Choose a data-center UPS battery by starting with the protected critical load, the ride-through time you actually need, the UPS’s approved battery configurations, redundancy, and site constraints. Only then compare valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) and lithium-ion systems on lifecycle cost, footprint, weight, recharge, monitoring, maintenance, safety, and end-of-life support. There is no chemistry that is best for every facility, and nominal amp-hours alone cannot size a reliable installation.

Start with the UPS duty, not the battery chemistry

The battery is one part of a power-protection system. The UPS must deliver conditioned, no-break power to the loads that cannot tolerate an interruption, while the battery supplies energy until another planned action occurs. That action might be generator acceptance, transfer to another source, or an orderly shutdown. A battery that lasts longer than the UPS, switchgear, generator controls, or operating plan requires can add cost without improving resilience.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) says UPS selection should consider “equipment type, capacity, and number; the level of power conditioning required; redundancy; and the length of uptime required in the event of an outage.” FEMP’s guidance page was updated in December 2024. Apply those same questions to the battery system and document the answers before requesting quotations.

Define the protected load

  • List every critical load that will remain on the UPS, including servers, storage, network equipment, control systems, and any auxiliary equipment that must continue operating.
  • Record real operating power in the units used by the UPS manufacturer, normally kW and kVA, and capture peak, minimum, and expected average demand.
  • Include approved capacity growth. A system sized only for today’s load can miss its required runtime after a rack expansion.
  • Identify noncritical loads that can be shed. A documented shedding sequence may reduce the battery system required for the protected load.

Set the ride-through objective

State what must happen before the battery reaches its operating limit. “Five minutes” is not a universal data-center requirement; it is meaningful only when tied to generator start and acceptance times, a shutdown sequence, or another defined source-transfer process. Also specify whether the requirement applies at beginning of life, at an aging limit, at a temperature boundary, or with a reserve margin. The supplied technical sources do not prescribe one universal runtime or reserve formula, so these assumptions must be agreed with the UPS manufacturer and design engineer.

Confirm the electrical architecture

Record the UPS make and model, power rating, phase arrangement, DC operating window, charger capability, battery strings or cabinets, bypass arrangement, and redundancy topology. In an N+1 or distributed-redundant design, determine whether each battery string supports one UPS module, a block of modules, or the entire critical bus. A battery cabinet that is electrically incompatible with the UPS can invalidate the warranty even if its voltage appears correct.

Input to document Why it changes the battery choice
Critical load and growth Determines power and energy requirements and prevents undersizing after expansion.
Ride-through and end action Sets the discharge duration and whether generator or shutdown coordination is required.
UPS DC window and charger Limits the number, voltage, chemistry, and configuration of approved battery strings.
Redundancy model Determines how many independent strings, cabinets, or modules are needed to survive a failure.
Room, floor and access limits Can favor a compact, lighter system or require structural and ventilation changes.
Local authority requirements Controls listings, fire protection, separation, installation and emergency procedures.

VRLA versus lithium-ion for UPS service

VRLA and lithium-ion are both used in UPS installations, but their operating and ownership profiles differ. Compare the complete, approved system—cells, cabinets, controls, charger, monitoring, installation and service—not a chemistry in isolation.

Decision factor VRLA Lithium-ion
Upfront cost Often lower in traditional UPS deployments; a current project price is not established by the available sources. Typically higher upfront cost in the Vertiv comparison; obtain a project quotation.
Energy and power density Generally requires more floor area and weight for an equivalent short-duration installation, depending on the product. Vertiv describes higher energy density and lower weight than VRLA, but results are product- and configuration-specific.
Recharge Recharge characteristics depend on the selected battery and charger. Vertiv’s comparison identifies faster recharge; verify charger limits and recovery time for the exact system.
Monitoring Requires a defined inspection, testing and alarm strategy. Battery-management controls are built into lithium-ion systems; monitoring remains highly recommended.
Maintenance and life Service intervals, temperature exposure and replacement planning materially affect ownership cost. Vertiv’s current product information describes longer life and reduced maintenance versus VRLA, but warranty, temperature and load conditions govern the actual result.
Safety and compliance Follow the battery manufacturer’s electrical, fire and installation requirements. Address cell protection, battery-management behavior, thermal events, listings, transport and local fire and electrical rules for the complete assembly.
End of life Define replacement, recycling and disposal responsibilities before purchase. Define replacement, recycling or disposal, service access and failure response; do not assume a generic program applies.

What VRLA means in practice

VRLA can be familiar to facilities teams and may fit established maintenance and recycling processes. Its economics depend on the room, replacement interval, labor, temperature control and the number of strings required. The Vertiv safety paper published in 2017 states that VRLA batteries lose 50% of battery life for every 8°C of heat rise. That is a vendor-published generalization, not a guarantee for every model; use the selected manufacturer’s temperature-versus-life data for design.

