A big data framework is software and supporting architecture for storing, managing, processing, and analyzing data whose scale or complexity challenges traditional approaches. The phrase can mean a specific distributed-processing platform, such as Apache Hadoop, or a broader architecture for coordinating the people, services, and functions involved. NIST’s Big Data Reference Architecture is the latter: a vendor-neutral model, not a software package.
What makes a framework a “big data” framework?
Big data can challenge conventional systems through its scale and characteristics. NIST describes scalable architectures in relation to volume, velocity, and variety: the amount of data, the speed at which it arrives or must be handled, and the diversity of its forms. A big data framework provides an organized way to address those demands using distributed resources.
In practice, “framework” is used at two levels. It may refer to software that supports storage or distributed processing, or to an architecture that describes how an entire data system fits together. Those meanings are related, but they are not interchangeable.

How NIST’s reference architecture organizes the work
NIST’s Big Data Reference Architecture (NBDRA) is a conceptual model for describing system roles, activities, components, and their relationships. It does not prescribe a particular vendor or implementation. Its five main roles show how data moves from supply to use:

- 【Powerful Load-bearing】12U Network Rack Open Frame is constructed from durable cold rolled steel; Rack shelf supports enhance stability, wall-mounted capacity of 130lbs, the ground-mounted up to 260lbs
- 【Considerate Designs】Open-frame layout, including a top panel adding space, anti-slip shelf stops fixing devices and compatible racks for stack and expansion to meet requirements of home server rack
- 【Complete Accessories】A 12U open frame server rack, two ventilated shelves, four shelf stops, four velcro straps and a set of equipment mounting screws
- 【Versatile Application】Ideal for space-efficient multi-device setups in warehouses, retail, classrooms, offices and more; Excellent choices as AV Rack/IT Rack
- 【Effortless Setup】 Network Rack includes hardware, a comprehensive manual, mounting hole drilling template and an online assembly video to simplify setup
- Data Provider: supplies data to the system.
- Big Data Application Provider: develops or integrates the application that processes the data.
- Big Data Framework Provider: supplies the platform and environment that support the application, including relevant storage and processing services.
- Data Consumer: uses the information or results produced by the system.
- System Orchestrator: coordinates the system and the relationships among its parts.
The architecture also treats management and security/privacy as cross-cutting concerns. They apply across the system rather than being confined to one stage of a data pipeline. NIST describes the model in terms of both information value—collecting, integrating, analyzing, and applying data—and the IT services that support those activities, such as networking, infrastructure, platforms, and application tools.
How Hadoop fits the definition
Apache Hadoop is an example of concrete software used for distributed processing, not a synonym for every big data framework. Apache describes Hadoop as a software library and framework for processing large data sets across computer clusters using programming models. One example within Hadoop is MapReduce, a parallel-processing framework.

- Space Saving: Maximum depth: 14.8". Use the wall mount network cabinet to maximize available space for retail locations, classrooms, back offices, network cabinets, and other locations where space is limited.
- Fast Heat Dissipation: The server cabinet is designed with vents to optimize airflow and avoid critical IT equipment overheating. Heat sink holes in the top, bottom, and rear panels are more conducive to heat dissipation.
- Sturdy Construction: Robust welded frame construction for durability and long service life. With 100 lbs wall-mounted load capacity and 200 lbs ground-mounted load capacity, you can place multiple devices in the server rack cabinet as needed.
- High Security: The locked glass door ensures the security of data and equipment. Wall mount rack enclosure server cabinet is ideal for use in public places such as offices, effectively protecting the security of your devices.
- Hassle-free Installation: Fully adjustable square-hole mounting rails of the wall mount server cabinet facilitate device installation. Wiring holes on the top, bottom, and rear panels provide you with easy cable routing.
NIST’s reference-architecture report also names Spark and Storm as framework examples. These names illustrate that the software category includes different systems; they do not establish a current feature comparison or recommendation.
When choosing software, compare it against the workload
The architecture definition explains what a framework does, but it does not determine which product is appropriate. A practical evaluation should begin with the data and operating requirements, including:

- Whether the workload is primarily batch processing, streaming, or both.
- Which data sources and formats must be supported, and how storage and compute services integrate.
- How the system scales and handles failures.
- Which programming interfaces and deployment environments are needed.
- What security, privacy, and governance controls are required.
- How much operational complexity and cost the organization can manage.
These are decision criteria, not a product ranking. NIST’s architecture is useful for understanding system roles; a software decision requires requirements specific to the organization and workload.
