere with safety, warranty or legal operation and is not established here as a reliable privacy control. Use the manufacturer’s documented settings and request process instead.
Before selling, returning or lending the vehicle
A connected car can retain personal information even after you remove the app from your phone. Before transfer:
- Delete driver profiles, saved addresses, destinations, call history, contacts and media accounts.
- Unpair phones, watches and other Bluetooth devices.
- Sign out of navigation, music, payment and manufacturer apps on the head unit.
- Remove the vehicle from your account and cancel or transfer subscriptions.
- Follow the manufacturer’s factory-reset and account-transfer procedure.
- Ask customer service to confirm that the next owner cannot access your account or historical data.
There is no single reset procedure for every manufacturer. A factory reset may erase local profiles while leaving an online account association in place, so complete both steps when the instructions require it.
A practical decision rule
Choose the vehicle that meets your transportation and safety needs with the smallest set of connected services you actually want, not the one with the most attractive privacy slogan. Before paying, you should be able to answer all of these questions in writing:
- Which data categories leave the vehicle?
- Which features require an account, subscription or cellular connection?
- Is enrollment genuinely optional, and what exceptions apply?
- Who receives the data, for what purposes and for how long?
- Where are the controls, and do they stop collection or only one use?
- How can you obtain or delete data?
- What exactly will you lose by declining connectivity?
- How will you erase the vehicle before resale?
If a dealer cannot show the current notice, enrollment screen or control path, treat that uncertainty as a purchasing risk. Compare another vehicle or delay the decision until the manufacturer provides a clear answer. The exact trim, service and setting—not a universal “private car” label—determine how much connected data your ownership will create.