What lithium-ion changes

Vertiv’s 2017 safety paper characterizes lithium-ion as higher in energy density, lighter, faster to recharge and more expensive initially than VRLA. It also describes an integrated battery-management system and recommends battery monitoring. Those are general vendor comparisons, not performance guarantees. Confirm usable energy, discharge power, temperature limits, communications, alarm behavior and service requirements in the product documentation.

Vertiv’s current lithium-ion UPS information describes smaller and lighter battery installations, longer life and reduced maintenance compared with VRLA. Treat those statements as vendor claims that must be checked against the exact cabinet, warranty, load profile, ambient temperature and operating conditions. A smaller cabinet does not remove the need for clearances, fire protection, access and an emergency response plan.

Why LFP appears in data-center discussions

A 2016 Vertiv technical paper analyzes lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) characteristics for data-center UPS duty. It highlights power density, safety, calendar life and short-duration, high-power discharge, arguing that those characteristics can match the application examined. That analysis explains why chemistry selection is application-dependent; it is not a blanket recommendation for every UPS or a substitute for the approved battery list.

Size runtime with manufacturer data

Do not convert a nominal battery amp-hour rating directly into a promised data-center runtime. UPS efficiency, power factor, DC voltage window, discharge rate, temperature, aging, reserve assumptions, parallel strings and the UPS’s control limits all affect usable energy. Obtain runtime curves or a configuration report for the actual UPS, battery cabinet, load and operating conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Measure and forecast the load. Record kW and kVA at the UPS input or output as specified by the manufacturer. Include variation, peak demand and approved growth.
  2. Define the required event. State the ride-through duration and what must occur before it expires: generator acceptance, source transfer, load shedding or orderly shutdown. Document any beginning-of-life, end-of-life, temperature or reserve requirement.
  3. Identify the approved configuration. Confirm UPS model, power modules, redundancy, DC operating range, charger limits, number of strings, cabinet options and communications interfaces.
  4. Request model-specific calculations. Ask the UPS or battery manufacturer for runtime at the stated load and configuration. Have the design engineer verify aging, temperature, discharge-rate and reserve assumptions.
  5. Specify operation as well as hardware. Include monitoring points, alarm routing, acceptance tests, preventive maintenance, service response, failed-string behavior, replacement access and end-of-life handling in the specification.

Illustrative five-minute comparison

Vertiv’s 2016 technical paper gives one example: a 500 kVA UPS operating at 0.8 power factor and 90% efficiency, with a stated 444 kW battery load and a five-minute beginning-of-life runtime requirement. In that particular comparison, the LFP arrangement had a footprint 45% smaller and weight 72% lower than the high-performance VRLA arrangement. Those figures describe one specified configuration—not a market-wide result, a universal design target or a guarantee for another UPS.

Example parameter Value
UPS rating 500 kVA
Power factor 0.8
UPS efficiency 90%
Stated battery load 444 kW
Runtime requirement Five minutes at beginning of life
LFP result in that comparison 45% smaller footprint and 72% lower weight than the compared high-performance VRLA arrangement

Compare lifecycle cost, not just the purchase order

No current, independent market-wide cost comparison is established for data-center UPS batteries. Build a project-specific total-cost model that includes every item affected by the choice.

  • Hardware: battery modules, cabinets, racks, disconnects, fuses, breakers, buswork and battery-management or monitoring equipment.
  • Installation: labor, commissioning, lifting, access modifications, cabling, protection, ventilation, cooling and structural reinforcement.
  • Space: the value of occupied floor area and any room expansion, fire separation or load-bearing work.
  • Operations: inspections, monitoring software, alarm response, testing, training, spare parts and service contracts.
  • Replacements: expected service conditions, warranty boundaries, string replacement strategy and the cost of taking capacity offline.
  • End of life: removal, transport, recycling or disposal and documentation of chain-of-custody responsibilities.
  • Risk and downtime: consequences of a failed string, delayed replacement, unavailable parts or a maintenance procedure that requires a protected-load transfer.

Ask each bidder to state assumptions for temperature, load profile, discharge frequency, warranty capacity, calendar life, expected service life and replacement labor. A lower initial quote can become more expensive if it requires extra floor area, frequent replacements or extensive structural work.

Vertiv’s lifecycle paper discusses design, testing, specification, installation, site acceptance, operation, service, failure management and end of life, and references UL 1973 and related component and control standards. The 2017 Vertiv safety paper also discusses UL 1973 for stationary battery systems and lithium-ion protections. Those documents provide technical context from their publication periods; they do not confirm current compliance at your site. The 2017 paper’s code references are historical.

