Choose backup power as a complete facility architecture, not as a UPS purchase. Start with the AI cluster’s critical electrical load and growth plan, decide which loads require conditioned continuity, then design the UPS, energy storage, alternate generation, distribution, protection, controls and maintenance strategy as one power path. A suitable design keeps servers within their ride-through limits, starts alternate sources safely, survives a defined failure without a single point of failure, and can be serviced while the data center remains available.

There is no universally correct battery runtime, chemistry, generator type or redundancy level. Utility behavior, site conditions, AI hardware, local codes, fuel logistics and the required availability target determine those choices. The method below shows how to turn those inputs into an engineered specification.

What a backup power system must do in an AI data center

A data center power system has several layers. The utility service feeds service equipment and switchgear; distribution equipment routes power to the information-technology (IT) and supporting loads; an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) conditions power and bridges an interruption; and an alternate source such as a generator or other energy system can sustain the facility when the utility is unavailable. Power distribution units (PDUs), transfer equipment, protection and monitoring complete the path.

The U.S. Department of Energy describes UPS systems as backup power for sensitive IT and supporting equipment, with implementations based on battery banks, rotary machines, fuel cells or other technologies. A UPS is therefore one component of a larger system. Buying a high-capacity UPS without checking switchgear, feeder capacity, transfer behavior, generators, cooling and maintenance bypasses can leave the AI load exposed even when the UPS itself is online.

AI servers add planning pressure because accelerators, networking and cooling infrastructure can create a large, rapidly growing and less predictable load. Obtain the exact platform requirements from the server manufacturer or integrator: input voltage and frequency, allowable transfer disturbance, power-factor behavior, inrush or restart characteristics, rack power limits, and any required number of independent power feeds. A facility design must satisfy those requirements rather than assume that a conventional enterprise load behaves the same way.

Step 1: Establish the design basis before selecting equipment

Build a critical-load inventory

List every electrical load and classify it by the consequence of an interruption. Typical categories include:

  • Compute and storage: AI servers, storage arrays and management nodes that must remain powered or shut down in a controlled sequence.
  • Network and control: fabric switches, out-of-band management, security appliances and orchestration systems needed to keep the cluster coherent.
  • Cooling and environmental control: pumps, fans, chillers, cooling-tower auxiliaries and controls whose loss could force an immediate compute shutdown.
  • Safety and facility systems: fire detection and suppression controls, emergency lighting, access control, monitoring and communications.
  • Noncritical support loads: office areas, convenience receptacles or other loads that can be shed during an outage.

Record real and apparent power (kW and kVA), voltage, phase, power factor, harmonic current, startup current, duty cycle and allowable interruption for each item. The DOE advises basing UPS design on accurate critical-load and power-demand projections and considering both initial and future loads, including part-load operation. Do not place every facility load behind the UPS by default; unnecessary coverage increases capital cost, losses and stored-energy requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Model growth and operating states

Prepare at least three operating cases: the initial deployment, the planned end-state and a credible degraded state such as one cooling unit or one power module unavailable. Include the effect of accelerator expansion, higher rack density, storage growth, network upgrades and seasonal cooling demand. Show the minimum, normal and peak load for each case. A UPS that is efficient at one operating point may be inefficient or overloaded at another.

Document site and utility conditions

Capture service voltage, short-circuit level, available capacity, expected outage behavior, transfer limitations, interconnection rules, fuel access, ambient temperature, altitude, flood or seismic exposure and the physical route for feeders and exhaust. Identify whether the utility requires generation protection, export controls, synchronization or power-quality limits. These conditions determine which technologies can be permitted and operated safely.

Step 2: Size the UPS for the critical load

Size from the measured or engineered critical load, not from the building’s total connected load. Convert the expected real power to apparent power using the equipment’s power factor:

Required apparent power (kVA) = critical real power (kW) ÷ operating power factor.

Then apply the manufacturer’s limits for continuous loading, overload duration, ambient derating, altitude, battery temperature and future expansion. Keep separate calculations for each independent power path. A single aggregate number can hide an overloaded feeder or an undersized rack path.

Use a transparent sizing worksheet

Input What to record Why it affects selection
Initial critical load Measured or modeled kW and kVA by bus, rack and phase Sets the starting UPS and distribution capacity
Future load Expansion schedule, additional racks and cooling demand Determines installed headroom or a modular expansion plan
Power factor and harmonics At normal and peak operating points Determines kVA, input filtering and generator compatibility
Inrush and step load Largest motor, pump or IT load step Tests inverter, battery and generator transient response
Autonomy target Required bridge time until alternate power or controlled shutdown Sets stored-energy capacity and recharge requirements
Redundancy case Load with one module, UPS, feeder or generator unavailable Prevents a maintenance or fault event from exceeding capacity
Environmental derating Temperature, altitude, ventilation and battery-room conditions Reduces nameplate capacity where conditions require it

Use the worst credible combination, not simply the highest individual reading. For example, a design may need to carry the end-state compute load while one UPS module is out for service and cooling auxiliaries are starting. Have the electrical engineer reconcile the UPS rating with switchgear, transformers, PDUs, busways, protective devices and generator output.

