The best camping lantern depends on where you’ll use it and how you’ll power it. For backpacking, prioritize low weight and compact size; for cooking or lighting a group campsite, look for broader illumination and useful lower settings. A lantern’s maximum lumen rating is only part of the picture: compare runtime at the brightness you expect to use, along with charging options and mounting features.

REI’s camping-lantern guide, updated September 22, 2026, evaluated eight lights for portability, durability, brightness, battery life, features and ease of use. Its picks include rechargeable, solar-capable and fuel-powered designs. The examples below combine that attributed guidance with manufacturer-published specifications; they are not presented as a single universal ranking.

How many lumens do you need for a camping lantern?

For ambiance or close-up tasks, REI says 100 lumens or fewer can be enough. Cooking or illuminating a wider campsite generally calls for more output. Consider the area you need to light and whether you can adjust brightness, rather than choosing by maximum lumens alone.

Runtime changes with brightness. A lantern may last much longer on a low setting than on high, so compare the hours listed for the mode you’ll actually use. A maximum-lumen figure does not tell you how long the lantern can sustain that output or whether the light will be comfortable for your situation.

Which power source fits your trip?

  • Disposable batteries: You can carry spares and swap them in, which can be useful when recharging is impractical.
  • Rechargeable batteries: Charge the lantern before leaving and check whether its input matches the charging gear you’ll have. Some models also provide USB output for a device.
  • Solar or manual charging: These options can reduce reliance on an outlet, but check the specific charging method and plan around the conditions in which it will be available.
  • Fuel: Fuel-powered lanterns have different supply needs from battery-powered models, so account for the fuel you need to bring.

Camping lanterns to consider by use

These models illustrate different tradeoffs rather than a head-to-head test. Goal Zero and Coleman figures below are manufacturer-published claims, not independent measurements. Check the product pages for current specifications and prices.

Compact rechargeable light: Goal Zero Lighthouse Micro Charge

Goal Zero lists this lantern at 3.07 ounces, with a 2,600mAh battery, USB input and output, IPX6 water resistance, and a claimed runtime of 7 to 170 hours depending on setting. It can charge by USB or with a compatible solar panel. The wide runtime range is setting-dependent, so it should not be read as 170 hours at maximum brightness. The accessed manufacturer page listed it at $39.95; that price may change.

How to compare lanterns before buying

  1. Set the use case. Decide whether you need close-up light, a tent lantern, cooking illumination or broader light for a group campsite.
  2. Compare useful brightness and matching runtimes. Look at lower settings as well as maximum output. Compare runtime figures only when they refer to the same brightness mode.
  3. Check carrying and placement. For backpacking, consider weight and packed size. For a campsite, look for hanging options, hooks or magnets and a light pattern suited to the area.
  4. Confirm the power plan. Check battery type, charging input, access to spare batteries, and whether solar or manual charging is available if you need it.
  5. Review practical extras and durability details. USB device output, low modes and water-resistance ratings may matter depending on the trip. A rating such as IPX4 or IPX6 is a stated product specification, not a substitute for checking the manufacturer’s care and use guidance.
  6. Verify current price and availability. Specifications, stock and prices can change; consult the manufacturer or retailer listing before purchase.
