The right Bitcoin mining pool is not necessarily the one advertising the lowest percentage. Compare the complete payout contract: whether the method is PPS, FPPS, PPS+ or PPLNS; how transaction fees are handled; what the percentage is charged against; the payout threshold and schedule; share and stale-share rules; and the pool’s server performance from your location. A lower headline fee can produce a less suitable result if it excludes transaction-fee income, uses stricter share rules, or leaves a small balance unpaid for a long time.

Pool terms change. Treat provider figures as dated examples, read the operator’s current BTC documentation, and confirm the live rules before pointing an ASIC miner at a pool.

What a Bitcoin mining pool changes for a miner

A mining pool lets many miners submit proof-of-work shares to one operator. A share is work that meets the pool’s difficulty target; it is evidence of contributed hashpower even when it is not difficult enough to win a Bitcoin block. The pool records valid shares, credits miners under its selected payout method, and pays according to its accounting rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Solo mining exposes one miner to the full randomness of finding a block. A pool spreads that randomness across participants. Depending on the scheme, the pool may pay a predictable amount for accepted shares or may wait for the pool to find blocks and then divide the resulting reward. That choice affects payment smoothness, transaction-fee exposure, and who bears short-term luck.

Pool selection cannot establish whether mining is profitable by itself. Electricity, hosting, cooling, hardware efficiency, downtime, taxes and the Bitcoin price remain separate parts of the calculation. A pool determines how your earned reward is measured and delivered; it does not remove operating costs.

How the four main payout schemes work

The acronyms are useful only as a starting point. Operators can define the same label differently, including the share difficulty, accounting interval, fee treatment, block-confirmation policy and eligibility rules. Read the pool’s own definition and worked example before connecting equipment.

Scheme What is normally credited Where transaction-fee income comes from Who carries more short-term block luck
PPS A set amount for each valid share under the pool’s formula Usually excluded unless the operator expressly includes it The pool carries more of the variance in when blocks are found
FPPS PPS-style share payment plus a transaction-fee component Calculated using the operator’s estimate or whole-network methodology The pool still absorbs more block-finding variance than a block-dependent method
PPS+ PPS-style treatment for the block subsidy Allocated through PPLNS-style accounting from blocks the pool actually finds Subsidy payments are smoother; the fee portion varies with the pool’s blocks
PPLNS A share of rewards from the pool’s blocks, based on a recent share window Included in the actual block reward according to the pool’s rules The miner shares the pool’s luck and can see larger payment swings

PPS: Pay Per Share

Under PPS, the pool pays a defined amount for each valid share that satisfies its accounting rules, whether or not the pool finds a block during that period. Binance’s published formula illustrates the inputs: valid shares, share difficulty, the block subsidy and the pool fee. The exact formula, reference difficulty, settlement interval and treatment of rejected or stale work belong to the individual operator.

PPS can make income easier to forecast because payment is not directly tied to the pool finding a block at that moment. The trade-off is that the pool prices in the risk it accepts, and transaction-fee rewards may be excluded unless the terms expressly say otherwise.

FPPS: Full Pay Per Share

FPPS extends PPS by adding a transaction-fee component. The f2pool Help Center states: “The Full Pay Per Share (FPPS) payout scheme is an extension of the Pay Per Share (PPS) payout scheme that includes mining fees (transaction fee rewards).”

“Includes” does not mean every operator calculates the amount identically. f2pool describes an estimate based on network mining fees, while Binance’s published formula uses a whole-network average transaction fee per block. Check whether the component is based on an estimate, a historical average, a particular averaging window, or another published method. Also check whether the advertised percentage applies to both subsidy and fee components.

PPS+: PPS subsidy plus PPLNS transaction fees

PPS+ combines two accounting approaches. The block-subsidy portion is credited on a PPS basis, while transaction-fee income is handled using PPLNS-style allocation from blocks the pool finds. This can provide smoother subsidy payments than PPLNS while leaving the fee component exposed to the pool’s actual block production and share-window rules.

Because the two portions behave differently, ask for the operator’s exact split, fee calculation and settlement timing. A PPS+ percentage cannot be compared directly with a single PPS or PPLNS percentage unless the fee base and included rewards are equivalent.

PPLNS: Pay Per Last N Shares

PPLNS pays from blocks the pool actually finds. The operator looks at a recent window containing a defined number of shares, or an equivalent time or difficulty-based window, and allocates the block reward according to each miner’s contribution in that window. The exact meaning of “N,” how the window moves, and what happens when a miner disconnects are pool-specific.

Payments can be higher or lower over short periods because they depend on pool luck, participation and the actual transaction fees in the pool’s blocks. PPLNS may suit a miner who accepts variable settlement in exchange for the operator’s stated fee structure, but it is not a fixed-income promise.