Decide which equipment is actually on UPS power

Some cooling equipment may require continuous conditioned power; other equipment can be connected to the generator-backed but non-UPS bus if its controls tolerate the transfer. A load-shed sequence can preserve the compute bus by dropping noncritical cooling or building loads in a defined order, but only after thermal and safety analysis. Document every load’s source, transfer time and restart behavior so operators know what remains energized during each failure mode.

Step 3: Choose a UPS topology and technology

Double-conversion UPS

Online double-conversion systems rectify incoming AC to DC and invert it back to controlled AC. The inverter normally supplies the load, so voltage and frequency disturbances are isolated from the IT bus and a utility failure can transfer to stored energy without a mechanical transfer event. The DOE identifies double-conversion as the most common data-center UPS type. Its efficiency, bypass behavior, overload capability and response at the expected load still must be verified for the chosen model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Line-interactive or standby arrangements

These can be suitable for less sensitive support loads, but their transfer characteristics and conditioning are not automatically appropriate for high-density AI equipment. Use them only when the server platform’s allowable interruption and power-quality limits have been demonstrated to match the topology.

Modular, centralized and distributed arrangements

  • Centralized UPS: concentrates conversion and batteries in a plant room. It can simplify service and monitoring but creates larger common equipment and feeder failure domains.
  • Modular UPS: adds power modules as load grows and can support capacity or maintenance redundancy. Confirm module sharing, bypass operation, short-circuit performance and whether a failed control component can affect all modules.
  • Distributed or row-level UPS: places smaller units near loads and can limit fault propagation, but increases the number of batteries, controls, service points and coordination studies.

Compare these arrangements on the full power path, not UPS efficiency alone. The preferred topology is the one that provides the required failure tolerance and maintainability with manageable operational complexity.

Consider non-battery UPS technologies where the site supports them

DOE lists battery banks, rotary machines, fuel cells and other UPS bases. Rotary systems may provide high short-circuit strength or ride-through characteristics; fuel-cell and other architectures may fit a site with an appropriate fuel and emissions strategy. Their feasibility depends on maintenance capability, fuel supply, permitting, noise, emissions, footprint, black-start behavior and integration with the distribution system. The available evidence does not establish one technology as universally superior.

How much UPS runtime does an AI data center need?

Runtime is the time the UPS can support the defined critical load from stored energy under the specified temperature, aging and load conditions. It should be set by the site’s recovery sequence, not by a generic minute value. The International Energy Agency describes UPS batteries as providing instantaneous power and commonly bridging the startup of alternate sources; the system is usually designed to cover the time needed for those sources to start.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Define the sequence explicitly:

  1. Utility disturbance: the UPS detects an out-of-tolerance voltage or frequency condition and maintains the IT bus.
  2. Source-start decision: controls issue a generator or alternate-source start command when the outage qualifies under the operating logic.
  3. Start and stabilization: the source reaches voltage, frequency, protection and minimum loading conditions.
  4. Transfer: switchgear or static transfer equipment connects the alternate source without exceeding the IT platform’s limits.
  5. Recharge and recovery: the UPS returns to normal mode and replenishes stored energy while the alternate source carries the load.
  6. Extended-outage or failed-start branch: the system sheds noncritical loads, extends fuel operation or performs an orderly IT shutdown before stored energy is exhausted.

Measure the actual start-and-transfer time during commissioning, then add engineering margin for cold starts, repeated attempts, control delays, battery aging and the possibility that the first generator fails. If the facility intentionally operates on UPS energy without a generator, size for the documented outage-duration distribution, operating policy and safe shutdown time; no cited source supplies a universal autonomy target.

Do data centers need batteries and generators?

They often use both because the technologies perform different jobs, but neither is mandatory in every architecture. Batteries or another fast energy store provide immediate ride-through and power conditioning. A generator, fuel cell or other alternate source can sustain the load for a longer outage after it starts. A facility may instead use a different combination of storage, grid services and generation if its reliability, runtime and regulatory requirements are met.