Before procurement, obtain current listing documentation for the exact assembly and ask the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) what applies to the installation. Confirm fire and electrical requirements, room separation, detection and suppression, ventilation, seismic or structural provisions, battery transport, worker procedures and emergency-response coordination. Record which party is responsible for permits, inspections, site acceptance and changes required by the AHJ.

Monitoring, maintenance and failure response

A battery-management system can report voltage, temperature, state estimates, alarms and protective actions, but telemetry is useful only when someone owns the response. Define alarm priorities, recipients, escalation times, remote access, data retention and procedures for a failed module or string.

  • Establish baseline readings during commissioning and trend them over time.
  • Use the manufacturer’s inspection and test intervals; do not infer a service schedule from chemistry alone.
  • Verify charger operation, connections, protective devices, communications and environmental conditions.
  • Document how a weak string is isolated while preserving redundancy and how replacement capacity is verified.
  • Coordinate maintenance with generator tests, bypass operations and the facility’s change-control process.
  • Keep spare-part, warranty and service contacts available for the entire supported life.

Lithium-ion systems still require inspection and care even when they are marketed as low-maintenance. VRLA systems likewise need temperature management, inspection and timely replacement. Assign these responsibilities in the operating procedure rather than leaving them implicit in the purchase contract.

UPS battery or behind-the-meter BESS?

A UPS battery and a behind-the-meter battery energy-storage system (BESS) may both store electricity, but they are not interchangeable.

Characteristic UPS battery system Behind-the-meter BESS
Primary role Protects critical loads with conditioned, no-break power. Supports site-level energy management, flexibility and longer-duration reserve energy.
Connection and controls Integrated with the UPS DC bus, charger, inverter and transfer or bypass controls. Connected to the site electrical system with controls for dispatch, peak management or reserve.
Ride-through expectation Usually short-duration support until another source is accepted or loads shut down. Generally intended for longer-duration or scheduled energy services, subject to its power-conversion system.
Can one replace the other? No; removing the UPS function can expose critical loads to transfer disturbances. No; a BESS does not automatically provide the UPS’s no-break conditioning and control path.

Vertiv’s architecture article dated June 26, 2026 summarizes the distinction: “A UPS protects critical loads with conditioned, no-break power, while a conventional behind-the-meter (BTM) BESS supports site-level energy management, flexibility, and longer-duration reserve energy.” In a large facility, the systems can work together, but their interfaces, controls, protection and operating responsibilities must be engineered as one architecture.

Procurement checklist

Use this checklist in the request for proposal and design review:

  • Critical kW and kVA load, growth allowance and load-shedding sequence.
  • Required ride-through, end action and reserve assumptions.
  • UPS model, DC window, charger rating, redundancy and approved battery configurations.
  • Runtime curves or manufacturer configuration data for the exact load and temperature.
  • Battery chemistry, cabinet arrangement, footprint, weight and floor-loading data.
  • Monitoring points, communications protocol, alarm ownership and remote-service boundaries.
  • Inspection, testing, preventive maintenance, acceptance testing and service response.
  • Warranty capacity, calendar-life assumptions, replacement strategy and spare-parts availability.
  • Current safety listings, fire and electrical requirements, AHJ approvals and emergency procedures.
  • Transport, installation, access, lifting, structural, ventilation and environmental requirements.
  • Recycling or disposal arrangements and end-of-life documentation.

Common selection mistakes and corrections

Choosing by chemistry reputation

Problem: Selecting lithium-ion or VRLA because it is widely promoted as superior. Correction: Compare approved systems against the same load, runtime, temperature, redundancy and lifecycle assumptions.

Ignoring room and structural constraints

Problem: Treating footprint and weight as procurement details. Correction: Verify floor loading, delivery path, clearances, fire separation, ventilation, cooling and maintenance access during design.

Assuming monitoring eliminates maintenance

Problem: Installing telemetry without alarm ownership or inspection procedures. Correction: Assign response, testing, escalation and replacement responsibilities in the operating plan.

Relying on an old code summary

Problem: Treating a 2016 or 2017 technical paper as current approval. Correction: Obtain current listing documents and confirm requirements with the AHJ for the exact site and assembly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing UPS batteries with BESS on the wrong objective

Problem: Expecting a site BESS to perform the UPS’s no-break conditioning, or expecting a UPS battery to provide all site-energy services. Correction: Define each system’s role and engineer their controls and protection together where both are installed.

Bottom line

The right data-center UPS battery is the approved system that meets the measured critical load and required ride-through under realistic temperature, aging and redundancy assumptions, while fitting the room, safety rules, maintenance capability and lifecycle budget. Use manufacturer-specific runtime data, compare complete VRLA and lithium-ion systems rather than generic chemistry claims, and verify current compliance with the manufacturer and local AHJ before committing to the installation.
