For a bullion dealer, the right e-commerce platform depends on how it calculates and commits prices as metal markets move, whether payment and fulfillment providers will support the business, and how much technical work the team can own. WooCommerce has a bullion-focused plugin route, Shopify has a listed precious-metals pricing app, and Medusa offers a code-driven path for custom pricing. None is a universal fit; evaluate the complete price journey from product page to checkout before choosing.
What matters most in a bullion store platform?
A bullion store may set a product price from a metal price plus a dealer-selected premium or spread. That makes pricing behavior central to platform selection: a spot-linked product price is not enough if the cart or checkout uses a different value, or if the shopper is shown a stale quote.
Before comparing platforms, write down the behavior the store requires at each point in an order:

- Quote commitment: When does a price become binding, and does the store lock it, recalculate it, or ask the customer to accept a new amount?
- Changing markets: What happens if spot moves after a shopper opens a product page, adds an item to a cart, or starts checkout?
- Operational records: Which system owns product data, available stock, wholesaler cost, customer orders, tax data, and any ERP, inventory, or vaulting records?
- Providers and capacity: Will the merchant account, payment gateway, shipping provider, and fulfillment workflow accept the business, and who will maintain the integrations?
These are workflow requirements to verify, not features to assume come with a platform. The platform and app documentation reviewed for this comparison does not establish that any option natively supplies every dealer’s required pricing formula, quote lock, or live page-update behavior.

The platform distinction is not simply managed versus self-managed. It is whether the required order behavior is available through a suitable integration or must be engineered, and whether the dealer can operate the resulting stack.
When is WooCommerce a practical choice?
WooCommerce is worth evaluating when WordPress is already part of the business or the dealer wants to manage a self-hosted commerce stack. The nFusion plugin listing specifically targets bullion dealers, coin shops, wholesalers, and precious-metals e-commerce businesses. It describes automatic precious-metals repricing, fixed-dollar and percentage markups, tiered or volume pricing, product variants, multi-currency support, optional checkout card-surcharge support, product synchronization, and wholesale-order automation with drop-shipping support.

The listing says prices refresh every 60 seconds by default and can be configured to a minimum interval of 10 seconds. Those are vendor-described settings, not independent performance results. It also states that use requires a monthly nFusion platform subscription; verify the current subscription, compatibility, and workflow with the provider before committing.

WooCommerce says its open-source plugin can be used for highly regulated or legally restricted products, but such stores cannot use certain Automattic services, including WooPayments, WooCommerce Shipping, WooCommerce Tax, WordPress.com hosting, and WooCommerce.com extensions. Payment gateways, merchant accounts, and shipping providers may impose their own restrictions as well. Determine whether the exact products and jurisdictions are acceptable to every provider the store plans to use.

Questions for the plugin vendor or developer
- Does the integration update the displayed product price, cart price, and checkout amount consistently?
- Does it lock a quote or recalculate when the shopper reaches checkout?
- How are refunds, order edits, failed payments, and a price-source outage handled?
- Which system is authoritative for inventory, wholesaler cost, and customer-facing price?
When does Shopify make sense?
Shopify is a candidate when the dealer values a managed commerce platform and a compatible app can implement its pricing and order policy. The Shopify App Store lists Precious Metal Product Prices and describes gold and silver product pricing linked to spot prices, with delayed and real-time options. Treat plan names, pricing, supported metals, update behavior, and checkout integration as details to confirm in the current listing rather than assume from a general platform description.
Confirm the app’s behavior against the order policy
- Does the selected plan update product pages, carts, and checkout in the intended way?
- Which metals, currencies, premiums, minimums, and rounding rules does it support?
- What does the shopper see if a quote becomes stale or the market changes during checkout?
- How are app updates, price-source interruptions, and order changes handled?
Shopify’s guidance requires merchants to comply with applicable laws in the merchant’s and customers’ jurisdictions, its terms and Acceptable Use Policy, and additional terms for services they use. That general guidance does not determine whether a particular precious-metals business, product, payment arrangement, or geography will be accepted. Confirm the specifics directly with Shopify and the intended payment provider.

When is Medusa the better fit?
Medusa is worth considering when the store needs custom pricing or checkout behavior and the business has engineering capacity to build and operate it. Its official guide demonstrates custom line-item pricing in a cart using a third-party metals-price service example. Medusa’s framework documentation describes customization through API routes, workflows, data models, modules, and integrations.

What should a bullion dealer verify before launch?
1. Payment and merchant-account acceptance
Ask the intended processor and merchant-account provider whether they support the business, its products, order values, refund process, and selling geographies. Do this early: a platform’s ability to host a store does not establish that a separate financial provider will process its transactions.
2. Legal, shipping, and fulfillment requirements
Identify the rules that apply where the business operates and where its customers are located. Confirm carrier and insurer terms, delivery-signature requirements, and procedures for loss or claims. If using wholesaler fulfillment, verify the actual drop-shipping workflow and terms rather than relying only on an integration’s feature description.
3. Price integrity across the order
Define the acceptable price source, update cadence, premium or spread, stale-data behavior, rounding, and the point when the order price is committed. Test how the store behaves when the metal price moves between the product page, cart, and checkout, including what the customer sees and what amount the payment request uses.

4. Ownership of data and integrations
Map how the platform and connected systems handle the catalog, stock, wholesaler cost, ERP or inventory and vaulting records, tax data, and order status. Assign ownership for each field and test how synchronization conflicts are resolved. For any custom integration, also decide who monitors failures and maintains it after launch.
Which platform should a dealer choose?
Start with WooCommerce if WordPress is already in use and the bullion-focused plugin, service limitations, payment providers, and quote behavior all fit. Consider Shopify if its managed operations and the current app-and-payment combination meet the required pricing workflow. Choose Medusa when custom behavior justifies an engineering investment and the team can sustain it. In every case, validate the complete market-move-to-checkout path and provider acceptance for the dealer’s actual business before launch.