Energy-storage choices

Specify usable energy at the end of life, not only the initial nameplate rating. Evaluate:

  • maximum and continuous discharge power;
  • temperature range, ventilation and fire detection or suppression requirements;
  • cell or module monitoring, state-of-charge and state-of-health accuracy;
  • replacement intervals, recycling and hazardous-material handling;
  • recharge time after an outage and the ability to support repeated events;
  • communications protocols, alarms, firmware management and cybersecurity boundaries;
  • fault containment and isolation so one failed module does not disable the protected bus.

The Open Compute Project’s facility-energy work addresses energy-storage-system architecture, integration with UPS, generation and renewables, safety, interoperability, telemetry and lifecycle management. Those are useful specification categories; they do not prescribe one battery chemistry for every data center.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Standby generation

Compare generators or other alternate sources by continuous and transient capacity, step-load response, ramp rate, black-start sequence, fuel storage and replenishment, emissions, noise, exhaust routing, maintenance intervals and operation at the site’s altitude and temperature. Confirm that the source can support the UPS input rectifiers and cooling loads simultaneously. A generator that meets steady-state kW but cannot tolerate the UPS’s harmonic or step-load behavior may trip during transfer.

Plan fuel quality, testing under load, access during regional emergencies and the number of independent fuel systems. If a source is shared by multiple electrical paths, analyze whether a common fuel pump, control panel or switchboard defeats the intended redundancy.

Design redundancy across the entire power path

Redundancy is meaningful only when independent failure domains remain independent. Review utility entrances, service transformers, switchgear, UPS modules, batteries, bypasses, feeders, PDUs, rack power supplies, generators, fuel systems, controls and cooling auxiliaries. A duplicated UPS fed from one switchboard or one maintenance bypass is not two independent paths.

Capacity and path models

  • N: installed capacity exactly meets the design load; any major component outage reduces available capacity.
  • N+1: one additional module or source can be unavailable while the design load remains supported, provided the distribution path is also capable.
  • 2N or dual-path: two separately capable systems can each carry the protected load, normally with dual-corded IT equipment and separated upstream equipment.

These labels describe capacity intent, not a certification. Validate them with a single-line diagram, fault study, failure-mode analysis and a maintenance procedure. Include common controls, shared cooling, fuel, grounding and physical routes in the analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use platform-specific guidance carefully

NVIDIA’s DGX H100 SuperPOD electrical design example describes two UPSs supplying three rack power paths and uses concurrent maintainability and no single point of failure as design benchmarks. That is guidance for that platform configuration, not a blanket requirement for every AI data center. Obtain the requirements for the actual server generation, rack design and cluster topology.

Make maintenance possible without an outage

Provide a tested maintenance bypass, isolation points, spare-module strategy, clearances for battery and power equipment, and procedures that prevent an operator from paralleling incompatible sources. Demonstrate that a technician can remove the planned component while the remaining path carries the load within its thermal and electrical limits.

Evaluate efficiency at the load you will actually run

UPS losses become heat that the cooling system must remove and electricity that the facility must purchase. The DOE’s 2024 guide reports that double-conversion UPS efficiency improved from about 85% to 90% in the 1990s to 95% or higher in 2023. Those are general guide figures, not a guarantee for a particular model, operating point or installation.

Request efficiency curves rather than one peak value. Compare normal, minimum, future and degraded-load conditions, including operation on bypass and during battery charging. Check input power factor, harmonic distortion, eco or economy modes, transfer limits and the effect of redundant modules operating at low load. An efficiency mode that introduces a disturbance unacceptable to the AI platform is not an appropriate saving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The DOE illustrates the scale of the issue with a 15,000-square-foot data center modeled at 100 W per square foot: increasing UPS efficiency from 90% to 95% was estimated to save 768,421 kWh per year at the example electricity price of $0.12 per kWh. Those are the guide’s assumptions and result, not a forecast for a current facility. Recalculate with your measured load, tariff, cooling penalty and operating hours.

Account for ride-through, protection and power quality

Specify acceptable voltage sag, swell, frequency variation, phase imbalance, harmonic distortion, transfer interruption and recovery time at the server input. Coordinate UPS overload curves, bypass breakers, generator protection, transformer inrush and selective tripping so a downstream fault clears without dropping an entire bus.

Ride-through must cover more than the initial utility failure. Analyze repeated disturbances, failed starts, retransfer to utility, generator trips, battery depletion, control-network loss and a fault on one distribution path. The IEEE P4200 project discusses interconnection, ride-through, protection, recovery and ramp-rate topics, but it is an active project rather than a published final standard. Treat it as an indication of issues to address, not as a completed compliance document.