How transaction fees affect your payout

A Bitcoin block reward has a subsidy component and transaction-fee rewards. The subsidy is governed by the Bitcoin protocol’s current schedule; transaction fees vary with the transactions included in each block. Pools differ in whether they exclude those fees, estimate them, include a network average, or allocate the actual amount from their own blocks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • PPS: Verify whether transaction fees are excluded or added under a separate rule. A low PPS fee with no fee component is not automatically cheaper than a higher FPPS fee.
  • FPPS: Identify the averaging method, reference period and whether the fee estimate is paid with the regular share credit.
  • PPS+: Separate the PPS subsidy credit from the PPLNS transaction-fee credit. The latter can fluctuate with the pool’s blocks.
  • PPLNS: Confirm that the actual transaction-fee amount is included in the block reward and learn when the block becomes eligible for payment.

When comparing offers, write down the expected components rather than comparing labels. For each scheme, record the gross reward basis, the transaction-fee basis, the percentage deduction, and any items that are excluded before the final credit.

What a pool fee really means

The displayed percentage is only meaningful when you know its base. One operator might deduct a percentage from a PPS subsidy credit; another might deduct from subsidy plus estimated fees; a third might show separate deductions for different portions. Ask whether the fee applies to all credited rewards, only the subsidy, or a particular account or settlement service.

Request a worked example using the pool’s published share difficulty and accounting period. It should show gross credit, transaction-fee treatment, fee deduction and net amount. If the operator does not explain those steps, treat the advertised percentage as incomplete information.

Do not infer net returns from the fee alone. Differences in stale-share handling, effective share difficulty, settlement delays, minimum balances and fee inclusion can outweigh a small percentage-point difference. No independently verified industry average fee or universal return figure establishes a single market benchmark.

Payout thresholds, timing and confirmations

The payout threshold is the minimum balance that must accumulate before the pool sends funds. A threshold that is high relative to your hashrate can leave earnings on the account for an extended period. Ask whether the threshold is fixed, adjustable, or dependent on the destination address or account status.

Timing has several separate parts:

  • Credit interval: how often valid shares become an account balance, such as continuously, hourly or on another schedule.
  • Block maturity: how many confirmations a found block needs before its reward is eligible for allocation or payment.
  • Settlement cadence: when the pool creates a payout batch after your balance passes the threshold.
  • Network confirmation: how many Bitcoin confirmations you wait for after the pool broadcasts the transaction.

These stages are not interchangeable. A pool can credit shares hourly yet wait for block confirmations before paying a block-dependent component. Read the account, payout and block-confirmation sections together.

Also determine what happens to a balance below the threshold when you stop mining. Some operators retain small balances until the threshold is met or provide a separate withdrawal process; the applicable rule must come from the current terms. Check destination-address requirements, account verification, custody arrangements and any restrictions on changing the payment address.

Share validity, difficulty and stale work

Every pool defines the difficulty at which your miner submits shares. A higher share difficulty reduces the number of submissions while representing more work per accepted share; it does not by itself change the underlying hashpower. Compare pools using their stated accounting rules rather than the raw number of shares shown in a dashboard.

Clarify these operational definitions before switching:

  • Which share difficulty is assigned automatically and whether you can request a setting.
  • How quickly the pool acknowledges a share after a job change.
  • Whether stale shares are rejected, partially credited or handled under a separate rule.
  • How duplicate, low-difficulty or invalid shares are treated.
  • Whether a temporary connection loss changes the eligibility window in a PPLNS account.

Providers do not publish a universal stale-share percentage or latency target. Measure your own miner’s accepted, rejected and stale shares after connecting to each candidate server, and compare like-for-like periods at stable operating conditions.

Server location and connection performance

Choose a server region that is physically and network-close to the miner when possible, but do not assume a listed location guarantees better results. Internet routing, your hosting provider, congestion and pool-side infrastructure all affect job delivery and share submission.

Run a controlled check from the actual mining site. Record the pool endpoint’s connection stability, job-update behavior and accepted-versus-stale share ratio over a meaningful operating period. No comparable latency, uptime or stale-share measurements are published by providers, so there is no defensible universal millisecond threshold or “fastest pool” claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a second endpoint configured if the pool supports failover. Confirm whether failover work is credited under the same account and payout rules, and whether switching servers changes the share window or account attribution.

A practical side-by-side comparison checklist

Build a worksheet before you choose. Use the pool’s current BTC terms, not a cached review or a headline banner.

Field What to record Why it matters
Payout method PPS, FPPS, PPS+ or PPLNS, plus the operator’s complete definition The acronym alone does not identify the reward and variance rules
Fee percentage Percentage and the exact base to which it applies Two identical percentages can deduct different amounts
Transaction fees Excluded, estimated, network-average, shared from actual blocks, or another method Fee income can materially change gross credit
Threshold Minimum BTC balance, whether it can be changed, and what happens below it Determines when small balances become spendable
Cadence Share-credit interval and payout batch schedule Separates dashboard credits from actual transfers
Confirmations Block-maturity and payment-confirmation requirements Explains delays in block-dependent rewards
Share rules Difficulty assignment, valid-share definition and stale-share treatment Affects credited work and troubleshooting
Connectivity Available server regions and your measured connection results Reduces avoidable stale work and interruptions
Payment destination Wallet-address rules, account requirements and custody details Determines control of funds and operational friction
Transparency Published formulas, block records, payout history, support documentation and change notices Makes the operator’s accounting auditable

