Base UI provides unstyled React components and interaction behavior; your application’s component layer supplies the visual design, tokens and reusable APIs. You can use shadcn/ui’s Base UI setup, or build a locally owned layer with a similar approach. The choice affects how much component code and abstraction your team owns—not whether Base UI itself dictates a visual system.
What each layer is responsible for
Base UI is the foundation: it provides unstyled React components, their interaction behavior and component parts. A shadcn/ui-style layer sits above it to apply design tokens and styling, expose reusable wrappers, and shape APIs around the needs of your application. Base UI’s quick start presents shadcn/ui as a pre-styled option built on Base UI; shadcn/ui also documents customization of component code. A locally built layer can follow a similar model, but that does not make it identical to shadcn/ui.
Decide explicitly where the boundary falls. For example, a wrapper might set the application’s standard spacing, colors and focus treatment while still exposing the Base UI props and parts needed for a particular screen. The exact component names, visual conventions, abstraction level and ownership boundaries are design-system decisions for your team.

For a direct Base UI setup, its quick start installs @base-ui/react using a package manager. If you want shadcn/ui’s tooling and component workflow, follow its current installation guide for your framework and whether you are creating a project or adding it to an existing one. The Next.js guide documents a Base selection in configuration and a generated command may include --base; do not assume that command applies to another framework.

These setup paths answer different questions: the package quick start gets Base UI into a React project, while shadcn/ui’s framework-specific workflow helps configure its component layer. Standardize styling without losing component control
Base UI does not require a particular styling system. Its components expose className, state-based data attributes, CSS variables and style props, and the styling handbook demonstrates Tailwind, CSS Modules and CSS-in-JS. The documentation puts it plainly: “Base UI components are unstyled, don’t bundle CSS, and are compatible with Tailwind, CSS Modules, CSS-in-JS, or any other styling solution you prefer.”

Use wrapper components to make the project’s conventions easy to follow: define how tokens map to component states, how class names are composed, which props remain customizable, and when consumers can access lower-level parts. Avoid hiding a Base UI capability that product screens genuinely need. Conversely, if every screen independently decides basic colors and focus styles, the layer is not doing its job as a consistent design system. Base UI styling handbook.

Base UI documents ARIA support, keyboard navigation and focus management. Those behaviors are a useful foundation, not a certification of the finished interface. The application still needs to give controls appropriate accessible names, keep focus indicators visible, and maintain sufficient foreground/background contrast. Review the composed component and its real content, not only the primitive in isolation. Base UI accessibility overview.
Check portals and mobile Safari layering
Portaled menus, dialogs and other overlays can interact unexpectedly with page stacking contexts. Base UI recommends creating an isolation stacking context for the app root so portaled UI appears above page content without relying on conflicting page-level z-index values. Test overlays in the actual application layout, including nested stacking contexts.
Base UI’s quick start also documents an iOS 26+ Safari backdrop adjustment: position backdrops absolutely and set body { position: relative; } so a backdrop can cover the visual viewport after scrolling. Treat this as a browser-specific consideration, then verify it against the app’s layout and supported browser versions. Base UI quick start.

Account for strict content security policies
Some components may render inline style or script elements. Base UI documents passing a request-specific nonce through CSPProvider and also describes disabling certain inline style elements. However, the provider does not cover style attributes. If your policy restricts style-src-attr, review server-rendered markup and the affected components separately; adding the provider alone does not settle that question. Base UI CSP Provider guide.

Choose the ownership model that fits the team
There is no documentation-backed benchmark showing that a hand-built layer is faster or cheaper than shadcn/ui’s workflow. Compare the approaches against your project’s responsibilities and preferences:
Best Value
| Decision | Question to settle |
|---|---|
| Visual-system ownership | Do you want to own the tokens and component styling directly, or start from shadcn/ui’s setup and component workflow? |
| Abstraction | Should most product code use a small, opinionated wrapper API, or should screens retain direct access to more Base UI parts? |
| Project setup | Does the framework and repository fit the current shadcn/ui installation path, or is a direct Base UI integration more appropriate? |
| Styling conventions | How will classes, state data attributes, CSS variables and style props fit the team’s tokens and chosen styling approach? |
| Ongoing maintenance | Who will review accessibility, CSP, portal and browser behavior, and adapt wrappers when Base UI changes? |
A locally owned layer offers control over its API and presentation, along with responsibility for maintaining both. Using shadcn/ui’s workflow provides a documented route to a Base-based component setup and customizable code, but teams still need to own how those components fit their application. Pin stable versions and review changes
Pin the Base UI version used in production and review release notes before upgrading. The official release page listed v1.8.0 as the latest release on September 4, 2026, when checked on October 7, 2026; its notes included accessibility, focus and interaction fixes. That is a dated snapshot, not a claim about the latest version today. The release page warns that canary releases may contain breaking changes, so distinguish them from stable releases in production dependency policy. Base UI releases.