Safety, compliance and grid interconnection

Engage the authority having jurisdiction and a qualified electrical engineer early. Requirements can cover electrical clearances, arc-flash labeling, grounding, battery rooms or enclosures, fire detection and suppression, ventilation, fuel storage, emissions, noise, seismic anchorage, emergency shutdown, worker access and commissioning tests.

Grid-connected storage or generation may require an interconnection study, anti-islanding protection, export limits, synchronization controls and utility witness testing. The European Union’s Delegated Regulation 2024/1364 establishes energy-measurement requirements within its scope; it is jurisdiction-specific and should not be treated as a global data-center rule. Confirm which national, regional and utility requirements apply to the site.

A practical comparison framework

Score each candidate architecture using the same documented assumptions. A qualitative matrix prevents a low purchase price or an impressive nameplate efficiency from hiding a weak failure mode.

Decision area Questions to answer Evidence to request
Capacity and growth Can each path carry the end-state critical load with the planned component unavailable? Load model, derating calculations and single-line diagram
UPS coverage Which loads require conditioned continuity and which can transfer or shed? Critical-load schedule and sequence of operations
Ride-through Can the system bridge source startup and failed-start branches without violating IT limits? Timing study, transient simulations and witnessed tests
Redundancy Are sources, paths, controls, fuel and cooling independent enough for the target? Failure-mode analysis and concurrent-maintenance procedures
Efficiency and heat What are losses at initial, normal, future and degraded loads? Certified efficiency curves and cooling-load calculation
Storage lifecycle How do safety, usable end-of-life energy, recharge and replacement affect operations? Battery warranty, aging model, monitoring points and service plan
Generation and fuel Can alternate sources start, accept step loads and run for the required outage? Transient test data, fuel plan, emissions and maintenance documentation
Interconnection and compliance Can the design be permitted and connected without unplanned export or protection trips? Utility requirements, protection study and permit matrix
Operations Can staff detect, isolate, maintain and restore every component safely? Alarm list, training plan, spares and recovery runbooks

The cited guidance supports these comparison axes but does not provide a project-independent numerical scoring formula. Weight them according to the consequences of downtime, local constraints and the organization’s ability to operate the system.

Commissioning and acceptance tests

Do not accept the system on factory nameplate data alone. A staged commissioning plan should include:

  1. Verify installation, labeling, torque, grounding, clearances, ventilation, fire protection and control wiring.
  2. Test UPS regulation, bypass, overload, battery discharge, recharge and alarm reporting at representative loads.
  3. Start and synchronize each alternate source; measure voltage, frequency, ramp rate, transfer time and step-load response.
  4. Open each utility, feeder, UPS module, bypass, generator and communications failure in a controlled sequence.
  5. Demonstrate load shedding, controlled IT shutdown, retransfer and recovery after a failed-start or depleted-energy scenario.
  6. Run the intended maintenance procedure with the protected load online where the design claims concurrent maintainability.
  7. Record actual waveforms, temperatures, battery measurements, fuel consumption, alarm timestamps and operator actions in the as-built documentation.

Repeat critical tests after major firmware, battery, generator or distribution changes. Store the results with the single-line diagram and operating procedures so future expansions are checked against the original design basis.

Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Buying by kVA alone: correct the rating for power factor, harmonics, temperature, altitude, aging and the required redundancy case.
  • Putting every load on the UPS: classify loads first; unnecessary coverage increases losses and stored-energy demand.
  • Choosing runtime by habit: calculate the measured source-start sequence, failed-start branch and safe shutdown time.
  • Assuming one generator solves redundancy: check shared switchgear, fuel, controls, cooling and physical routes.
  • Using peak efficiency as the business case: compare efficiency and heat at actual initial, normal and future loading.
  • Ignoring the AI platform’s power path: verify rack feed count, transfer tolerance, input characteristics and restart behavior with the hardware supplier.
  • Leaving monitoring until the end: specify telemetry, alarm ownership, time synchronization and cybersecurity boundaries with the electrical design.
  • Treating an active standards project as a final rule: distinguish guidance such as IEEE P4200’s project scope from adopted requirements in the site’s jurisdiction.
  • Substituting consumer equipment: facility-scale UPS, storage, generation, protection and commissioning require engineered systems; a household UPS, portable power station or consumer generator is not a data-center design.

The final decision

Select the architecture that keeps the defined critical AI load within its electrical limits through the complete failure sequence, while allowing planned maintenance and future growth. The recommendation should be traceable to a load model, source-start timing, redundancy analysis, efficiency-at-load calculation, storage and fuel plan, protection study, interconnection requirements and witnessed commissioning results. Until those inputs exist, naming a specific UPS runtime, battery chemistry, generator or topology would be false precision.