Step-by-step: how to choose a pool

  1. Define your operating context. Record the miner’s expected hashrate, electricity or hosting arrangement, location, planned uptime and the minimum payment interval you can tolerate. These facts determine whether a high threshold or variable PPLNS income is practical.
  2. Collect current primary terms. Open each candidate’s BTC payout, fee, share, wallet and confirmation documentation. Note the publication or update date and save the exact definitions that apply to your account type.
  3. Normalize the reward components. For every candidate, separate subsidy credit, transaction-fee credit, fee deductions and any excluded rewards. Do not place a single fee percentage in your worksheet without its base.
  4. Model variance. Mark whether subsidy payments are pool-funded (PPS or the subsidy part of PPS+) or depend on blocks found by the pool (PPLNS and the fee part of PPS+). Decide whether predictable credits or exposure to actual pool luck better fits your cash-flow needs.
  5. Check the payment path. Verify the threshold, credit interval, payout batch time, block confirmations, Bitcoin transaction confirmations and below-threshold balance policy. Confirm that your intended wallet or account is supported.
  6. Test connectivity from the miner’s site. Select the nearest documented endpoint, configure a test worker and observe accepted, rejected and stale shares. Repeat with another region or pool under comparable conditions rather than relying on a generic speed claim.
  7. Review transparency and support. Look for a published formula, clear definitions, block and payout records, change notices and instructions for correcting a wallet address or worker configuration. Treat missing documentation as a decision risk.
  8. Recheck before committing. Pool terms can change. Confirm the live fee, payout method, threshold, transaction-fee policy and wallet requirements immediately before deployment, then monitor the account after the first settlement.

Dated provider examples: how terms differ

These examples show why current, operator-specific documentation matters; they are not market averages or permanent quotes.

Provider example Published or described rule How to use the example
f2pool BTC listing Published October 9, 2026: FPPS fee 4%; PPLNS fee 2%; default payout threshold 0.005 BTC, with the threshold changeable A dated service policy. Recheck the live page before configuring a miner; do not treat these figures as typical-market rates.
ViaBTC BTC documentation PPS+ described as the default method and PPLNS as an alternative; PPS+ crediting described as hourly, with PPLNS share-window and block-confirmation conditions An example of separate timing and eligibility rules within one operator. Do not assume another pool uses the same schedule or confirmations.
Binance published formulas PPS illustration uses valid shares, share difficulty, block subsidy and pool fee; FPPS illustration uses a whole-network average transaction fee per block An accounting illustration showing why the formula and fee component must be read, not inferred from the acronym.

The f2pool figures are provider terms recorded for a specific date. They do not establish an industry-wide 4% FPPS rate, 2% PPLNS rate or 0.005 BTC standard threshold.

Equipment and operating-cost context

An ASIC miner is the usual hardware category for contributing Bitcoin hashpower to a pool, but a pool comparison cannot tell you whether purchasing one will be profitable. Before deployment, account for the miner’s electrical draw, local energy price, hosting charges, cooling, noise, maintenance, internet service, downtime, taxes and the possibility that pool or network conditions change.

Use the pool’s payout estimate only as an input to a broader operating model. A smoother PPS or FPPS credit can improve cash-flow visibility without increasing the underlying Bitcoin reward generated by your hashrate. Conversely, a lower PPLNS fee does not guarantee higher net proceeds if its actual transaction-fee allocation, luck variance or settlement delay differs.

Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing the lowest advertised fee

Fix this by comparing the fee base and transaction-fee treatment in the same worksheet. Ask for net-credit examples, not just percentages.

Assuming an acronym is a contract

Fix this by reading the operator’s definitions for share difficulty, averaging windows, fee components, stale shares and confirmations. PPS+, in particular, has two different accounting portions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the payout threshold

Fix this by estimating how quickly your hashrate would reach the threshold and checking the policy for balances below it. A threshold that is manageable for a large farm may be inconvenient for a small miner.

Confusing account credit with a wallet transfer

Fix this by separating credit interval, block maturity, payout batch timing and Bitcoin network confirmations. Confirm each step in the pool’s documentation.

Using a distant endpoint without measuring results

Fix this by testing from the actual mining location and watching stale and rejected shares. No universal latency or stale-share figure is established by the available provider material.

Failing to monitor changed terms

Fix this by recording the terms’ date, subscribing to operator notices where available, and reviewing the fee, method, threshold and wallet rules whenever you change firmware, account settings or pool endpoints.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Making the final choice

Start with the payout behavior you need, then compare complete economics and operations. Choose PPS or FPPS when smoother, pool-funded share credits are important and the transaction-fee methodology is acceptable. Consider PPS+ when you want PPS-style subsidy treatment but accept that transaction-fee credits follow the pool’s blocks. Consider PPLNS when you understand the share window and are comfortable with payment variation tied to pool luck.

Whichever method you select, the decision should survive a line-by-line review of the current fee base, transaction-fee rule, threshold, settlement and confirmation schedule, share validity policy, measured connectivity and payment custody requirements. That full contract—not the lowest number in a pool comparison—determines your actual mining experience.
